What's Brewin', you ask? Fabosh breakfast sandwiches and limitless flavor options fo yo coffee. Neil does a great job with this place, turning an otherwise tricky space (long, narrow) into a well-oiled breakfast assembly line that keeps the hungry traffic moving toward the register. The fact that you can call ahead and have your order waiting for you upon arrival doesn't hurt either. I have found service here to be pretty consistent. Neil always greets his patrons with a smile and knows my mother by name and order, which I know she appreciates. His staff is quick and to-the-point, not a lot of small talk going on, which is okay because this place is typically slammed. In terms of the food... #getinmybelly. I usually get an everything bagel with turkey, egg, and extra cheese. One reviewer commented that the eggs are microwaved - I think it's one of those turbo ovens, but either way, how else are they supposed to cook your breakfast without holding up the entire operation? If you want a griddle meal, hit up Depot Diner. That's their gig. Microwaved or not, I have never had an issue with the eggs, bagels, or cheese. The turkey is a TOUCH salty for my taste, but I still order it with abandon (I live on the edge, I know). They also have a ginormous menu board with lunch as well, but I've never tried it. Prices are very reasonable, which is good because it's cash only. I think the same disgruntled reviewer pointed out that they only take cash, but that's pretty standard operating procedure for locally-owned breakfast joints as far as I can tell. My old spot in Medford had the same set up and they've been around 30 years. It just means to come prepared. There are too many Dunkin' Donuts franchises around Beverly and it is getting to be quite annoying to have so many of one bad place! From What's Brewin' Cafe i usually get the bacon egg and cheese sandwich. It is pretty darn good. My beau likes the prociutto (?), provolone and egg sandwich. He says its great. The iced coffee always tastes fresh and there are a variety of herbal teas and other drinks. The place has lunch but I have yet to try any of their soups or sandwiches or salads for lunch. I heart this place. It's a great small, family-run coffee/sandwich shop that makes you never want to go to Dunkin Donuts again. I know someone else mentioned something similar, but it's small-time places like this that make you want to abandon the huge franchise craptime places forever. I don't know if it's the prosciutto they buy or what, but something about this breakfast sandwich is magic. I get it with a wheat bagel, but you can get it on just about anything you want. That's what I love about this place... you take their idea and build upon it yourself. That's the best. Everything is excellent for the most part. They have great coffee. The mocha lattes are way too delicious. Get them without sugar, unless you like things super sweet. I used to work with someone who swore by the "shot in the dark" coffee. All types of sandwiches are good here because they are made with love. The salads are salads. They're good; I just don't have anything remarkable to say. Please get the chocolate-dipped biscotti when they have them. Enjoy the muffin tops (which I find are also super sweet, but good). The bagel with cream cheese and tomato brings you to a world of delicious splendor. I think the worst day I had in 2007 was the day I was craving a breakfast sandwich and they were closed. I've been hoping to find a Northshore stand-in for MaryLou's. This place isn't it - but it's decent. There's a fairly large variety of flavored coffee, I've had a couple that were OK (Mocha something or other and Banana Split) and one (Cinnamon Sticky Bun) that was just down right gross. Still, the bagels and breakfast sandwiches are fresh and always steaming hot, and the counter staff is friendly and efficient. During our last Sunday visit, the guy who prepared our order passed along a coffee card (the standard buy 9 coffees get your tenth free) whatever. The thing is, if you buy more than one coffee at a time - say a couple sharing a tab - they only count it as one. I don't even care about these cards. I'll probably lose it or forget to use it anyway, but this just seems dumb to me. read more

Today was my first time in a long time grabbing my morning coffee from "Whats Brewin' Cafe". Honestly, I never write reviews unless I feel completely blown away. This morning wasn't that great for me, lots of stress. The lovely blonde girl taking orders at the register had the best personality and that alone turned my day around. She was cheery, and very kind. I got an iced mocha/raspberry, and a bacon, egg and cheese on an onion bagel..For someone who is fairly new to frequenting downtown Bev (I just started a new job Mon right around the corner) I have tried a different coffee shop everyday. I read a review of What's Brewin' Cafe here on Yelp and vowed to check it out the next time I found myself in Beverly. Luckily for me, it was easy to find (near the end of Cabot St.) and it wasn't busy at all so I was able to peruse the menu and get to interact with the man behind the counter. The numerous flavors they offer for lattes is just amazing. Crazy flavor combos that I wouldn't have thought up in a million years. And the price, at just under $4, is reasonable. The drinks are 1 size, and that size would equal a large at most places. I tried the iced butterscotch mocha and it was so sweet- I felt like I was about to go into sugar shock halfway through! As a crazed caffeine addict, it was not the strongest drink that I've had; I think those flavored lattes are more about the sweet flavors rather than the amount of caffeine. I didn't try any of the sandwiches, but had I had more time (and more money on me since it's cash only), I definitely would have. They had a large variety, and the prices were decent. The man behind the counter was cute, and very engaging- which is always a bonus! My only complaint is the fact they are cash only. I don't know many people who carry more than a few dollars these days, especially if you're a tourist. The sign was not displayed very prominently so a person could be waiting in a long line before noticing it. All in all though, the coffee was amazing. What's really great is all of their coffee and latte selections and they're the most friendly place I've been to. This place is a hidden gem. I grew up in Beverly my whole life, and I always knew their coffees were amazing. Lately, I've discovered how delish their breakfast sandwiches are as well. I actually drive from Saugus to Beverly for coffee and a sandwich. One thing I do have to say is their flavored lattes are super sweet. For me, I love it. But if you are in it more for the coffee I would stick to their regular coffees. Will be back soon :). read more

2/14/18 updated review. In all of the reviews I've done this is the first time I am coming back to knock off a star. As mentioned in my previous review it's not easy to come here with an infant (parking/stroller). But today is Valentine's Day and I thought I would treat myself. I get baby out the door and in car, park a block away, get baby in stroller, and make my way down Cabot (no small feat here). I'm so excited for my latte and egg sandwich only to be greeted by a we are closed for Valentine's Day sign?!?!?! Are you kidding me.... it's Valentine's Day not Christmas or Thanksgiving! You are a coffee shop. You close early... plenty of time to celebrate. I'm sure you were doing something nice for your employees or self here, but come on. Nothing gets my panties in a bunch like a business changing hours when it's not expected. I'm honestly so miffed after all the effort to get here that I don't think I will be back. ------- I stopped by What's Brewin after an appointment I had this past Monday not far from here. I have wanted to try this place for awhile. My hesitancy is I have a newborn and toddler and am rarely out alone so parking is an issue. It's also not a place you can really hang out in with your kids as it is quite small. When I walked in I was greeted warmly and from there I knew I wanted to love this place. I got a banana cream half decaf latte and it was heaven! Best latte in all of Beverly! If I could come here everyday I would. I ordered two egg croissant sandwiches to go as they only had two kinds of bagels left due to oven issues:( I love croissant sandwiches but tend not to order them to go as they don't usually travel well. To my surprise they actually held up quite well! They were a little chewy but not soggy. I love that they used real egg and it was not greasy at all. I can't wait to come back again. This is 100% my favorite place to come for breakfast. They have the best bagels around!! Kevin and Lindsay are both so nice and they know your order the second you walk in. I had to only give this place 4 stars though because recently it has been closed so much, multiple days a week. I went there 3 straight days in a row and closed every time. This is a very yummy place. They have a zillion flavered latte drinks, crazy ones. I've only had a couple of them so far but they are dead on with what they taste like. Their sandwiches are top notch, but I've actually noticed my favorite thing to get is just a toasted bagel w/ cream cheese. For some reason they can toast something better than everyone else. super crispy outside soft and chewy inside. And are these Bagel World bagels?? They seem to be, which is great, cause those are the best you can get. cash only so be prepared. The guys there are pretty nice despite their punk looks. Food and coffee is great. Customer service sucks since COVID. I understand following guidelines due to the pandemic, but rather than politely directing people to wear their mask and avoid loitering, they were rude. Mostly the girl with the glasses at the cash register. She consistently talked shit out loud about various customers and honestly it drove my business with What's Brewin away, as well as the rest of the people in there and the people they forced to move away from the front of the building for "loitering without a mask on," but they were outside and far enough away from the entrance. I'm mad I never knew about this place until now. The lattes are AMAZING, especially if you're a sweet tooth like myself. They have so many creative flavors that it's tough to choose just one. Based on other reviews, I went with the Milky Way iced latte and it did not disappoint. I'd give 5 stars for the delicious drink selections and the customer service. The owner is extremely friendly and kind, and he greets customers by name which I love. The inside is very small and it is cash only which is why I gave it four stars. But a positive about cash only is that the prices are fair and reasonable!! I also ordered a bagel with egg, tomato, and cheese. It was good but not the best bagel I've ever had. I've gone to What's Brewin for the LAST time this past weekend. I've been back and forth with this place over the last 5 years. The thing that would always get me in the door was their breakfast sandwiches, which are both the best and cheapest in town. But due to the arrogant owner, and his terrible, over sweetened and over creamed coffee, I am done! Over the years I've been somewhat of a regular and have tried a good amount of their offerings. Mostly for feeling guilted into doing so. If you take the bait and go in ONLY for one of their awesome breakfast sandwiches at what seems to be a too-good-to-be-true price, you'll undoubtedly be asked, "what ELSE can I get for you???" (in a tone that eerily suggests that there should be an "else"). I'm a sucker, and I always knew I was getting a great deal on the sandwich, so I would usually take a baked good to go... They sell lots of homemade baked goods, muffins, cake slices, cookies, etc. All of which are very good... However, I get the feeling what he's really trying to sell is his coffee. Which is TERRIBLE. If you want a regular coffee with cream and sugar, ask him to go easy on both. If you don't, your coffee will be nearly undrinkable. But back to my point about the arrogance of that guy, if you dare ask him to take it easy on the cream and sugar, be prepared for some passive aggressiveness, and a coffee that has almost NO cream and NO sugar in it. It's all or nothing with this guy. If you're not familiar with this place, you cannot fix your coffee yourself. They don't put out cream or sugar for their customers, they fix it for you. You cannot win. Over the years I've witnessed plenty of "awkward" moments between other customers and the owner. Which, at first, always caught me by surprise, because for the most part the guy is pretty pleasant, always thanking you for coming in, saying good morning when you do... but make a claim that they got your order wrong or ask him to go easy on the sugar and YOU'RE the a__hole. This guy is the soup nazi of coffee shops... He IS the coffee nazi! So why did I finally decide to call it quits, you ask? This past weekend I stopped at What's Brewin and arrived at 8:03am. I had a long list of errands that morning and needed to get started asap. The shop says it opens at 8:00am. When I went to open the front door at 3 minutes past, it was locked. The owner and his cashier were both standing behind the counter, leaning against it, and engaged in what appeared to be a very light conversation. They both turned, looked right at me, and immediately turned around and pretended not to have seen me. Normally this wouldn't be an issue and I would just simply wait. But on this particular day, the temperature outside was hovering around 15 degrees F. My extremities were numb from the cold, it's AFTER the time they claim to be open, they're standing right there... walk around the counter and open the the door for me! Even if the conversation you're having is private, acknowledge the fact that I'm standing there in the cold and that you're at least in the process of letting me in. I stood there for another 5 minutes, visibly freeing my a__ off, while they occasionally glanced my way while continuing to ignore me. There was also a day a few years back when I stopped in with a friend to get some breakfast sandwiches. We had been walking around town for a while and had stopped much earlier to get coffee at Dunkin Donuts. I wasn't thinking and was holding my empty coffee cup when we walked in. When the owner saw the empty cup from Dunkin Donuts in my hand, the whole place came to a screeching halt! He yelled at us to "get out!" ...and "read the SIGN!"... which we had missed on the way in. Oh yes, there is a SIGN, that says you're not allowed to bring food or drinks from outside into the shop. Get over yourself, coffee nazi. Or don't.
