Before even meeting the very impressive Dr. Hutsell or visiting the office, a receptionist at Western Trails might have saved my dog's life. Although my dog was acting mopey enough that I figured I should get her checked up, I wasn't concerned and was fine waiting the 9 days until the next regular appointment was available. But once we started scheduling and Larissa asked the symptoms, she said, hmmm, let's squeeze you in tomorrow morning. Thank goodness she did. My dog's red blood cell count was so low (10) that if it had kept dropping it would have gone beyond the ability of steroids to bring back up. She needed an emergency blood transfusion. Dr. Hutsel explained everything with the perfect mix of calm and urgency, explained my options, and referred me to an unaffiliated vet hospital in Albuquerque. Fortunately, anemia is treatable so I'm optimistic my pup will be fine - and I plan to go to Western Trails for all follow-up and treatment from now on. Thank you, Western Trails! read more

My dog had an obstruction, he received wonderful care here, and his life was saved. He ended up needing surgery for removal and I will say this vet is extremely affordable compared to others. I was recommended to come here by a coworker. It was an hour drive away but it is well worth the drive. read more

I have taken both my dogs here and have had excellent service :3 my dogs are actually excited to go to the vet which makes me more comfortable going in. Last place I remember going to we had just gotten a dog and I was honestly scared to go in because they were so mean about the dog having some health conditions (family dog we had for less than a week from the humane society, he had kennel cough, ear mites, and was underweight). we rescued our dog from East Mountain compaions, with adopting our fur baby he came home with 2 different parasites. we had treated him with our vet, and they were gone. when we brought him to Western trails to be fixed as part of the adoption he came home again with Parasites. we were not please at with the clinic. when we were there, it was very dirty. when I called to talk to the manager to let her know that we again have to treat our fur baby for parasites after visiting their clinic. I was told we were not welcome back there and was hung up on. I would never recomend this clinic at all. read more

So my Wife and I are traveling cross country with our two dogs in our RV. Edgewood NM was one of our stops along the way. Last night we pulled into our campground for the night and after a long drive we walked our dogs. When we got back to our trailer I noticed that my male dog was licking his paw after telling him to stop and of course he doesn't. I took a look and saw that his paw was swollen really bad. We were very lucky to find Western Trails Vet hospital it was only 4 minutes away from our campground.. I was able to call them in the morning and told them what's going on. They told me that we would have to be a walk in appointment and to go ahead and bring him in. Once I arrived I parked and followed their COVID procedures and did a phone check in. About 35 minutes later a very nice tech came out to my truck took my information and then brought my boy into the hospital. Around 45 minutes the Doctor came out and explained everything that they've done. We were very fortunate that it was foxtails and not anything worse. They sent us with some meds and said we can still travel. The night before and the next morning was very stressful, because we are not from the area and our fur baby was in pain. I found that Western Trails was 100% amazing, the staff took the time to listen to what was going on and to help put our fur baby on the mend. Being that we are traveling it was great to find a place that cares and all of the Staff was so friendly and caring. This place is a great. Thank you Western Trails for your help. read more

I have been going to this Veterinarian for 16 years. I have had many wonderful experiences and some not so good, but tried to be understanding when things went awry. Over the years their prices have increased, which is to be expected, but even when I could barely afford it I still went there instead of other vets because I trusted them. Over the years I've spent thousands of dollars at their clinic. Things have changed now that they are a corporation. What happened today was the last straw. I tried to make an appointment for one of my dogs and was told I had to give them a $60 deposit to make the appointment! I couldnt believe it! In this area a lot of people are low income like I am. I want the best care for my animals and try my best to pull together the money to get them that care. I dont always have the money when making the appointment that I will have on the day of the appointment, and if my pet is sick I cant always wait to make the appoinment since its usually a week or more to get in. I think this vet cares more about money now than thier patients. I am saddened by this and will be finding a new vet for my 2 dogs and 5 cats. read more

Ive taken 4 animals here and they have done a house call emergency multiple times. Usually happy with their service. Last night my big ram, who saved my life, was having problems. Calling the emergency line I get a lady saying, "i don't know"..... way to apply for a job you weren't prepared for moron. I'm sitting here watching my boy die for 2 days now. With no way to carry him somewhere to get help and this place and punk Dixon at east mountain leave us hanging. Still shaking. No meds. No help. It may be too late but a rescue came through. As a vet who cares while animal is there I give em 10. But when the world and God turn on u these guys will be driving that bus out. read more

WTVH failed to properly protect, monitor, and treat my horse's sutures and wounds and the direct result was that my horse became infected and he became diseased. The final blow to his life was delivered when they failed to recognize his symptoms of neurologic disease and misdiagnosed him. The direct result was that my horse was deprived of the proper diagnosis and the proper treatment. Being deprived the proper treatment, the disease progressed in my horse to the point where, when Dr. Hutsel delivered the proper diagnosis, the treatment plan for him was death. It really is that simple, or so I thought. To add insult to injury, WTVH appears to be fighting responsibility for what happened to my horse. About a week after he died, I called WTVH to get a copy of blood work that I was told Dr. Hutsel had sent to an outside lab, and I also asked to know what they had listed as my horse's cause of death. Without any hesitation, I was told they had nothing to do with that; it was another vet. Sloppy, incompetent horse vets and dishonorable, crappy human beings is my takeaway from this experience using WTVH. read more

These folks helped us tremendously when we had to send our doggie over the rainbow bridge. Even though our dogs were not patients there, they did a home visit to be able to put him down in the comfort of our home. They were empathetic and caring. I was traveling across New Mexico with my cat when he began to have an adverse reaction to kitty Xanax. After Googling the closest vets, I found Western Trails veterinarian and gave them a call. The woman who answered, Sherri, was as kind as could be and immediately expressed concern and compassion for my case. We arrived an hour later, the longest hour drive of my life, and they immediately put us in a room and Sherri came into to meet Kevin and take his vitals. She asked questions, listened thoughtfully to my answers, and loved on Kevin while making sure he was taken care of. I was immediately calmed knowing that she cared. When the vet arrived, Dr. Thornton, she explained they had been doing research on the case since I had called and even called around to nearby pharmacies to find a counteractive medicine. Unfortunately the medicine was not available, but they had additional options including giving Kevin needed fluids. Not only did they care for Kevin, but they educated me important facts and opportunities when traveling with cats so that the rest of Kevin's trip would be comfortable. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. We left with Kevin (and me!) much calmer and healthier than when we arrived. I am so grateful for the kindness of these strangers to care for my sweet Kevin. Thank you!! read more

I was not impressed with the report my adult son gave me of our newly adopted puppy's visit. I responded to a survey they sent to me. They had advised my son to carry our pup because a parvo pup had been in the clinic and to get her an extra parvo vaccine as a precaution. They also did a very quick exam and vaccine, causing a large lump (which sometimes happens). I wanted to be honest with them that the visit was less than satisfactory. They sent this email in response, lying and deflecting. I would not take another animal there, no matter what the cost! And this particular son is a very polite person. Will definitely stick with our regular vet (we used WT because it was covered with her adoption fee from the shelter) 'We can assure you that every wellness appointment is thorough and complete. Often times we are engaging you in conversation while we are working and most people do not realize that the whole time we are actually doing a full physical exam. We can also assure you that parvo animals never enter the building, unless admitted to the parvo ward. If a client walks in with a parvo animal there is immediate and thorough sanitation. I am not sure where your son got that misinformation from. I am sorry your animal got a lump after it's vaccine, that is an unfortunate complication. Warm compresses can relieve irritation. We would be happy to transfer your records to a different vet however because we also ask that our clients treat our staff with respect and your son did not.' read more

My family and I were staying at the RV park down the road last year when our pit bull got extremely sick. We called Western Trails and they had us bring her in right away. They had her over night and diagnosed with Addison's disease within a day. In no time at all she was back to herself and we were so happy to still have her as part of the family. Dr. Thornton and all the staff here have been so amazing. We go for monthly shots to keep her healthy and she has since had two ruptured ACL's she has needed surgery on and they have always gone above and beyond to give her the care that she needs. We use all the vets here for our five pups and three horses and an occasional cat issue. We have had only good experiences over the past 10 years. They are kind and always there when we need them. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. Dr Thornton and Clark are who we see the most. The only service I wish they had was a vet that could care for my daughter's pet rat, but we need to go elsewhere for that. The front desk staff is also terrific! read more

This place is very friendly and helpful. I called after hours and they called back shortly after. I forgot her name but she truthfully told me that what I described was going on, can wait till tomorrow morning for a cheaper cost. But she made it very clear that if I was too worried and wanted my pup helped right then and there, that she was ready and at the facility already. I really appreciated that. I waited till he morning and was helped right away and they gave me a time too pick my dog up and ended up calling before that time. They were very fast and efficient. Took my dogs there they scared my youngest dog who's never been aggressive or mean even with new people or new dogs. Handled him wrong said he was aggressive and then changed ME an $80 changed for aggressive/viscous fee on top other fees they tacked on. They had said the person in front Handled him wrong and won't be charged that fee especially because I wasn't allowed in the building with him due to covid. I was understanding of covid restrictions but if they couldn't handle a bigger dog then why have me wait outside? Then charged me for them not being able to do their job? I had a very bad experience with Dr. Stacie Boswell. She is an arrogant know-it-all who seemed convinced that she knew it all without even touching my animal. With the high price of an examination, I expect my animal to be examined. It was obvious from her comments that she had not even read the minimal amount of information that was asked of me when I made the appointment. Stacie, you might be a "doctor" but you are certainly no health care "professional." You need to go back to school and learn a little bedside manner. By the way, contrary to your dire assessment, my animal is doing just fine. I did not need your expensive so-called examination - nor your condescending attitude, for that matter. We used Western Trails for an emergency visit. Initially I thought everything was great and the service provided was wonderful. We had to return for a drain removal, and then return again 2 more times that week over concerns we had with how the wound was healing. When we returned with our concerns we where brushed off and told that this is how the wound was going to heal and to expect to have it open up. I wasn't sure how leaving a wound open and exposed to the element was the best way to heal is especially seeing as its was not small, but again was told that this was what we had to deal with. So I thought the doctors must know what they are talking about. Over night the wound completely opened up and every stitch popped as well as the buttons they added for support. I refused to use them again, and called our normal vet in town to have my dog seen. Long story short our dog was grossly infected and had to have another surgery to try and repair what they could and then support her leg to heal. We are currently making daily vet visits in town, for wound cleaning and de-breeding. She is now on the correct antibiotic for skin wound repair and is resting easy. When I contacted Western Trails about this problem the only response that was given was they must have been really busy on the days we came in with concerns and that is why we where not helped properly. SORRY not the correct answer! My dog was very sick and is currently under doctors eyes every day trying to get the HUGE wound to heal! If she was taken care of properly from the start we would not be in this mess and she would be feeling so much better! read more

Our three little rescue lap dogs see Dr. Clark - but we have seen Dr. Thornton at times too. Dr. Clark is very thorough and gentle with our pups. One of our dogs had to have urgent surgery a few months ago. We were quoted a price and I was pleasantly surprised when the actual cost came in a few hundred under the original quote. Our pup came through with flying colors, can't even see the surgical scar. She was well cared for while at Western Trails and has been fine ever since. She is on a prescription diet Dr. Clark prescribed which has really made a huge difference in her health. We very recently adopted a stray rescue and took her to Dr. Clark - she got her on antibiotics and drops and she is like a new dog now! Our new pup also needs fairly urgent surgery - the rescue we adopted her from has taken in MANY donations for her to cover this surgery but will not cover Western Trails Vet for an unknown reason. We have been trying for nearly two weeks now to get into the two rescue contracted vets and have been met with indifference and promised yet unreturned calls. We have a re-check tomorrow at Western Trails and plan to have Dr. Clark just go ahead and do the surgery as we fully trust her and will pay out of our pockets for it. She is very knowledgeable, competent and thorough. Two of my dogs are bitey but they are calm whenever the wonderful staff at Western Trails handles them. They are very busy right now - there is an influx of dogs being adopted and it's summer so rattlesnakes abound - but they still handle the heavy load with compassion and courtesy. read more

She is no longer there full-time as she was years ago and the "Man" is a veteran veterinarian who began the VCA in ABQ on Montgomery near Eubank and retired. This is a pretty top notch vet. I have to disagree with the negative review from "Dianne B" about Dr. Boswell, too. Dianne B. must be a "B", because Dr. Boswell has been very easy to work with and friendly at all times with me (and I am not an easy customer). As a matter of fact, all of Dr. Boswell's staff is extremely friendly and helpful. I feel like they listen to me and go out of their way to be courteous, even when I ask a lot of questions (including questions about pricing). Dr. Boswell has looked at my goats, Great Pyrenees, Anatolians, and German Shepherds at both her office AND at my home. She is very attentive, funny, listens well, and understands that those of us in the country who raise animals both love our pets/livestock AND want to save a dollar by not paying for extra services or medicines our animals don't need or that we cannot afford. Dr. Boswell is also VERY knowledgeable. She sits down to explain to me in simple terms the science behind whatever it is we are discussing. I remember recently her explaining to me at great length, with picture aides, the various differences in the cells of a dog in heat because I was concerned that my Anatolian had "mismated." She did not need to take the time to teach me everything I needed to know about the biology of a dog going into heat, but I appreciated her doing it anyway, and now I feel like I understand better when dogs are most fertile and what occurs in each stage of heat. Every time Dr. Boswell shares insightful knowledge with me, I feel like it better equips me to know how to deal with issues on my own instead of having to go to the vet every time an issue arises. As a matter of fact, I had called the emergency after hours line of Dr. Boswell when on a Sunday I discovered that my Anatolian might have mated, and after some discussion with Dr. Boswell she advised that although she would be happy to visit my property to attend to what I thought was an emergency for a very expensive breeding Anatolian, she could see my dog without an appointment as soon as she opened on Monday morning in order to provide an urgent consult without me incurring the additional costs associated with emergency care. Although Dr. Boswell is extremely knowledgeable on a wide variety of farm animals and dog breeds, on more than one occasion she has told me that she did not know something for certain, but would find out. Sure enough, I will get a phone call later and she has by that time consulted with multiple vets she is friends with to find out what she needed to in order to assist me in making a medical decision for an animal. I understand that no single vet knows everything there is to know about every single kind of animal, so I appreciate the fact that she is honest about that and will work to find the answer nonetheless. I never felt like she was an "arrogant know-it-all" as the other reviewer stated, but then again most of us in the country are not hypersensitive jerks like Dianne B makes herself out to be in her review. If I ever find myself standing behind her at Dr. Boswell's office, I might have to ask her to take rude and pretentious self out of line so that the rest of us who do not feel entitled can have our animals seen by the kind country doctor. So, if you want affordable and expert service from someone who will take the time to give you the information you need to make sometimes difficult decisions for your animals, this is a great vet. If you like to ask questions about services, prices, and the underlying biology of veterinary science, this is a great vet. If you are the kind to argue with the vet because your internet search made you an expert in veterinary science overnight, then I would rather not stand behind you in line. Please kindly cancel your next appointment with Dr. Boswell so that I can get an earlier appointment with her to have one of my dogs neutered since all the other vets within 100 miles want to charge me MUCH MORE than what Dr. Boswell charges! read more

Horrible experience with this vet,Dr. Clark. We had used this vet for many years with no problems. We took our miniature australian shepherd to be neutered. He died after receiving the premedication for surgery. He was eight months old and was being trained as a service dog for my daughter. It was devastating, but more than anything we could not get any answers as to why this had happened. I do understand that things happen, but Dr. Clark was so cold, and would just say "I'm sorry for your loss". There was some information relayed to her and her assistants in the morning of drop off regarding MDR1 genetic issues, which was brushed off. He was the last dog of the day to have surgery, and i am sure that the precautions given were not heeded. This was devastating to my daughter, as they had spent every minute together for several months. I had noticed in the past that Dr. Clark was not very open with communication and was a little bit surly at times. I am a nurse in the O.R. for a big hospital. I know that a little compassion and genuine concern for family members goes a long way when bad things happen. We did have good experiences with the other vets at this clinic, but we will never go back there again. read more
