I've been boarding pets here since the 1980's. In the past year, it has become increasingly unpleasant and tedious to check in. Today I brought my cat in its carrier, parked my car about 5 yards from the cattery, and asked the young healthy female attendant to please carry my cat in. I'm 80 years old with a bad back. All previous attendants have been happy to do this. This attendant flatly refused, and said I would have to carry the cat carrier into the cattery myself. This was just the last in a series of miscommunications. My paperwork (as always, complete & current) was attached to the carrier, which on previous visits I had been told was OK, and that I could later take it with me when I picked up the cat. This time, she made me go out to the car, detach the paperwork from the carrier, and bring it to her in the office. Then she said since last time I'd left it on the carrier, that would be OK after all, so I went out and re-attached it to the carrier. Her tone throughout was as if the kennel were doing me a great favor by allowing me to board my pet. Over this past year I have boarded dog/cat 3 times. There has been no consistency at the front desk in terms of courtesy. In fact, there has been little courtesy, period. The kennel insists that we do the paper work over and over, getting extra copies for every single visit, but surely this could be made less cumbersome, since the paperwork is often identical to that of the previous visit. The kennel refuses to keep my paperwork, or a duplicate, on file, insisting that I furnish new (identical) copies for every visit. Because I've been loyal to this kennel for literally decades, it takes a lot for me to change kennels. But if attendants cannot carry a cat carrier a few yards for an elderly repeat client, I think the time has come to look elsewhere. This kennel is paranoid about getting the paperwork, and makes it a nightmare for clients. Customer relations seem to be of zero priority. The young attendants the kennel hires have no people skills, and seem to hate their work. I've waited a year for things to improve, but they're just getting worse. Enough is enough. read more

Dog escaped from kennel and they told us we could take him back. went back and a worker broke the lock in front of us said "oh no I broke the lock". Then we proceeded to get a call from the owners saying we can't leave our dog there. We then went to go get his paperwork from (Hayden) and they said they don't have it. Hayden then proceeded to start an argument with my significant other about wether she gave the paperwork to them. Wich she did we only gave one copy and we are very careful with it. I have never taken any pets to a kennel so I was feeling reluctant, the odor when you walk in to the office is overwhelming, it just smells like pet neglect. when I dropped off, I met a young man named Sawyer, he seemed like a sweet kid and answered all of my questions. but when picking up there was no one in the office, I wanted to make sure they hadn't left for the day so I walked to the side door where the kennels are, an area I toured during our drop off. I could hear people talking so I knocked then opened the door. since there were people talking, I called my dog thru the fence just to let her know i was there. Hayden who was on shift treated me extremely poorly, treated me as though I was trespassing. mind you the only employee and 3 other clients were in this same space. he stated I was wondering into places I didn't belong. you would almost think being alone in the office would be more worrisome than being in a space with the employee and other clients. at the end of the day I just hope they treat our pets better than they treat people. read more

We are new to the area and wanted to find a local boarding facility to bring our dogs. We have three dogs ranging from large to small. I liked how the new owner was former military bc we are a military family as well. The owner gave me a tour of the facility before boarding dates. Gave a generous military discount, which we appreciated. We left our three dogs at this facility for a couple nights. Upon drop off he asked me to only first bring out our dog who is has dog aggression and is a pitbull. I wanted to follow him into the boarding area to help our dog get situated but he took the leash from me and jetted off and told me to wait here while I get my other two smaller dogs ready to go inside. I did, he came back out and I proceeded to follow him inside with my other two bc one is bonded with me and wouldn't budge. I can tell the man didn't want Me going back, once back there I see how the dogs have to be lifted into the cement area that has a wooden hinged lid for a cover. Knowing our pitty is older and 85 - 90 lbs I'm wondering to myself how did he put my first dog inside bc he can't jump well. Upon pick up I went back with the owners son to get my three dogs , this time with my husband. We grabbed our two smaller pets first and waited for our larger dog. The son was trying to get our older dog to jump out. He can't, I even told him he's older and can't jump. I asked my husband to help get him out. The owners son insisted on lifting him out. My concern is .... How do they get pets in and out for play time? There has to be a gate so they can walk out. Bc if they jump over this 3 ft maybe 4 ft wall to get out some dogs may scrape their chests or Bellies. We won't be coming back to this facility. After reading the reviews I was concerned about a friend of mine's dog that was boarded there, so went and checked it out myself. I did not find anything wrong with the kennel or the staff, the dog's all looked happy (as they could be being away from their familiar humans ) and the staff was friendly, thorough and eager to show me around. I have been to other kennels and West Wind is well worth the money compared to the other places I have been to. read more

How is this place still in business!??! I am literally horrified that people are still bringing their beloved animals here and they have not been shut down by Animal Control yet. We have always boarded our dogs at this place. The first time (several years ago) our dogs came home with kennel cough, once we figured out what it was, it wasn't so bad. The last time was just a few days ago. We boarded our four dogs for 10 days while we were away in Mexico. Our 10 year old Bull Mastiff requires medication for his hip dysplasia, when we picked him up, his medicine bottle was FULL, which told us, he didn't get any of his medication while we were gone, proof was that he had a hard time walking, and still does. Also, the kennel owners said they were wet from being sprayed down to cool them off during the 100+ degree weather, when we got them in the jeep ,we could tell that they were covered in PEE... the reeked. If you're looking for someone to take care of your pets like you would, while you are away, this is NOT the place. read more

Sadly this business has gone downhill since we used it regularly for the past 20 years. While the staff may be ok to take care of your animals they score VERY low in good customer relations...we'll NOT be going back. The incident: My wife called to reserve three boarding spots and they told us they had up-to-date shot records for 2 of our dogs but needed us to bring the records for the 3rd dog...which we did. When we arrived they couldn't find the shot records for the 2 dogs they had previously told us that they had. My wife brought all the original shot records for all 3 dogs in case they needed to copy them...which they refused to do. We offered to leave the originals instead of copies but they then told us we could not have the originals back when we picked up the dogs...at that point we just took our dogs and left! read more

We gave them a try since their price was cheaper than most. We took our little dog there about 3 or 4 times. The cut wasn't bad, but after I saw how the owner treated my dog, I will never go back. He let our dogs out of their kennels when we came to pick them up. He didn't put them on a leash, just let them run out and then he chased our little dog down and cussed him out saying what an awful dog he was. Our dogs are not bad dogs, but I would have bit him if he was coming after me like that. My mother was bringing her dogs there as well, and they all got kennel cough. She had a huge vet bill thanks to West Wind Kennels. Don't take your pets to this place! read more

This was my first visit to the groomer here at West Wind. I was unsure if they understood how I wanted my dogs trimmed. But when I picked them up they were gorgeous. The groomers name is Rider. He does not look like your typical dog groomer. But he really knows his stuff. This was the best haircut my little Poms have ever had. I will most definitely be back. Pictures were taken a week after their spa day. Hard to get them to pose. Thank you Rider!!! read more

Brought my dog here for boarding, they kept him in their house and fed him table scraps instead of in the kennels, which a part of my is thankful for. But, not the part that had to re train my senior boy. They nipped part of his nipples and age spots, then blamed it on us over and over again, claiming abuse. They never cleaned out his anal glands when they'd give him a haircut, even after we'd pay extra, and for an old dog, that's really important. When he got old, and got non cancerous tumors, (even had a note from the vet stating what it was) they threatened to call and report us for abuse unless the tumors went away. I highly dont recommend taking senior dogs there, especially ones that have a history of being abused. read more

I recently used Westwind to watch my kitty white I went away for work a few days. The staff was very nice. My kitty loved the screened outside area. Although I know my kitty didn't like being separated from his mommy he was well cared for, safe and people contact while I was away. Terrible kennel, did not give my dog her medication that I provided, owner did not seem concerned, told me he believed my dog doesn't even need medication despite not being a veterinarian, and that I should not bring her back. I boarded my dog with them between August 14 2022-August 16th 2022. They failed to provide adequate care and endangered the life/safety of my animal by failing to provide her supplied medication as they were instructed to do, and agreed to do. Failing to provide medication obviously endangered my dog and could have cost her life. My fear is that the kennel is not providing adequate care for other dogs, as not only did a look into their yelp reviews reveal other owner's dogs not getting medication, but sometimes food as well. When I contacted them about it they told me, "not to bring her back". "Her" being my dog. read more

I am very disappointed in the way my dogs were taken care of. One of them was okay, just scared The other one had been injured and nothing was said about it . We didn't realize he had been injured till we got home when I took him out of his crate and was going to let him run a little into the house. It was then I noticed he had a bad limp on his hind leg. He could barely put any weight on it and had to hold it up. Nothing at all was said to us when we picked him up that he may of had an injury. I am very disappointed in them and will not use them again. I can't trust them to take good care of my dogs. read more

We were recommended West Wind Kennels by a reputable dog breeder who keeps his own kennel. This is our second time using them. Each stay was longer than a week, so I think that's a fair sampling of their services. Our family dog came home happy, well-fed, safe and sound; shiny and fluffy from a grooming. The prices for grooming and boarding are excellent, and they do a good job. The employees and owners are super-friendly and knowledgeable. We have no complaints! We will use them again. read more

Very clean and organized. The kennel system that they have the dogs in is a little intimidating at first since it's not the normal put'em in a cage and close the door. However, after checking it out, it makes sense! The dogs don't see all the foot traffic come in from the owners or people picking up/dropping off and I think that keeps everyone from getting overexcited. A friend of mine has been using them for years and recommended it to us. The owners seemed like no-nonsense kind of people and I can appreciate that in people that take care of multiple dogs every day. Also, it was extremely inexpensive compared to other kennels in town. Not sure about anyone else, but when my boss got her dog back, she was in tears. They were told the dog was blind and nearly deaf. When she picked him up, they acted as if they hadn't been told. The dog could barely walk. Admittedly he is old , but has been doing better since she brought him home. Not sure if he got his meds or not. She asked where his bedding was. They did not want to give it to her. No wonder. It was soaked in urine and covered in crap. She had told them she would pay for extra bathing and grooming to keep him more comfortable. It appears it was never done. He is a sweet old dog who spent his life as a service dog and deserves better treatment. If they were not willing to give extra care to an older valued pet, they should have said so before agreeing to board him. read more

Will NEVER take our dogs here ever again! We took our dogs to get their nails trimmed and the groomer was physically and verbally abusive towards our dogs. We witnessed the groomer yelling at our dogs and slapping them on their backs! There was nothing the owners could say or do for this incident. When we took them home, we checked their nails and it wasn't even trimmed! Paid for a service that was never done! We reported them to BBB and ASPCA! read more

I have been going back and fourth whether to post this review, but I think others need to know. I took my two dogs to West Wind Kennels in late January 2018. When we first got there something did not feel right. I brought in my dog's updated vaccination lists as well as contact information for their vet just in case something went wrong. However they said that they did not need any of this information. Also their kennels are not normal kennels. They are partially underground holes with a trap door type of thing. Only 1 of their 2 dog beds that I brought could fit in the kennel. It was something I have never seen before. After leaving them there, I immediately regretted it. Later that night I asked my sister-in-law to pick them up the next day because I did not want to keep them there for the full 4 days that I was on vacation. When she went to pick them up the next day, she told me that there was no dog bed in the kennel at all!!! My dogs have never pee'd or chewed on their beds before so I was upset that they took that out and left them on the cold concrete floor all night. Also my Springer pee'd himself as soon as he saw my sister-in-law, which was also abnormal behavior and makes me believe that they never took them outside to go to the bathroom and he was holding it in for so long. At other places that we have left them at, our dogs usually greet whoever picks them up with waggy tails, but this time I was told they seemed lethargic and scared. I will never bring my dogs back to West Wind Kennels. It may seem like a good option since their prices are lower than others in Spokane. But you get what you pay for and I would rather pay more for my dogs to play with other dogs and to know that they are being treated well. read more

i could not write a review 15 years ago about how the owner of west wind kennels treated my dogs. First Ginnie was employed there , she was awesome and still is; I brought my dogs in before work as Ginnie instructed, when I got there I explained to the owner who seemed to agitated I was to drop the dogs off, he grab my dogs by the lease until they were on two legs choking them. I yelled at him he literally threw my dogs in the kennel. I let and cried, call into work told them I was going to be late went back and removed my dogs in tears. Ginnie called me afer someone who witness the abuse ask me to bring them back to her free of charge. She is now in Airway Heights you go Ginnie. My dogs have since past but I still remember how west wind kennel owner treated my dogs as if it happened yesterday. I hate this guy with a passion-good luck if you go to this kennel. We have been taking our dogs ( and cat on the odd occasion ) to West Wind for over 15 months now. They took care of them when we first arrived in Spokane from New Zealand for a prolonged period of time whilst we searched for a house and we have continued to use them based upon the care they have received. They have always been very kind to us and to our pets. Even though we have settled in North Spokane, we still take them all the way across town when we go away because we know they are safe and well care for. Yes, the kennels may not be palatial but knowing they are safe and warm brings us peace of mind whilst we are away no matter how short or long the stay. We certainly recommend them to others. My kitty is a temperamental type, and never been boarded before. After 15 days I found her clean and pretty calm albeit the circumstances of being around other animals in in a cage. The cat area is nice with indoor/outdoor cages connected with a pet door. My kitty's outdoor part was under a blooming lilac bush and looked like a lovely place to loll about. I called twice to check on her during my trip and they went immediately to her quarters and gave me a real time update on what she was doing and how her temperament had been. I had concerns because when she gets overly stressed she has stopped eating. This was not the case, so I'd say that her stay was a success. Her bedding smelled of the cattery, but everything was clean and organized. I would definitely go back. read more

After reading the reviews I wonder if it is under new management. So glad I did not read these first and gave them a chance. My dog came back the CLEANEST he has been in years. I have paid several times for him to get bathed and every member of the house could not believe how pristine he was. From the call to the pick up they were professional. I would use them again and suggest you read some of these reviews. Someone rating for another person, people keeping the dog in the house instead of the kennel... We have never boarded our dogs here, and we never will. We have, however, picked up our friends' two dogs on two different occasions. Both times we were appalled at the conditions that the dogs were kept in. The dogs are basically kept in holes in the ground with trap doors. If you have a dog with any kind of anxiety issues, this place would give him/her nightmares for years to come. Our most recent trip to West Winds was after our friends' wedding near Mt. Rainier. We were traveling back to Spokane on Sunday, and were told by our friends that we could pick up the dogs anytime. So when we pulled into West Winds at 7:30 pm, we thought things would be fine. While I was shifting around things from the backseat to the bed of the pickup, a man rode up on his bicycle. He threw the bike on the ground and demanded to know why we were there, and what we thought we were doing. My wife and I both tried to explain, but he wouldn't hear a word of it and kept yelling that they closed at 6 pm. We explained that we didn't know that, that the owners of the dogs had told us to come whenever we got into town. He screamed that HE was the owner, and we had to clarify again that we were speaking of the owner of the dogs, not the owner of the facility (who is clearly an unhinged man). He decided to give us the dogs anyway, so my wife followed him back to the kennels to help with the dogs. The owner opened up one of the trap doors leading to the holes in the ground, grabbed their terrified shepherd by the neck and threw him at my wife. He did the same with their small chiweenie. Both dogs were shaking uncontrollably. For the next 24 hours, the dogs were anxious messes in our house. The small one was terrified of anyone who came near him, growling and biting at us, and the large one vomited and peed during the night, and had some kind of ear infection. After we got them to calm down, the rest of the week went smoothly. We've watched their dogs a number of times, and neither of them have ever been this distraught or difficult to care for. It was obvious to us that they were traumatized after having stayed at the West Winds for a mere weekend. Never bring your dogs there. read more

Does NOT have a vaccination policy. The runs are all indoors, hard concrete floors. I left my dog with them over a weekend and when I picked him up I found dried out feces stuck in the back corner of his crate. He had NEVER messed in his crate before this, not even as a puppy. I have rescue dogs and I had never left them alone before, but an emergency arose and I had to board my pals. West Wind was great. They really took care of my dogs and I have boarded them about a half dozen times since I started using them four years ago. I called first to check the prices and whoever answered was extremely rude. I ask what hours they were open and when I got there the next day to check it out before I boarded my dog, I joked with my husband "what if they keep the dogs in those weird hatches"..... turns out I was right! They lift up a wooden hatch that leads to a wet cement hole with a fence. When he showed me where the dogs were I felt so sorry for them. It was a dimly lit grey room and I just wanted to free the little fur babies! While their price is amazing, it looked like a jail for dogs. My dogs were in urine and feces soaked blankets when I picked them up. They were absolutely scared to death!!! The Son was the one who was running things and assured me since they had been doing this for 20 some years, my dogs would be just fine. His attitude was completely different when I picked them up. I recently left my older Golden Retriever at West Wind while my husband was in the hospital. I told the owner, Vicki, that I didn't know how long it would be and she was completely fine with that. I called every few days to update them on when I thought I would come an get my dog. Their kennel system is something I have not seen before. They have trap doors leading to the dog's indoor space and outdoor space so it kind of looks like they are in a box. It's a bit off putting if you have never seen that type of set up before but my dog seemed totally happy when I picked him up. He was clean, well fed and calm. Their rates are really low, just $11 per day. Gary, the other owner, was the one I dealt with I picked up my dog. He is definitely a no nonsense kind of guy but he was pleasant enough. The kennel itself is beautiful, clean, well kept and the staff is very friendly. They also do dog grooming at a very reasonable rate. I would not hesitate to leave my dog here again. I'm just glad I had not read the negative reviews before I took my dog there. I don't think you will be disappointed if you trust West Wind with your dog or cat. read more

We have used this kennel for over ten years. The owners are very accommodating the facilities are clean. Each dog has a run as well as a private "house" like area. Snickers is happy as a clam when we pick him up. I highly recommend it! read more

I have been taking my dogs and cats to West Wind for years and have never been disappointed. When we tell our dog she is going to the kennel she gets all excited. When we go to pick up Howard, the indoor outdoor cat, he doesn't want to leave. The animals are all well cared for and the place is always very clean.
