I spent the first few minutes feeling mildly self conscious before realizing that nobody cared: the crowd covered a real range, and the restaurant had the confidence to feel elevated without making anyone perform for admission. It is a family owned business located on historic King Street approximately a block north of Marion Square and a block west of the Charleston Visitor Center. With their highly prized steak is an elegant ambiance. And the higher prices expected in an upscale restaurant. It is an exquisite choice to celebrate a special occasion. The special occasion that we celebrated here was starting off our Charleston vacation with a magnificent dinner. We happened to find Hall's Chophouse by walking along King Street. When we paused to look at the outside menu, a lady who seemed to be a local, told us that they have the best steak. Meanwhile, the place were giving off such good vibes that we walked inside. From the time that we walked inside the historic building, the service was phenomenal. After we were seated, the waitress explained the different steaks and menu items. Throughout the meal she would make sure that we were having a great experience. What made the service extraordinarily memorable was when the owner Mr. Hall checked up on us. How often do you see that? And after we finished the meal and were walking onto King Street, Mr. Hall thanked us for visiting. That gave a very good last impression. We sat in the room that is to the right of the main room. I would describe it as elegant with a historic Charleston vibe. The noise level and lighting was perfect. So was the food. Hall's Chophouse is more than stellar steak. I could attest to this from their shrimp and grits. I was more in the mood for seafood than steak. Perusing the dinner menu, I saw shrimp and grits. It costs $38. This was the first time that I ever had shrimp and grits. What an introduction to the Low Country favorite. It was out of this world. This wasn't filler shrimp. They were jumbo shrimp and lots of them. The tasso ham gravy, onions, peppers, and stone cold grits melted in my mouth. The dish was a lavish portion. Preceding the meal, they served a basket of hot bread. With the food, I drank a Coke. The way they serve it is that the Waitress opens a 16 ounce bottle and pours it in a glass (not bottomless). That ended up being the best part of the night. Both bartenders were absolutely amazing. One was incredibly knowledgeable about wine, while the other knew everything about spirits, so we ended up getting a mini education on all kinds of drinks and even did a little tasting. It made the whole experience so much fun and interactive. We eventually settled on a bottle of red wine and shared a filet mignon. I highly recommend ordering the potatoes because whoever prepares them is seriously talented. They were thinly sliced and stacked into this beautiful cake-like structure that completely melted in your mouth. Between chatting with the bartenders and the people sitting next to us, we ended up staying much longer than planned simply because we were enjoying ourselves so much. The steaks were cooked very well which was great (it is a steakhouse), but honestly just tasted like pepper. The bernaise sauce was watery, cold and flavorless. The Brussels had some flavor, but nothing to knock your socks off and pretty much the same with the mushrooms. Honestly, the star of the show were the truffle fries. Crispy, lots of flavor and hot. You obviously have higher expectations when coming into an establishment such as Oak and sadly it let me down.
