I think about Westcott Bay EVERY DAY. No joke. I've already made plans to come back and make a whole Friday Harbor day trip out of a visit to this wondrous place. If you're into shellfish, this is a must! We came on a Saturday around 2 hours before they closed. It was lively but not too crowded since we were able to score the last picnic table. You'll need a car to get here from the ferry terminal, but we saw a lot of people riding Suzie's mopeds so that would be a fun option! You visit the store first to pay for your oysters and pick up picnic sides and drinks. Everything is reasonably priced and a dozen oysters will only set you back $16!!!! They'll give you a slip for your shellfish order that you bring outside to the bins of fresh shellfish where an employee will help you out, especially if it's your first time. They taught me to pick smaller, flatter oysters since it was my first time shucking. I had a blast picking out my oysters especially knowing that they were picked that morning! The bins have tags with the dates on them, so be sure to check that out in order to pick the freshest oysters! Finally take your bucket of oysters to the picnic table (or home!) and an employee will give you a lesson on how to shuck them. My poor boyfriend doesn't eat oysters, so he was only there to shuck them for me and watch me eat, haha. The oysters tasted amazing, super creamy and just the right amount of briney-ness! It's such a great experience to be able to pick, shuck, and eat your oysters right there! Best meal I had on the island, hands down. The baked oysters are fun and flavorful. Not a gimmick but bordering that line, the real reason we're all hear is for the fresh stuff. We did the farm sampler and it was lovely. A glass of albarinho in hand, a sunny day. It's actually perfect. Here's something that surprised me: the GAZPACHO! I lived in Spain for several years and I go back yearly for work. In this country, we always try to reinvent the wheel and add weird shit. Not Westcott. Their gazpacho is legit, although a little spendy for the portion. Also, I recommend a reservation. It will guarantee you a spot facing the ocean, in a comfortable seat. Will forever sing the praises of this place to all my friends and strangers, which is probably pretty annoying for others. read more

It was ok. I was hoping for more and honestly preferred Hama Hama's grillers and chillers. The fresh oysters were delicious. We tried their various grillers and the oysters where too big and meaty for my taste and the sauces were not great. The charcuterie board was very basic and the meats were not particularly good. Okay so tip number one - if you want to actually eat there in person you'll want to hit up open table at least a week or more in advance - have limited seating and you will very likely be turned away as a walk up. They stress this on the website and i experienced in person on 08/07/20. Luckily I purchased oysters online the night before and picked up my oysters there so my trip to the farm was not a waste. I purchased two dozen oysters - they have three offerings - one for raw, another for raw or grill and chubbies for grilling. This place would be probably very fun to visit post pandemic but alas unless you are eating there, there is not much to do - no shucking demos or anything like that - they are very social distancing conscious so just not any interaction going on. I will say they were super friendly. Sp and I have never had oysters at home and they were helpful with instructions and refrigerating and they have a helpful video on their website on how to shuck. They also sell shucking knives and other swag online or there on the premises. Prices for oysters run $17-18 per dozen. Came home that night and had the oysters The next day - they were in one word amazing - so good - I could have had another dozen easy - no brininess and they were meaty even the petites . I will try grilling next time. They have recipes on website as well. Oysters at home are actually a very affordable way to enjoy the oysters - best part of you can have them shipped to your home in WA for no charge so I'm sure we will take advantage of that - it is a full day to go to San Juan and back - another tip - they are very close to "English Camp" a tourist destination that is a highlight on the island so if you are able to get a reservation piggyback the English Camp with your visit to the Westcott Oyster Farm. read more

Lemon is the key! We preordered a dozen High Beach Sweets and a dozen Olympias. Pickup was easy, just drive up and pull them out of the cooler. They were loose in a bag, no ice, so we were glad we had a chilled cooler even though we weren't traveling far. The oyster shells were nicely cleaned. None were open, and they smelled perfectly fresh. The Olympias were quite a bit of work to shuck, and even the High Beach Sweets were some effort. Olympias are tiny and HBSs are small; a dozen each was barely enough for two people after heavy hors d'oeuvres. Now the important thing: taste. Both varieties were the saltiest oysters I've ever tasted. I am a person who puts salt on everything, but at first I didn't like these, even though they tasted fresh. I couldn't taste any sweetness or umami, just SALT! Adding hot sauce was OK, not great. But then we tried lemon and WOW!! They really opened up and tasted fine. I'm glad we tried the Olympias because you can't get them many places, but honestly the High Beach Sweets tasted just as good (and quite similar really). Next time I would just get the larger, easier to shuck oysters... and remember, LEMON!! Westcott Bay, you should include a lemon with every pickup order. read more

A great hidden away lunch spot! We really enjoyed our meals. We both had grilled oysters and oyster chowder. The chowder was more on the soup side than creamy chowder but it was delicious. GO! You won't regret it. I'm not sure how many places exist where you can dine mere feet away from the where oysters you'll be eating are harvested, but this really is as fresh as it gets. I'd tried raw oysters once before in a restaurant in Seattle and I was not impressed. But sitting on the water at Westcott Bay, enjoying a variety of grilled oysters, I thought I'd give the raw variety another shot. I figured if I didn't like them here, it'd mean I just didn't like oysters. How wrong I was! It's been 4 months since we visited and I'm still constantly searching for oysters every time we go out. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The setting is amazing. It's calm and peaceful, with a farm that supplies the majority of the produce served at the restaurant.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The goat cheese in the beet salad we ordered came from a farm up the road. Service was quick and friendly and we never felt rushed. We weren't sure how much to order (given my past feelings about oysters, my husband's tepid feelings toward seafood in general, and our two young kids' first experience with oysters, so we ordered a little at a time. Stop #5 - A Perfect Summer Day on San Juan Island This was our favorite place on San Juan Island. Beautiful, tranquil setting on Wescott Bay. You can drive in or hike in from English Camp (about 2 miles). They have 3-4 picnic tables each with a beautiful view of the bay. Like the oyster farm on Orcas Island, this is a you pick em, you shuck em operation. They loan you a glove and oyster knife and provide shucking instructions if needed. You can purchase sauces to put on your oyster as well as bread. People who work here are so nice and helpful. If it is not too busy, ask them to show you the nursery where the baby oysters and clams are raised before they go in the bay. On Fridays, you can have them grill the oysters at an additional cost. Their retail operation is only open in the summer from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Shucking oysters takes some practice but isn't terribly difficult. They raise pacific oysters which are medium sized and manilla clams. I found the larger oysters better tasting, unlike like other oysters like kumamotos. The oysters are very good quality with good taste and texture. On par with Orcas Island and Wilapa Bay. If you are new to raw oysters, get the sauce with jalapeños. This is the best all around oyster farm on the west coast as far as eating them at the farm. It is also the best picnic location on the island. Hog Island in NorCal has more varieties of oysters but can't match the location, ambience, service and friendliness of Wescott. Check it out! read more

Reservations a must, because this place is such a beautiful location for enjoying fresh oysters and/or clams, along with other goodies on their concise menu. Beer/cider/wine selection for adult beverages, too. I miss the days of being able to hike over from English Camp on a whim and crack a few shells and slurp a few oysters, but I'm hopeful their popularity will keep this beloved local business thriving for years to come. read more

Food: 4/5 Service: 2/5 Experience: 1/5 MAJOR WASP WARNING! I first tried Westcott Bay's oysters years ago at the weekend farmers market on Friday Harbor. Their grilled oysters were amazing - very delicious and big! So, when my parents planned to visit me in Seattle from across the country last week, I knew I wanted to bring them to Friday Harbor, and Westcott Bay was at the TOP of the list. The issue began as soon as we were seated. There was a small disclaimer posted at every table sharing that due to the pink salmon run, there would be wasps. We immediately noticed 3-4 wasps flying around us and our table, and we hadn't even ordered yet. After my parents shared their concerns, an older lady, who I think was the manager, brought out a cup of sugary lemon juice to help, but it was useless. She suggested NOT getting the nibble board as the wasps are attracted to the sweet fig jam. We went with a dozen oysters to shuck ourselves and some grilled oysters. When our food arrived, our server didn't even bother to ask us if we knew how to shuck oysters, and if we needed a short demo. She was incredibly indifferent and cold. My mom flagged down a young gentleman who did a great job showing us. He was also empathetic about the wasps - probably the only one to acknowledge that it was bad. Believe me when I say we didn't have even 30 seconds of peace while eating because as soon as our food arrived, about 8-9 wasps surrounded our table. They were flying around our food, fingers, mouths, ears, literally everywhere! To the point where I was afraid to open my mouth to eat! They were relentless. It was distressing. My dad shucked the oysters as quickly as possible because our goal was to get out of there ASAP without getting stung. I'm not kidding when I say we scarfed down a dozen raw oysters and 4 grilled oysters in a matter of 5 minutes. I was extremely sad because I was really looking forward to enjoying oysters with my parents. More than the wasps, I was really disappointed with the service, including our server, because most of them showed a total lack of empathy, and made us feel like we were the crazy ones for being scared of the wasps surrounding us. I understand that this is normal for them, but I hope they change it up so that paying patrons have a better experience. Perhaps a canopy or wasp deterrent of some sort. If you have kids, are allergic to wasps, or are generally afraid of wasps, do NOT come here. The oysters are not worth the fear, stress, and anxiety. read more

Went with small group in on a Saturday (only day open in winter) to buy some oysters to bring home for the BBQ. Was greatly surprised by the setup....pick and choose your selection with a nice variety of bivalves then choose to eat them there (raw, BBQ, smoked) or take home. We stood around a campfire and drank beer, visited and cooked oysters for a long time (well past closing)! Met great new people (mostly locals) including the people working the place. I went to Westcott Bay Shellfish last weekend for the forth/ fifth time and it will absolutely be my last... to say disappointed is an understatement. I went with my boyfriend and was very shocked by how rude the staff was with an exception for the two college girls inside. There were many signs with strict rules, the bathroom was broken and there were bees everywhere at which I saw a few people get stung. As we are sitting waiting for our food, we saw a man and his larger dog running down the end of the dock and it appeared this man tried attacking this older gentleman (who looked like my grandpa). I wasn't sure what happen there but I saw a little girl hiding between two women who were visibly scared. I find out later on that the man who ran at the older gentleman was the owner... his name is Eric... talk about a shock. But the most shocking thing of all was when he grabbed his dog by the neck and tossed it into the boat and sped off... I wanted to call animal control and report him but I was just in shock. I will never support a local business that uses physical force on their patrons as well as animal abuse. So upset. Do yourself a favor and don't go!!! read more

Oh my, this place is wonderful! I took my family here for a late lunch on a beautiful Friday afternoon and we all loved it. We tried the toast with cheese and grapes, and it was excellent. My wife and I ordered 18 grilled oysters. The bourbon chipotle flavor was my favorite, but they were all wonderful. And the staff was all extremely courteous and attentive. This place is fantastic if you're an oyster lover. They call it a "working farm" where employees are actively harvesting oysters, clams, and mussels from the shore, with more employees in the shop selling bread, cheese, salami, beer, wine, and other drinks. You choose oysters by the half dozen or dozen, and hand-pick them out on your own from the cold water racks; I prefer the smaller ones but you can buy the giant 10+ year old oysters for $4 each! They will give you a lesson on shucking your first oyster, but after that you are on your own! It's a little daunting at first, but so much fun, and I swear the oysters taste better when you shuck them yourself. And you can't beat the view from the picnic tables set up to eat your fresh catch right there on the waterfront. One of our favorite stops on San Juan Island! read more

Pinch me....I think I'm dreaming. This is the first place I've been to where you pick your oysters at the oyster farm, shuck them yourself, and eat them. How much fresher can you get? What an experience! They tell you how to pick them, and shuck them. To top that, it's so freakin' cheap. It was $16 per dozen. In Portland, these same oysters go for $3-4 each. I saw a lot of people bringing them home in a cooler. There were quite a few people like myself, shucking and sucking down oysters. I was quite surprised that kids were willing to eat them. They have Tabasco sauce and lemon at the picnic tables. You can buy different sauces in the store, along with beer, soda, and water. When you eat such fresh shellfish, you don't need any type of sauce. It's a little outside of Roche Harbor, so you will need a car whether you are staying at Roche or Friday Harbor. read more

We were feeling shellfish after our round of golf and decided to trek up to Westcott bay for some oysters. They did not disappoint. I didn't expect to be able to shuck and eat them right there but they have several picnic tables overlooking the water and will loan you a shucking knife and gladly sell you some lemon or sauces. Several groups were already well into their bivalve binges when we arrived, and it looked like a real nice way to spend part of an afternoon. We took ours to go, dozens and dozens of juicy Pacific oysters, and had them on the half shell and some roasted on the grill. Add white wine and some crusty country bread. Went here with my husband who loves oysters! We originally left our dogs in the car because sometimes one of my rescue dogs whines and barks when seeing new for the first time (she tends to simmer down fairly quickly.) Wescott encouraged us to bring our dogs in and made our entire family feel welcome. Our dogs got lots of pets and some dog cookies too! Friendly staff, great service. I will eat Oysters, though am not an Oyster person in the sense that I don't like them enough for the oyster price point. I had never had a grilled Oyster before and I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious the grilled Oysters were- perfectly cooked and delicate. The three grilled Oyster flavors were amazing! Especially Bourbon Chipotle and Cilantro Siracha! This non Oyster person would happily feast upon those grilled Oysters! I just love this divey raw bar, I mean that as a high compliment! The seafood is great and the Oysters are some of the best in the state!!!!

We loved it here! The staff and food are outstanding! It is a fantastic place to anchor the boat (with their own dingy dock). They had items on the menu that my kiddos enjoyed nibbling on. Our pup enjoyed basking in the sun while my husband and I ate shuck yourself and a sampler (or two). We got a dozen to take back to the boat along with their amazing chipotle butter. This place is beautiful and the food was great, so this review is a reflection of the attitude we received from staff when we showed up. Their website claims tables are on a first come first serve basis. See picture for that statement on their website. However, we were rudely dismissed by a staff member when we showed up and asked about sitting at an open table. She told us everything was reservation only and they were fully booked for the day. We inquired about the bar seating and were told that was reservation only too. I approached the staff member and wanted them to be aware that their website says they're first come first serve, but she basically met me with skepticism about whether the website was legit, even though it was their website. She furthermore did not apologize for that and just continued to be dismissive. Luckily, someone else saw our predicament and invited us to their table and we had a lovely afternoon with them. Of course, the bar seating had at least a dozen open seats the whole 60 minutes we were there.
