This trail ride was not only bang for buck (longevity, hour long ride for great pricing) the staff was awesome! They really prioritize the health and well being of their horses and animals. While I was petting their ponies I was immediately handed an apple to feed them which was such a sweet thought! Elijah, Frank, and Frankie were awesome! Would definitely come back next time I get the chance :,)

Horses

The staff were all so friendly and welcoming. My partner had never ridden a horse before and they did a great job helping her get adjusted! The only thing I would hope to see upgraded is the scenery. Not sure if it was the time of year, but we mostly saw dead trees and dry land. Though this might be a reach, there was an area half way through the trail that would have looked awesome with some sort of man-made lake/ body of water! Besides that we really enjoyed the ride.

This is a wonderful place for both group and solo rides. As a minority-owned business, they demonstrate kindness and a strong commitment to accommodating their guests. My group had a fantastic experience, and we felt welcomed throughout our visit. The horses are beautiful and well cared for, which adds to the overall enjoyment. One suggestion for improvement would be to enhance the check-in process to make it more efficient. Overall, it was a great experience!

Nervous at first but got the hang of it QUICK! Slow trail so not for intermediate at all. Great for kids.

Great trail for the beginner and child. Mine were 8 and 9. They were nervous at first bc they've never been on a horse. they look HUMUNGOUS! The workers chose the right horse for each person and told us the horses' names. It's mostly a scenic route. Helps to get you acclimated. There is no training on how to start or stop the horse or get it to gallop. We really just followed the leader. I would have liked for them to have offered helmets, but when I realized how slow everything was there wasn't really a need other than just in case. They have farm animals on the grounds. The kids like petting them. Loved how close it was to my home. I would check with them first if I ever wanted to do more than a simple trail ride. If you have cash on hand, you'll want to give a tip for how hard these ladies work in the sun and heat. I sent a lil something over via cashapp.

I went a little early and just so happened Kris was able to get me going sooner rather than later !!! I was accommodated from the start ! Had the best horse ! He was a gem !!!! I'll definitely go back when I'm in town !!!!!!! Highly recommend!!!!!

I had such a great experience! The horses are rescues and were trained well. The trail we took was so peaceful and filled with blue bonnets! Make sure to wear shoes you do not care about because you will walk through poop areas. The only issue is parking, if the inside is full you will need to park on the residential road on the side!

I forget his name but he is a great guide!

For starters, the customer service is top tier! It's organized & timely. The horses are beautiful! Our tour guides Lindsay & Elijah were amazing! However, all the staff were friendly & helpful. Def will be back & you should check it out!

This lady was so sweet with my babygirl!

I haven't been riding since I was a kid. So a LONG time. When I moved to SA, I immediately wanted to look for horse riding- something small, nice, and, of course, affordable. I found this place while browsing online and I noticed all the reviews were really nice. $50 for an hour + $3 fee ? Hella yah! At first when I pulled into the neighborhood, I was confused and thought I was at the wrong place, but the place is actually immediately right outside of the housing division, it's not hard to miss at all. The driveway can fit one vehicle at a time- so be careful entering and exiting. I am 4'8" & weigh about 130lbs. And I'm always worried whether I can fit the saddle and stirrups. Main reason why I just haven't really found a place to get back to riding. There are so many horseback riding places that won't allow someone like me to ride their horses because of size. Which is hella crazy to me because jockeys are KNOWN to be my size riding 15-20 hands. We're born for this lol. Let's talk about arriving: once you make it into the driveway, it's a small parking area and there're some horses and some cute miniature horses for you to pet. There are a few stable hands setting up for the 9am ride (I had) and working really well as a team. Check-in was a breeze. Now Riding: Now I was put on Gigi's who's a bit smaller (of course) and the guy (can't remember his name) noticed that the stirrups couldn't be adjusted higher for me. But they said it was fine because as long as I can put my foot in and rest them a bit while pointing my toes down, Gigit will follow the leader regardless. And honestly, I wasn't worried. The guy was super genuine and everyone really trusts the horses. Like so much faith in them. That's how I knew I- personally- was in good hands. I was right behind Miranda who was our front-of-the-line trail leader. She was great. Patient. Got to know me a bit. But the trail itself was amazing. Went through some woods, then a a beautiful opening. Even saw a baby deer. They have a dog who followed along with us. He/she kept trailing in front of me and Gigit was right on his/her tail and the line behind me was slowed down further because I was already a slow rider lol. I was worried he would step on the dog, but I was like- it's an animals instinct to move lol (some times). I hardly had to tell Gigit what to do. He just kept following along and made his own turns and I felt so at ease. And when he wanted to reach for a leaf, he listened very well when we needed to keep going lol. They all do. All in all, best damn horse ride I've had in a LONG time. Very affordable too. You can bring a Fanny pack and keep your phone in your back pocket and wear a hat/sunglasses. Def wouldn't mind mentioning about getting some stirrups that fit petite folks like me but I ain't complaining too much because the experience was well worth it and they never once doubted that I wouldn't be able to ride. HIGHLY RECOMMEND FOR BEGINNERS and if you're petite like me and/or if you want to go by yourself like how I did!

Serape was the most gentle, kind, beautiful horse. I was really nervous to ride but the entire staff was very understanding and comforting. Michelle, Melissa and Jeremy in particular were all incredibly kind and I can't wait to come back for Serape. Thank you Westcreek Trail Rides for the wonderful and peaceful experience.

My wife and I just finished our ride and it was amazing ! We both had so much fun. My wife is a beginner and I'm intermediate as I've ridden horses since I was a kid, yet we both had fun and enjoyed the ride. The staff is so knowledgeable and friendly. They answered all our questions throughout the trail and even took photos of us once we were done. Recommendation: if you go when it's cold; BRING GLOVES ! Definitely recommend this place for a nice, relaxing, slow ride and if you are looking for peace and quiet from the world.

I came to Unbridled Spirit originally, because they offer learning on many different types of horses and I love "gaited" horses, which are seldom offered for lessons. With Stephanie McGlothlin as my instructor, I actually learned not just to be a more confident and competent rider, but how to actually "build a relationship" with my horse! What an incredible joy it is to build that bond! The confidence and skills that I have gained in a short time have taken place through lessons, but also, through the targeted clinics and workshops that focus on certain skills and approaches, such as "Liberty." I cannot recommend Stephanie and Unbridled Spirit more highly!

She takes time to explain everything even if you didn't understand the first or second time. Her passion for horseback riding is contagious. She offers tools to learn and implement when working with your horse rather than bandaids for crazy horse behavior. Her horses are patient and kind and I can't wait to bring back my whole family. I could keep going but don't take it from me. Go and see for yourself what you are lacking in your horse connection! You'll be glad you did.

The horses were very tame, gentle, and accommodating to the riders comfortability and experience. Or at least to stop somewhere and get a photo either with us on horse back or holding the horse. 2) Also there are some beautiful areas as you climb the top of the hill. Lots of things to look at, deer trails and the view is beautiful. This would have been nice to have the small group (like we did at the fallen tree) gather at the top to get a few photos. 3) And speaking of vistas one side of the hill over looked an area with homes, some very beautiful homes, however I think, I don't know this for sure, but if we could have gone to the other side of the mountain if just a bit, I'm sure there would have been a beautiful untouched vista. Now I did enjoy the story by the tree but a few (just two maybe) more stops like that to tell about the work being done, the wild life, something and (with his accent and ability to tell a story) it would have been nice to have him gather the group (if more than two) and tell them a story of something historic or just a even a fable regarding that area. Now I can go on forever, but I would have thought a small outpost where riders could unmount and get a drink, feel like they were on a real trail ride. Would have been really cool. But that's not his fault, that's just wishful thinking on my part.

This review is targeting active adults who love the outdoors and like to run, hike, or cycle…read more(mountain bike) on trails with a variety of terrain: grassland, limestone rock gardens, oak groves, and lake shoreline. If that doesn't float your boat, or you are looking for a spot to have a family swim & picnic with the kids, knock the stars down to 2 and find another pretty park to explore during your visit to North Canyon Lake. Old Hancock Equestrian Trail is a free, public, day-use-only park on land managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, like all the other land in the flood plain surrounding Canyon Lake. It is designated specifically for horseback riding, so everyone else must yield to those riders. If you get there before 9a on a weekday, chances are, you'll have the whole place to yourself for a 7-mile round-trip (out and back) trip from the trailhead around the north shore of the lake to Canyon Park Road (near Brookshire Brothers and Canyon Beach). The horses are more commonly seen on the weekends but may be there at any time, along with their owners' trucks and trailers in the dirt parking area. Just off the parking area, there are a few spurs that take you through the bushes to the lakeshore. This area is often used by anglers and kayakers to access the lake during good conditions for their sport, but its main purpose is for horses and their riders to take a dip after their ride. Toward the northeast from the parking area is the main trailhead, next to the informational kiosk. Take the path in the grass that heads north/northeast and follows the shore of the lake. About half the time, you'll have a water view; other times, it will be tall grasses, trees, or cow pastures. Depending on the time of day and time of year, you'll see a variety of birds, insects, deer, cattle, and maybe a big spiny lizard, a snapping turtle, or a harmless rat snake if you're lucky. In the spring, wildflowers and butterflies are abundant, but so can be the mud. In summer, it is hotter than Hades but the lake breeze is nice with the blue water and blue skies. In the fall, a few of the trees take on a magnificent red, orange, and yellow color scheme. In winter, everything is dried out and gray. I just love watching the seasons change here. At different points along the trail, you'll find rest benches, trail markers, and spurs down to the water, where you are welcome to go for a swim (at least at the time of this writing in June 2022). It's one of the last places around Canyon Lake where you can do that without paying a fee, but you've got to want it bad enough to hike there & back, and you can only bring what you can carry on your back. The trail (more like a dual-track dirt road) is mostly flat and open with sand, grass, or caliche surfaces, but there are a few challenging sections with short inclines, yards of bumpy rocks, and a couple of wet weather creek crossings. After a rain, there's also the possibility that some local dude from the adjacent neighborhood will have gone "night muddin'" out there in a 4x4 and made the ruts deep in some areas, but this has lately not been such a problem since the Comal County Sherriff has started warning about the potential $5,000 fine for using a motorized vehicle on the trail. A few words of warning: - This park property is between private land (residences, ranches, and businesses) and the lake. Be sure to stay on the trail and don't trespass over fences or beyond posted "private property" areas. - Shade is limited and the sun can be intense at least 10 months of the year, so wear a hat and sunscreen, make sure you're hydrated, go with a buddy, and try to time your trip for hours close to sun up or sundown. It would not be easy for an emergency vehicle to reach you out there if heatstroke happened. - No restrooms, water fountains, or trash bins are available to users of this trail. Pack in and pack out everything. Leave no trace. Litterbugs, shoo, stay away!

Investing in some SPF 40 might be a good idea. It is mostly a dirt trail that skirts the northern side of the lake and stretches for about 3 1/2 miles to end at Canyon Park. To find the trailhead, just find your way to FM 306 (I took FM 12 out of San Marcos and it was a scenic drive). Once you pass FM 3424 on the north side of the lake, continue for about 1.9 miles on FM 306 until you see a street sign for Hancock Road. This road passes by a small airport and then dead ends at the trailhead where there is tons of free parking. Take a picnic with you and maybe a swimsuit, because there are several places along the trail that would be a good stop for a swim and a bite to eat. I mostly felt like I was hiking on someone's ranch road that happened to be next to a nice lake. I saw several deer and birds along the way, and there were a few people on horseback also. I'm sure this trail would be full of wildflowers and butterflies in the Spring. Anyway, I hope this encourages you to check it out when you have a free day to play in the sun. I'm not sure how Yelp ended up with this in Lubbock, but don't worry, I am working with them to fix this error. Yes, it is on Canyon Lake. Google Maps must hate Canyon Lake for some reason. :-)
