Absolutely horrible experience! We walked around for fifteen minutes trying to find help and they were either talking story or not around. An older employee we had asked for help completely blew us off, held up a finger and said, "one sec", didn't even look at us and walked right off. I had to stand for five minutes waiting for one of the other guys to stop talking to his friend. Then after choosing a pair of sunglasses they take ten minutes looking for a pair in the back, coming back with nothing. They offered to take 10% off of the display pair but the when it came time to check out the cashier blew off the discount so luckily I caught it and told him to put the discount on the total. Be careful if you still choose to go. Nice store but the employees are clowns. read more

I stopped at West Marine on Nimitz today for a small order. As I approached the check out, I was encouraged by a small line with two cashiers. Unfortunately, the two cashiers were collaborating to help the customer in front of me. Minutes past as they stared at the cash register and seemed unable to accomplish what appeared to be a small task. Unfortunately, I find this to occur frequently. I don't know if it Is a terrible system or if the training is not adequate for the employees. Finally, I was waved to a new register by one of the cashiers. She quickly rang up my small order. I attempted to use a $10 coupon from my awards account to pay for part of the order. The cashier attempted to scan the page that I printed out. Then she tried to enter the coupon number manually. Finally, she said that she could see in the system that the awards certificate had not yet been used, but the system would not let her redeem it. She said that she would email the company to correct the problem and that I can use the certificate the next time I shopped. I said, "can't you just override it" and give me the credit that I am due. She said, "no", the company doesn't like employees to do these manually. Exorbitant prices, long wait to check out, and then unable to redeem a simple coupon that already resides in their system. This is why I avoid going to West Marine unless I just can't get the product anywhere else! read more

I like West Marine. It's a cool store and the customer service is very good. The sales ladies are always very polite and extremely attentive. They almost seem too qualified to work here. The store has a large selection of fishing and boating gear as well as apparel and footwear. They are also one of the only stores on island that sells Outdoor Research hats. read more

Don't shop here if your skin is darker than a latte! Time after time shopping here I've seen blatant racist generalizations of customers to the point where most local people are followed through the store treated like thieves. Last visit, as I was paying for my items, two local men walk in and asked where they could find something, the cashier proceeded to tell them an aisle then gets on her radio to inform the rest of the store they should keep an eye out for these two. She boldly did this in front of about five customers paying and waiting in line, unreal! These men were polite, about as clean cut as the rest of the customers, the only difference was skin color. The prices are exorbitant too, many items can be found online or at other marine dealers at a much better price. read more

I went to ask for a price quote and politely asked the female cashier to give me a price check because the item did not have a price tag. She gave me an unfriendly look and slowly checked on the price. Meanwhile, the other cashier next to her was helping a customer, however, she will kept looking over to me with an unfriendly look as well. Very poor customer relations. Only one friendly male service person was very helpful. Overall, I felt very uncomfortable in the store and wanted to leave. read more

I would like to share a very disturbing experience at the West Marine store in honolulu Hawaii that occurred on or about September 15, 2015. I was about to pay for some items at the register and a employee named Jeff approached me and told me I would have to get out of the store. He was extremely rude, nasty and offensive in nature. He did not display any customer service skills whatsoever nor did he have any interpersonal skills. His disrespectful attitude and hostility was in tolerable. Then he called on his radio to a guy named Jerry to hassle me some more. At first Jeff told me I could complete my purchase but this guy Jerry told me I had to leave right away otherwise he would call the cops. I've been helped by Jerry before and he was decent but I guess the whole place has a lousy attitude. I did ask Jerry for an explanation which he would not provide. Both these gentlemen should not be working there where interpersonal skills and common sense intelligence is important. I probably should deduct a star for prices being a bit on the steep side, but their stuff is in stock, no waiting or shipping, and quality has to be better on a boat, where you don't want stuff to rust out or fail when you are out to sea. But their people are so outstanding they get an extra credit star. Years ago, when GPS systems were brand new, the manager took a LOT of time to expain all the details and nuances of the systems to me, and when I came back to buy, he wouldn't let me leave until he took another 20 minutes to walk me through all the menus and features so I could hit the ground running. Where do you get customer service like this on a $150 item? Later, he helped me when I wanted to connect to my laptop, and other times when I came in he would pull out a new unit and say "Let's go outside so you can see how quickly this acquires a position from a cold start" -- even tho' he new I wasn't ready to buy a new unit. Tonight I needed a minor item (less than $4), and called ahead and knew I would arrive right at closing, but they still said come ahead, and unlocked the door and let me grab what I needed to finish my repair. These people are just wonderful. When you need an odd piece of rigging hardware, a custom made cable, a specific type of line or rope, they are the place to go, even if it is not for a boat. It's a one of a kind sort of place, and (as another reviewer said) with Kilgo's gone, sometime the only place to find what you need. Bought a VHF marine radio a year and a half ago. Recently it wasn't charging properly so took it in to talk to technician because maybe I wasn't doing it correctly since light would start blinking. He checked it and saw that I was correct. It was still under warranty so I thought that like most places, I'd have to go through the hassle of mailing it back, BUT I was pleasantly surprised. They checked their stock and had one more left so they exchanged it for a new one right away. Excellent service, knowledgeable technician, and immediate exchange. They left me outside in the back with a big paddleboard in cardboard, not put together, even though I am small and told them I needed help in putting the paddleboard on the roof rack (I had straps previously bought at West Marine). I have always like West Marine because of the large inventory of items, but the new GM is worth writing a review about. I was in the store a few weeks ago and Rob did a great job with helping me with an item that ended up taking quite a bit of time figuring out what would work. I was so impressed with his service I asked for the manger at checkout to tell him one of his employees did a great job assisting me and then I found out Rob was the GM! Then today I called the store and needed a special order item and Rob happened to answer the phone and once again it was service above and beyond the normal. I would not recommend going to the GM for normal questions unless you happened to run into him, but if you are having any issues with the Honolulu West Marine store I would highly recommend calling and asking for Rob to help you resolve the issue. read more

So I need to purchase a automatic drain flapper for my boat. I went on line to the West Marine site and found what I needed and ordered it. I selected the free shipping to the local store and was told it would take 10 to 16 days. I received a confirmation number and was told the local store would contact me when it came in. After a month without a call I went onto the West Marine live chat. The clerk report that the item had been delivered and was at the store in Honolulu. I contacted the store and the clerk said she had no idea what I walk talking about. She took my number and said somebody from the store would contact me. After waiting a day I went back on the on line chat and was told by the clerk that they would make contact with the store and would email me when they could figure out what was going on. Again all day without. Call from the Honolulu store. In the end I decided to cut my losses and emailed a cancellation of my order. Bottom line, great web site, good products, horrible customer service and follow up. If you live in Hawaii don't waist your time on an on line order or having anything sent to the store unless you want to wait a long time. read more

I hope the manager(s) and higher level management in this firm read this review. We have generally experienced "okay" customer service in this store, but today's experience was so extremely bad, it prompted me to actually write my very first review on ANYTHING. Monday, June 9, 2014 at 5:40pm, I walked into the store specifically for dock lines. After looking at the availability I made my selection and went to search for a sales person. None to be found. I noticed just 1 or 2 other customers walkiing around the store, so it was not busy at all. As I was walking out of the store, I saw two male employees talking story with one or two people who were not employees. I walked out of the store and was ready to go to POP Marine for my dock lines. I decided to go back in and asked the pleasant cashier for help to cut a length of dock line. She radioed one of the men talking story on the floor 20 yards away, and he shrugged his shoulders as if gesturing "huh? what? why me?". The cashier requested he help me again, and he again repeated the same body language. At that point I told the cashier, that's okay, I'm going to POP Marine, and walked out. Don't waste your time at this Honolulu West Marine location. Go to POP where there are PROFESSIONALS with REAL KNOWLEDGE to help you. read more
