Every-time I visit the West Seattle Nursery it is confirmed - they are the best! I can walk in and buy a tiny house plant in a puny planter and receive the same great service that I receive when I come in the spring with a full list of starters and seeds that I need. Seriously, I went in today and spent under $7. I bought the tiniest houseplant and a little pot that was on clearance. Not only was it a steal - but the woman working offered to pot it for me. When I told her it was a gift and that it would be greatly appreciated she offered to "gift it up" for me - which she did! A few weeks ago I brought a plant in that was close to death and another woman took about 20 minutes patiently explaining to me the problem and what I needed to do. Although it was all my fault in the care - she didn't make me feel stupid (although I really did almost kill the poor thing). She then proceeded to down sell me on a treatment that I was purchasing. She told me to just by the much smaller, cheaper bottle. Again - every time I come in this store they reaffirm what a quality, local, independent business should be. Sometimes they are very busy (which is great for them!) so it can be a little harder to get advise. But, they are busy! And when they get to you they give you the help you need, and with a smile. FREE DELIVERY to anywhere in west seattle is such a perk. this place left me inspired and confused about all that i want to learn about gardening and plants. luckily, they have a helpful staff who were able to help me with all of my novice questions. and for my first buy, i am happy to have purchased a nice sized japanese maple tree. i was very happy to find a selection of japanese plants that remind me of home and where i can't find at some big chain store. also a tip i learned from running around: they have these dolly carts that you can haul around and load what you want. then you go into the store to make your purchase. inside the store is where you'll find more indoor plants, books, and tools. that being said, i just kept finding something new every corner i made. read more

I love this nursery! They have a little bit of everything! They let you take your time walking around and taking everything in on your own, but are there to answer any questions you may have. I bought dahlias there for my condo and they potted them for me! I love their outdoor sculptures/figurines and water features and their selection of maples! They may not have been, but they LOOK as though they were handpicked for some special quality in each individual tree. I think that could be said about most of their plants and pots etc. This nursery is just one more thing I love about living in west Seattle. read more

So that was awesome. After reading the "Marsha" review, I was a bit wary. Goodness knows our wonderful West Seattle features, among its charms, plenty of quaint and quirky businesses with backward--even downright insane--customer service approaches. But WS Nursery came through! I walked in on a busy Sunday, quickly located an employee and let her know I'm a complete beginner looking to plant an herb garden, like, today. She was unfazed and walked me through the entire process. Helped me select herbs. Told me which potting mix to get with it. I chose a huge cedar planter which she herself loaded into my car while I was waiting in line to pay. I asked lots of beginner-type questions and got helpful answers. The whole experience was quick and painless, even fun. I drove home, positioned my planter on my deck, poured the 2 cubic bag of soil into it, and transplanted my 7 starts. I walked in and said "I need plants but I will not take care of them. What's your hardiest NW variety?" and he walked me through the place and picked out three. I think it was around $70. I can't recall when I last watered them and there isn't a yellow leaf to be seen. They also sold me water lilies once for an indoor plant garden I was working on, but the pot was too porous and started molding on the outside. Not their fault though. read more

Went in with my sleeping baby and the way people looked at me you would've thought I was boarding an international flight. On top of that at checkout the staff member referred to my child as "it" lol. Cool looking store but WOW their customer service stinks. They're close, have a great selection, and prices are usually pretty good (except maybe the pottery which is phenomenal, however, they do have sales fairly regularly on the mismatched stuff). What I really like is their willingness to help and their knowledge of the plants they work with.. if they don't know a plant, they'll look it up. Wonderful neighborhood nursery! I walk through this nursery regularly, and love the selection & outdoor layout, with roaming chickens as a special bonus! I wanted 3 pots planted and asked for assistance from the staff. Mary was identified as the expert in pots and what an EXPERT she is! Mary was very helpful in assisting me in selecting plants for all 3 pots and created grouping with wonderful size, color and texture. She took time to make sure the 3 pots worked well together and complimented each other. As an added service, I opted to have Mary plant the pots for me, which is very convenient . A great selection at reasonable prices. Staff is helpful, but seems a bit put-out when customers ask lots of questions. Expect some sighing and trudging, so I could not consider them outright friendly, but they do know what they are talking about. Clearance items on the side are priced to move, and it may make sense to wait a bit till the plant you have your eye on is nearly out of season. Parking is right next to store, and it is easy to drive by. May return. read more

6-28-19: Received call two days later from Ingrid, informing me she'd been given my phone message. I told her what I was looking for, she informed me she had someone down in CA and would have them look for the cactus size I was wanting. I received call on 6-27-19 informing me they had two cactus available. I informed them I would come in the next day and choose between the two. I picked up the cactus on 6-28-19 and am happy with the outcome. I would go back again, as they have cool plants. West Seattle Nursery is a heavenly gem. My guy and I stopped by on Saturday and spent well more than we had planned, but of course received high quality pots and plants. I was looking for some very specific varieties of tomato plants and didn't have any luck at the WS farmers market and PCC. In the past, I've avoided WS Nursery because of the negative reviews. (Although, the most recent reviews are mostly positive, so perhaps they've changed.) It's getting late in the season for planting tomatoes, so I was getting a little anxious. I decided to give them a try. I'm glad I did. I'd barely stepped into the outside plant area when a woman saw me looking around and asked if she could help. She checked on me a couple times after that and brought me a box to hold my plants. She also walked me to the basil plants, which were in a protected location practically on the opposite end from where the tomatoes were. The place is so filled with plants, it would have taken me forever to find them on my own. And I was there on Memorial Day, so it was pretty busy. Back to the tomato plants: They had a lot of variety, a surprising amount of inventory, and they were very reasonably priced. I found 2 of the top 3 varieties I was hoping to find. I also decided to replace the little Sungold start I purchased at the farmers market with a bigger, healthier-looking one in a larger pot. I didn't run into any problems at checkout inside. There was no line (surprising considering how many people were there), and the cashier was friendly. Next year, this will be the first place I'll go for my plant starts. I'll be sure to go on a (non-holiday) weekday, though. They do have a parking lot, but it's not very big, and a little difficult to turn around in if all spots are taken. I was lucky that someone was leaving, and when I left, someone was stalking my space. If you go on a weekend, be prepared to park on the street. read more

I have been a patron of West Seattle Garden Nursery for many years and have always had favorable experiences. Just last week, I had the good fortune to meet their perennial buyer, Scott Tuzzolino, who gave me tremendous insight into how I can make my backyard garden more attractive . I am far from knowledgeable in this arena and he could not have been more patient in understanding my challenges, providing options and deciphering what I was responding well to. He seemed to ask all the right questions regarding exposure, dimensions, soil conditions etc... so that by the time that my cart was full of new acquisitions , I felt that it was money well spent and that I actually had a design in place. Everything is now planted and for the first time ...it looks fabulous!!!!!! I am not sure where they found this treasure of a garden aficionado, but if you want to be inspired, this is your man. read more

I moved to the Georgetown area last year and was so pleased to find this nursery. In my opinion it is the best plant nursery in Seattle. The staff is so well informed and are happy to walk me around while I ask endless questions. I always feel like I am taking a mini-class when I go in. Other pluses are, - Only $20 for delivery to my neighborhood. (I believe it is free if you are in West Seattle). - Bulb refunds if nothing grows. (I have never had to return anything, but it's nice to know). - Plants are always healthy. - Prices are reasonable for a city nursery. All it all, such a pleasure to visit. Received a gift certificate as a move-in gift and decided that today was the day I would head up there and get some stuff for the yard. Great selection of plants, very well organized and well taken care of. An amazing amount of pots, but lacking in other hardware like composting equipment and the like. Was a bit underwhelmed by the gardening tools available. I have visited West Seattle nursery often and have made small purchases in the past. I would say its hard to say who is working there or who is not since the workers looks like customers. I recommend they should let their staff wear a name tag or a West Seattle nursery t-shirt. Almost every single time, I have been asked if I needed help if they see me looking all lost. They have a great selection of plants, trees, flowers and shrubs and vegetable seedlings. They are bit on the pricey side. three plants cost me $75. All in all I have good positive things to say about this place. read more

Such a lovely new building, and I love the fact that we can bike to it and pick up some lovely plants. The kids love looking for the chickens, and looking at all the wonderful water fountains. And I have often recommended this nursery. However my experiences there has been mixed. The plants are nice, the atmosphere is beautiful, the selection is great for the space, and the prices are competitive. However, I have always found their customer service lacking, and the staff to be less interested in helping customers than looking good and chatting with one another. This seems so odd to me, and I mentioned it to someone at another store who said they also had similar experiences. Sad. I suppose we'll still stop there occasionally but it will not be our first choice. read more

Have you ever heard of a business that doesn't take phone calls ? West Seattle nursery has only a recording telling you to come in ... so since I'm disabled , I sent my gardener down and they were so rude , they acted like she wasn't even worth their time. She went to McLendens, got everything we needed and they lost a customer .. No they lost a lot more than that as my gardener has a very busy, well respected company. They are nowhere near as good as THEY think they are. One more thing, the two $ signs ... More like 3. I saved @ $70 dollars by buying at Mclendens on this one purchase. read more

Love this place! They offer a nice selection of both indoor and outdoor plants, and ever since they expanded the nursery they now carry an even larger variety of indoor plants (and cool garden decor/planters, ect) than ever before. The prices are fair, as the plants are healthy and well taken care of. I've noticed that the plants I purchase here are healthier and adapt much better than the ones I've purchased at other big home improvement stores, so to me it is well worth the couple extra dollars they might charge for a plant. As far as customer service goes, I have to disagree with other reviews, as I find it to be top-notch. There is maybe one employee in particular I frequently see at the counter who seems to very much detest any form of small talk or questions, but for the most part, the staff is really wonderful and have a real passion for botany. I remember one time I came into the nursery looking for a particular plant, and I was informed that it wasn't in stock. The awesome woman helping me looked all over and couldn't find it, so she told me she would order it for me. I got in my car and drove off, about to turn onto California, and just then I see her running through the parking lot to my car with the plant in hand, so happy to tell me she had found it for me! Seriously, wow. If that isn't brilliant customer service, I honestly don't know what is. read more

We have been coming to this nursery for years but today was probably our last time. We were not there long when we sensed something had changed. Plants were not that great looking, prices were higher and staff was rude. A person in charge or maybe management was telling workers what to do in a rude way and then while my husband was looking at a plant she rudely asked him to move instead of going around him. No one asked if we needed help as in the past. This was a sad experience after having gone here for years and buying most of our garden plants. I decided to check and see if indeed something changed here and see from reviews that it has and we were not the only ones feeling like this place has gone down hill. If I owned a business and saw this many negative comments I would start to change things immediately. If this continues this business will not survive as there are plenty of other places to purchase nursery items! So sad to see this nursery change for the worse. read more

Huge selection of air plants, succulents and house plants. Also many ideas for decor that would look amazing in the house. Customer service was also on point. Jen helped us out at the register and we had purchased a little pot and plant. She offered to pot it for us and even added some rocks to the top when we mentioned soil gnats were a little problem for us in the past. The location is super cool and I've been here a few times. The first time the staff was standoffish but fine. My most recent time, one of the staff members spoke to me and my friends in a way I've never heard a person speak to a paying customer before. She was eavesdropping on our conversation and then reacting defensively, when we were simply commenting on our personal plant preferences and opinions (as people who own 50+ plants). Her behavior alone makes me want to never come here again, which is unfortunate because I love house plants. read more

So, I contacted the BBB, and went through their program.... the resolution...... West Seattle Nursery, removed their half off a new more expensive tree, and offered me a full refund only on the condition that I completely remove the complaint on the BBB and also remove my complaint on Yelp. They said I would only receive an almost never given refund only if I remove my complaints against them. Well since I believe that the situation that actually did happen deserves to be disclosed. That the terrible response from me calling and explaining the situation candidly and being told I qualify for a refund, then bringing in the tree and being told I did not. As well as being insulted by having been told what I did was equal to running over my tree with my car. To the only receiving a refund if I remove my complaint absolutely and completely from all sources. I have declined any refund. In exchange I keep my post here on Yelp and on the BBB. Use it at your own discretion. Go to this business if you will, I will never go there again. I will continue to tell every gardener I know to never go there. When I have gone there they are rude, to the point of complaining about other employees to you. This is only when you can get their attention, as they tend to ignore you when you are there. The prices are beyond anything you will find at any other location in the area, and the quality of the plants are suspect in my opinion. I have been sold Roses there that had black spot to the point of almost dieing and was not told ( I learned afterwards what black spot was, I did not know at the time or would probably have not bought the diseased roses. I understand that it was cutting it close but when I explained that was all I wanted and that I would be quick, the woman wheeling in the plant cart said we are open 11 hours a day (implying I should come back some other time). Service as always was great. I got there a little early for my appointment and they were pretty strict about my appointment time so I had to wait about 15 minutes. They only let in about 8 people at a time. I had a lot of items to buy for myself and another person and needed some help picking the right plant for a large pot. A nice gentleman had lots of great suggestions and I found some nice options quickly. While checking out a maskless (of course) woman of years next in line, standing less than 6 feet from me, was glaring at me and asked if I had a 10 o'clock appointment and I said yes. She said you are over your time. It was 10:33. I was three minutes over my buying time. I told her that I don't think the management would mind since I was spending over $100 for the items I had purchased. She had about 4, or 5 small plants herself. She said it didn't matter and continued to glare at me. I felt sorry for her and deeply hope her day/life gets better for her and I damn sure hope she starts wearing a mask to protect the people she glares at in the future. read more
