I went to return a couple paint rollers that left plastic pieces all over my door i was painting. The rollers said they were for smooth to semi smooth surface painting. Cory, a manager at Ace proceeded to mansplain to me that ​ I chose the wrong rollers for the job . He was unsympathetic and Unapologetic that I would now have to wait for the paint to dry and sand it down and repaint it. I have been living in West Salem for over 30 years and never dealt with anyone so unprofessional and condescending. He must be related to the owner because he has no customer service skills and doesn't care that I was upset about our interaction. I was buying more rollers when I went there. read more

After spending hundreds of dollars (and probably much more) at ACE in West Salem over the past seven years, today marks the end. I needed a replacement part for the TORO tool I bought at this store. The dismissive salesman said they didn't have the part. "What about the other ACE store in town?" I asked. "Couldn't tell you. Each store is owned separately" he said and walked off. No offer of calling the other store. Nothing. So much for ACE and its great TV ads touting its FRIENDLY service. When you provide friendly, thoughtful service, then I am fine with higher prices. When you don't care about customers and won't help them then they your value proposition disappears. read more

I'm a regular here, and my last visit served as a gentle reminder for me to finally sing their praises. First of all, I hate going to Lowes or Home Depot, and this place has everything I need for a job 99% of the time. It's also much, much closer to to my home. The staff here are more helpful and knowledgeable by a factor of 2 or 3. On my last visit, I needed a replacement battery for my car's remote key fob. It's one of those small silver disc batteries. I found the right one, checked with an employee to make certain it was the correct one, he took it, and the key fob from me, and with a few deft, expert moves, he removed the battery from the packaging, pried open the fob, swapped out the old battery for the new one, reassembled the key fob, and handed it back to me, along with the battery packaging (so they could scan the bar code at the register when I paid for it). This took less than five minutes, while we were both standing in the aisle next to the batteries display. Hahahaha, that would taken me at least 20 minutes of frustrated muttering at my desk, and I still might not have done it correctly, because I am a MORON in terms of even the simplest sort of assembly/disassembly. So, thanks, whomever that employee was. These guys are the best. THE BEST. read more

I have been in here a few times, mostly buying car related stuff. Especially key cutting. This is the only place in Salem were i have 100% success with auto key cutting. The customer service is great! Polite , talkative if you want them to be and know their stuff If you want your car keys cut that work every time come here. So, After most businesses have stopped requiring masks the West Salem Ace Hardware will not let you in the building without a mask. I understood the mask mandate as it was dictated and I complied. However as of two weeks ago the masks were not required for people that had the vaccine most businesses have stopped verbally accosting people that don't wear masks. I challenge everyone who disagrees with the mask policy not the vaccine policy to stop going to the West Salem Ace Hardware this decision is an owner decision as it is a franchise. read more

Apparently not only are we in the middle of a phased reopening during a pandemic we are also experiencing a hemlock bark shortage. Having gone to my more local Ace Hardware to pick some up, I was informed that "the processing plant that provides all of the hemlock bark for our area burned down and possibly the grove as well so no one around here will have hemlock this year" ....hmmm, what to do. After calling another nursery to see if they had any in stock I learned that while, yes, one of the larger suppliers for this region had indeed experienced this catastrophic loss there were other suppliers in the area. On a whim, I called the West Salem Ace Hardware to see what their supply was. I was going to be in the area so maybe, just maybe...score! Not only did they have hemlock bark they pulled aside a quantity for me until I was able to get there after a meeting. Their customer service was excellent! read more

I came in for a copy of a key and every staff member was extremely helpful. I made a phone call to see if they made key copies and the lady on the phone was very friendly. When I arrived, I had 2 employees trying to work on helping me with my key. The lady on the phone came to see if we were doing ok.. and as I left I was asked by another employee if I found everything I was looking for. Honestly, best service I've seen in a while. read more

I placed an online order for a smoker from this location and it was such a hassle. First off the location stated that they had it in stock and available for pick up same day. Well that was a lie because when I attempted to contact the location to verify my order they claimed the smoker wasn't available and it would be ordered from the warehouse. Not a big deal right well they ignored my phone calls initially and were extremely rude over the phone. Not to mention the idiot that answered the phone couldn't come up with any sort of answer to the problem. This location was unprofessional and I'll take my business elsewhere. I have been a long time customer of ace hardware so this is truly disappointing. read more

A+! I had a not-so-fantastic experience a few weeks ago with the paint department at this location, and wrote a review about it. The owner promptly contacted me and told me that she is taking steps to rectify the situation, and apologized for the experience. She also gave me an store credit to make sure I come back and give them another chance. People make mistakes, and I get that. Owning up to it and making the situation right goes a long way with me. I was still planning on going back anyway, but I really appreciated that elevated level of customer service. I know that I would NEVER get that kind of service from a big-box home improvement store. I love this little hardware store. Local owners, very helpful, great service, and great deals often. Sure it isn't a Home Depot but that's okay as I would not want one over in this area. Frankly, when I need random things for around the house or a quick repair, I go here first. West Salem is lucky to have a good little hardware store like this. Staff has been helpful with returns, suggestions for garden items, and just downright friendly. 99% of the time these guys have all the little odds and ends I need. I mostly use ACE for their great selection of nuts, bolts and other obscure hardware, that would otherwise be impossible to find locally. I shop here often and the staff is ALWAYS courteous and helpful, but today Vincent took customer service to a new level. I was in the paint section looking for a small can of a a particular blue and red. Couldn't find what I wanted. Vincent noticed me and asked if he could help. We looked at various swatches, without luck. then he suggested we find a dolor close to what I was looking for and then he would customize it. I said ok, found a couple that were close, told him what I was looking for. He then did his magic with his mixing equipment and walla gave me exactly what i was looking for. It took a bit of time, because of the calculations involved, but he was helpful, professional, and courteous the entire time. I would give him 6 stars if I could. The cans of paint he sold me were the smallest possible, but he treated me like I was buying several gallons. Well Done. read more

Wow! This store is such a gem! They stock so many quality items of various types that it is easy one-stop shopping. Plants, housewares, BBQ and cookware items, snacks, and fun decorating and organizing items. It is fun to find surprises and the employees are the nicest, most helpful group every visit! Fantastic staff. I was so impressed by all the staff today. I needed to make bug screens for the windows of a box truck we're converting into a camper. Vincent and Ben helped me find what I needed and explained how to make everything work. It was a multi-step process. I bought the screen, went out to the van, measured things, pulled out the frame, went back in, asked more questions, got more advice, then bought 2 more items. In addition, Vincent cut a key for me that other shops were unable to make. Even the modern key kiosk service couldn't do it. I love the personalized service. Everyone at the store is friendly and ready to take time to listen to you and help you figure out how to complete your project. This West Salem store is great - well stocked; helpful, knowledgeable, friendly employees; and free delivery in West Salem. I just bought 42 bags of Scotts NatureScape bark mulch and it looks great. I shopped Lowe's and Home Depot and they were $.50 per bag cheaper, but wanted $75 to deliver. I am now a fan of Ace Hardware. Also, just bought my driveway sealer at this store - top name brand, and the same price as Lowe's and Home Depot. I will be buying at Ace Hardware from now on! read more

I stop here two to three times a week on the way home from work. I don't think that they haven't had what I needed more than once or twice. One time I was looking for a particular really small size warm white tube light bulb, and they had an empty hook where it should have been. This was a Sunday. The man at the checkout said he would order me one and it should be there on Tuesday. Believe it or not, they called me on Tuesday afternoon and said your light bulb is in. Are you kidding me? I couldn't find this bulb and Lowes or Home Depot, but Ace got it for me in 48 hours. That's service!!!! read more

They are very community oriented with the owners serving on nonprofit boards and helping other nonprofits in the community.
