Definitely worth a trip to Westwego LA! We picked up fresh shrimp, a sack of oysters, a dozen crabs, and a few pounds of alligator. They have it all, and price was a lot cheaper than grocery stores near the house. It was a fun experience and we will be going back soon. read more

I literally side eye folks complaining about $6 per pound for shrimp. Go to the Wharf in DC where it's $17 per pound and Bowie, MD where it's $72 for a half pound of #1's. So when I come, I only go to Ms. Dee at Dee's Seafood. Her products are fresh, of excellent quality and great prices. Mostly everyone has good stuff out there but I stick with the one who can get me what I want. Below are the biggest shrimp we've gotten so far from her at only $6lb and her crabs are always meaty. Coming from Michigan, the only way to find head-on shrimp like these is to find a seafood specialty counter and pay 30-40 bucks a pound (and those ain't gonna be this fresh!) The lady with the neon road-crew vest and a moderate Creole accent was a delight, and I was able to understand 80% of what she said. I bought 6 pounds of whites and used the heads and shells for shrimp stock. Probably the best I have ever made. Under 6 bucks a pound. I ran across some shrimp that were slightly smaller, slightly sad at Whole Foods later that same day. They were 15 bucks a pound. . You're stupid if you don't go here. read more

Fresh seafood galore! Westwego Shrimp Lot is known for their seafood because they have an abundance of it! There might have been over 20 market stalls lined up on the gravel parking lot. Some stalls were closed, we were told that there were no crabs for sale that day. Almost all of them sold shrimp, but there was also fresh fish and oysters. Not sure if all of them do but some accept credit cards. Gulf shrimp of all sizes dominates the market. The largest shrimp are the most expensive. Stopped by K&B Seafood Mart and spoke to Shelly. Friendly and helpful. Nice selection of fresh shrimp but they also sold boudin, fish, crab meat, oysters, gator and sausage. They ship anywhere in the United States and they can even package your purchase in a carryon box to take with you inside the plane. The shrimp boats were docked behind the market. Very cool place where everything here is fresh from the boat daily! We saw this place when we came for our swamp tour and stopped by after the tour. Love getting my sacks of crawfish and crabs from the shrimp lot. They always have the best prices when I go. The pickup process for reserving food is convenient and quick if you ever need something in advance. I've been going for years. I've had to try other places when demand for seafood is insane and I drag my feet too much but what I can say without a doubt is I have never had any dead mudbugs from shopping here! The other places always, always have lbs of dead mudbugs and they do not do anything to satisfy the customer. If I could eliminate my procrastinating ways I wouldn't go anywhere else. This was my worst experience in Louisiana at Amy's Seafood (stand towards the end) trying to celebrate the Mardi gras buying live seafood to be greeted with such disrespect . Distasteful customer service from nasty attitudes and unprofessionalism from the owner ,manager , and to staff. Why can't a person ask a simple question for my crabs to have both paws to escalate to an attitude from the employees to calling people out their names and pitching fits about putting crabs on ice. Management is very incompetent on handling unprofessional situations letting her employees get rowdy with customers raising their voices and threatening to fight customers on job site. These roadside seafood vendors are another reason why the locals say "the West Bank is the best bank". This is a dedicated lot that is an open market for local fishermen to sell today's catch. There are approximately 20 different stalls that you can browse. You won't see any freezers though, everything is on ice or still kicking. The seafood is fresh, and the prices are extremely competitive. This place is a wonderful example of the free enterprise system. Competition, supply, and demand drive the prices. We stopped by on a Sunday afternoon to score some fresh shrimp. While not all vendors were open because it was Sunday, there were still plenty of options to choose from. There were multiple stalls with shrimp in different sizes. We bought some beautiful 21/25 (count per lb) brown shrimp for $3.75 a pound. Crazy cheep, The downside (at least on this visit) was the place stinks. As soon as we got out of the car we were knocked downed by the stench of rotting seafood. Fresh seafood shouldn't smell, and I suspect the stench was coming from an overdue dumpster. Thankfully the smell was not noticeable at the opposite end of he lot. I've gotten use to this being a weekly stop now that I'm closer, and I can honestly say that I have need to go to the other side of the bridge for seafood now. So we visited this place last week and purchased a half sack of live oysters, several pounds of fresh shrimp and a couple of dozen live crabs. The oysters were great. My wife and I prepared "jacked up oysters " on our grill - yum, soooo good. Oysters shucked, grilled with pepper jack cheese, freshly fried bacon and cut into small bits to top the oysters with the cheese, garlic and butter. The fresh shrimp are excellent but the live crabs were somewhat disappointing as they weren't very full. There are several booths to buy from and it's best to stroll from one to another before buying. I recommend this place for fresh seafood. read more

New Orleans review: Giving my shoutout to Amy's Seafood. Anytime I drive to New Orleans, this stop is a must! As others have stated there are many different stalls luring you in to purchase some of the best gulf seafood. There is a distinctive taste between Louisiana gulf and Florida gulf shrimp. Maybe it's the colder, deeper waters. I choose Amy's because her stall always seem to be the freshest. The jumbo shrimp are $5.50 lb but they give a discount when order alot. I get 50 lbs or more of shrimp to bring back. Amy's also ships if you are unable to take the drive. Remember Westwego shrimp lot on your next visit to New Orleans! She also has aof shrimp and frozen catfish. 2) Sue's- I buy my Fresh Blue crabs from here. They also have shrimp and crabmeat (lump and claw) *Getting crab fingers is usually a hit or miss at both places. I usually buy 2 at a time so that I will always have a back-up incase their stock is low! read more

So I needed beaucoup crab for a family party a couple of weekends ago and I called around and it was $$ no matter where I looked. I asked over on the twitters for suggestions and someone said try the Shrimp Lot. So I decided a westbank adventure was just what I needed... The directions from Google maps are junk. You're looking for the corner of Louisiana and Westbank Expressway. If you see the big Westwego carved sign on the neutral ground...the shrimp lot is on the other side. The lot is comprised of individual businesses set up in lean-tos, sheds, and buildings. Each person has a different selection and different prices. When I was there on a Friday afternoon about half the businesses were occupied. There were a few wholesalers mixed in with the fresh catch items. Prices for shrimp and crabs were excellent and this would be a great choice to buy for your next big boil. The already picked crab? It was only about a $1 less than my go to spot in Old Jefferson. Went to this place for the first time today. Probably NOLA's best kept secret for inexpensive seafood. It is in westwego but definitely worth the trip. Not only is all the seafood very fresh and probably in the water earlier that day. But the selection and prices are far better than any air conditioned seafood market... even at the Florida beaches. There are so many stalls that they can probably accommodate any size order throughout all of them. I have found myself going to Ruth Ann's because they were so friendly the first few times I went. And their prices are as good as anyone else there. This past time I got a half sack of oysters for about $49 with tax. And some of these oysters were monsters! I am sure some of these spot will gut or fillet your fish. But fully expect everything to be the way it came out of the water. read more

The crabs were great quality and I'm used to small town prices, but the lady cut a deal and probably beat what I could have done elsewhere. Will be back as often as I have time to cook.
