Fantastic experience with West Valley Arborist! They handled both the tree removal permit and the safe removal of a 60' redwood in a very tight space--all at a very reasonable price. I had a redwood tree in my backyard squeezed between two buildings, causing issues with the sewer line and foundation. The situation was tricky--not only did it require careful planning for removal in a confined space, but also navigating the city's permit process. Out of several quotes I received, Simon's proposal stood out. He recommended using a crane for safety, and his price was very fair. I am very pleased with the professional work of this fine company! We got off to a bumpy start with two weather related cancelations. Yesterday was the big day. A ultraclean red truck and matching chipper arrived exactly on time. A team of 5 gentleman stet up safety cones around the equipment at the curb. The foreman Daniel had me show him the site and get my final input on the project, which involved a neglected 70 foot tall ash tree, and a 30 foot rubber tree. I left for work, and upon my return, I was greeted by the symmetric beauty of those two professionally groomed trees. The surrounding yard was cleaner than when they arrived, with no clue as to the massive operation that had occurred there. Extremely disappointed at this consultation to assess a downed eucalyptus tree in los gatos. I had requested an arborist consultation to inspect the tree and determine the actual condition of the tree to help determine factors contributing to its falling. He told me the general factors that may have contributed to the tree falling and did not see to care much to actually inspect the tree itself in any detail. We had walked down to the tree and in literally less than 3 minutes we walked back to my house and he got into his vehicle and left. No additional observation of the tree in question and stated that a written consultation consultation can be anywhere from $600-$1000. Paid $250 for some small talk, general conversation about eucalyptus trees which is readily available and less than 5 minute on site evaluation of the tree itself. And I had to ask for a least something in writing to document the visit and tree in question. This , I thought, would be customary when a company comes to evaluate or assess something ( this is aside from a more detailed lengthy written summary). I called the office and they did state they would provide something in writing but this is not customary ( he said that also) and it seemed as is if I were demanding more than they felt they should provide. And unfortunately what was provided for $250 was less than the bare minimum and provided no additional information about the tree. And they called the day before for the payment BEFORE the visit. Very, very disappointing and sub par service from the owner and certainly not worth $250. read more

(1) You say: "The trees were in fact excessively pruned / topped some years ago, and have been growth-managed to improve the hillside view for a long time. To be clear, this took place long before we were invited to service these trees." True. Which is why we were concerned about excessive pruning/topping. (2) You say: "Our client requested, the neighbors (who posted the review) agreed and we performed selective pruning of the new growth back to the previous heading cuts/predefined structure (performed by others in the past), to again, enhance the view but within acceptable practices.   Additionally, in further support of the trees' health, we removed some deadwood we encountered ~ only that of completely dead tissue." Untrue. We, the neighbors DID NOT AGREE to haloing the trees. In fact, my husband told you, Simon, that he agreed to have the work done ONLY IF YOU DO NOT HALO THE TREES. We can debate terminology (haloing, topping, whatever) but the fact is that at least four of the trees you cut no longer have any canopy. If you judged that the trees could not be 'growth managed' this time without haloing, you should have said so. You did not. Bottom line: you haloed the trees, removed the canopy, contrary to the agreement. (3) You say: 'It is worth noting that the posted picture only represents 2 of the 11 trees we serviced and is among a hillside full of untouched Coast Live Oaks presenting similarly.' Okey-doke, below is a wider-angle photo of the trees you 'growth-managed.' These were among the ones most grievously haloed. There are no other 'untouched Live Oaks' on the hillside presenting similarly to what you did. (4) You say: "Regardless, we pride ourselves on prioritizing the health of the trees we care for." They said that was the earliest they could come out (had a few other companies come out the same week we called)...but ok. They called a few days or the day before (not exactly sure) to confirm the appt. said we didn't need to be home since the tree was on the street and already tagged by the city. We were home the day and time they were supposed to come out...no one showed or called...no estimate dropped off either. So not sure what happened. read more

I'm writing this review because their customer service is outstanding when things don't go as planned. And that is much harder to come by. Long story short, there was some miscommunication around removing a neighbor's tree and part of our garden bore the brunt of it. West Valley Arborists could very reasonably have left it to be our problem. But they didn't. The entire ordeal wasn't much of an ordeal. Heather was fantastically patient and eminently collaborative. She took every opportunity to hear our concerns and was empathetic to our situation. It always felt like we were working together to solve our problem and never that we were at odds. In a 2020 that has been headache after headache, I am deeply grateful that Heather was the person we got to work with. I would hire West Valley Arborists again in a heartbeat. Specializes in Deceit I asked the owner to write a Arborist's Report on a tree because it had been dropping limbs and I wanted the city to remove the tree. The owner came out to look at the tree and I described the problem. I then hired him to write the report. After charging over three hundred dollars the owner wrote a report saying the tree was fine. Of course, I expected the owner to report is honest professional view. The deceit is that he clearly knew his general conclusion after seeing the tree but refrained from telling me until after I contracted for the report. read more

What a great team Simon and his crew are. I've used their services twice now, once to remove a very wide diameter and old dying tree in my front yard and replant a new one. A big team (all of whom coculd be on with lots of heavy equipment arrived, protected the grass and shrubs, worked safely (even from the cherry picker) and did a fabulous clean up job. Simon provided the most comprehensive information of any arborist (I shopped two others). His knowledge - and as important - honesty, were VERY appreciated. While WVA is a tad on the higher side (compared to other tree trimmers), the old saying, you get what you pay for, definitely applies here. And I'll take WVA's licensed and competent arborists -doing a job right, the first time - any day over cheaper service providers. I had a magnolia that had been severely trimmed by the previous owner of the house. So severely it looked as if it was dying. Rather than continue to hope that it would recover, I decided to find an arborist. I had never used an arborist before and I was really nervous about finding a good one. After reading the reviews here on yelp I decided on WVA. Simon came out and evaluated the tree and confirmed my suspicions. The tree was dying and I had two options. Wait 10-15 years to see if it recovered or replace it. Simon was quite professional and didn't try to push me one way or the other. I really appreciated that. Within 24 hours I had a quote from WVA. I called one other company for a second opinion. Needless to say the experience with them was lackluster, but they told me the same thing, but their quote was a couple hundred higher for the same job and the person that contacted me was far less professional. Making WVA the obvious choice. Fast forward to tree removal/replacement day... Simon and his crew removed the dying tree and replaced it with a beautiful new native oak. I was pleasantly surprised how little, if any, damage there was to the surrounding sod. They also planted a smaller citrus tree in the backyard. Not only did they put it exactly where I requested it, they replaced the weed cloth and mulch around it. They arrived promptly when they said they would and I came home to beautiful new trees. They did a wonderful job on both trees. I waited a few months to post my review to ensure the trees would survive. Both trees are doing quite well after a couple of months. The Lime tree has golf ball sized limes on it already. I can almost taste the future margaritas. read more

I used this service ~ 3 yrs ago for trimming our rather large Magnolia and was very happy with the results. This time around (October 2011) i was much less satisfied. The job quoted and completed did not coincide, in my estimation. While the tree is healthy, I felt better care could have been taken overall. Regardless, I paid the bill in full. To avoid misunderstandings, be very clear with your expectations and what you mutually agree to - with any service provider. This is the second time I have used Simon and his crew. Both times the work was just excellent. I have a large ornamental pear with some fire blight issues that they have cleaned up without stressing the tree. I also have three queen palms and eleven Italian cypress that they cleaned up. I called Simon after using Yelp reviews and ratings to find a Campbell arborist in order to assess the health and any work required on a very large camphor tree in the backyard of my Campbell duplex. He came promptly and gave me his recommendations about the tree's care and a quote for the work which I accepted. Within the hour his office called to schedule the work and Simon provided me complete information on notifying my neighbors and gaining their permission as the work would affect their yards. The work was completed perfectly yesterday and it was a big job. Simon and his team arrived 15 minutes early to assess the work area, greeted me and re-explained the process. Simon came back at the mid point of the job to ensure it's quality, progress and my satisfaction. With a tree off that size, there was a lot of debris, every bit of which was picked up from all 3 affected yards and even my roof/gutters were swept clean. The tree canopy still looks stunning from every angle, yet now light is able to shine through, all dead wood was removed and the tree appears well-balanced.
