    Double Meat Whataburger
    John D.

What to the Chase Normally, I'm not into fast food nor doing fast food reviews, but Whataburger® (WAB) has been on my radar for a few years after an incident amongst two friends. Normally, these two guys are the nicest dudes ever, but somehow, the discussion of who made the better burger between In-N-Out® (INO) or WAB--and all hell broke loose. They nearly came to blows as the rest of us had to quickly eliviate the situation and separate them. Ironically, the TX boy was jocking INO, and the Cali boy was touting WAB--go figure! So this always had me wondering who really was better: INO or WAB?? Well, I was finally able to try WAB for the first time on our recent visit to New Mexico to answer the question for myself. History: *Both INO & WAB have been around for years, with INO being a smidge older (1948 vs 1950). But they're both still iconic to their regions and have signage and colors that travelers can spot from a mile away. Winner: Draw Locations: *WAB has over 890 locations primarily in the South and Desert Southwest, while INO has 265 locations primarily (69%) in Cali, but has started to migrate east with a few locations in NV, AZ, CO, and even TX. Winner: WAB Service: *INO *always* has world-class customer service no matter how many different locations I've visited. My one lone WAB experience the service was fine. It's better than most fast food places, but nowhere on the level of INO. Winner: INO Menu: *INO's Menu is essentially burgers, fries, and shakes/sodas, while WAB has chicken sandwiches, chicken fingers, salads, pies and even breakfast. Yes, INO has the vaunted "secret menu," but it's not going to pull a chicken strip out of thin air. Winner: WAB Burger: *Both chains claim to use "fresh, never frozen" beef, but in my opinion, INO's burger is 10× better quality. The beef tastes fresh and juicy, while WAB's burgers reminded me of something I'd get in elementary school at the cafeteria. Plus, why do their buns look like they've been sat on?? 0_o Winner: INO Fries: *I've made no secrets in the past that INO's fries are trash; they can be salvaged and made edible thru some secret menu tricks (e.g., well-done, animal-style, etc.) but straight-up they're terrible. WAB's fries are doing a decent job trying to mimic the Clown's amazing fries, but they're just a bit short of that golden standard. Winner: WAB Shakes: *Both have strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla, but WAB has seasonal flavors included, and their shakes seem more like real ice cream than INO. Plus, WAB has HUGE sized shakes for when you really want to pack on the pounds. And, yes, I realize INO has the option to combine the shake flavors (e.g., chocolate-strawberry, Neopolitan, etc.) but gimme a break. Winner: WAB Conclusion: Hmm there really is no clear winner in my book. On the one hand, if you're judging **PURELY** on burgers alone, then INO is the clear Champ. But on an overall experience, WAB gets the slight edge for the menu diversity and superior fries and shakes. So, the answer is that it depends on how important the burger is to you. Personally, I'd pick INO as I'd rather have the superior burger and I can deal with the mediocre fries and shake, but that's just me.

Patty Melt, Spicy Chicken Sandwich, and Onion Rings.

Welcome to the fast food chain of Texas and it's surrounding areas. It's essentially the In-N-Out of the Southern US. The last time I visited a Whataburger, I didn't remember it much so knew I had to come back to try. We ordered a Patty Melt ($6.64), Spicy Chicken Sandwich ($5.09), and Onion Rings ($2.84). We also got the Jalepeno Ranch sauce to go with it. Wow, their sauces come in a huge container, which makes sense why they charge 35cents for them. I have to say that the Patty Melt was an absolute favorite with the juicy patty, melted cheese, grilled onions and creamy pepper sauce sandwiched between two Texas toast --so, so good! The onion rings were also nice and crunchy in a beer batter. The chicken sandwich was the only item that fell short as it was rather dry, but the sauce helped. Whataburger is a staple fast food joint. You can easily see why the Patty Melt is an all-time favorite. If you make it here between 11pm-11am, make sure to get their honey biscuits! Also love that this place is open 24/7 too.

Stopped by while visiting a friend to try out what everyone raves about, (we are California In and Out fans), and we were not disappointed. We tried breakfast and lunch. If we had one closer we would be regulars.

Whataburger fries: thin, crispy, and good for fast food. Rate them a "B."

Every so often I just got to have a good fast food burger and fries. When I do I head over to the popular Whataburger on Telshor. I usually order the double meat Whataburger with cheese and green chile. The fries are crispy and thin. These are good fast food fries. Rate them about a "B." The burger has a nice bun (not great.) the meat patties are good but not very juicy...but this is fast food and these are obviously not gourmet burgers. The burger was rounded off with lettuce, tomato, and onions. Rate the burger a "B+" for a fast food burger. It is a real good fast food burger. The service at the counter today was efficient and pleasant. Drinks are self serve. After about eight minutes they delivered the burger and fries to my table with a box of condiments to choose from. The price for the combo was great for this day and age. All in all, this was a most enjoyable fast food experience. I'll certainly return now and then.

Pulled in to Whataburger to see if they could do a Keto friendly meal. They made us a double patty with double cheese and veggies in a tray. The burgers were hot and juicy with a nice grilled flavor. We were soooooo happy! They blew Burger Kings Keto Burger patties out of the water for the same price! Great place! Clean! Friendly service! Thank you

We had actually tried out a new place, and were gravely disappointed. Two words, "fake" "meat". So, yeah, with the nastiness of the previous place leaving us yearning for a good burger (other than those from home!), we were in the area after a long day of sports nearby, and decided to grab a couple of burgers. Again, it's not fast food. There were some disappointments, but not deal breakers... 1) The burger patty on my burger was about 2" x 3" It was pretty d TINY!! But...at least it was real meat, lol!! And THAT is what we went there for. The bun? These are homemade and usually very good. The top bun on my burger was hard as a rock. It was either stale to begin with, or microwaved after it was toasted. Not too much of a deal cus I'm low carb anyway, though I had planned on breaking my diet for what I already knew would be a tasty house made bun. So, I wasn't too put off, by having an inedible bun. As it was, the under bun was perfect, and toasted with garlic.... and I DID break my diet for this, which I ate by itself. This bread is tdf! So there's that! Since I planned on breaking my diet anyway, I went ahead and order fries. The fries were not greasy like they used to be years ago. But they didn't seem fresh either, like they were years ago. Not soggy, not bad. I'll let it pass. We don't like seasonings on our fries so we got them "naked", and they were actually pretty good that way. No salt, nothing (though I did, later on pour on some gooey cheese for some nice cheese fries). The burger itself was good. I got the mushroom swiss burger. I'm not so sure that the white goo on my burger was swiss though. I've never seen swiss melt into almost nothing like that before. Perhaps it was grated? Still, never seen gooey almost liquid swiss before. I think it was either "swiss cheese product" (white american cheese), or provolone or something. Would have been nice, like tdf if it had been real swiss cheese. The grilled onions, fresh meat, fresh bottom bun (lol) made this burger. Also, again, I appreciate that they put garnishments on the side. I just ate them straight up, including the giant leaf of lettuce. A good overall meal. So even if Voodoo disappoints in some areas, there's always a treasure somewhere, and it was an enjoyable meal. Take away from this... wish the buns weren't stale or microwaved. Wish the burger patty was a decent size, not slider sized. Wish the swiss cheese was real swiss cheese. Not even gonna say I wish prices were lower, that's a given. My burger with fries was over $15.

They make the burgers, fries, & onion rings to order. So it all takes time!! Be patient. The burgers have that great smash crust on them but still flavorful & juicy. It's a very basic burger. Lettuce, onion, mayo, mustard, ketchup (I think?), & cheese but no bacon! Wasn't upset about that, totally understandable, the bacon would slow things down even more. Fries, curly fries, & onion rings. Pop, water, tea, & sports drinks. All in a fridge & nothing in a fountain machine. Chips if you want them. The difference between the regular burger k the great burger is the regular burger is basically a slider. Again, still reasonable. Would definitely come back. Make sure you double check the order though. My colleague asked for no mustard & her had mustard on it but an easy fix. No issues. Also, looks like you should be able to place an order online soon. This is an old school kind of place where they take orders by hand in a notebook. Honestly, loved to see it. Something so lovely & quaint about it. Come by and check it out if you haven't.
