Very convenient nursery in West Seattle for the weekend warrior or serious green thumb. THE ROSES: Helpful and pleasant staff who clearly have an enthusiasm for their products. The give very knowledgeable advice. Pretty good selection of plants, as well as soils, fertilizers, pots, fountains, and other accessories. The quality of the plants are quite good as well, and the staff takes pains to ensure the inventory is well-tended. THE THORNS: The place is somewhat handicapped by its size. Not as big as Sky Nursery, Molbak's, or Swanson's, they have a rather limited parking lot, and I suspect their variety of products isn't quite as broad as their bigger competitors. They seem a bit pricey as well. THE VERDICT: Handy West Seattle location and delightful staff more than compensate for higher prices, tight parking, and a possibly limited selection. It all started with a gift card in the mail from my mom - "You have $100 to spend at West Seattle Nursery!" Thanks mom, what a cool idea! So off we went. While not the biggest nursery, it's large enough to carry an impressive assortment of indoor plants, outdoor plants, and trees. Not only that, in the greenhouse area they have some interesting tropical and bonsai selections. What really set WSN above the rest is their knowledge and service. Everyone I spoke with, and I mean EVERYONE knew their stuff. I consider myself to be a green thumb, and the staff here blew my mind. I could have spent half the day talking to their Japanese Maple expert, but after a few pokes in the ribs my wife reminded me that this wasn't an option. The prices seemed fair to me, and the quality of plant and tree has been amazing. We love our Japanese Maple trees, and our flower bed was poppin' last summer all thanks to West Seattle Nursery. As long as I live in Seattle, this is going to be my spot! read more

This place is great! I have been buying plants here for over 7 years and have always found them super helpful. They have a great selection of other garden supplies (trellises, mulch, home décor, etc.). I have had interactions with just about every employee and every time I come away with a wonderful experience. Just yesterday I was looking for a particular color and variety of plant and the salesperson escorted me to a back table where the very best healthiest plants were-I am so excited to plant them this weekend! read more

My husband and I were looking to expand our love of houseplants and thought this would be the perfect place to get some pointers. We walked in and asked an older woman with glasses and bangs if she could help us find an indoor plant that does well in low light. You would have thought we asked her which plants would be good for our dog to take a shit on, the way she reacted. She was condescending, unapproachable and left us feeling incredibly embarrassed. I don't know how someone like this still has a job in customer service but we will not be returning and have spread the word to our friends and family to take their business elsewhere to avoid leaving a small business feeling confused and shamed. Get a job in a cubicle where you don't have to deal with the public because lady, you do not belong around people. read more

Great place if you would like to start gardening and you are also craving the feeling of belittlement! Their employee training must include a workshop on how to best disparage their customers. If you would like to start gardening, True Value is cheaper and WikiHow is free. Tried getting help with my tomato plants on one occasion and some indoor plants on another. I talked to 3 different employees and all of them seemed disgusted that I was not born an expert in botany. Would it kill you to answer my questions with grace and then wait until after I leave to laugh at me behind my back? I always try to shop small first, but I certainly won't with WS Nursery. read more

I typically love to go to this local west Seattle Nursery but today was the last straw:(. They have an appointment process due to the covid pandemic fine! I went about a month ago to get starts for Our garden and it was lovely experience both my husband and I attended no problem! I needed additional bushes for an area of our yard we decided to clean up and made an additional appointment for today. However, I waited about 10 days for this appointment. I missed that the policy is each adult needs an appointment because the website is challenging to use and make an appointment. I tried to call but they aren't answering the phone due to being too busy you only get recordings. Anyways, my husband and I showed today for my appointment and were told only 1 of us could get in with my appointment. I said we were here a mionth ago and didn't need 2 appts I was even kind enough at that time to cancel additional appts I had so others could use them! Anyways, after he said he could Only let one of us in and I explained that we were unaware of that he said he already let other people in.....what?!?!? Who decides who gets in and who doesn't with it without an appointment. Seems they are choosing who to be kind to and who to not allow in...... My neighbor goes without an appointment and they let her in according to her..... Not sure about this olive and I think it is bad business to turn away local west Seattle residents! Agreed with other post I will spend my money at true value or Home Depot before returning to the nursery with their discriminating, inconsistent policy! Unhelpful staff and substandard quality of plants. Also the staff give incorrect information. I had some questions whether some specific veggie starts were organic - when the label did not mention it at all and the staff replied "everything we have is organic certified", which is not true. 4 of the 5 plants I bought here got diseased or just were of poor quality. I rooted out most of them. Same season, same soil, plants from an another nursery are doing well. read more

First time here and I stopped to find a gift for my dad. With such a small space in a busy city, I like how they have organized their store and it was easy to be socially distant from others during this time. I am glad there are employees staffed to ensure the indoor locations are not crowded. The plants are healthy and I like all the tags they include with all the care instruction. The prices are good compared to other nurseries. I know I will be back here in the future. read more

Spring was unfolding, but we were all stuck in isolation, trying to stay alive. The empty pots on my porch were crying out for occupants. I ordered a few through the mail, but they were slow, and they were expensive. Then my daughter-in-law told me that West Seattle Nursery had a shop-by-appointment system. I was thrilled, and I made my appointment. I had to wait nearly two weeks for my turn, but it was worth it! I'm one of those people you read about, over 60 and with underlying medical issues, so just running over to the lawn and garden big-box store near me didn't feel safe. When I arrived at WSN, all the entrances were locked. I saw a store employee by the large gate and asked where to go if I have an appointment. He said, "Right here!" I went in, and I had a lot of elbow room. I came within 6 feet of other shoppers twice (briefly), but all told, this system worked really well. And the plants! The tuberous begonias are huge, and they're healthy. All the plants on my list were gorgeous.Twice I asked for help because I couldn't find something, and both times I was given clear directions and found what I wanted right away. Although I very much wanted just to stay in that store, wandering up and down the rows of shrubs, and flowers, and trees, and pretty pots, I was able to find everything I was looking for and pay for it inside my 30 minute appointment time. I needed potting soil, but when I pulled my vehicle up, an employee loaded it into my car with no wait at all. I don't live in West Seattle, and with the West Seattle Bridge down, I never could have found this nursery without Google. But the trek was well worth it. Someday this pandemic will be genuinely over, but when that happens, I can totally see myself driving to West Seattle anyway. It's the best thing that's happened to me all spring! read more

Sad to do this but I must. They have the WORST customer service ever. I asked for help at 20 minutes before closing and the employee said she couldn't because she was too busy closing. I've spent thousands of dollars over the years on plant, gifts, all kinds of things. Most of their employees seem to be annoyed, condescending and generally rude, like really rude. I set some stuff on the counter to purchase and went to grab the rest and an employee moved my stuff to the coffee side. Well when I went to grab my stuff the guy that works there blew up at me and snapped that they served food there, it wasn't even me who put it there!!! Avoid. The only thing I'll miss is the orchids and you can buy them at Met market, Whole Foods, anywhere else where your money seems to be appreciated. read more

I had a really great shopping experience here today. I went with my 15 month old son who of course loves to touch everything and everyone was super sweet to him. They woman who helped me pick out my two new house plants was just great. Super patient and showed me a lot of options. The whole place is absolutely beautiful and I'll be going back soon for more plants. read more

I emailed Swanson's and Sky and both got back to me.  This is the second time I have had no response from West Seattle nursery, even though it's a local one I'd like to support.  A couple years ago I also waited months for a plant that never came.  It's also a bit pricey compared to other full service nurseries. Such a neat shop. This place reminds me of the Edmonds Nursery before they closed up. Helpful staff, quality plants, and nice accessories. I have been in a couple times now and have found their staff very eager to educate me on houseplants. They took as long as necessary to make sure I brought home the right one. Every time I read a negative review here, I wonder if we are shopping at the same place. Everyone is alway insanely nice; I get asked multiple times if I need help. Even with a small child, the employees are sweet and responsive. The selection is well curated and space clean and lovely. It's small but perfect for the neighborhood. Great selection of airplants and cacti. Prices are relatively reasonable considering it is a small shop in the big city. Love it! read more

I really love the selection here-- it's a neighborhood nursery with anything you could possibly need (pots, plants, soil)! Plus, the prices are comparable to a big box store! Wow those girls in the greenhouse are so nice! Every time I go in everyone has great energy and a big smile on their face.

I've heard great things about this nursery and was excited to check it out this morning. I walked into the greenhouse part of the nursery and saw two ladies working behind the counter. One looked super busy, and was working with someone else (a vendor or a customer) while the other woman was behind the counter looking down at some paperwork. Neither of them greeted me. As I walked around, the woman behind the counter did not say a word. Another patron walked in and I noticed the woman behind the counter look up, not say anything, and look back down at her paperwork. To me, greeting customers is super important. As I walked up to the counter with a purchase (that I went back and forth about making because of the feeling of not even being wanted there), the woman perked up and said hello. When I asked her a question about care/light for a plant that I saw on a shelf, she told me she didn't know and it seemed like she just made something up. She didn't offer to look it up, ask someone else who worked there, or anything. She just replied with "I don't know.". The whole experience was just kind of "womp womp". The place is absolutely beautiful and I would definitely recommend going for their product, but from my experience today, the customer service needs work. read more

Ugh seriously! Super snobby place. I've been here a few times and they are never overly helpful, but after today's visit I won't come back. I was looking for a specific plant and tried for a while to find an employee to "give me the time of day" which was difficult. Although there were many staff members there, they all were pre occupied with what looked like an incoming delivery. (PS the delivery truck was blocking the parking lot so I had to park a few blocks away.) After repeating my question about if they had a specific plant a few times an employee directed me to ask someone else and when I asked her, she simply said "no". No suggestions for another similar plant, and no apology. Just a strait face and a bad attitude. Unfortunately I also wanted some other plants but I felt so uncomfortable and unwelcome there that I turned around and just walked the two blocks back to my car without buying anything. Customer service is super easy, and these people work in a gorgeous setting and it's a beautiful day. I wish I had felt more welcome to spend my money there. Sadly I am leaving now with no plants. Molbacks in Woodinville is much better and worth the drive. read more

Well, as a long-time West Seattle native, I'm done trying to like our hometown nursery. I've been coming here time and again....each time hoping it was just an "off" day for the staff. But after three major customer service misses in the last three visits, I'm done. I will take the journey to Swanson's and feel good about giving my money to a nursery that appreciates their customers and enjoys answering plant related questions. West Seattle nursery has really earned a lousy reputation for customer service and unfortunately it all stems from the owner who would rather eat poo than actually make eye contact and smile at a customer. We always get our Christmas trees here. Very good selection, and the trees are in top shape. Plus, they deliver if needed -- very helpful. I have been coming here for a few yearss now and I have to say that they have really stepped up their game in the past year. I didn't enjoy coming here before since I thought the people were rude. But now they have hired a ton of new people who are super friendly and helpful! I love their indoor selection of plants and pots. They have a great selection of plants. They have very interesting varieties of camellias, hydrangeas, Japanese maples, roses, and trees. Its obviously going to be more expensive than a big box garden store, but you're paying for a small business that really specializes in gardening! I love their repotting events too! read more

I had the best experience shopping for a houseplant and a stand today. Chelsea was very knowledgeable, patient and couldn't recommend this place enough! Showed her a corner of our dining room that I wanted to fill. And explained I wanted a low maintenance plant. Not sure why I go back. The plants and merchandise are nice but the service is poor. Almost every time I go in, I feel like I need to apologize for shopping there. The women behind the counter are snooty and rude, and rarely helpful. You might occasionally find someone wandering around the plants that is nice and helpful, but the moment you go inside to pay it is a very different story. I need to make a better mental note that they no longer deserve my patronage. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. Never in my life have I had a more demoralizing experience at an establishment. I was inside for nearly an hour and not once did anyone ask if I needed anything. I walked around for at least 15 minutes while trying to balance plants in my hand and not once did anyone ask if I needed help, or let me know that there were boxes to put my plants in while I stopped. Only after I walked up to the counter and asked if there was a place I could put my plants was I given a box but the young lady at the front counter didnt even look up at me. The minute my partner walked in we both could tell they were uncomfortable having a POC in their shop. They blatantly ignored him, even when he repeatedly said"Excuse Me" to the 3 employees right in front of him. They were more interested in talking about their rum preferences to each other than acknowledging him. It was pretty obvious that the white couples who walked in were given assistance withing minutes. From the other 1 star reviews this demoralizing behavior is definitely a reoccurance. Buyers beware, best spend your money and time at a nursery who's employees will actually treat you with respect. Might I suggest City Peoples Garden Store, or even Houseplants Galore in Everett. The 30 minute drive all the way to Everett is a better use of your time than it being wasted here. read more

WARNING: DON'T ASK THEM THE WRONG QUESTION. I just had one of the worst customer service experiences of my life at the West Seattle Nursery. I will never go there again, but want to share this story with others so you can avoid a similar experience. I went to purchase a few items for starting my vegetable seeds indoors. There were 4 staff on-site. After I couldn't find a clear sign or section for seed-starting pots, I asked the man stocking the shelves if they carried peat-pots or other types of seedling pots. Immediately this man went into a hostile tone and started lecturing me on the environmentally inferior and poor quality of those pots. Instead he pointed to some other types of pots near where we were standing. I took a quick look at the pots. The sign was very poorly written and I couldn't make out the cost. I also wondered if they would break down enough in the soil (I am starting peppers, tomatoes and pumpkins that need to be planted in their pots to avoid root-shock). Despite this employees hostile attitude, I was willing to try again. I asked how much they were. He glared at me and said, "Why don't you try looking at the sign." As I tried to explain the lack of clarity, he turned his back on me and walked out. Nerves rattled, I quickly gathered what I needed for today and went to the register. I am a big supporter of local business, but I would rather travel a long distance for better selection and service. Or for a few simple things, True Value Hardware in the Junction is better. At least they don't try to intimidate their customers. The irony? The soil starter West Seattle Nursery sold me is primarily made of peat moss. Go figure. read more

Just wasted about an hour of my weekend picking out a pot and some herbs for a container garden...waited in the long line with my husband holding the heavy pot. When we finally had our turn in line, the clerk discovered there was no price inside. Her response, "you'll have to come back on Wednesday, Marsha is who prices our pots". WT?? Checkout their classes! I've been to the West Seattle Nursery several times to purchase pots, plants, decor and even plant food. However, last weekend I took class for $30 and learned to make a living sculpture (aka a fern ball or decor for your home). It was a great way to spend a rainy sunday afternoon and come home with a little present! They have a variety of classes each weekend, just check their website for more details. The class takes place either outside or inside their shop. Ours was inside, which was a little cozy. The instructor for my class was ok, he could have been a bit more instructional, but allowed you to be creative and figure things out by yourself. It wasn't complicated project, so one could appreciate the creative freedom. read more

First time visiting this weekend and I am in love! They had a wide variety of indoor and outdoor plants at fairly comparable prices to other shops. Pots/planters were on the pricey side, but that's to be expected (Check out places like ross/marshals for sweet deals on medium/small pots!). We mostly looked at their indoor varieties, which they restock weekly, and purchased roughly $100 worth. So many ferns! Great spot to find both hardy, common varieties as well as fun exotics. I had two people help me at West Seattle Nursery, and although they were short staffed and pressed for time, they gave me all the advice and time I could have asked for. I know nothing about plants and the employees steered me in the right direction for soil and pots and repotted my plants for me. All this while dealing with long lines and also having to make coffee?! The employees here are amazing and I will come back here again ASAP for the plants I meant to buy but couldn't carry in my first car load. read more

Another terrible customer service experience and I am officially going to take my business elsewhere from now on. I have been going to WS Nursery for a few years because it's conveniently located, but the service is very hit or miss. Yesterday, I stopped in to look at some vegetable starts and after being waved over in the general direction of the veggies, I asked an employee to help me locate some Tuscan kale. She said, "They have signs on them." Thanks, very helpful. Then, on my way out, I attempted to ask another employee behind the counter a question, and he completely ignored me for a solid minute to finish whatever he was doing before glancing up at me. At the very least, he could say - "I'll be with you in a moment" rather than refusing to look at me after I said, "Hi, can I ask you a question?" Never again, West Seattle Nursery. I'll drive out of West Seattle to spend my money at a business that appreciates its customers. read more

I don't want to write this review. It's hard to say something negative about a place you have wanted to visit and wanted to do business with. Well I finally decided to take the leap: it was time to become an amateur green thumb. A balcony gardener. I went there knowing this should be the place to go. Friends have given rave reviews. The selection is fantastic. So much that it is utterly daunting to your first time gardener. I went in with a deer in the headlight gaze I'm sure. Perhaps that was the issue. I might as well have had "project" tattooed on my forehead. Or noob. Utter noob. My wanderings took me through perennials and conifers and shrubs. The odd chicken. They roam free which is endearing. But no sign of help. None. No eyes. No helpful eyes. Just people angled downward like the shy person at a house party trying to determine the species of ficus in the corner. A soul carries a hydrangea past me without so much as eye contact. I decided to go inside using the logic of inside plants might be inside. Inside was a neatly appointed maze and again the wall of photosynthesis. I was noob. Hear noob roar in growing frustration. What did well in what light in what pot type with what soil drainage? Hahahah! Guess, Noob! I never really received any help. No helpful body to answer questions or hold my dazed little hand. Just one clerk who was punching at a cash register like the answers to life were in there. I got a flippant few gestures of this this and this. Never allowed any follow up like the ever so vital "Will my cats want to eat and/or become deceased with this?" I finally gave up. Maybe gardening isn't for me. Maybe it wasn't their day. Does the West Seattle Nursery have great selection? In spades. But you had better know want you are looking for and where to find it. Turns out it really is a jungle out there. read more

I love this nursery! They have a little bit of everything! They let you take your time walking around and taking everything in on your own, but are there to answer any questions you may have. I bought dahlias there for my condo and they potted them for me! I love their outdoor sculptures/figurines and water features and their selection of maples! They may not have been, but they LOOK as though they were handpicked for some special quality in each individual tree. I think that could be said about most of their plants and pots etc. This nursery is just one more thing I love about living in west Seattle. read more
