Decent sandwiches, wraps, and quesadillas type of restaurant in Lopez Island. This was our first meal after landing from the inter island ferry so it was a late lunch, but I'm glad that it was not busy and everything on the menu was available. We got the Vortilla and smoked salmon quesadilla (spinach herb tortilla). Both of these combined was around $32 so a bit on the pricey end but still acceptable. The Vortilla is a large burrito with cheese and salad, so it is a vegetarian dish, but it was good. I wouldn't go out of my way to order this since it's easily made on your own, but we wanted to try it out nonetheless. The smoked salmon quesadilla was pretty good - I wished they had a bit more cheese but the salmon was quite flavorful and tender. Food takes a while to arrive because they're made to order. In the meanwhile, there's an herb shop that you can browse around to keep you occupied. We dined in but in retrospect takeout may be better so you could also go next door to the Brewvado Taproom to get some beer at the same time. read more

I'm waffling between a three and a four. 10 years ago it would be between a four and a five. This year, last year, 10 years back the Vortex is consistently slow - even when you are the only one there. The food is good and healthy. Every now and again circumstances lead you to a place you hadn't planned on going, and the result is, well, wonderful! Such is how I came to find Vortex. My wife and I were on bucolic Lopez Island recruiting craftspeople to exhibit their products at our Club's annual Holiday Fair. We were getting hungry, so we consulted Yelp to see what was on offer. Our first choice had too long a wait for a table, and we had a ferry to catch. The only other option was a tiny little place called 'Vortex'. The vegetarian menu and rather 'hippie' vibe initially didn't appeal to me, but we were hungry and in a hurry. I'm so glad I gave them a chance! THE ROSES: Comfy, cozy, homey feel and ambiance. Vortex appears to be in what was once an old farmhouse, and shares the space with a new-agey 'Apothecary' that sells the usual woo-woo lineup of essential oils, crystals, etc. Far from being an 'eat it and beat it' kind of place, Vortex encourages you to sit around, get comfortable, and relax. There's a chess table and pieces ready at one table, and there are ample books to read. The staff is friendly, enthusiastic about their cuisine, and also very efficient. The real draw here is the food. No corners are cut in the name of expediency. Vortex uses fresh local products to the highest degree possible. Everything is made to order, and all the ingredients are prepped by hand. Looking at the way the vegetables in my wrap were cut, it was clear they were cut by hand, and the chef had some truly mad knife skills! We had the gazpacho, which was delightful, and a spicy peanut-pepper wrap that was truly a mind-blower. It featured brown rice and finely diced vegetables, herbs and spices, all tied together with a spicy peanut sauce. I expected it to have either a Thai or African flavor profile, but was surprised and delighted to find it to be neither. The chef/owner of Vortex appears to be a woman who is walking her own unique culinary path, and it's a good path. I prefer hearty cuisine, and despite being a vegetarian (and possibly vegan?) dish, I found it extremely delicious and very satisfying! THE THORNS: Rather limited menu, and they were out of several items. Not a place to go if you're in a hurry. Most orders will take 25 and up to 45 minutes (if they're busy) to get to you. If you're not in a hurry, this isn't really a 'thorn'. As I mentioned before the dining areas (inside and out) are very relaxing. NEITHER ROSE NOR THORN: Lopez Island is one of the least commercial in the San Juan archipelago. As a result, the whole place has a very rural and more than subtle 'hippy' vibe to it. Vortex is no exception. Happily, it's not the pretentious, hyper-politicized 'wokey' brand of faux-hippie ethos you find in the city. It's more of a laid-back 'I'll-be-me-and-you-be-you' kind of vibe that is, once you relax and let your guard down, actually quite appealing. Still, if you swing to the far right, I'd leave the MAGA hat in the car. No need to poke the bear, KnowWhatIMean? THE VERDICT: Vortex is truly a unique little gem that manages to create healthy cuisine that you actually look forward to eating in an environment that promotes a general sense of good feeling. When you see to tiny work area and old household stove the chef/owner uses, it makes her work even more amazing. I'm usually a GOP-leaning, 'steak-and-three-martinis' kind of guy, so to get this kind of review from me is saying something! Very highly recommend; by all means check this place out! read more

The smoothies are pretty awesome too- try the Marionberry one if they have it available! My wife and I came here for a quick lunch while exploring Lopez Island. The staff was very nice and helpful, and the food was freshly made when we ordered it. I ordered the curry and it was hot, delicious and complex, exactly what was needed after a long morning of hiking in the cold. My wife ordered a vegetarian wrap with peanut sauce and she loved the freshness of the salad and the serving size. The food was light enough to keep us going for the rest of the day. I stopped here for lunch during a bike ride and ordered the southwest wrap and carrot orange pineapple juice, it was so good! There was a 30 minute wait but I didn't mind because there was a nice area to sit and wait out on the deck. They also have amazing hot sauce to put on the wraps. read more

Great place for juice and smoothies on Lopez Island. Plenty of seating inside and outside, but the place can fill up since it's a medium-small cafe. This place seems most popular for juices, like the beet red juice blends or a classic green juice. However, the salads and soups are also good healthful choices. Consider a quesadilla or wrap if you eat wheat. Know that the food is so freshly prepared that your patience and time are essential parts of the process of receiving your beverages and bottles. I was craving a fruit smoothie and many locals said I had to go to Vortex. We headed over after walking around and instantly I knew what I ordered was going to be fresh. My craving for a smoothie was perfectly satisfied! I ordered an Strawberry Blueberry Apple smoothie. It also has banana in it. Well, all of their smoothies have banana along with non fat yogurt added to them. If you don't want yogurt added to yours, you can request a fruit slushee instead. While waiting for our smoothies I watched one of the making a quesadilla. It looked amazing. It had avocados, cheese, salmon and then topped with organic greens. I stopped in on a winter Wednesday at 2:55pm. They close at 3. I asked if it was too late and I was warmly told there was five more minutes to order. I offered to take it to go and was again warmly encouraged to stay that it was no problem. So I did and enjoyed the Southwest bowl with cheese. Absolutely fresh and wonderful. Yummy very fresh food, but I wish there were more choices for me...I have some dietary restrictions that means I can usually only order one or two items. However, I enjoy this place and visiting family have enjoyed it, too. Based on the other very positive reviews on Yelp we were expecting a very enjoyable lunch at Vortex when we stopped there during a recent trip. The restaurant is in a nice location with inside and outside seating. They have a very extensive menu including a great selection of smoothies. I had a grapefruit and peach with ginger, it was the best thing we tried by far, everything else was a letdown. My girlfriend had a drink with kale and some other veggies in it, very watery which wasn't too surprising, but it also didn't taste very good (my girlfriend like these sort of drinks). My girlfriend also ordered a quinoa salad, which came with some not very nice tasting brown goop on top. I ordered a combo with vegetable soup (just a random selection of veggies with no spice), quinoa and a very basic salad. The food wasn't bad, but it was so bland and unimaginative I would never go to Vortex if I lived nearby, I can easily throw together something much better myself in a few minutes. read more

Wow! The food was so fresh and the people were so friendly and welcoming. My friend and I came here on our first day of our girls weekend for a late lunch. We both ordered the spicy peanut veggie wrap on a spinach tortilla and had a really good bottled rootbeer they sell.
