If you are looking for excellent fried fish- you found the spot. We stopped by while on vacation in Edisto, and were able to snag a seat outside on a lovely evening. The service was great! I ordered the fried shrimp with the house made fries- which they call "raw fries". Kids menu options were great, and we ordered them some cute drinks too. Their house made boiled peanuts were perfection- I could eat those for days. My hubby had the flounder which was excellent. Portions were huge, and everything was fresh. The service is excellent. Whaley's use to be a gas station back in the day so it's now a pub like place and great place to eat. The Braves were playing today (Cardinals)so the bar was quite into the game! That's always fun hearing guys and gals discuss a game. Hubby had a gigantic burger. The food was amazing. The grilled mahi mahi was worth the wait. It was cooked perfectly. While the sushi nachos are a challenge to eat, they tasted delicious. The seafood bisque was also good! My niece suggests adding Tabasco to the condiments available. I was bummed out there wasn't a tshirt to purchase. I like to get a tshirt from every state I visit and hadn't gotten one in SC. We leave tomorrow at 6am :( Maybe the owner would be willing to ship me one if I purchase it if they order more in the future. I'd suggest taking them out of the case if they're not available. Great food and service! Over a few days time we had many of their specialty drinks that were great. For the food as a whole our group had ahi sushi nachos that we loved, mahi bites, pulled pork sandwiches, prime rib sandwich, steamed shrimp, shrimp and grits, the big ugly, and the big salad. This place was very good. It felt home-y and the interior made you feel like you were eating inside your house, and I loved it. Our waitress was so sweet and welcoming and she came to our needs immediately. The food was absolutely to go for, I had the Sushi Nachos which were surprisingly the best fusion Asian food I've had yet, and I hadn't expected it to be so good. The tuna was like sushi, and it was sort of cooked so it is still sushi and I thought it was very delicious. The salad is amazing, and I love the parmesan they give you, I even asked for another thing of it and took it home with me because it was just chefs kiss! This place is amazing, I'm in love with it. I also had the shrimp and crab bisque, and it was creamy with chunks of sherry, crab, and shrimp, and when I say creamy, it was creamy, and good! Now, it is fishy but it is a seafood soup, and I'm not too big on fishy tastes, but it actually grew on me, so I recommend just trying it out because it's like a signature. Back to the Suchi Nachos, get those too. I absolutely love those. And also back to the waitress, who was so nice and sweet and so so friendly! I loved her personality! There aren't a ton of quality restaurants on Edisto (at least by Charleston standards), but I think Whaley's is one of the better options. First of all, it's definitely a no frills kind of place. They brag about having the oldest bartender on the island ("Hope you're not in a hurry, because he isn't" they let you know on the menu). I've been here a couple of times and found the speed of service to be pretty typical, despite their warnings to the contrary. The first time I went, we split the sushi nachos with ahi tuna, which were surprisingly tasty for such a divey looking place. I recently tried the big salad with grilled shrimp, which was also pretty delicious and chock full of good stuff like romaine lettuce, avocado, and bacon (among other things). The shrimp were excellently seasoned and cooked. My dining partner tried a combo of fried oysters and fried flounder with raw fries, and they were fried to golden perfection. I was especially a fan of the fried oysters! If Whaley's was in another city, I'd probably lower the star count, but for Edisto, it definitely deserves this rating and my repeat business! read more

A tad disappointed. I ordered the shrimp and grits, which is my favorite food. It had little flavor , but the shrimp was good and fresh. Didn't much care for the gravy, though. Our waitress left us sitting waiting for our food, and was hard to catch to let her know we wanted another beer while we we're waiting on the food. In the time all the tables around us sat down, got their food and paid their tab, we were still waiting. We jokingly said " you gotta be quick" to catch her to get any attention. read more

If you watch the show Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, Whaleys fits the dive category. It is small and a local hangout. The food is good but be prepared for a wait. It's not a fast Food joint. If you get there late in the evening you'll probably end up waiting for a table. The main thing the food was good especially the shrimp and flounder. read more

We ate here for the first time tonight. We walked right in with no wait. The cocktails are amazing (Sweet Tart, especially). My husband and son had the wings and they enjoyed them, I had the buffalo chicken sandwich which was delicious, and our youngest (5years old) had grilled cheese and apple sauce- he can be picky and he ate well. I've never written a review before, but my last experience at Whaleys on Edisto left such a lasting bad impression that I felt the need to share it. I can't imagine that we are the only ones who have received this treatment. On the morning of April 18, 2024 I recommended Whaley's to a group visiting the island for the day. They were trying to decide between two restaurants they'd read about and Whaley's was one of them. I wholeheartedly endorsed Whaley's. Later that day, my sister and I who visit Edisto every year, went to lunch there. There was only one couple eating outside when we arrived and sat down. The waitress serving them went in and out 3 times waiting on them with no acknowledgment that we were there. She actively ignored us as we were seated in her line of vision every time she turned around from their table. My sister waved the third time and she ignored us again. We looked at each other really astonished! My sister got up went inside and ordered a carry out, which took less time than the time we waited to be acknowledged by the waitress. The restaurant wasn't that busy and a simple "I'll be with you soon" or any recognition would have sufficed. I love their food (hence the two stars), but sadly we will not be returning to Whaley's nor will I recommend them again. My hope is that the owner reads this and will talk to the waitress involved. She needs to know how her behavior affects his business. read more

This place has so much to offer and would be an excellent dive in an off the beaten path part of the Lowcountry. The seats of the booths are all ripped, memorabilia covers the wall, TV's are everywhere, the floors are rustic, single page menu with a cool story about how the place opened and the oldest bartender in South Carolina - all of these things contribute to that awesome dive bar experience. And then you receive your food. For the prices you are paying, the quality and portion sizes are not meshing together. The flounder is small, the portion size of the shrimp is underwhelming, the hamburgers are pre made frozen hockey puck/Bubba Burgers, etc. The bill for a family of four with two kids under 8 years old was $76 and change. And this was for lunch. I'm all for supporting local businesses and mom and pop's but come on, these prices are ridiculous. read more

This is or favorite place on Edisto Island has been for years! However it's not posh or fancy! The decor is eclectic but being lovers of Edisto it's self we love the old pictures, beer signs, and fish up on the walls! The reason we yelp however is about the food and that here is awesome! Yes it's a dive, but no matter what we have it's great! And the beer and drinks are great! Late night so we just wanted a night cap, but enjoyed the Sushi nachos great with yummy wasabi sauce! The stuffed shrimp was great as well! Perfectly cooked with an awesome dill dipping sauce! Page our server was awesome as well as always there Paul the bartender! If you want to sit down at a restaurant on Edisto then I would recommend Whaley's. Sushi Nachos for $9 or so were worth it. You get 4 large wontons with a nice piece of Ahi Tuna on it. The sauce on top made it perfect. I would go here just for this. If it isn't enough food for you then grab a cup of their shrimp and crab chowder and you have a great meal for under $15 on Edisto. The spinach salad is also very good with a delicous dressing. Easily enough for a meal and then maybe still in need of a box. The French Fries are very crispy and I believe to be the best in the area. I can eat the fries without sauce. I am not a French Fry fan but these were actually tasty. The only downside to Whaley's is the lack of a craft beer. read more
