My friend and I had just left the Southwick zoo and wanted a sweet treat to cool off. West End Creamery was about a 20 minute drive away. When we arrived, we pulled into their large parking lot off to the side. There is a sign that has all the things they offer including ice cream, mini golf, adventure farm, and venue(s) for birthday parties. We wanted ice cream so we went straight to the wooden cabin looking building and joined the line. Despite there being a line, it moved quick. I appreciated that they have their menu posted in about 4-5 places along the building so you can easily see their options from every spot. I asked to try about three flavors and finally settled on blueberry pie and peanut butter truffle in a sugar cone. My friend ordered two scoops of black raspberry. The total came out to $13 which is average for ice cream and the scoops they give are pretty big which makes it worth it. They have a lot of picnic tables on their patio, with some in the shade and others in the sun. As I ate my ice cream, l admired the lake and big trees in the distance; it truly is a beautiful space. The blueberry pie was not overly sweet, but it did have little pieces of blueberry and soft pie crust. The peanut butter truffle was a peanut butter base with chocolate chips and peanut butter cups. It was a perfect balance of peanut butter and chocolate and not overwhelmingly sweet. I would absolutely come back to try other flavors. read more

The best ice cream you will find in central Massachusetts. I've been coming here for years when I visit the area and it is never a disappointment. They have signature flavors and they also have seasonal flavors, like pumpkin Oreo, and coffee Oreo. Choosing a favorite is quite difficult but cherry moose tracks, pineapple dole whip, campfire s'mores, kahlua coffee brownie, and turtle are some CLASSICS and you cannot go wrong with them. A little pricey but worth it for quality ice cream. They also have 6 flavors flights for about $15 (or $10 I can't remember now). They also have fun activities for kids (and adults...) like an adventure farm with various things to do, mini golf, and so much scenery, and it's a great picnic spot. Coming here is always a highlight after visiting Purgatory, except for this visit on Sat June 21st. We ordered six ice creams, but my son immediately ran back to me at the window while I was still waiting to complete our order saying his salted caramel chocolate pretzel tasted like banana. I tried it myself to double-check, and it absolutely tasted like banana. When I let the server know, she scowled, shook her head, and defensively told me, 'It wouldn't taste like banana.' I told her I tried it twice, but she clearly didn't believe us. I just asked where the garbage was and requested a replacement flavor. She charged me for the new one, but I'm not worried about the $7. Been to west end about 7-8 times now and every time it has been a decent experience. I've had a few long lines that moved slowly and a few long lines that moved quickly. Every time the ice cream has been pretty good considering it's not made in house but I also don't get too wild with my flavors (coffee Oreo, black raspberry, cookie dough etc.). It's a great place for young families since there's a bunch of farm themed activities for the kids as well as mini golf, although the course is awkward and not well maintained IMHO. In the fall they also build a corn maze with a nifty theme. Overall, it's a fun place for a quick treat or even a few hours with the kids but not really a place to pilgrimage for the world's best ice cream. After visiting Purgatory Chasm, this is a great place to stop by for a sweet treat on a hot summer day. All the ice creams here are huge and the prices are fairly reasonable. I got a medium strawberry and cotton candy and a small pineapple Dole whip. The cotton candy doesn't taste artificial, but still sweet with the candy pieces in it, while the strawberry has more a mild flavor in comparison. The Dole whip is very refreshing and I would definitely get it again. We came a few minutes after opening and there was already people ordering and eating ice cream for lunch. This is a hidden gem! Their ice cream flavors are pretty much the same as every other little stand but their scoops are large. They offer ice cream flights! These flights are perfect for those days that you just cannot decide which flavor you want. They also had an apple cider ice cream donut float - wow that is a mouth full to say and eat! They have the farm area for families which is a lot of fun and they keep it very clean. There are so many fun things to do all summer and fall long. We came twice, once in the early summer and then in the fall and the kids loved it both times. It's located on Purgatory Road, just down the street from the well known Purgatory Chasm, a destination for hikers of all ages. I rate this a 4.2. Lots of activities here. I went mini golfing at a pretty late time 8:45pm. They were still open and the course is pretty good. No cool attractions on the holes, but they are pretty challenging. Ice cream after was also very good and stays open pretty late. We go about once every few weeks during the summer and are never disappointed. They are always busy and always shorten up the wait lines super quick because their employees are quick, efficient and friendly! My go to is the grapenut custard ice cream (like a sweet vanilla with grape nuts in it)... 2 scoops in a waffle cone. I think they make their own waffle cones because they just seem handmade- fresh and crunchy... and big! One of my favorite things is to get to see all of the dogs customers bring with them! We stopped here on the way to Purgatory Chasm, an amazing park to explore with lots of rocks to hop, climb, and scramble upon. This place was ok, but pretty on par with standard ice cream shack fair, a lot of flavors that largely taste like flavored sweet cream without the complexity or the mixture of bitterness and sweetness or sweet and sorrow that make for next level frozen treatery. Also, negative points for only allowing one flavor on a small (which is larger than 2 scoops anyways). I got the Apple Crisp, the base was lightly flavored with yummy chunks of baked apple and crust, I wish there were a lot more chunks. It was good, not great. Emily got the Campfire S'Mores that was probably the best of the bunch we ordered. The base was graham cracker and it had marshmallow swirls in it and very good chocolate chunks and these unexpected clumps of brown sugar and butter (nothing to do with s'mores but quite tasty!). I took more than a few bites of her ice cream since this one was tasty. Noah got the Oreo flavor which was pretty standard cookies 'n' cream, nothing too exciting. All in all, a decent spot for what it is, it certainly had a long line, but not really one I'd go out of my way for. Would have liked to try the German Chocolate Cake or Peanut Butter Truffle though! and a half cones out of five. I mean for the price you pay per portion, I'd expect homemade ice cream. I'm pretty sure this ice cream is made by Richardson's, which many other ice cream joints sell the same flavors. I came this weekend after many years in hopes of them creating some individuality to their ice cream and it's the same old variety. To top it all off, a mini was $3 (please see photo below). It's the size of a Hoodsie Cup (minus the wooden spoon...bummer). The small size my mom got was the perfect amount but almost $5? I can't justify it. I always look forward to coming to West End Creamery! I've been here multiple times now (both pre-COVID and during COVID) and have never been disappointed. People seem to be upset that the ice cream isn't homemade on site, but for me that doesn't take away from the quality of the ice cream. At the start of COVID, they didn't allow you to eat on the premises, but I'm glad to see they've changed that currently. We ate in our car because it was a little chilly but there was an outdoor seating area that families were sitting at. It's a tad pricey but overall well worth the product. Bonus that the creamery is located on a beautiful farm. I've played mini golf here (more than once!) and was impressed by how nice the course was. read more

We keep losing the balls because the bushes are overgrown over the green and holes, the lighting is bad, and in general poorly maintained. Worse they don't say they charge $2 for a lost ball. Came here for ice cream on a hot Saturday afternoon and ended up doing mini golf as well. I was worried about the mini golf being ridiculously crowded- it was indeed crowded but nothing too bad. The course itself is fun, not the #1 mini golf I've done but it was still really great! We got ice cream afterwards and the line was so long but so worth it. The young man helping us was also really nice and made some good recommendations!! I got the coffee kahlua brownie flavor, which they let me try first, and it's just so good.
