Celebrated my birthday here. The service was amazing. The Chef came out and wished me a Happy Birthday. The special she made was scrumptious! The staff is so friendly. I would recommend this restaurant.

My husband's name happens to be Billy Hall too, so we figured we had to check it out. We walked in and asked to be put on the waitlist for seats at the back bar. Even while we were waiting, the bartenders came by multiple times to check on us and brought us drinks while we stood along the wall. Then the owner, Billy Hall himself came over, shook our hands, and welcomed us. I absolutely love that kind of old-school customer service, it feels rare these days. The vibe was classic steakhouse: classy, lively without feeling pretentious. The drinks were strong, well made, and exactly what we were looking for. Once we got seats at the bar, we ordered the bison nachos and the steak martini as a snack. Both were so delicious. The nachos were loaded with flavor but somehow still stayed crispy and never got soggy. I was honestly in heaven eating them. Great people-watching, attentive bartenders, excellent service, and a fun atmosphere. We had such a great time here and can see why it's been a Charleston favorite for so long.

Well, a friend is in town visiting, and wanted to go to dinner. We're both carnivores, so steak was the order of the day. I did pick a spot off the beaten path, but at the last minute snagged a reservation for Halls, and figured I'd "check off the box." I'm extremely happy I did. Last year I cursed myself by going to The Oak, which was like Outback Steakhouse 2.0; Halls (at least in my experience) was top tier dining at its finest in terms of presentation, service, hospitality, and overall vibe. Yes, it's incredibly loud in there, but that's life. My friend ordered the filet and I, the dry aged ribeye (with black truffle butter accompaniment), both medium rare. Lobster macaroni and cheese and the roasted jalapeño corn, along with the crab cakes and onion soup. The ribeye had fantastic flavor, though I secretly wished I grabbed the NY strip instead. No real reason, but it's a genius marketing move to display the cuts of meat to the table before ordering. That's what screwed me up. But, to be fair, I do that everywhere I eat ("maybe I should have ordered that"). Cannot say enough about the service. A+. Along with our incredible server, no less than two members of management came to our table asking if we needed anything, and that was in a full house. And they all seemed GENUINELY interested in making sure we were happy and satisfied - I didn't feel any of them were going through the motions. I don't usually drink, but I polished off two pineapple martinis and probably could have had five more. Also, I have to note we NEVER felt rushed - it's a hectic room, but the chaos is under control. Totally relaxed and comfortable. Halls Chophouse absolutely delivered for me, and I will certainly be back without a doubt. If you're staying downtown with limited time, I'd definitely recommend it if you can grab a reservation. And, after experiencing Halls, give the little guys a try down the line.

She suggested a great wine and even brought a sample to try prior to us making our selection. We started with a few appetizers. The fried calamari was not very impressive as it looked like store-bought calamari rings, and it wasn't real hot. The oysters Rockefeller did not have a lot of flavor and again not very hot kind of lukewarm in temperature. Not sure I would get either of these appetizers again. We chose a wedge salad, which was very good. Had nice chunks of blue cheese and a nice creamy dressing. Everything is served à la carte. The small sides are enough for two people to split. Where is the large is big enough for four people. I chose the bone in pork chop, which was pretty good, but the presentation was not all that great. My side was the stuffed mushrooms from the appetizer menu and they were delicious. My husband had the ocean 17, which he really enjoyed great flavor on the scallops and grouper he ordered a side of brussels sprouts, I thought they had a little too much balsamic in them. For dessert, my husband had the pecan pie with vanilla ice cream. It was served warm and it was delicious. I had the strawberry cake which was amazing. Felt like the prices were a little high, but the service was great.

I was able to make a reservation through Yelp, and although our reservation was pretty late at 8 PM, we walked in and luckily grabbed seats at the bar instead. That ended up being the best part of the night. Both bartenders were absolutely amazing. One was incredibly knowledgeable about wine, while the other knew everything about spirits, so we ended up getting a mini education on all kinds of drinks and even did a little tasting. It made the whole experience so much fun and interactive. We eventually settled on a bottle of red wine and shared a filet mignon. I highly recommend ordering the potatoes because whoever prepares them is seriously talented. They were thinly sliced and stacked into this beautiful cake-like structure that completely melted in your mouth. Between chatting with the bartenders and the people sitting next to us, we ended up staying much longer than planned simply because we were enjoying ourselves so much. I honestly don't have a single bad thing to say about this place. It's more than just dinner -- it's an experience, and I highly recommend checking it out.

Next, the staff. They were exceptionally nice. Friendly, polite, courteous and helpful. Absolutely 5 stars. The food. We ordered the fried pickle appetizer, a shrimp dinner and the special, a 5oz fried grouper sandwich. The pickles came out fresh, hot, nicely cooked in a perfect coating. Came with ranch dressing. Would totally order them again. 5 stars as they were perfect. The shrimp dinner was also very good. Nice portion of again... perfectly coated, perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked. The side of coleslaw was fine. No rating as it was neutral. The fries, the side we chose, were ok. The usual frozen crinkle cut fries. They were hot and cooked well. But frozen makes them a 3 star. I personally was not a fan of the hush puppies as I'm typically not anyway. My partner said they were delicious. Going by her enjoyment, 3.5 stars. The grouper sandwich special. Presentation was good. Good bun, fresh leaf lettuce and fresh cut tomato. The fish was again, nicely coated. Unfortunately, it came out dry. A little tough to chew. My partner tried it and said the same thing. Fortunately, the great server offered to have a new one made for me. I really didn't want it so she replaced it with their fried shrimp! No headache. No nasty looks or comments. Just a server that wanted to make sure we had a good dining experience. She did. The bill arrived and the food prices were good. Taxes are a bit high but no fault of the place. We were disappointed to see a service charge of 3% for CC fee. Typical nowadays but still never happy to see it. Overall this is a place that I would absolutely recommend and if ever passing through here again, we will stop and eat here. 4.75 stars.

We frequently dine at many of the higher-end restaurants in downtown Charleston and Mount Pleasant,…read moreso we arrived with high expectations, especially given this restaurant's connection to the Halls group. The dining room is beautiful, and the ambiance is excellent. Unfortunately, the service did not match the quality level or price point of the restaurant. When entrées range from $65-$70 for fish, $80+ for steaks, and side dishes approach $14 or more, guests reasonably expect an elevated and attentive dining experience. Throughout the evening, our server seemed rushed and disengaged. Despite our efforts to be friendly and conversational, interactions felt brief and transactional. A drink order was delivered incorrectly, and rather than improving as the meal progressed, the service became increasingly impersonal. We never felt particularly welcomed or valued as guests. A special night out with a $300-$400 check should feel memorable for the right reasons. While the food and atmosphere were good, the overall experience fell short of what we have come to expect from restaurants operating in this category and at this price level. We are glad we gave it a try, but in the future we'll likely choose other Charleston-area restaurants that deliver a more polished and hospitality-focused experience when entertaining family and friends from out of town.
