It's been a year since the work was done and overall it's very poor. Plants they selected were put in spots that get the wrong type of sun and either died or were stunted. They did a great job of getting it done quickly and the foreman on-site was very helpful but the manager that sold it was non-existent once he sold it. All he did was complain about fitting it into his schedule and dealing with traffic. There are better groups out there. The professionalism ends once the sale is sold. read more

I had three estimates and I picked Western because I wanted someone who would just tell me the options and get it done. The other two companies were really wishy washy at helping me decide options. I have read some of the other reviews and I can see how Ross might seem slightly abrasive, I think he has a slight hearing problem because he talks really loud. For me, his straight forward speaking was what I wanted. The women in the office, were EXTREAMLY kind and helpful and I found their style a nice balance with Ross. They were able to get me in a few weeks in advance which was awesome for my schedule. He showed up the first day with the crew to walk through, introduced me to Alex who was in charge for the next three weeks. I will say that I KNOW my retaining wall was harder than they planned because I am on a creek and it was PURE MUD where they were working. It took longer than expected but I was not charged any additional fees (I kind of expected they would tell me it may be more) I did have a couple add on's that I requested and they accommodated those items at a fair price. I can not express how hard the guys on site worked. I would go to work feeling grateful that I was not in the rain loading heavy pavers all day. I was SUPER impressed. I am very happy with my end project. I have a very modest home but I backyard looks like a million ;) the picture does not do justice because it will take to spring for everything to fill out. read more

Disapointing! Did not back their word, or promises. They took their check & ran. WLP needed my property to access their project to demo neighbors retaining wall & build a new one. They destroyed 160' of my freshly planted lawn. My driveway has been unusable for 3 months! Dumped 300 2-man rockery rocks in my yard for me to move! Destroyed my flower beds, freshly seeded lawn, top soil, 60 yr old Grape Vines. All buried under neighbors hillside muck WLP packed down for 3 weeks over my lawn along with in my 1 ton of my landscape rocks!. Nothing as grown thru for over 3 months! Western Landscape & Pavers, after 3 months ignoring my email, phone calls & texts. Finally contacted me! Insisting they will repair their damages they incurred Nov 2017, ONLY IF I sign an agreement they wrote, listing just a few of their damages & agree to take down my Yelp posts!!! Thank you, YELP! They feel my posts are harming their business! Rightly so! In short they are strong-arming me, a single 60 yr old woman & her disabled son! Overall - pretty good. Competitive price, and they found a slot in their schedule that was close by in date and worked for us. Finished on time, and on budget. The crew sent to do the work was very friendly and professional. My only complaint is that when the project was scoped, there were some sections of fence that needed repairs (which they did well) but I was also told "we don't paint fences" so I need to find someone else to paint the repaired sections. Also, a rear section of stepping stones were scoped but mistakenly omitted from the bid, which we did not realize until after we rewarded the job to WLP. It didn't matter because we decided not to do that section anyway, but caused some last minute confusion. Still, we're happy with the outcome. Thanks WL&P! read more

We had Western Landscape and Pavers repair our backyard from a flood. They put in a new drainage system, retaining wall, paver patio, artificial grass and landscaping. They did an incredible job and the backyard looks beautiful. Ross was incredibly responsive. He started the job when he said he would and finished when he said he would. Hugo, the foreman for the job was such a pleasure to work. He checked in with us for key decisions along the way to make sure we were aligned with key items for the backyard. The full crew was hardworking and very courteous, I highly recommend them for any landscaping needs. read more

We had been discussing reworking our backyard (that sits on the edge of a steep hillside), specifically the retaining wall, but we couldn't find anyone that had a well thought out plan or how they could do it. Fast forward a few month, we drove past a neighbors house and saw Western's sign, gave them a call and within a day or so Ross was at the house walking through what we wanted, what they would do, how they would do it, and the next day we had an estimate. The steep hillside, and retaining wall weren't the only challenges, the biggest is that there is no access to get equipment to the backyard, so everything would need to be done by hand. Ross and the Western team continued to work through our pricing questions, and we came to a fair price to do the work. When it came time to do the work, the crew did not disappoint. They were moving quickly, and were doing great work. They had some tough logistics and made it seem easy. The final product was an amazing backyard, a structurally sound retaining wall, and awesome new landscape around the house. The whole time, we always had access to Ross, and more so to his team that would email us back same day or within 24 hours. They always let us know what was going on. We would definitely recommend the Western team and will go back to them for future work! read more

Ross first came by our property on a Friday afternoon. He was rude and very rushed. He was clearly annoyed by my questions, and either wouldn't answer them or answered them incorrectly. His answer was literally that I should just leave it to the professionals. Huh? How does he know what I want?? For example, there was a wall I was trying to decide on the height; I asked him if it was step height and he emphatically said *yes*, but wouldn't look at the drawing even though I asked again. I later looked at the drawing and it was 18" tall. He had the drawing in his hand, but he didn't refer to it -- he just said the first thing that came to mind. This is an example of many. We decided to give him another chance and met Ross at the Kirkland showroom. I've never been treated so rudely by a sales person. He wouldn't answer my questions and told me I should just listen to a professional. He told us what blocks we should get and wouldn't even discuss options. He kept getting mixed up regarding dimensions and design and then would yell at us saying we gave him the wrong dimensions. It was an awful experience. We finally left because he just kept yelling at us. He made no attempt to be nice or help the situation. He clearly didn't want us as customers. He never contacted us again. Also, Ross refused to wear a mask during a pandemic, in close quarters, indoors. And he was spewing spittle as he yelled. I'm extremely concerned that I've been infected due to his carelessness. read more

Western L&P is outstanding - great quality at a fair price. I did a fairly deep review of the design, construction & materials used in building a retaining wall as well as modes of failure and why walls fail. Then we invited ~10 different companies to review the job on my property & submit a proposal. We did have a timeframe for completion - a graduation - so some couldn't meet that requirement. Some proposed a inferior design that would most likely fail at some point (mostly related to providing drainage for water to not build pressure and blow out the wall - if that happens you have blown any savings out of the water & have to start over). By far Ross was the most professional (Bonding & Insurance info up front in his presentation packet!), took laser line measurements to get accurate dimensions of the job, and talked about the need for finish elements that others left out i.e. fill dirt, caps for the blocks for a nicely finished appearance, changes to the irrigation system. The crew started on time & worked incredibly hard with the only delays related to weather & a holiday weekend. The fit & finish of the blocks is terrific - the design advantages of the Allan Block system means this wall will stay in place for many years to come. Our neighbor observed what we were doing & decided to pull the trigger on having WL&P install the same wall system on his property as well. Ross & his team were very responsive throughout the entire project. Highly competent - can't recommend enough! read more

Really good people but they did sublet my project out to another "company" and they were inexperienced. Really really really bad work quality. After its done. I found Few sections of the fence weren't even bolted to the posts. They were just sitting on the brackets. No surprise one section fall off during "wind storm". I had to repair the back yard door within the first month because it couldn't close properly due to defect door frame then I pretty much rebuild all my fences after 4 months. *No warranty on the fence* after one and half years My yard still not draining properly and it's lower in the center so it makes it even harder to drain water out. Well, at least the retaining wall still good. I hope they don't use that sublet partner anymore. read more

Western Landscape and Pavers doesn't seem to care about craftsmanship. They recently replaced a wall, fencing and lawn in my Marysville property. The wall they built meets standards but the fence they built above it was carelessly constructed with "scabbed in" boards to fill in gaps. They do not warrant fencing. The 2,000 square feet of sod they contracted to install was instead hydroseeded at the last moment at a significant cost saving to the contractor. Their tree felling sub-contractor felled a large section of a cedar tree into the house in the process which left a large hole open to the elements (and insects) for weeks before it was repaired. There were complications in having to dig deeper for the wall, but I don't believe the final charges should have come to almost 3 TIMES the initial bid. They were difficult to work with, condescending to the customer, and demanding of payment in full before the job was finished. A miserable experience all the way around. I would not dare recommend this company to anyone. I don't trust this company. I rate them a "0" on a 1-5 scale. read more

I gave these folks a resounding 5 at first and then as they dropped the ball on some follow up stuff I couldn't let the 5 star review stand so I took it down. Now that the dust is settling a bit, I will give credit where it's due- I think they are a solid 4. The positives: Ross and Stacey are great at what they do. Ross envisioned a yard for us when we were blank on what to do with the space. He did not charge us a consultation fee or give us a fancy CAD drawing that normally costs an arm and a leg; he laid it out simply but with enough detail for us to totally trust his vision. He laid out a plan with retaining walls, fence, repositioning a water feature, sod and landscaping. Once work began Ross was there almost every evening checking what his team did which was amazing to us. I don't like to babysit project crews and I did not have to in this case. If there ever was an issue I would text Ross and would get an almost immediate response- again, very impressive in my book. There were many hiccups through the project and while we could say they should have done the research before taking our deposit, we also acknowledge that they spent time going to the City multiple times to keep the project on track. Stacey is a great communicator and her diplomacy carries the business in a way that Western needs. She bailed us out of a difficult situation with the city (well us and themselves, really), is unfailingly polite and also quite responsive. The negatives: One incident that really ticked me off was when I, the paying client, was asked to measure how many trees would go in a space and then I got yelled at by Ross when apparently the measurement wasn't correct. Yep, that happened. Then they came out and measured the space and also missed a tree's worth of space. A couple trees were clearly planted crooked as well. However they came took the payment and no one acted to correct anything. There were a few other instances that weren't a big deal (including a flat tire from a crew member failing to clean our driveway the day he was supposed to) however I don't need someone jumping at my throat every time I give some feedback. 100% times something went wrong and I said something, there Ross was, getting defensive. I get it- he is proud of his team and his work but they do and will continue to make mistakes here and there, doesn't help to alienate clients. Most people probably expect mistakes to happen it's how the mistake is handled that separates a good business from great. In their case I would like to see a bit more accountability when something goes wrong. Overall the work done was quite good. Retaining walls look good and get a lot of compliments, as does the water feature they repositioned for us. The fence they did for us also looks really good and has gotten some unsolicited compliments from random passersby. We have already recommended them to other people and will continue to do so. read more

Cons: bad faith, bad work, building safety code violations, rude customer service. Pros: the company's own crew did good work. Owners, retirees, met with Ross on site, their home, to build several concrete cobble stone projects: 1. front yard patio with stair & wall 2. backyard walkway and stair 3. driveway Plans given on site. Project entailed significant excavation, demolition and construction. Ross indicated his company's crew would do the project and they would meet with owners and communicate about work progress at the beginning and throughout the job. He said he would be on site at times to manage the project to ensure quality (standard procedure for construction company). A crew from a different company the owners had never heard of arrived at 6-6:30 a.m. (construction not allowed this early in neighborhood) and did not let the owners know they had started working much less who they were. And, they did not provide any review of the project prior to starting. Significant excavation and construction was completed before the owners even knew they were on site; and, some of the work they had done completely deviated from plans, was an obvious eyesore and, violated building safety codes. Despite multiple requests, Ross never showed up on site to manage the project and resolve the problems. And, he sent a completely different company to do the work which was not discussed with, or agreed to, by owners. The At one point, Ross told the female owner to "take a chill pill chick" because she confronted him with the bad work being done, the building/safety code violations, the extreme construction plan deviations and, sending an unknown subcontractor and so demanded he show up to manage the crew, the project and fix the problems. He told the female owner to manage the crew or the crew could manage itself - the crew did not speak English and the lead spoke little English. Trying to force a female client to "interface" with a foreign, non-English speaking male crew, to try to get them to correct their construction errors is rude, unprofessional, risky to the client and completely unacceptable - especially, when the crew did not want to correct the major construction mistake and did not. Serendipitously, it ended up that the company did not receive any money up front and, in order to get paid, they had to fix the problems. They ended having to do the entire backyard walkway and front patio THREE TIMES, finally having to bring in their own crew the third and final time, in order to meet building & safety codes and to follow the plans. Parts of the patio still look bad due to severe staining and color mismatch. Fortunately, the company's own crew was respectful, professional, responsive and did a good job redoing the project. Examples of construction problems: 1. Patio stair riser 12" in height (the other 10 stair risers are 7" high) - an extreme Construction Building & Safety Code violation. This occurred because the concrete foundation was not dug/poured/constructed to the specified & correct height. 2. Backyard walkway leading to backyard patio & stairs was 2-1/2 feet off-center, built right next to a stone wall and, built without a stair step. The Plan had the walkway leading up to, and centered on, the backyard patio stairs and had a stair step. Recommendations: * Make sure your Contract specifies EVERYTHING (including job management, no Subcontractors, high quality work, etc...) and hold them to it with consequences specified if they do not keep good faith. * Know the building & safety codes pertaining to your project. * Do not pay them anything up front, except for cost of materials, until they complete the entire job RIGHT and to customer satisfaction. Many Consumer Rights construction groups recommend only paying for materials or, at best, 10-15% of the total cost then, paying the balance after the project is properly completed and customer approved. Or, incrementally paying only for work properly completed to-date on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. * Have them sign-off on the detailed plans prior to start of work. * If the company is professional they will have no problems with these recommendations since they know any savvy customer knows better. * FYI: years ago Seattle was rated as one of the top 3 worst cities for bad construction work and scams - equal to New York and Chicago. read more

You couldn't beat the value proposition that they brought though, the most foresight, vision, high quality materials and workmanship. I hesitated to leave this review simply because I just don't like to leave negative feedback, but then again, if my review contributes to putting these guys out of business, I'm sure Ross can easily get a job as a used car salesman.... I would have approached them about the issue I'm having, except that I never want to deal with them again. I recently checked with the Better Business Bureau and learned that there was a complaint about a financial issue. Had I read it before I would never have used their services. My issue is mainly about inferior planting, but their bid was much higher than others I received. Ross's smooth-talk convinced me I should hire them, but now I'm sorry I did.. One star is only for the friendly, hard working Hispanic crew. They did an excellent job with the materials they were given. The hardscape also turned out well. Their work was completed in the spring, including planting several small conifers. I fertilized them and watered them regularly throughout the summer, but they began to develop yellow/brown patches. When it progressed to the point I feared they were dying, I sought the advice of an expert at a highly respected nursery. When I explained how I acquired them - and from what company - he nodded his head knowingly. He told me that others have complained about plants they installed; they use the very cheapest fill dirt available and do not amend the soil. So my advice if you're looking for a landscaping company is to get several bids and talk directly to people who have used their services (I don't believe all these positive reviews here are real). Don't let Ross's slick sales pitches influence your decision. And if your work is to include plants, DON'T hire this company! read more

I live on an acre and about a third of it was swampy and full of blackberries. I wanted to renovate our back yard to make it usable for my family. I obtained four bids from different vendors from the Seattle Home show. I've had bad experiences with various contractors in the past so I wanted to go with a company that was most detailed in their bid. I ended up choosing WLP because Ross and his team presented me with the most detailed bid and professional design. I had a lot of questions and concerns but Ross and his team promptly answered and addressed all of them. This was a big project, and with the wettest rain season ever, we encountered major issues with water and drainage but Ross and his team addressed the issues and took the time to make sure that we had a lasting product. From start to finish, WLP had a large crew with lots of heavy equipment out working from early morning to past dinner time. I was really impressed and actually felt bad that they were out there in the rain each day. They were fast and efficient and always cleaned up at the end of the day (which to me was a bonus not to come home to a huge mess). At the start of the project, Ross promised me a "park like setting" and I was a little skeptical, but in the end, he delivered. Our project was finished just in time for nice weather and our family have spent almost everyday in our yard and so have the neighbors! Everyone who has seen our yard before and after, are absolutely blown away by the 1) speed of how fast WLP completed the project and 2) just how stunning the finished work is. Pictures just do not do it justice. I will try to post some. My experience with the owner Ross was awful. After we received a bid and signed a contract to have his company replace a retaining wall and create a raised garden bed in my back yard, we were informed that he fired the person who gave us the bid and then wouldn't honor the contract. It's not our fault that his employee underbid and when I mentioned that we had already signed a contract for this work, Ross got rather aggressive on the phone, saying we signed a contract agreeing that his company had permission to do the work, but we was using his 'option' not to do it. I was under the impression that a contract is binding. When I mentioned this, he gave me an ultimatum, he would either do the work at the new price (over a thousand dollars more) or pull out. This is after all the material was already delivered and in our back yard. Further, his employee who gave us the original bid, ordered the wrong material for the garden bed and when I asked to have it replaced to the correct material, Ross said he would have to charge us to remove it and an additional 20% restocking fee! I think it is REALLY BAD business to pass the cost of a company's mistakes on to it's customers. Now that I know how he operates, we would NEVER hire or recommend Ross, who was rude, disrespectful and unwilling to own his own mistakes, or even discuss fair options. The gents who actually did the work were great, artists really, respectful and solution oriented, for which we are grateful. But when all was said and done, our lawn was completely trashed and their clean up was inferior. I am still picking up stones all over the place. Run in another direction. Don't support bullies! read more
