West Side Animal Clinic was highly recommended by the most conscientious dog owner I know. Dr. Johnson and her staff are amazing! Dr. Johnson and her staff took their time introducing themselves. Making visits less tramatic for the dogs. I never feel we are being rushed out of the of the office. The communincation has always been great. I drive 45 minutes to get to West Side Animal Clinc and it is well worth the drive for the care recieved. The type of care and attention is rare these days. We have been going to Dr. Johnson for 20 years. The receptionist is a horrible person and is completely disrespectful. This was the second instance we have been talked to by this receptionist in an uninformed and uneducated way. I do not know why Dr. Johnson lets her employees talk to people with such ignorance. Worst service I've ever experienced. The receptionist lacks respect customers. She has been doing this for years and keeps scaring off more customers. It is sad that she is treating people like this. I would not even give any rating for this place. The worst. Have been going there for 8 years. When it was time to put my baby down, was told by two different staff that they were to busy, One asked how important is it and the other at first told me as usual they were booked and then said she would try to fit me in in a short period. Very thankful for Dr J & her staff. I have a crazy work schedule & they are always able to be flexible with appointment times. I show up right at the beginning of drop off time & have never had trouble getting ahold of them on the phone to come outside to pick up my dog. I foster so I have had many dogs seen by Dr J & her staff. Every single one they get to know & they genuinely care about each dog that I foster. My current foster is anxious about new people & her staff always takes the extra time to make sure she is calm & comfortable. Dr J & her staff are wonderful. read more

I have been going to another vet clinic in the area for years. But, when I recently adopted a cat, my vet disappointed me by giving up on him. But Dr Johnson and her staff did not give up on Rue and today he his loud, happy and in my face! June 8th, 2022 at West Side Animal Clinic in St. Louis, MO WORST VISIT EVER!!!! Our friends were going on a family vacation to Colorado The 2nd week of June and asked us to watch their 12 year old dog Maddy. No problem! Maddy is a wonderful, sweet dog. When Maddy was dropped off at our house, her Mom said she hadn't been opening her mouth much lately and the vets office didn't seem concerned about it when she had called. They told her to bring her in if it got worse. After having Maddy for 1.5 days, I noticed she was getting worse and it was concerning to me. She was still eating soft food and drinking little bits of water, but I wanted her to go to the vet asap. The owners called their vet Dr. Johnson at West Side and they were able to get Maddy in on Wednesday, June 8th. I dropped Maddy off at 745 in the morning. In the meantime, I was speaking with my friend/ vet about Maddy's condition, and without examining her, she thought it could be Masticatory muscle myositis. Dr. Kerckhoff at Webster Groves Animal Hopsital had treated other dogs with this condition using steroids. When Dr. Johnson at West Side called me in the afternoon, she said they talked to the vet specialist and they wanted Maddy transferred and to be kept overnight where they would put her under anesthesia the next day and pry her mouth open. I said, let me talk with the owners because I can't make that kind of decision for them. After discussing with the owners, we decided to take her to Webster Groves Animal Hospital where Dr. Kerckhoff works and try the more conservative route first, before putting a 12 year old dog under general anesthesia. I went to West Side Animal Clinic to pick Maddy up that afternoon where I was treated the worst I have ever been treated in my life. I walked in and said I am here to pick up Maddy. Could I have any records that you have for today and the xrays so I can take them with me? The vet, Dr Johnson, popped her head out and said "I haven't had time to get the paperwork done yet. Are you taking her to the vet specialist now?." I said, "no, we decided to take her to Webster to get a second opinion." Dr. Johnson then said, they can't give her steroids, because I gave her a nonsteroidal injection today." They were authorized to get bloodwork and Xrays; But they gave her the injection and a muscle relaxer. As I was in the lobby, I heard a woman yelling down the hall at me. " COME GET YOUR DOG, I AM NOT HELPING YOU TO THE CAR WITH HER." I was taken back by this and so confused what the issue was. "COME GET YOUR DOG, HERE'S THE LEASH, TAKE HER AND GO." I walked down the hall and said "I'm sorry I don't understand what the problem is here." She then said "you neglected your dog, that's the problem." I explained, its not my dog and she said "clearly!". I said I am trying to help her and she said well you brought her in 5 days too late. I asked the vet tech what her name was and she said "its none of your damn business". I tried to get Maddy up, but she's a 93lb dog and was dead weight and none of them would help me. I walked back down the hall and called the owners to explain to them how poorly I was being treated. They called the vet office and they would not let them speak to Dr Johnson telling them she was busy. I was the only one in the office, so she was NOT BUSY. The incredibly rude vet tech yelled down the hall at me again to come get the dog. By this point I was in tears, because I just wanted to help the dog and this treatment was uncalled for. The vet tech then said to me "oh don't start crying now, nobody feels sorry for you." I turned and looked at her and said "you are an awful person." She said back to me..."takes one to know one". Very mature. Dr. Johnson sat there and listened to this entire encounter and did NOTHING to stop her staff from treating me that way. I was completely in shock. Dr. Johnson finally helped me get Maddy in my car and told me good luck. As I was leaving, the vet tech walked outside and flipped me off and said "F*** You!" I snapped her photo and left. Long story short....Maddy has recovered completely fine (without a surgery) with the help of Dr. Hanon and Dr. Keckhoff and the wonderful staff at Webster Groves Animal Hospital. She comes over to see me and runs through the yard and loves her snuggles! She's moving around better than I have seen her in a long time! I beg you to NOT take your pets to this animal clinic unless you want to get treated poorly. I'm still in shock of how you can talk to a person like that and get away with it. read more

I love Dr. Johnson and her staff. She is kind, compassionate, and VERY good! The staff is awesome as well. It is a small family practice, and the level of care is truly outstanding. My pure bred Shih Tzu's receive excellent preventative care. We had an emergency a couple of months ago with my Mom's dog who was visiting from CA. A random/freak spinal injury rendered the dog paralyzed in the hind quarters and Dr. Johnson was incredible. Without her quick and KNOWLEDGEABLE assessment and treatment, there is no question that Buddy would not have recovered and would not be walking today. This vet is fantastic! I have been bringing my dogs to her for eight plus years and I also know her staff on a personal and professional level and let me say, they are top notch! Even during hard and trying times, they do their best to accommodate everyone, regardless of who you are, and rarely are they given credit for how busy and stressful things can be. I worry a lot and consider myself a helicopter pet mom and never has Dr. Johnson ever made me feel bad, she handles my personality well. She is open minded and accommodates various perspectives. I've been taken my dog, Chrissy to this clinic for a few months. Two weeks ago, I sent Debbie Johnson an email with pictures of Chrissy's back and I heard nothing. The past Sunday I sent another email with a video of Chrissy's back and I called the next day. I called multiple times to make sure she sees my email because Chrissy's back I can tell was inflamed and irritating. I finally was told to bring Chrissy between 7:30 a.m-8:30 a.m. The next day, my significant other brought her as he has always done since we have been coming to Westside Animal Clinic. When he got there my significant other stated that he called multiple times, no one answered and so he went to the door and rung the doorbell a few times. He stated that Penny came to the door, yelled at him to get in his car, they're not opened (even though he was thereby 7:30), and slammed the door in his face. I called and Penny answered. I spoke to Penny in a calm tone because I was not there so I don't know what happened but I just wanted to make sure that there wasn't something that I was missing when I called the day before and was told that Chrissy could come between those times. Penny immediately got offended when I spoke with her and told me that my significant other was rude by ringing the doorbell and the next time we would be fired because they don't tolerate that. At this point, I am getting upset because first off I am a medical assistant at a pediatric clinic, I deal with parents and their moods all the time but I or anyone in my clinic has ever spoken in the tone that she did and never threatened to fire someone. Once we were going back and forth she told me that we were fired and hung up on me. I called again, I believe I spoke with Cindy and she was very nonchalant about my frustration and told me that there was no manager there, it's just three of them, the doctor, and she wouldn't be in until later. I hung up on her because I was irritated that she could care less what I had to say. I finally spoke with Debbie Johnson that afternoon and she stuck up for what Penny had to say. She told me that she was tired of my significant other, how he treats her staff every time he brings Chrissy, that the only reason she allowed Chrissy to keep coming is that she liked her and me (which she has never met me nor spoken to me until that day, we've only had one interaction over email). When she said that I was baffled because whenever I would call and speak to Heather or any of the other ones they NEVER mentioned my significant other's behavior, they just told me what Debbie had to say and that was it. So I knew she was lying and I knew this had to be a racial thing because I didn't understand where all this was coming from. All in all, I wouldn't recommend anyone to come to this animal clinic. They are all disrespectful including the doctor and don't know how to talk to people. There are some ways you go about talking to people when you have an issue or concern. I am glad that their true colors were shown and I don't have to give them any more of my hard earn money. I wish there was some someway someone could go and teach on how to communicate with their customers and that Debbie's license could be taken away because as a doctor you should no better and hear your customer side and not just your staff. read more

Dr Johnson is awesome!!! We have been going to her for over 8 years now and she is truly amazing with our dogs. We originally went to her as a 2nd opinion when we couldn't figure out what was wrong with our 13 year old Husky for over 4 months. She immediately did an ultrasound and we discovered that our Husky had tumors on her spleen that were bleeding off and on which was why she would eat for a few weeks and then stop eating for a week. After we had to put our Husky down due to the tumors, we adopted a 7 month old yellow lab mix and he was treated by Dr Johnson for his life. Due to unfortunate circumstances, he was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in April 2016 and we had to put him down in March 2017. Dr Johnson and her staff were tremendously loving and compassionate to our lab and to us not only throughout his life but during his illness and final days. Dr Johnson was able to special order his medicine which was great. Dr Johnson is now treating our latest addition to the family....a 9 week old labradoodle and yesterday was his 1st visit to the vet. Dr Johnson and her staff were tremendously knowledgable and proceeded to help educate me on some general information regarding puppies. They are truly fabulous and she is very reasonable on her pricing. read more

I took my seven year old Aussie in for a removal of a tumor on his shoulder. It didnt seem to bother him in the least; he was an active, energetic dog who was playing, jumping, and running the day before his surgery. I picked him up at 3:30 in the afternoon, as I was told. He was stumbling and falling, and I had to carry him to my car. I called Dr Johnson at 5:20 & told her something was very wrong. His tongue was pale, he was panting and distressed, and couldn't seem to get comfortable. She told me that was normal and if he didn't improve, I should bring him in the following morning. I stressed again that I felt something was wrong, but was told to give him pain meds. The office was supposed to close at 6:30 pm. I called at 6:20 to say I was bringing him in, but they were closed. I put him in the car to head to an emergency clinic... he died in my son's arms before I left my driveway. I left a message for Dr. Johnson, but didn't hear from her. My husband went to her office two days later and she refused to refund the cost of the surgery. I lost my beautiful boy, and of course I know she can't bring him back, but her lack of concern is what bothers me most. read more

I've had great experiences with Dr. Johnson. We're able to get our dog and cat in to see her whenever we need. Both her and the staff are friendly and helpful. Dr. Debra Johnson was referred to us. Our MinPin, Mini who is only 5 yrs old has been sick for the past 24 hours with vomiting (10 times), fever and not eating for the past 24 hours. She is drinking water, however, she vomits it up immediately. We took her to see Dr. Johnson and she was great. She examined her and prescribed antibiotics and medication to help her stop vomiting. Mini is very nervous when she has to go to the vet but was relatively calm with Dr. Johnson. When we left the office we felt 100% better that Mini was not going to die and would be OK. Thank you Dr. Johnson for seeing and treating her on short notice....See you again soon. read more

My puppy started having severe skin redness, itching... so we took her to West Side Animal Clinic. They gave her some antihistamine tablets (1 every 12 hours) and said to call if it didn't help. They weren't working and the clinic was closed on Sunday, so I called Kirkwood Animal Hospital. They said that with her size and the pills we had, we should try giving her a pill every 6 hours. It helped a little, but she was still whimpering and itchy, so I called West Side first thing Monday morning to get her in. The receptionist (Tammy) started lecturing me on following the instructions on the label. She said "those instructions are there for a reason...". She just kept lecturing and talking down, so I asked to speak with someone else so I could get some help with my suffering dog. She said the doctor wouldn't be in until 9:30, but was busy all day so it might be a while before I hear from her. I asked if there was anyone else there I could speak with, and she just kept repeating herself. I took my dog to Kirkwood Animal Hospital where they gave her shot for immediate relief, recommended some good shampoo, put her on a different medication (with no side effects), and talked with me about the plan. I still have not heard back from the doctor at West Side. read more
