Two weeks ago after seeing the smoked salmon prices I asked that 4 pounds be set aside. The price on their website was 14.99 per pound. My hubby went in to pick it up and they tried to charge him 166.00!!!!!! 40.00 per pound. I will never go to that rip off bait and switch business again. read more

Found out from the local pet store that they get their meaty doggie treats straight from the source, Western Meats so we headed over there ourselves. This place has a great selection of tails, hearts, rib bones, for both big and small dogs. The surprise for us (and now I think it's ridiculous that a butcher has meat) is that it's a great resource for meat products. It was cool seeing a tomohawk chop at a non-restaurant prices, so I'm gonna get one for the next barbecue. They have cordon bleus of different flavors (the bacon wrapped one has my name on it) meat pies and all sorts of treats and entrees. Plus they have rubs and sauces to make your next barbecue a success. They have freezers with bulk meat products for your restaurant or for your next picnic. I taped the receipt on the fridge so I could mark off what I didn't like. (First time customer ). When I went to mark the beef wellington I notice a charge for smoked cheese. Used to love this place-but go elsewhere. The good part - they are very clean and sanitary. Over the last couple of years they just stopped trying. EVERY cut they sell can be purchased cheaper at COSTCO or Safeway (simply make sure that your beef is choice or prime grade). During summer they tend to "thin slice" their steaks and charge by the steak thus costing way more per pound. Pre-prepared stuff is not all that good anymore - for better options try Johnson's Smokehouse in East Olympia. Another reviewer mentioned being overcharged for items not on in their cart - that has happened to me a couple of times. Their Christmas Prime Rib and Turkey deals are a scam. They set up rope lines likes its Disneyland of something and their customer service really gets snarly. God help you if you request that your prime rib is not pre seasoned because your wife knows how to cook! I was also amazed that they stopped carrying pre-made bacon cheeseburgers in the summer. Safeway got by business on that item. You will find that the cuts they offer are basically nothing special and available anywhere. Overall this place seems like a business that is past is prime, and has lost its way. I have managed to source everything that they sell through other stores that I already go to (Trader Joes, Johnson's Smokehouse, Costco, Safeway) and saved money doing so. read more

Western Meat Co is a nice little local meat shop. They have beef, pork, poultry, sausages, and some smoked items. I purchased some house cut bacon 4lbs for 15 bucks and it was pretty good. The Prime NY Steaks that I purchased was my favorite item. The marbling was good, and the steak was tender enough to cut with a butter knife, good stuff! Grilled them up on the Weber and it was perfect. There are fresh, frozen, and smoked items available here. It looks like most of the smoked stuff is from Johnson's Smokehouse Oly, WA. I purchased some jerky and while the flavor profile was really good, it was too damn hard to enjoy. The pricing is a little different here. When you purchase a steak the price is per steak, not per pound. The prices are affordable. They also have organic WA whole chickens. There is a large selection of smoked and raw bones as well. The store was clean and the service was standard. While this isn't my favorite meat market, I'd stop here without hesitation for some fresh steaks, bacon, or hamburger. read more

Pretty extensive selection of frozen products, most of it is better than what you get at Fred Meyers or Walmart (their nearest competition). Lots of dog food/treats, but no cheaper than the prices you would get at a pet store. I keep coming back for the Landjager, hard to find and theirs is ok. The customer service isn't awful, its just non-existent. My girlfriend bought me a combo pack of frozen pork and asked if they would swap anything out of the pack for ground pork. A good salesman would have upsold her the difference between the two products while convincing her she getting a good deal, instead she got a reply along the lines of "nope". I've tried asking before if they have any interest in ordering me fresh pork bellies, lamb, waygu, charcuterie, etc. ..."nope." I'm not sure what market segment Western Meat is trying to capture. I can mail order vastly larger varieties of frozen goods than they can stock, so why is everything frozen? I have a feeling that if this shop had to compete directly with the likes of Tacoma Boys or Top Foods the quality of service as well as the availability of fresh products would improve drastically. First, let me say, I have yet to find anywhere that will custom cut, grind, package, etc, in the Olympia area! I take care of my elderly father and I only cook for the two of us, so I went to the "butcher shop" wanting to get a small flank steak to make his favorite meal of london broil. I was informed that the only ones they have are the prepackaged ones with fat slabs tucked under. Well, they didn't say the part about fat being tucked, but that's what i got when i unwrapped at home. No choice on size, all same price. Have requested a piece of meat to be fresh ground and was denied. I don't know about anyone else, but this is worse than a grocery store! Employees are nice. They have a small selection for specialty mean store. The jerky is subpar. I am a jerky expert. Take a drive to Stewart's in Yelm for jerky. If you want bratwurst, polish sausage, etc it is prepackaged. Not ideal. The beef is great. They also have a selection of seafood. For instance, kabobs with shrimp and halibut for roughly 8.00 per kabob. Convenient if your close. read more

I didn't even go through with my purchase. The man who helped me placed my steak directly on the scale, without a liner of any sort. What had been on there previously? Chicken? Who knows! What's worse: he didn't even bother to wear gloves. He just grabbed the meat with his hands. I don't know the laws, but I've never seen meat handled so carelessly. They have a large selection and I'm alway able to find something I'm in the mood for. Teri ribs are one of our favorite but I also love the sirloin wrapped in bacon (very tender!) I called ahead asking for a center cut filet for Christmas Dinner Beef Wellington. I was told on the phone it came as a full packaged meat I trimmed for 12 something per pound or they could trim it but it would be $19 per pound. Well... I wanted it perfect and did not have the proper tools at home to trim it so was happy to pay the higher fee however when I got to the store I was told they would NOT trim it and the guy tried to explain how. I told them I would rather pay and have it done right and that I was told it could be done. Still refusing all the while he explained the price difference... ummm why a price difference if you don't even offer it???? So, I was sold this huge slab of meat which I got one slightly disformed roast out of and about 3 lbs of scrap meat and fat! So I paid MORE ($85 for the whole vs $60 for the trimmed) Very unhappy with this service. read more

Was craving some steak and this place was on the way back home from school. I decided to check it out and bought a piece of rib-eye steak. The rib-eyes behind the glass looked red and fresh, and tasty so I purchase a piece (about 12 ounces). When I got back home and unwrapped the steak from the parchment paper, I noticed the steak had a "starting to go bad" smell, and looked like it had been sitting out for a while. It wasn't entirely spoiled so I decided to cook the steak on a skillet. It came out subpar and chewy, and have had better steak from Winco and Fred Meyers. I guess this is expected, for a smaller butcher shop that does not get high traffic and a lot of customers, the meat probably sits out for as long as it can. I don't think I will go there again for steak. read more
