The Flagge der Bundesrepublik Deutschland/Germany with its distinctive black, red, golden yellow horizontal stripes fluttering in the wind of Arizona high country caught my eye driving along old Route 66 in Seligman which means blessed man in German.  Westside Lilo Café with a gift shop featuring Route 66 memorabilia is closer to an American diner in terms of its menu with a bit of Mexican. There are only three German items: Bratwurst Sausage in a sour dough roll; Jäger Schnitzel; Schweine/pork Schnitzel and not Wiener Schnitzel since by definition, the meat must be veal. 1) I chose the Jäger Schweine Schnitzel which is pork pounded to a thin steak, lightly breaded and pan fried. Reminds me of the Italian Costoletta Milanese.  Jäger (yay gehr) means hunter, and this savory brown sauce is chockful of mushrooms which was traditionally from the German forests. This gravy has a satisfying brothy Umami.   Ordered accompanying French fries crispy, but due to the high heat, they came out dark brown and still not having that Belgian style twice fried light crispiness although I was told they were hand cut potatoes.  The mushy, dull green peas & carrots look as though they come out of a can from the 1950's. A mini roll rounded out the dish. The Jäger Schnitzel portion was fine.  Perhaps ditching the canned peas & carrots and replacing it with a little salad would be more refreshing. And brining the cut potatoes and frying them under lower heat twice would create better French fries.  2) Coconut Cream Pie: The light yellow filling was thickened, luscious, dairy rich. Standard pie crust a-ok. But the whipped cream tasted like coolwhip with a slight chemical after taste. I had to scrape it off which unfortunately also eliminated the toasted coconut flakes.  3) Carrot Cake Muffin was another matter. Cake is moist, soft, velvety. Sweetened and aromatic by brown sugar toastiness, touch of vanilla.  The off white cream cheese frosting is thick, creamy sweet, but the crowning flavour is a good dose of almond extract that adds a refreshing, nutty scent that makes this carrot cake so alluring. Half a walnut crowns the top.  2-3a) Iced Tea plain since I planned to drive all the way to L.A. right afterward. What impressed me was my waitress Kris and her dark haired working partner. When a huge crowd suddenly came in, they went into high gear coördinating their movements and strategies like well planned choreography.  Remembering many multiple orders, literally running from the kitchen window to various tables to deliver the right dish to each customer. Of course, there were customer requests to fulfill along the way.  All this was done with smiles and rushed friendly small talk. They are thoughtful, kind, charming, enthusiastic about their jobs which is so very refreshing and moving.  I jokingly told Kris that she didn't have to go to the gym.  Food here is good, but the two waitresses make coming to Westside Lilo a joy. Their warm banter among themselves & the customers make this a feel good place.  Earlier, they made time to give bons mots to an older gentleman who came every Tuesday like clockwork making him feel very welcome.  Truly the spirit of Route 66 is exemplified by these two "Laverne & Shirleys". This was around 6pm on April 9th 2024. One day after the total solar eclipse that swept through the U.S. farther east. So glad I experienced the love. Lilo, if you're reading this, please give them a well deserved raise if you haven't done so already.  "Geben Sie ihnen eine Gehaltserhöhung doch bitte." 5 stars for the kind service. A good meal with great service and even better ambiance. We ordered the chicken fried steak and Lilo's famous burger. The pretzel bun was a nice touch on the burger. The food was good and our server was always coming by to check on us. I highly recommend the carrot cake. It was more dense than what I expected, but in the best way. I think a whole table could share it because between 2 of us, it took days for us to actually finish it! What was memorable to me was the outdoorsy theme of the restaurant with a German twist. It was the perfect vibe for a trip to the Grand Canyon. If you want some good diner-style food I highly recommend stopping here. read more

Stopped by a nearby Western American restaurant for our last meal before heading to camp at Havasu Falls. The atmosphere was inviting, with a charming, rustic vibe. We started with the black bean sandwich, a vegetarian option that was surprisingly delicious. The southwestern chicken sandwich was good as well. The pork loin was okay, but the fries that came with each dish were disappointing--dry and tasting like they'd just come out of the freezer. On a brighter note, the cod fish and chips were a hit; the chips were so good I couldn't get enough, and the fish was cooked to perfection. Unfortunately, our experience took a downturn. Our server was hard to find, and basic requests for water refills and condiments went unmet. We eventually had to grab utensils from another table. After a long wait and asking other servers for help, our server finally reappeared, and we ordered the classic cheesecake and lemon meringue pie. First time here. The food was good it was just a cute place to boot and the server that I had was just a doll. Easy parking. I was passing through and decided to stop here and there were so many places on this little tiny stop to go but I chose this one and I'm glad I did. Everybody knows everybody here and if somebody comes in they don't get ignored everybody who works there is aware that they are there. They have a really cute gift shop with all kinds of fun stuff. I also brought in my little therapy dog and they treated him very well. I bought him his own chopped chicken. I definitely recommend this place if you happen to be going past this exit it's worth the stop. read more

Westside Lilos This will be a bit of a mixed review. My wife ordered the meatloaf. Very generous portion but she ordered it with no gravy. It was delivered smothered in gravy. Instead of sending it back she told the waitress that she would just scrape the gravy off. Sadly, after she scraped the gravy off, she found that the meatloaf was only lukewarm. So, they ended up taking the plate back and refiring it. I ordered a Ruben sandwich. Again, it was a generous portion with the coleslaw and 1000 island sent separately. I saw another customer who had also ordered the Ruben. She had to send her's back because he marbled bread had been toasted until it was black. I spoke to the manager who was defensive and told me that it was hard to get cooks out their way, it was very busy and they had a chef and a young cook who was only on his second day. Excuses don't really cut it with me. The chef should have kept an eye on his newbie and whom ever was doing the expediting was not looking at the orders before they went out. Lilos claims to have World Famous Carrot Cake so I ordered a piece. It was a huge piece ($10.00) and was good, but carrot cake is one of my favorites, and I have had at least my share of it, but I would not have classified it as being World Famous. read more

The service was quick and friendly. The ambiance of knotty pine, German license plates and animal heads on the wall was just like in I was expecting from the YELP pictures. I got worried when I took a taste of my water, the glass had residue on the glass and the water tasted weird. When the Ruben arrived it looked good albeit on the small side. When I was adding my Russian dressing, there was (gasp) mayo, yuck! The Swiss cheese tasted like processed, plastic and nothing like Swiss. And the pastrami was minimal. Hey, I know that I am in Seligman buuuut, I blame Cindy's Diner in Holbrook and oh my goodness, the best and most memorable and insanely delicious Ruben. The moment you walk in, you're welcomed by the hospitality of the staff and can seat yourself. I ordered the local's favourite which featured eggs of my choice, deliciously fried hash browns and soft biscuits. If you are ever headed through the Seligman area, don't miss this cute little restaurant! What a gem that we found! First off, the restaurant is rustic, but very welcoming. The wait staff were absolutely lovely, and we got some great recommendations from our waitress. They serve breakfast all day, but our family opted for lunch items. They did not disappoint! My husband and I each had the meatloaf special. This was a ginormous hunk of delicious meatloaf and gravy with a side of mashed and gravy and seasonal vegetables. I swear we could have shared one plate, but it was so delicious! My son had a cheeseburger, which is served on a pretzel roll and a side of homemade potato salad. The food had lots of flavor with a German kick. Best part about the restaurant was the dessert case. Massive pieces of homemade pies and cakes. Split a meal if you have to just so you can finish off with a piece or two of their offerings. We split a tres leche cake and a caramel pecan apple cheesecake. First of all, the parking lot is dirt & gravel if it's wet or snowing your go na get muddy. Now the food is pretty good I've never had a bad meal,the servers stay on top of things for sure and try to get you fed when the foods hot. We were on our way home from Sedona which we experienced eating a lot of food that was highly priced, unnecessarily complicated, and pretending to be gourmet; Westside Lilo's is the opposite of that. The menu was simple. Because of the good tasting food, we decided to take desserts to go. They are made in-house. Inside felt like an old school Cafe. I spoke to one of the waitresses, and she had told me the owner had passed in January. You could see the love the waitress had for her and the sorrow in her eyes. Great little family owned Resturant. Mom and daughter have owned this location for 28 years I think is how long she said. Mom migrated from Germany in the 60's. The service was amazing. We got there just after they opened. And had a big group with us. They took so good care of use. Service was fast and food was out just as fast. Everything was very good. I had the biscuits and gravy eggs and potatoes. Was so good. Someone at our table had the huge cinnamon bun, you could feed 4 people with that thing it was so big. Just finished breakfast at Westside Lilo's Café. This was the best breakfast we've had in two weeks of travel on Route 66. The biscuits were fluffy and smothered in a perfect gravy. You can get either hashbrowns (fried to perfection) or "Those" Potatoes fried with onions and bell peppers. My coffee was constantly refilled. My husband said they have the best hot chocolate on ROur server Sherry was so sweet and attentive. They are known for their carrot cake. We were too full from breakfast so we bought 2 pieces to go! The family and I had lunch at Westside Lilo's Cafe yesterday while making our way to Sedona. The cafe is located in the tiny Route 66 hamlet of Seligman, Arizona that brand's itself as being the birthplace of Route 66. We arrived before 1. The cafe was pretty busy with what seemed like a good mix of tourists and locals. Believe me, you can tell the difference. The staff were very friendly. Probably the friendliest we've ever encountered in one of these touristy roadside establishments. I was really surprised at the amount of items offered on the menu for such a small place. My wife ordered the Blooming Onion for the table which is what Westside Lilo's Cafe is known first besides their carrot cake. For our mains kiddo and I shared the beef dip and the Mrs. ordered the Patty Melt. We ordered fries as a side for both. The last time I had a blooming onion was probably 30 years ago at Outback Steakhouse. Westside Lilo's Cafe reminded me how such a simple onion can be turned into a culinary masterpiece. Each sliver of onion was perfectly fried and seasoned. The dipping sauce had a nice tang to it that worked well with the seasoning. I could have just eaten the onion and been fulfilled but would have needed ton of breath mints. The portion size on the beef dip was perfect for sharing. It was also flavorful and the Au Jus was perfectly seasoned. Swiss cheese can be added for an extra cost. The Mrs. enjoyed her Patty Melt. It was hearty like I'd expect it to be. She ate half and took the rest to go. The fries were good, just lacked a bit of salt which was an easy fix. We ordered a piece of carrot cake to go. The portion size could easily serve four people. I'm not a fan of carrots in general so I passed on trying it but there were no complaints. read more

This restaurant is out of this world. From the service, to the food, to the cleanliness and friendliness. This spot was super clean first walking in. After our waiter took our orders and brought us water, food came out super fast and we all loved and ate all of our food. The bathrooms were super clean and the decorations in there make it top tier. Stopped by this cure little spot during our road trip. I was SICK of eating fast food for breakfast. I found this cafe on Yelp and it had good reviews, so we came. The food was delicious. I had the Locals Favorite with a side of bacon, and my honey had a custom omelette. The biscuits and gravy were made with love and you could taste it. Overall, We loved it all!
