This feed store is good. If driving from Fair Oaks Blvd onto Wayside, drive slow and watch out for major potholes and a hidden speed bump. Staff haven't been bubbly or outgoing at all, but they're polite and willing to load my pine pellets (best dang cat litter box medium ever - just use a sifting cat pan, line it with a puppy pad, and raise the sifting pan with 2" pvc connectors). Pine pellet bag is $10-12 for 40-50#. Best to call ahead on anything livestock-related in case someone pillaged their supply or they're low. Pine pellets are livestock-related. Oh, they have dog supplies, too. Since I'm unable to keep a dog yet, I don't know what the offerings or supplies are like for the doggos or anything inside but I did see they have some good toys and treats for dogs. And that smell in the warehouse... Straight from heaven. I need a horse again. So I can constantly smell that intoxicating fragrance of sweet feed, alfalfa and pine shavings... read more

Used to have a raccoon problem. The house was on Brookhill Drive, and you guessed it, there was a brook at the bottom of the hill that led 1/4 mile away to the beautiful American River. At night all sorts of little critters liked to sneak up into the 'hood and feast on whatever they could get their hungry little paws on - hey, we moved into *their* neighborhood, they were just living off the land like nature intended. Unfortunately the cats had a little problem sharing their Science Diet. What to do? A quick trip down to Western Feed and I brought home a safe and fun "cat trap". Put a little chow in the back and voila - in the morning I had my very own pet raccoons! One time I caught a whole family in there. So I'd throw them (wearing heavy gloves and carrying a two foot length of curtain rod for protection) in the back of the hatchback (with plenty of cardboard to catch the mess they made every time). I'd drive them down to the river and let the snarling little darlings run for it. Where the heck else can you get a good wild animal trap? Yippee-ki-yeah for Western Feed. Oh yeah, I bought my cat's Science Diet there too - they have safe and fun cat traps *and* good prices on cat chow. Whatever could they be thinking of? read more

I've been here a few times so far and the place is clean and the people always seem friendly. I come for chicken feed and straw. During the spring I noticed they carry chicks. It's summer now and I haven't seen any since. For you chick experts - I know there is a "chick" season. The lady said some ship from Texas (for those of you who care about where they come from). Masks are required. They have hand sanitizer at checkout as well. I'm glad this place is close, so I can keep my chicks fed and entertained with straw! read more

If you take care of feral or street cats and provide them w/a shelter-- you've got to use straw (no towels which hold water) -- and you can get a very large bag of straw here for that purpose. The cats really will like this-- esp. w/the cold weather we're getting again. read more

I went to Western Feed in Carmichael a few months ago to price out how much it would cost to start a backyard chicken flock. I've never kept chickens and was a nervous newbie. I met Ben, an employee at the store who spent about an hour with me helping me price everything and sharing all his chicken raising experience with me. We talked about how to care for newly hatched chicks, what to feed them, chicken coops, the various breeds of chickens and what to expect. I didn't purchase anything but I left feeling well informed and very confident about my upcoming chicken adventure. A few weeks later I returned to pick up all my supplies and four one-day old chicks! Ben was there and not only did he remember me - he was enthusiastic as he helped me choose my chickens. The nicest people EVER! My friend and I came with our dogs to look for some dog food. We were allowed to come in and wander freely - the dogs enjoyed perusing the goods and my friend was able to find the unusual dog food brand she needed to buy. Then a family came in and the kids came running straight to my dog, who is NOT kid-friendly, but one of the workers came over and distracted the beasts with some dog treats. Breeds they had this week and wouldn't sell just one chick due manger told employees to sell in pairs. But it's not posted anywhere in store. Their prices are little high compared to other feed stores. They can be friendly but cocky at the same time. I wanted to pull the girl checking us out over the counter this afternoon. She would rarely look at me and kept looking directly at my boyfriend. Then as we were leaving, she winked at him. Sorry sweets, you're plain and homely. It was very disrespectful in her actions. Western Feed, Carmichael, is just down the street from where I live and I have been relying on the store for quite some time. But recently I had very bad experience with store manager I don't think I want to shop there again. My boyfriend bought "flexi leash" there before he took our 2 y'ol Maltese to walk in Bannister park. He not only bought wrong size, the product came defect when he opened the package in the park. Him and I returned to the store in next couple of days for exchange and noticed he had lost the receipt. Manager said he couldn't do anything without receipt so I was waiting in the store for long time while my boyfriend searched for the receipt in his truck. He searched like mad but couldn't find it. When he bought the leash there he chatted with a seller lady for a while so he told manager about it hoping he would investigate and still exchange without receipt. Package also had store sticker on it with store name and product #, he could have back tracked with this or with credit card # because he used card. He did none for us and treated us like lier. My boyfriend is also in retail business and he is a store manager. We are returning customer to this store. He said if it were some place like Petsmart, they could treat 500 customers like that and still not hurting business but smaller local store like Western Feed, Carmichael, can not do this to neighborhood returning customer and be rude about it. We managed to get telephone # of the district manager and called him who said he would call store manager and make him exchange. Rule #1 - always go to the top, I guess.... My boyfriend down loaded his recent credit card statement which indicates exact purchase record at the store and brought it to the store next day. Store clerk said she couldn't do anything since manager stepped out. So we had to return again the following day. Manager was there but he acted irritated to see us again, and kind of ignored us. Other person processed and returned us money. We didn't want to buy another one there. After this we just couldn't. We went to other small pet supply store near sunrise mall where we know they need business and we get top notch service. DO NOT buy any chicks from Western Feed. I bought 8 chicks at 5:04 pm. When I got up this morning at 6:30 am and one was dead (there was one dying in the buff Orpington cage last night. I've been a customer of WF for over 20 years. I called to ask if they would replace it. Nope. I would have to buy another. They sold me a sick chick and won't stand behind it. I spend $35.00 a month in this store on feed. That's $420 a year or $8400 in 20 years. No more. You lost my business by not replacing a dead $4.99 chick. I love coming here, they have friendly and knowledgeable staff, good hours, and a wide variety of items to choose from. They sell a wide variety of things here from dog vaccinations and food to things for horses, chickens, and more. They also have VIP MOBILE PET CLINIC come here for dog and cat vaccinations. They all always go above and beyond remembering what I usually need and keeping rare items in stock. Open everyday and on Sunday until 5pm. On here, it says they're closed on Sunday. Surprised I haven't gone to this feed store before. I was on a mission to buy chew toys and 2 puppy vaccinations. I spoke with the friendly lady up front and she was really helpful in explaining the additional type of shots included in addition to the four that the puppy needed. She also asked if I have administered before and if I needed instructions, which is great information for people that haven't done it before. I didn't realize until recently, since now we are taking care of two wittle puppies, that feed stores sell puppy vaccinations that you can administer yourself! $8.49 for one 7-in-1 vaccination. Can't beat that, especially since you can purchase them and do it yourself without setting up an appointment with a vet. When the puppies dad was a puppy, we went with a puppy plan at our vet office. I felt like it was a waste of money.. of course we were sold on it not knowing any of the other options. Although, they still need their check ups and I can't diagnose a lot of my dogs issues or administer the rabies shot but I can give them their first puppy shot and keep track of their weight. The store is no petsmart/petco but it's small with competitive pricing on most of their items. Right next to the store is a warehouse full of quality dog, cat and other animal food. They had a cute store cat near the register that my son kept wanting to pet. They also had a bunch of chew toys, frisbees and chuck its (my dogs favorite toy). All canine and feline vaccinations, blood testing, fecal testing, ear mite treatment, micro-chipping, de-worming, and heartworm prevention are done here! What makes me irate is that this location is responsible for ordering straw for the other locations near by and yet they do not reorder until they are out. Having worked in retail, I don't understand how reordering AFTER a product is gone makes any sense. I have tried everything:calling ahead, stocking up, even having them call me and yet I am CONSISTENTLY told to look elsewhere for strae. Why would I drive around Sacramento when this place is less than a mile from home? Do they reorder other products in the same manner? I have been a regular supporter, not fan just supporter, of Western Feed in Carmichael, Roseville, and Fair Oaks for about 4 years now and alas they have finally lost me. So many times I left wondering why I continue to support this business with such hit or miss items and customer service. I can place an order online for goods and have my husband pick up. However, in the infinite wisdom of the "management", I cannot call in an order and payment (since not everything is available online) for my husband to pick up. I am assured that this is for my safety and protection, not just as a matter of my inconvenience. Now, I am no criminal Master Mind HOWEVER, Yet and Still I have to believe that the LAST and I do mean the very LAST items I am going to try to purchase with my ill gotten credit/debit card are Orchard Grass and Cat food from my local feed store, for which I call in my order OVER THE PHONE and then send someone later to pick up the order that I payed for with a stolen form of payment. I am trying to see it and I just cannot seem to wrap my pea sized intellect around the idea..., so I steal a wallet and I wasn't even smart enough to just race to the first store I see, Thank god it's a feed store!, with my stolen cards and leave with my ill gotten goods right away. NO I call in my order... what the .... Due to this absurd and ridiculous "policy" I will never darken your doorway again Western Feed, at any of your locations. I already preferred Bradshaw Feed even though it is further, you were just closer, not nicer, not as well stocked, and clearly not in need of more business. We usually head over to Western Feed and Supply to pick up scratch for the local wild turkeys that roam around our neighborhood. Even though our experience is pretty basic, they have always been super friendly and helpful with our purchase and even bring our huge bag of feed out to our car! Beware of the lack of parking though... when they are having their clinics the parking lot is full of people who are not actually shopping at the store! read more
