A stone's throw away from my hometown of Santa Rosa is this little hidden gem. Westerbeke Ranch is tucked away in Sonoma and has a beautiful property. I came for a retreat and stayed one night, two days. Okay, first off, I just have to say... The food was amazing! Props to the chef, there was food for normal diets and special made dishes for vegans and other restrictive food diets! Everything was delish! I couldn't wait for meals! One of my favorite dishes had to be this pumpkin seed pesto! I'm just drooling at the thought of it. Meals were buffet style in a shared space, so other people who are staying will be sharing meals with you in the same space. The grounds itself are lovely. It's in a nice wooded space with little cabins everywhere, a pool and hot tub area, and many difference conference "cabins". Lots of outdoor work areas where you can hang out and do work. You can even schedule a massage in this cute little round cabin. There are some hiking trails around (although we didn't end up having any time for them). The property is on an incline, so if you have trouble with stairs or upward walking, it'll be something to consider. There are longer ramped inclines if stairs are a problem for you. The cabins themselves are nothing fancy. Quaint and cozy, we had a fireplace in ours which was so luxurious to have! There were three beds in our little cabin and a tiny little kitchen area as well. The bathroom was rather basic, felt like a childhood sleep away camp bathroom. There is a lot of parking throughout, and areas for you to drive up to the top (for people who have cabins at the top so you don't have to lug your luggage all the way up the stairs). Heaven. Down a rural street in outer Sonoma lies one of the most peaceful, beautiful properties the west coast has seen. Westerbeke glows, whether winter or summer. We came here for a professional development retreat and could not believe our good luck. To start, the grounds are gorgeous - only an hour from the E Bay and you feel like you're in another country. The cabins are rustic but beautiful (think shabby chic, only not trying to be chic). The main dining area boasts long, community tables and a roaring fireplace with couches for lounging. The tea and coffee nook is always open, which is blissful in cold weather. And the food. The food!! The meals here are all 5-star. If this were a restaurant, it would be off the charts with lines out the door. Even fare as standard as bread is astounding - they don't serve *just* focaccia, but olive sea-salt focaccia, warm and fresh out of the oven. Puh-lease!! Y'all are gonna have to roll me outta here. The staff is lovely and easygoing. They make everything a pleasure. You get to focus on the tasks at hand, which is a relief during a retreat. The trees are filled with birds (we found the resident red-shouldered hawk within the first 10 minutes), you can see the moon and stars at night, massages are offered onsite ($100, not exactly cheap but definitely appreciated), there are porch swings and hammocks for reading and a hot tub for soaking, and drinking wine by the fire pit cannot be beat (pick the wood-burning fire over the gas one, m'friends). This place somehow manages to feel like a cozy home and a luxurious, pamper-yourself resort at the same time. I'm sold. I'm moving in. read more

Westerbeke is a mixed bag. It is a beautiful property and aesthetically very pleasing to the eye. The family has curated a beautiful collection of furniture, art and design from the Mexican culture over the years. And they are making a lot of money from their "collection". I hope they are reciprocal in their relationship with the Latino culture in Sonoma County in recognition of how they benefit from their bounty. Or at the very least I hope they are paying the sweet and hardworking Latina ladies in the kitchen and housekeepers a living wage. The food was mostly wonderful with the exception of what tasted like frozen cod for dinner, an Eggs Benedict breakfast with eggs that had a hard yolk and overly sweet desserts. Also although another reviewer mentioned fresh organic ingredients-the eggs they use are most definitely not-I saw their packaging through the kitchen window and they have the telltale mass produced, factory farmed white shell. The amount it costs to stay in a shared cottage with an extremely uncomfortable twin mattress (springs would literally pop out in the middle of the night and wake me up), an old cheap space heater for heat in 40 degree weather, no blackout curtains and a porch light you can't turn off shining all night and a dinged up paint job with holes in the walls in the room-well it's just really not worth it. I really am curious as to where the money they take in is going? Salaries? Debts to pay off? Would be nice to have some explanation for the lack of the basics like new mattresses, bedding and better heat. When I pay luxury boutique hotel prices I expect at the very least-a decent bed. And yes I'm a little grumpy from waking up in the middle of the night to springs popping after paying hundreds of dollars for a room. read more

The pool was nasty and filthy the ENTIRE time we were there, thus, it was inaccessible. The jacuzzi area was under construction and the work people left their tools lying around which made navigating that area difficult and dangerous. The food was not covered during meal service and flies were constantly in our food. read more

I am inspired. I had no idea that Sonoma was paradise. I just stopped paying attention. But when you round the bend to Westerbeke, and the signs coax you to slow down, it is undeniable: this place is the ranch of Eden. The pleasant grounds are accented by birdsong. The pool is inviting, though freezing in February; the hot tub was a perfect substitute. We dined on the best food I've had in recent memory; every meal was a masterpiece. The rest of the time, I did yoga, hiked, and slept in the cozy cabins. I wish I made a habit of this kind of wellness self-care. This would be my go-to place. read more

This place is insanely beautiful and although only 45 miles from San Francisco, it feels like a world away. Every single staff member treats you as if you are their only guest and Wendy & Ted (owners) have perfectly decorated every nook & cranny. I would write a small novel in the food alone, as everything is organic, locally sourced & completely gourmet. They've recently added 2 glamping tents on the property, which my husband and I rented out for the night. We LOVED it, and had 100 questions from friends when we returned home asking where it was we were. We will be back, with friends next time!! read more

Cabins in the woods with gourmet meals...what more is there? We stay here for work retreats and the food is something we talk about the entire year. Always great vegan options with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Awesome staff and accommodation . Casa grande is amazing. Wildlife, cozy fireplace, shop on site with honor system, massages to order. Also, a colleague had her wedding here and said it was amazing. read more

Spent a weekend here for a recent "conference" for first responders - I was expecting one of those typical conferences, you know break out sessions with coffee that puts you back to sleep, cold pastries, fast food type meals and stereotypical hotel rooms. Well, not here! This place is surreal, spiritual, fresh healthy hot meals (I'm salivating just thinking about it!), and a staff that truly cares for guests and their experience. There is something magical about the cabins that gives you a good nights sleep. No TVs, nice breeze, and a bed, although nothing special, coddles you putting you out like a baby with a full stomach. We were treated with massages that a 20-min massage put my usual 90-min sessions to shame - the therapists they have on staff here know what they are doing. Although we were provided with insect repellent, mosquitos are prevalent here - I had packed my own which I ended up sharing with others so I definitely recommend packing extra or stronger repellent if you are tasty and you're not in the donating a pint of blood mood. A heavenly retreat in wine country and just what I needed after a crazy busy month of work. Our group of 6 girls stayed at the glamping tents on site - I think after this experience, glamping will never be the same. The tents were super nice and even had heating pads on the beds. The bathrooms for the tents were clean and not too far away. The grounds were also super peaceful- there was a yoga room, pool, and rock meditation garden- everything you need to get your zen on. The provided buffet was not cheap, but with the quality, I feel like we got our money's worth. read more

We attended a female wedding at the Westerbeke Ranch which was an amazing event at this location. The atmosphere created by this location enhanced the beautiful ceremony and celebration and all the guests had a great time and enjoyable experience. The food was all organic and delicious and the wine and service was excellent. I wish we could have spent more time there. Our wedding weekend at Westerbeke was just amazing. I'm still in a state of being blown away by it all! The service was incredible. Many of our guests commented on how they felt completely cared for, and how friendly and genuine the Westerbeke management and servers were. I could write a short story on the food. We had a vegetarian ceremony dinner, and I'm very pleased to report that both our vegetarian and carnivore guests were floored by the food. I'm very much a food geek (I even asked our photographer, Emily Merrill, to take pics of the food!) and this was like having Greens cater your wedding. Our weekend guests enjoyed their stay. From the hot tub, to the hiking trails, to just hanging out, everyone seemed to have a nice time. Kids and dog too! The value was excellent. And the low-stress of not having to rent the table, chairs, and hire an outside caterer was well worth it. I hope to attend a retreat at Westerbeke some day. It is a beautiful, special place. The Westerbekes offer something very special here. Passed down through the generations, this family run center is lovingly cared for by Wendy, Ted and their amazing staff. I've spent four weeks over the past year and looking forward to four more in the next 12 months. If the cabins evoke a kind of summer camp for adults feel, you'll need to think more of a homestyle, sonoma restaurant to appreciate the the locally sourced food and amazing flavors the chefs consistently dish out. The facilities are excellent for retreats and conferences. The land and natural setting has a sacredness to it that lends itself to clearing the mind and creativity. Whether hunkered down in a conference room, meditating in one of the many private garden nooks, or hiking through the trails, you'll find time for quiet thinking, as well as playful collaboration. The hot tub, pool and dining fireplace are also great for bringing everyone together and celebrating. read more

We just attended a wedding here. It's such an amazing place for a wedding - everyone had a fabulous time. The grounds are just beautiful, quaint, green, lush, and so relaxing. The food - wow! I was blown away. I was not expecting the food to be that good! The staff was so friendly and helpful. The weekend was flawless. Many of the wedding guests stayed in the cabins. It was like sleep-away camp for adults, so much fun! Since writing my first review, I've been back another couple of times, and everything is still as wonderful as before. Except one thing. They've brought in some new managers to replace our wonderful Margaret, who recently retired. These are ambitious, young guys, who want to market more to corporate retreats rather than groups like us (friends). So despite being ready to commit well over a year in advance to our booking, we were told that we weren't welcome except during shoulder season. Immense sadness ensues. We all used to feel so welcome here, now we feel unworthy and unwelcome. read more

I had the chance to attend a family reunion in late July at the Westerbeke Ranch and could not have left more pleased with the service, experience and property. I think that it is an ideal place to host any type of retreat, event, etc. you can think of. The semi-remoteness allows for privacy and space so that your group can enjoy what the property has to offer and enjoy one another's company while still being close enough to make a quick run into town for any necessities. All staff was helpful and courteous and I would like to thank the manager for mailing me my headphones that I left. nice scenery.. Tasty food.. Cabins not the best, our room had no hot water!!!!! No wheel chair ramps- not ADA complaint.. Was told we could have a late check out but then was told no - make up their minds or honor their word.. Came w a group for a company retreat.. Wouldn't come back - the scenery and food didn't out weigh the other inconveniences- no desk in room (necessary for work retreats) no mini fridges (necessary for medications or even water) but most of all- my breaking point... Was no hot water!!!!!! Such a shame.. Doors don't lock and staff has a little habit of just knocking once and opening the door! Whoa! Privacy please! I would stay for the day but never over night again.... read more

This place is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places i have ever been too. There cabins were cozy and comfortable, the scenery is just breath taking, there hot tub is well maintained and also have a very large pool that is also well maintained. I enjoyed the many areas where you can just sit or lay and just enjoy the moment. The owners, Mr. & Mrs Westerbeke are really sweet and are very approachable in speaking and meeting there guest. My favorite piece of this nostalgic place, by far, was the food!! I stayed here for 5 days and each day, the food just kept getting better & better & better! The head chef & her staff work extremely hard to ensure the presentation amd quality of the food is 2nd to none. A friend of mine got married here and it was beautiful. They do a great job and very professional, but with still a family run feel to it. The history of the place is amazing, I think they said something like it has been in the family for 4 generations. This is one of the best wedding spots I have been to. Went to Westerbeke for a yoga retreat. Never heard of it before but it was highly recommended by the instructor and group. Great California/organic cuisine, centrally located, rustic and clean cabins in a beautiful setting. Very tranquil and well worth it. Can't wait to go back. I bought their cookbook and they have another due soon. Loved the fact that they are still family owned (you must go and ask about the history.) The family certainly had vision. From the food, to the grounds, to the staff to the lodging, Westerbeke is a 5-star establishment. I cannot say enough positive things about Westerbeke Ranch! We had our wedding there a few weeks ago and it was the perfect setting for a relaxed, intimate, and unique celebration. I've heard many people say that their wedding was a whirlwind, with no time to actually stop and enjoy the company of their family and friends. We avoided the rush by staying on-site with our guests in the Westerbeke cabins. The group ate breakfast together, swam in the pool during the day, and, of course, partied it up in the evenings. The venue defined the weekend's stress-free atmosphere. Westerbeke site coordinators, Margaret and Celeste were fantastic. They made everything run seamlessly, from the preliminary planning to the day of the party, even when we decided to change up the schedule at the last minute. They kept it professional, but still created the impression that we were staying with family. Again, only positive things to say. I have been to Westerbeke Ranch two years in a row now for retreats with my teaching staff. Both events were amazing. Our previous retreats had always been missing something (bad sleeping arrangements- Marin Headlands, boring ambiance- Jack London Waterfront Hotel, or not enough food- a weird place in Walnut Creek). Westerbeke comes through with all this and more. The grounds are amazing. The staff is incredibly friendly and understanding of different groups needs. The meeting locations are all separate and private so many groups can co-inhabit the grounds without getting in each others way. I don't recommend the ropes course program but I think they are contracted by the ranch and aren't necessarily the same thing. It's a wonderful place for a wedding (according to previous reviews) or any other group gathering you might want to put together! Wow. This serene retreat center has an almost magical power to relax. It is spacious, green, quiet, and charming. There are board games and couches by the fire. Always-available tea, coffee, and hot chocolate. Delicious, indulgent meals and desserts. A rock labyrinth, hiking trails, a round chapel, and a massage room. (And wifi!) The cabins are definitely rustic (multiple beds per room and no locks) but they have heaters and nice modern bathrooms. I wish I could go on vacation here! read more
