Oh dear. What's happened to West Rib? I used to LOVE coming here, when i was a mere stripling of a tourist way back in 2010, and i have returned many times. I organized an overnight camping trip JUST so i could have dinner at West Rib again, man, what a disappointment. Was the place always this run down, and shabby? Did the sun get in my eyes and blind me? Well anyway, so after me demanding we go to West Rib, yet seeing most other eateries in town absolutely BULGING with tourists, i was a little taken aback by the solo diner in the outside space at West Rib. Gamely i ploughed on with my choice, thinking "maybe i should have gone somewhere else" The server was a nice enough young girl, and she bowed each time she visited the table, and i have absolutely no issues with her - very polite and nice. When she brought the menu, i was shocked. I am sure, i am positive it used to be fatter, had many more choices, every other time I've been here. I distinctly remember a certain sauce or dip i used to order that had a funky name, and was sort of like a schmear but runnier. Now there's only a single page to order from. I wanted to leave. I honestly was on the verge of getting up and going. Anyway, I ordered the Stubbs Burger - hadn't realized he was the Mayor Cat dude, nor that the burger was named after him. Husband ordered the special which was a Brisket Sandwich, and some Jalapeno Poppers to start. The food was fairly fast to come out, and the Poppers were hot, and came with a cool, creamy sauce, maybe ranch? They were ok, taste like every other Jalapeno Popper I've had, I'm not that keen on them to be honest. Then the entrees came out very quickly after that, so i just got started on my burger. Well - see I've been off potatoes in all their glorious forms since February, but these beer-battered fries looked so appetizing, that i grabbed a handful and distributed them evenly across my burger. And i must say - the burger was perfect. I like a well-done, no-pink burger. This was absolutely exactly how i would have asked for it to be cooked if given the choice, i had to take off the onion and the tomato off (they give me stomachache) but of course the 10 fries i put in there filled the gap nicely. And the cheese was oozing very beautifully and dripping out of the bottom. It was gorgeous. He said his Brisket Sandwich was really good too, so despite the place's shabby, and rundown appearance, and slimmer menu - what they cook, they do it very well. I did hear disquieting rumours regarding West Rib, from people around town when i said i was going there for dinner, so whatever they've done, has gotten them a bad reputation in town, which is quite sad really. It holds fond memories for me, due to it being one of the first places my husband took me when we weren't married yet, and i hadn't moved here. read more

I can't recommend this place anymore. They say they will be open when you talk to them (in person- they also run tbe grocery store), then they aren't. They told me they are having a hard time finding staff this year. Every time I've stayed in Talkeetna they've been closed, even when they told me they planned to be open. They aren't updating their website or voice-mail either. The place is dilapidated and run down as well. Such a shame. read more

My husband and I went in and it started alright. The only server working wasn't the friendliest but pretty attentive server nonetheless. We ordered a couple of beers, personally I enjoyed my husbands more than what was suggested for me. We ordered some wings and they were good, hot and fresh. The problem came when our burgers arrived about 25 minutes after the wings and ICE COLD. They had a "safety meeting" while our food was up and barely sat up there? My cheese on my burger didn't even have the opportunity to melt. When our server finally came back we decided to take our business elsewhere and just close out for our wings and beer. read more

It has been almost 10 years to the day that I'd been here, and I'm happy to say that the food has just gotten better and with the same stellar service, so I am adding one more star. Stopped mid-day and sat on the deck. I ordered Stubbs with coleslaw while another ordered the same with fries. Fries and coleslaw were delicious. Almost perfect. Dang those 1/2# burgers tho! I've had spendier, less tasty, and smaller burgers in Anchorage, and to get this quality here during inflation times? I'll take it, and I'll be back. Wanted a little lunch so we decided to stop in. The lady in the grill area came out and told us she was the only one working and if we wanted to eat, it would be awhiles. Obviously she was overwhelmed and was quite rude, felt like we were inconveniencing her. We decided to get a seat and the tables and chairs were still wet from a previous rain. As my husband looked around, he noticed 5 tables of patrons and no one had any food in front of them. Things were not looking good and with the lady's bad attitude, we decided to take our $$ elsewhere. *Only* 5 stars, because I can't give more. I ate here last year, and the food was very good. I don't remember what my main course was, but I do remember that I had the caribou chili, which I liked. Service was good. This year, I was back in the booming metropolis of Talkeetna, Alaska, and this time I had my partner along for the ride. Based on my last years experience, we decided to stop here for lunch. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. We had lunch on the patio, as it was a nice day. Once again, the service was great, and this time, the food was off the $&*(#ing chain!!! She had the halibut sandwich, which she enjoyed very much. I had the halibut with a parmesan/dill sauce. O...M...G.... It was *SO* good. The fish was so flaky and tender, and the sauce was amazing!!! I used to make fun of Rachael Ray, because on her old Food Network show "$40 dollars a day". *Every* time she would take a bite of food, her face would contort like she was having "The big O." With this meal, I could actually relate. it was *THAT* good!!! If I were to leave this great and glorious planet we call earth, and shuffle off my mortal coil, and this were to be my last meal, I would be leaving a happy man. Lunch with food, soda, and tip came out to about $60 for both of us. Expensive? Yeah, but we're talking small town Alaska, here, so not really too horrible. Who doesn't want to have a drink and some food in the town where the cat is the mayor! You get to the place by walking through the general store that borders the street out front or I guess you could sneak around the back of the building and try and get in that way? We sat at the bar and had a beer and chatted with some locals and they have a beautiful outside patio if the weather is permitting. But the bar inside is old and crusty and it looks like time hasn't touched it ; it's a great place to get a cold drink. We decided on ordering some mussels which can be kind of sketchy out in the bush and they turned out to be excellent. The broth was just right. The crostinis they served it with were lightly toasted and sopped up some of the juice. Parking in Talkeetna is all over the place and I didn't use the restroom so I can't report on it. read more

Ok, so we didn't quite get the allure of why people drive out of their way from the Highway to go to Talkeetna (minimal cool shopping to be done, very few dining options, etc.) but boy were we glad to read about West Rib! We were in just the mood for a juicy burger cooked medium rare just like we love! And fries hot out of the frier to balance out the burger. Perfection! What wasn't such a great part of the vibe was hearing PJ, our host/server, talking to other patrons about how stupid tourists are and acting pretty condescending toward us in all of our interactions. I guess he doesn't like what he does and it shows but we got over it for a good meal to break up our drive from Anchorage to Denali! read more

We drove 2 hours to go get the novelty huge burger as we saw on Food Network. We've gotten it 2 times before. It was a great place to take company from out of state. We were so disappointed. They no longer have the same menu or the big burger. Cold reception and the menu is more of a deli menu now. They lost our patronage. There were hardly any people there. This is about as "off the beaten path" as one can get in downtown Talkeetna. It's tucked behind (and linked in to) the General Store where the mayor: Stubbs the Cat lives. They offer solid "burgers n' beers" fare at a decent price with shorter waits than most other local eateries. They also have a nice outdoor seating area and the staff are very friendly. I got the caribou burger because I enjoy eating non-traditional meats. It was good but not great. A tad bit dry. Nitpick: Just to express some solidarity with fellow Yelper Lard Belly E: the logo color choices are, indeed, terrible. I usually don't notice things like this but...WOW! Change those colors! We decided that seafood is to Alaska as bbq is to Kansas City - if you can't do that, you may as well close your doors. Well, despite the name, West Rib Pub & Grill had the most yummy Alaskan king crab I have ever had in my entire life. The size alone was overwhelming - my husband and I shared one order which comes with French fries. So funny - it's like the Alaskan version of fish and chips except the fish is so fresh and melts in your mouth. It's a quaint little place off Main Street in Talkeetna, and is attached to this cute little general store. They close at 10:00, so get there early. The service is friendly and fast. read more

They never seem to have ribs is what some of the locals say, or they are always "out of them". Came here this evening with a party of six. Most of us had the halibut fish and chips which were very good. The halibut was fresh and moist. The rest of the food was just so-so. Despite what some of the other yelpers have experienced, our server was very friendly and accommodating. She let me substitute a side salad for french fries, and let us all have separate checks. Came with two friends. Service was nonexistent and staff were unfriendly which is surprising for a town that is clearly geared towards tourism. We order buffalo wings - the sauce was basically hot sauce mixed with ketchup. "Special" fish tacos that were $20 for three cold tacos with a pile of coleslaw & a sprinkle of fish. Thank you, West Rib Pub & Grill for giving me the best pig-out experience of my life, and for the wonderful service! I bow down to your greatness. I arrived in Talkeetna around 10am, and had to leave at 12:30 in order to get back in Anchorage in time for the Princess Cruise shuttle. However, West Rib Pub open at 12pm!!! I need at least an hour to eat the epic Seward's Folly! What should I do!? We asked the restaurant staff if there is any possible way to get it to go, but considering how huge the sandwich is, they said it would be pretty much impossible. So, I devised up a plan. I sat down and waited for the burger to be made. I asked the kitchen to make it as fast as possible, and waited in anticipation. Having seen the burger on Man v. Food, the joy kept building up as I counted the slices of cheese and ham in mind. In about 15 min, the burger came out in all of its glory: 2 1lb caribou patties, 6 slices of American cheese, 6 slices of Swiss cheese, 12 slices of bacon, a pound of ham, "FatAss Sauce" (mayonnaise, horseradish, bacon, and balsamic vinaigrette), caramelized onions, lettuce and tomatoes, and 3 sourdough burger buns. I took the first bite of meaty fatty goodness and fell in love. The caribou meat is very tender, and the thick layer of cheese adds an amazing text and texture to the whole deal. The ham is also very well cooked and makes everything just out of this world. How non-Kosher can a Jew get? Who cares if my arteries will get clogged! I never know if I'll be back to experience it again! I took a couple of bites and...oh did I mention it comes with a pound of fries? Anyway, I took the first couple of bites, and it was time to go. Will I have to part with my burger? NEVER!!! I asked for 3 boxes: one for the top part, one for the bottom part, and one for the fries. Surprisingly, we were given the boxes despite the awkward look. I took the three boxes with me, and managed to eat the top half of the burger on the 3 hour drive down to Anchorage, along with half of the fries that my dad ate. I was about to start the 2nd half, but just couldn't handle it anymore, so I saved the rest for later. If you're ever in Talkeetna and are ever adventurous enough to go for this burger, don't miss out. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity that you might never get to try again. Who cares if it's $26?! At the beginning of Talkeetna's Main Street in downtown is West Rib. This pub is connected to Nagley's General Store and a Talkeetna tourism information store. Nagley's sells liquor and any snack stuff you may find at a local 7-11. We stopped by for lunch on a Saturday and the outdoor patio was completely full, which left only a few tables inside, or one in the bar area. We decided to sit near the bar (of course!). While we were sipping our beers we even got to see the Mayor of the town walking around doing Mayor stuff (it's a cat named Stubs). Because it was such a hot day, lots of gnats were buzzing around in circles in the middle of the room. Even with some of the staff taking turns with the electric fly swatter, it seemed like the kept multiplying. But we didn't care, we were starving and looking forward to a beer and burger. The menu is filled with your typical bar favorites like burgers, wings, and mozzarella sticks as well as plenty of seafood. If you're up for it, they also have the infamous Seward's Foley burger that towers so high it made even Adam Richman's eyes bulge. Instead, I got the build-your-own burger with a caribou patty, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickle with a side of fries. The burger was actually pretty small and it was served on a hard, thick ciabatta-like bun -- definitely not the normal sesame seed ones seen in every other picture. The caribou patty was actually incredibly tasty with a nice blend of seasonings, but it too was way smaller than expected. Perhaps they ran out of other buns? who knows, but the ones we got were a bummer. West Rib is a fun crossroads of the world type of place with scribbles and notes covering the walls that were written by people from all across the country. After just looking for a few minutes we could account for almost half the states in the union. Even though the burgers weren't what we were expecting, the caribou meat itself was amazing and worth checking out on its own. Holy geeze-us. Four of us girls tackled the Seward Folly burger. We had seen it on Man Vs Food and made the trip out to Talkeetna just to order it. We were there when they opened and got a table outside in the back (there are two entrances...through the store and then on the side to the restaurant). I have to say, that thing is an ugly pile of mess. But the paparazzi were out like it was the most famous thing in town. As soon as they brought it to our table, everyone around us asked to take a picture of it. We politely obliged like any other good burger owner would do. Even cut into fourths, it was still overwhelming to finish. The caribou burger was surprisingly delicious!!! Even though it insanely big, the seasoning was perfect. The yummy Fat Ass sauce needs to be bottled. I could have passed on the ham and 12 slices of bacon but it was all divine. Bring a group to try out your skills. And thank goodness for nearby bathrooms because our hands smelled like burger all day despite soap and water. read more

I came here for lunch and for appetizers during my stay in Talkeetna. Fairly cool vibe, the food came out hot, quick, and was great. For lunch I had the caribou chili -- it was fantastic. My partner had the the burger -- really great burger. For happy hour (after 9 pm!) we had half price appetizers. They were not bad (for Alaskan standards) but weren't "blow my mind away" good. They have a fairly decent variety of nice Alaskan brews on tap. Simple, cool place to get a burger. Cool mountain accoutrement adorning walls, obviously in the spirit of Denali. You definitely feel like you are in a burger joint that is at the base of one of the tallest mountains in the world. If I were in Talkeetna again, I'd come back. read more

This pub style restaurant is tucked away off the main strip, which makes it fantastic if you're looking for a place away from the touristy hustle & bustle. My fiancé & I went in on a Thursday at 3pm. There is plenty of seating indoors and outdoors (umbrellas provide coverage for rain). They were playing what seemed to be an internet radio station that included Mumford & Sons, the Neighborhood, Green Day, & The Offspring, and someone in the kitchen was playing Avenge Sevenfold. The kitchen is on the patio but it's covered & screened. We did see a mouse run along the patio, but hey, this is Alaska. The staff was courteous and knowledgeable about the drinks & food. There wasn't a huge selection of beers, but they were all good quality. I tried the Tundra Apple, the Agave, and the Irish Death, but the Oosik and the Ice Axe were my favorite. For lunch we shared the Northern Lights burger with the caribou patty & fatass sauce and the Halibut & Chips. Both entrees were delicious. The caribou patty was tasty but light, and the fixings for the Northern Lights burger provided a bang but were very well balanced. I wasn't too impressed with the fatass sauce, but my husband loved it with his fries. I was surprised that they only gave me one piece of Halibut, but after breaking into it, I could see that it was way bigger than it initially looked. LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this place! The service was awesome. The waiter was quirky in a really adorable way and was very friendly. He was always nearby without helicoptering over us. The beer selection was on point. They have a beer that is brewed especially for them called "Ice Axe." It is 9% alcohol, but it is a smooth drink with a great aftertaste. Limit is 2 per person. ; ) The food was all "close your eyes and sigh" good. We had: Alaska Halibut Sandwich - I HATE fish, but I had a bite of this and absolutely loved it. It wasn't fishy at all and tasted very fresh. Caribou Chili- Delicious and warming! Burger with Fatass Sauce- I don't know what was in the sauce, but it was hella good. Fries- Generous portion and crispy, salty yumminess. Chicken Tenders- Super meaty and crispy. This place is famous for their Seward`s Folly, a monstrous burger featured on Man vs. Food. Drove out from Anchorage with the kids to look at a property in the area and promised we'd eat at the place we saw on Man Vs Food, West Rib Pub. The bribe worked great for a peaceful and patient ride, and the burgers were really as good as we had hoped. We each ordered The Stubbs Burger (a bacon burger with two kinds of cheese) and I upgraded to Parmesian Fries. Forgot to order their special sauce, though it wasn't exactly needed. The burgers had a delicious charbroiled flavor, the buns were nicely toasted so as not to end up soggy and the fries were nice and crisp. Be prepared for a wait to be seated as it turns out, we weren't the only ones who are fans of Man vs Food. Two customers did order the Seward's Folly while we were there, neither finished. The menu did offer many other items like sandwiches, salads and chilies, but, honestly, it would be pretty hard to convince me to try anything but a burger for a while. Totally pissed off at blowing over $20 at the Roadhouse on crap food, I headed for the place I had seen on the Travel Channel...I ordered a burger and the kids got fish and chips. I mean, Talkeetna is nothing more than an expensive tourist trap now so why bother with a faux folksy roadhouse???? Sure, even this place was packed with senior citizens and Europeans who thought the whole town was "fabulous, just fabulous" but at least the food was good. Damn good. Or maybe it tasted better because I was still mad about the Roadhouse and Talkeetna in general. My kids and I had just taken the drive from Wasilla over Hatcher Pass and decided to head north, so I could show them how cool Talkeetna was. I had no idea that somehow in the last 18 years the place could transform itself to a Mackinaw Island without the view and worse, packed with cars and even worse, giant tour busses. Major reality check. Major depression. I ordered the "fat ass sauce" for my burger just to try it and it was char broiled and good - I think cream cheese, mayo and cucumber and onion are the secret sauce...nice. The fish and chips were done perfectly - golden and crispy. Service was prompt. Yes, this is a bar - lots of outside seating - don't bring your babies in strollers - it's too crowded for that. At least it's loud so you can't hear the kids screaming. read more

I was also constantly swatting and brushing off little fruit flies that were landing on my drink glass. While I'm sure the food is fresh and the portions large, I was unable to eat half my meal due to the bug I only noticed after taking two bites of my clams. The whole thing basically fell apart when I started eating it because the bread and meat was so dry. Haven't had to do that in a longgggg time. The bread they use is just not good. Went here while in Alaska visiting family. This place was recommended after being on TV (Man vs food or something like it). Ordered two meals and an appetizer being the only group in the restaurant. After getting an order of nachos, the server didn't bring us plates or utensils and never came back to refill beverages. After an additional 45 minutes post appetizer, we finally got our meals (2 burgers), which were both way over cooked. After that was when we realized they never asked how we wanted the burgers cooked. A place that is known for their burgers... I'm sure there's better places in town to get a meal. I can't believe I didn't review this last summer after we ate there. Our visit to Talkeetna was a delight and eating lunch at West Rib just added to that. It's quirky, it's funky, and my caribou burger was truly outstanding. I would love to have seen someone take the "Seward's Folly" burger challenge: to eat two 1lb patties surrounded by layers of ham, cheese bacon, and other toppings, all on a sourdough bun, which must be eaten in one sitting! read more

Food Chanel was right once again. Stopped at the West Rib Pub on the way back to Anchorage from Denali. I was pleased with the menu and beer choices. I had the fish and chips. They hit the spot especially since I was tired and hungry. Talkeetna was a welcoming town and I plan to return next summer to experience the white water rafting! Great elk burger and halibut (fish) tacos! Good local brews and reasonably priced! Prices are reasonable and group friendly.

We noticed how Man Vs. Food came here to eat their Seward's Folly Caribou Burger. "Seward's Folly", a 4 1/2-pound double-stacked burger made with Caribou meat (in the form of two 1-lb. patties) and topped with American and Swiss cheese, 12 slices of bacon, a pound of ham, "FatAss Sauce" (made with mayonnaise, horseradish, bacon, and balsamic vinaigrette), caramelized onions, lettuce and tomatoes, and served inside toasted sourdough bread. The burger is held together with a small Alaskan flag and served with a pound of fries- taken from wikipedia. So we had to try and order one. We decided to split the 5 lbs. burger between two people. It was delicious, but I couldn't even finish half of it. They also make their own cream soda. They have the best cream soda ever! I am happy I went there! read more
