I've walked by this little store many times in the the past six months. I went in there for lunch during my weekend course at school, this past weekend and I can't stop going in there--3 out of the last 4 days I had class. I don't understand the negative reviews of this place. I've been buying lunch here pretty routinely for the last few months, and have never had anything but a 100% positive experience. Alan's sells the cheapest create-your-own salad in Midtown West. You can buy a large salad with 5 toppings for under $8. The same salad would run you upwards of $10 at any of the chain salad places in the neighborhood. The sandwiches are great also. A super basic sandwich ("meat and bread") costs under $5, whereas a special sandwich runs $7 or $8. A lot of reviews mention rude or unfriendly staff. I've never had anything but friendly interactions with the staff behind the counter. And as other reviewers have mentioned: Alan's has a discount for Fordham students, which is much appreciated. Pro tip: it gets really crowded from 12-2 for lunch. Although even when it's most crowded, I'm still always able to get in and out in 10-15 minutes. Alan's is a local gem. read more

And in my situation where things were non-stop during Fashion week--we are talking 30 minutes for lunch tops.So that is why I love this deli so! Right across the street practically from the venue there is this place that has every juice, NON DIET soda, chips, sandwiches, salads, hot breakfast; you can name. And it wasn't crowded. Since I happened to like these girls I was working with, I revealed my hidden treasure, and the 4 of us went here for lunch and took it back to the trailer. There are no seats in this place, but they have veggie burgers, turkey burgers, and all deli classic sandwiches . I did a turkey club and it was very good. Co-workers brought me here today, raving about the salads. And about an hour after finishing my salad, I am now on Yelp, raving about the salads. Great place - nice salad options - great prices. The only thing I would say is that it can be a bit confusing to figure out how the lines work (I guess one line is for hot foods, and another line is for salads), and, the menu board is a bit tricky to read. This place is one of the reasons why Fordham LC students don't starve to death because our own cafeteria sucks so bad. Their salads - you get 5 toppings on your salad and your choice of dressing. You're usually in and out within 15 minutes - unless you go during prime lunch hours, then the line is a bit longer. Flash them your Fordham ID and you get a student discount. Can't beat that. I got a bacon egg and cheese sandwich on a roll which was about $3.50 and I thought okay that's a decent price for a sandwich. I bring it to the office to eat it and my sandwich has literally one piece of bacon and one small egg in it. It barely even took up half the sandwich. It was basically mostly just bread. This place is pretty good if you want a salad on the go. All the the vegetables are fresh. The line moves quick, and it's not terribly overpriced. A salad with 5 mix-ins will set you back $5.95. They used to be $4.95, but damn this recession. The service is cold and unfriendly, but you're in and out in about 5 minutes. After three months of school, I finally decided to visit Alan's after a classmate came to class with a delicious looking lox and cream cheese bagel (even though I don't eat meat!) It is set up in a traditional bodega style where one half of the store consists of grocery-store items, and the other half is a deli station where they make bagels, sandwiches, and prepared salads Vegetarian/Vegan Friendly: I went early in the morning, and have to visit and update again after a lunch trip. As far as breakfast goes, it is entirely vegetarian friendly. For my vegan siblings, this would be more of a challenge. The bagels themselves seemed to be okay for the consumer (there were no egg or milk allergens listed), but choosing a spread would be tough Service: They were extremely welcoming to me, especially after I said it was my first time Food: I ordered an everything bagel with vegetable cream cheese. First things first: my poor rating is not based on their food. There is a specific salad and sandwich I get all the time (I work a block away so it's really convenient) and am usually satisfied. One of the main reasons I would go is that they have a frequent buyer punch-card system that is a nice motivation when you're on a budget to be rewarded for your deli loyalty. My coworkers have always complained about how they boycott Alan's because the staff is so tirelessly rude, they've found hairs in their food, etc. I had yet to have that problem...until today. I was cashing out when I asked for a new punch card after redeeming my free salad last week. The cashier replied that they didn't have them. I asked if I could have her sign my receipt so I could get a punch next time if the cards were back in stock (Whichcraft normally offers to do this when they are out of punch cards) and she very nastily responded "IT DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY!" She starts loudly grunting and complaining "DO YOU HEAR THIS GIRL? SHES DRIVING ME CRAZY WHAT IS HER PROBLEM?!?!?" and ranting and raving about me to another customer RIGHT NEXT TO ME AT THE REGISTER. I'm a VERY loyal and polite customer who gives this business my money at least once a week, sometimes 2-3 times on a week I was too busy to go grocery shopping for the last 3 years. I've worked in the service industry for many years so I totally understand how small things can be frustrating on a day that you're busy or just tired but customer service is essentially the #1 part of your job. At least wait until I leave the store to start complaining about how "annoying" it was that I asked for a frequent-buyer card. It's going to be really hard to go in there again and face the cashier again after how nasty she was so I will probably have to find a new lunch spot in the area. Huge bummer. read more

Yes, there's also a fully-stocked Boar's Head counter, and fresh looking stuff for sandwiches, but I come here primarily, and solely, for the $5 for 5 toppings salad. Whether you want a massive, delicious sandwich dripping with juicy meat and melted cheese or a healthy salad with all sorts of sprouts and beans (or whatever people like to put in salads), Alan's is the place to go. The deli counter has an encyclopedic selection of meats, cheeses, and other things that would taste good between pieces of bread. Though I've never tried it, the salad counter looks good too. The prices absolutely can't be beat in the neighborhood - the sandwiches are huge and cost about seven bucks. Don't despair if the line looks really long. The guys behind the counter are speedy yet accurate, and the cashiers are efficient. I recommend ordering your salad or sandwich and then getting in the line to pay - you can just tell them what you got and pay them. They'll give you a bag with some napkins, and sometimes even an awesome half-sour pickle. There is also a good selection of drinks, ice cream, snacks, canned goods, and so on. They used to stock San Pellegrino sodas, my personal favorite, but unfortunately they stopped doing that a while ago. I'm not sure why you'd want to since Whole Foods is a block away, but you could make a minor grocery stop here and do alright for yourself. The #7 Sandwich is awesome: smoked turkey, cheddar, bacon, tomato and mayo on a hero. You WILL get "The Itis" but you'll love it. There is also another great sandwich that I forget the number of that has roast beef, pastrami, russian dressing, and cole slaw - sort of like a reuben. This little deli is pretty nondescript and easy to walk past without giving a second thought (I go to school across the street and it took me five months to check it out) but it has become one of my favorite places in the area. I probably get lunch there at least once a week. They serve great sandwiches and salads but also carry the kinds of things a convenience store would- drinks, snacks, band aids, candy, etc. The staff is SUPER friendly and fast. The sandwiches are my go to, they're not too pricey (about 7 dollars) and are big enough to feed two people. And they taste amazing. The ingredients here are much fresher than what I can get from my work cafeteria, so it is worth the short walk. Right across from campus, so I've eaten here a bunch of times, and bottom line is that it's perfectly mediocre. First, the good: -They give me a nice 10% discount as a Fordham student. -They use Boarshead meats. -Their generally pretty fast. -Breakfast sandwiches are a good price. And now the bad: -They're not too friendly. -They don't know what pork roll is (I asked if they had it, the guy said no, then I saw it two inches in front of his hands) -Even on weekends, they don't do breakfast at noon - I've worked in a deli, breakfast is easy, plus if you're next to a campus, shouldn't you expect students to want breakfast a little later on weekends?? -They don't have horseradish (I know this is kinda picky, but I worked in a deli in rural PA and this is in the heart of Manhattan, self-proclaimed pizza and deli capital of the world, and I pay more for it, so at least compete with Wawa for god's sakes. I love Alan's! I stop in for lunch and breakfast. They have a deli counter to make custom sandwiches (turkey, bologna, ham, chicken parm) as well as a salad counter and hot foods. Everything is reasonably priced for the area which is super expensive considering all the schools, Lincoln center, etc. Try the BLT it is amazing. They do get super busy at lunch time so the sandwich makers can get a bit testy if you are being difficult, but it's because it's a small deli and have a lot of patrons. I have never had a problem with the staff - in fact, they have always been very courteous to me. Cheap coffee ($1.75 for a large) and convenient location made this place a favorite when I lived in New York. But I still go back because, though a bit pricey, their sandwiches are huge, delicious and made with fresh ingredients. The salad is also great - five toppings of your choosing and a choice of greens, but watch them with the dressing (or you will have a soggy salad). There is a "discount" for Fordham students - tax-free if you show your student ID before they ring you up. A bit of a rip-off, considering how much of their business is Fordham-based. read more
