I've always liked going to West Marine as I am a Captain and my company buys a whole lot of parts. But this time id hate to leave a bad review and would give a 0 star if I could. Went there this morning to pick up some stuff for my boat, I was then looked at as if I was going to shop lift. It's a big place so of course I'd like to shop and look at all the new stuff. Did take my time doing it, but for some reason, the staff were eyeing my every move as if I was a criminal. Unhappy!! As soon as I was going to check out, an employee approached ( Asian lady, short hair in her 50s, no smile, racist) me and said that I could take those to the front for you Sir, I said I was going to check out soon and she said no I insist. Zero stars but it won't let me. Just had the most disappointing experience at this store and with manager Alejandro regarding an exchange for a telescoping boat hook which we purchased some time ago. We were not aware that it was defective until we needed to use it when our boat stalled in the water and attempted to use it only to realize it was defective. We tried to exchange it but was met with inflexibility and no empathy. As long time customers who have spent a lot of money at this store (as many who patronize of this store) it was a disappointing response, he did not even offer to look up in the system when we bought it. I needed to get a gift certificate for a very nice boat person so my girlfriend recommended West Marine. Very impressive!!! Everything a boat person could need! We re fixing up a boat to cross the Pacific back to the mainland, so going to get things from West Marine was sometimes a daily ritual. Luckily, it was close. We had a time deadline so need to get what we need as fast as possible and, preferably, to be on the shelf where we can take it home that day. West Marine doesn't seem to stock as much as they used to (we had to even order sailing gloves) but we found most things we needed and the Pro Desk was able to order others. Hawaii being an island really hits home when you have to order something-it takes 2 weeks by plane and if it is a hazardous item, such as an EPIRB with a lithium batter, it has to come by boat! Oahu is big on fishing and West Marine has a huge fishing department with tons of equipment and even a special desk for answering questions and they even helped in setting up hand lines for us. They also have a water sports area and carry kayaks and similar items for fun on the water! The Ocean Kayak brand they carry is tough enough to handle ocean kayaking too. I've had two and would get another! And may! The best part of the store are the stellar employees who are boaters-such as [to name a few] Rafe, the manager, who knows electronics extremely well and can answer seemingly all questions about the products; Janice, the Pro Desk Manager was so great to help us get exactly what we needed and in our timeframe. Scott at the fishing supplies knew everything about what you need to catch the big ones and constructs hand lines like a magician! Paul and Tracy really helped so many time with orders and finding items that were hard to find. So many others helped us on day to day finding items or answering questions. We really appreciated their help and super friendly attitudes-even when they were crazy busy. They deserve 10 stars and a raise! My only problem with West Marine (and we've used them for decades!) is that they don't carry enough of and a larger variety of items anymore. We don't order these things online (even when we could get them cheaper) because we want to touch them and talk to the staff who know about them. We had to order so much!We spent tons of money setting up this boat and they made it harder to throw money at them. And in Hawaii, ordering items like the EPIRB we chose had to come by boat because of it's hazardous materials-the lithium battery. Ridiculous! Stock more! Pretty nice store and well stocked. I probably don't know half of the stuff in here. I'm not much on boats, diving etc. but they have an awesome sale going on and I picked up a pretty sweet inflatable paddle board for under $500! It's comes with everything! So I'm pretty happy about that. The staff was very friendly, offered a member program, informed me about the warranty and suggested taking a photo and emailing it to myself. A little bit expensive sometimes but if you need boating equipment since there is no Kilgo's anymore this is where you are going to be. they have a good selection of things you will or going to need for your boat whether it is wiring for your trailer or boat, Depth recorders, or just rigging, etc.. Pretty knowledgeable staff and friendly service is a plus. Parking is sometimes a bit tough if you are coming lunch hour so try to go at times when it is less crowded. read more

Went in to look at fishing supplies. There was one guy behind the counter at the fishing supply area. Doesn't even smile, greet me, and doesn't ask if I need help. I'm looking at reels in the display case, and he's standing right behind the counter, but doesn't say a word. I then browsed the fishing tackle area. I'm looking a poles, taking them off the rack, reading the specs, etc. A different worker walks by, doesn't say a word to me. I went in, specifically to buy a new Penn spinning reel, but, based on my experience I decided to walk out. I will give my business to the smaller, locally owned fishing stores, who actually enjoy seeing, talking with and servicing their customers. read more

I was once a University of Hawaii cheerleader (Go Rainbows!) and one day my student advisor asked: "Hey do you know any small girls like you who are really strong? We need girls for the sailing team and they don't need to know how to sail. We travel all over the country for regattas and UH pays for your trips." My reply: "Uh yeah. Me! Where do I sign up?!" So I joined the UH sailing team not knowing a lick about how to sail and really only because I was desperate to get out of Hawaii! Yes how the grass is greener on the other side! Of the ocean... If you randomly decide that you're going to start sailing, fake it til you make it at West Marine! This is where "real" sailors go and I've bought my boots and trusty sailing gloves here. I've never had a chance to explore the entire store but it's great for the water sport enthusiast. Stock full of equipment and apparel for the days when you want to be part fish. Store is great for kayakers like myself...i spend top dollars on alot of gears...and most associates are very friendly and knowledgeable...BUT one associate kept following me around asking me if i needed help or if i needed anything...thats fine, i get thst your doing your job...but asking me more then 4 times i cant help but feel uneasy... After browsing for a while i needed to take a leak...so i do...while im in there Alex(tall ball dude with glasses wjo keeps following me)...goes and turns of the lights...what kind crap is that...but i kept my cool... While im in the store he keeps following me and even sends another associate this time a short lil girl to keep an eye on me... Absolute worst customer service in the world. The only way it could get more worse is if they hired chimps... actually I'm sure if they hired chimps, their store would be more productive. At least it would be entertaining. I'm writing this after calling West Marine off Nimitz Hwy for the nth-time and either being put on hold for absolutely way too long (eventually leading to me hanging up and calling again) or being told I would get a call back and never receiving one. The best was when they said " we will call you back" but never took my phone number down... I would think you would want to take my call since I've been trying to call for the past week to PAY for almost a grand worth of supplies.... And I can call bullshit that you're employers are too busy to answer a phone call because I've been in the store and watched everyone walk around and stare at walls. Yay for West Marine! Their selection is just what you'd expect at a quality boat supply store. The staff was very helpful and went above and beyond to make sure I had everything I could need. The sweet saleswoman who helped me actually asked me personal questions about my boat and offered great advice that I'm surely going to take. She was a boater herself which raised my trust in her advice. The only downside to West Marine is their prices. I'm a huge value shopper and thought that some of their prices were quite high and could be found other places for cheaper and just as good quality. But that doesn't detract from the fact that I would still recommend this place to any and all boaters! Thanks West Marine! read more

I stand in line outside because of covid-19. Lady opens up the door, ask what I'm looking for, I say, "a boat fender". She then tells me aisle 14 and adds to ,"make it quick". Ok I get it. People wanna shop and you can only let in so many people at a time. I take about 10 minutes, spend 99$, check out with the same lady that greeted me at the door and as I grab my receipt and say thank you for helping me , she proceeds to respond with nothing. My cousins and I walked in looking for a fish finder. Nobody helped us for over 40 minutes. We looked online on our cellphones for fish finders while waiting for someone to help us and bought it from Cabela's instead. Pros: Good selection, clean store, easy to find things you need. My first impression walking in was "wow"....we didn't know where to start. Immediately when we walked in a nice and friendly girl at the register greeted us. Once we started walking around, we could not see any other employees. Then we finally got to the last row in the back of the store and two employees were there talking but none of them asked us if were needed any kind of help. Looking around I immediately notice how much more everything was compared to other fishing stores we go to. It was enjoyable to walking around because the store is spacious and clean. They carry everything from outdoor clothing, kayaks, coolers, some light tackle fishing things but their main speciality and biggest selection is for boaters. Once we were ready to check out the same girl that greeted us was there to ring us up. In fact she was so helpful that she helped us find what we went there looking for. She was friendly l, helpful, and provide great customer service which made up for the other non helpful and friendly employees. If you're a boater or kayaker, this is the place for you. If you are a shoreline fisherman, you're better off visiting somewhere else with a better selection and better prices. read more

Ive had some rough experiences with sunglasses that don't float from other businesses and being an avid paddler, I went to West Marine to see if they had some good choices. The gentleman at the counter helped me and was very knowledgeable about the different lenses, how they affect the color, glare, and hue of the water. Bonus! I would give this place zero stars if i could. Way overpriced....this place is the biggest boating retail supply store on Oahu and i guess they know it so they gouge you in their prices. Electronics, rod holders, fuel filters...yeah they have it all but youll pay a hefty price if you really need it now and dont wanna order it elsewhere online. As an example, i went looking for a 1/2" perko plastic thru hull fitting, which they sell and it was $11+, found the same one online for $3. Attwood Clamp on stainless rod holders sell for $50 each, found better quality ones online for $15 each. There are MANY more examples i could give. Anyway save your money and shop elsewhere....even POP down the road has way better pricing. read more

Kevin was so incredibly helpful. I went in the store a bit intimidated since it seems like a hard core fishing store, and I just wanted to buy a recreational kayak. But Kevin walked me though the options and everything that I needed and even gave me tips since I am a novice ocean kayaker. He even helped me strap everything one my car and explained each step so I could know how to do it by myself next time. I don't think I have ever visited a store that has such outrageous prices as West Marine. They charge in excess of 1,000% above dealer cost on some items. Tip: You can buy anything West Marine has in their store on eBay for a fraction of what they are charging in their store. If you are in a hurry to get it, you can have it sent Next Day Air, and it will still cost far less then what it would have cost from West Marine. read more

West marine is prob 1 of the 3 worst jobs I've ever had in my life hired last month with really no proper interview which was already a red flag to me no drug test or explanation on uniform I had to use my common sense and see what everyone else was wearing. The first day was unorganized they knew nothing of me coming in for my first day so instead of clocking me in at 8am I was out in at 8:30am and had to stay half an hr longer I got a tour of the store which is extremely outdated I was shown a tiny bit on how to cashier all the systems were seized up so it was a mess there is no where to take a break which is only 30 mins and if you work 6hrs you get a 10 min break only! Which is crazy to me! There is literally nothing to do it's all just keep busy work you'll find yourself wondering around growing tired. Might I add the break room is small and very dirty! The Second day was even worse the shipment came and everyone was scheduled to only have a few pallets I still had 4 hrs left and there was nothing to do like absolutely nothing, I was asked to put a shopping cart full of damages and out dated merch back on the shelves and I had to DUST them off with windex and some of the merch was USED! I ended up leaving 2hrs early. All everyone does is constantly talk on the walkies joking around all day instead of keeping the line clear for professionalism. I did not expect it to be like that! It's all kind of one demographic that works there which was strange the entire store is clicked up they all live on boats or did and they all know each other personally and give the elderly woman upfront all the hours because they are part of some boat yacht club it's all very strange! I heard a lot in 2 days of work there. I go in there with no direction no communication going around asking what am I doing today just not good a delegation at all! My last day I was asked if I wanted to leave early and come in on my day off to work the truck and I said I have an interview so idk everything is up in the air. Next day I was let go which is totally fine I was actually filling out a w4 for my new job and waiting on my sec job interview, god took west marine out of my life to bless me with 2 amazing jobs 2 blocks from my house. End of the day west marine is just not s place to work especially for young ppl! Wouldn't recommend this place for work at all! They didn't even give me a schedule for the week til I told them I need it to schedule an interview and I was just directed to the wall why wasn't I let know this the first day, it's all bad delegation and bad communication! read more

This place is an absolute joke! I came in at 3:00pm on a weekday to ask about purchasing a Marine Stereo, the store was completely empty. I stood in the electronic section for almost ten minutes waiting for someone to help and I didn't see a single employee besides the cashier and they guy behind the fishing counter. I asked both of them twice to help me and they said they would send someone over. After another TEN minutes of being the ONLY CUSTOMER IN THE STORE someone came over and told me they could help me. I asked a couple of simple stereo questions and he replied with "I don't know anything about these stereos, there are only three of us working here today, and if you have questions you should come back another day". Customer service isn't consistent like it is in most local fishing / boating stores, they were cool the first time I came in. The guy knew what he was doing helped me out and everything. Second time another guy helped me wasn't friendly didn't know what he was doing. He man handled my fishing reels, if he didn't know what he was doing he should of called someone else to do it instead. A clearer example he was trying to take the old line out of my reel by setting it down on the glass counter hooking it up to the machine and flipping it on free spool while nothing was holding the reel in place it bird nested all over the place luckily it didn't go flying off the counter onto the ground. Other then That he was not friendly he just wanted to rush everything and close. I'm sure there's a lot of good things about west marine but this guy on the staff isn't one of them. read more

My usual marine supply store was to far away on the day I went in here but the employees inside deffinitely seemed like boat snobs. So if your a russian millionaire with a huge yacht I'm sure the staff here will bend backwards for you but if your just Joe Waterman like me then... just keep driving past this place and go to your normal haunts. read more
