After living in Durham, NC, for three years now, we finally got around to giving Szechuan Garden in Morrisville NC a try - on the strong recommendation of a Chinese friend who came here some years ago and was delighted to have such a restaurant in his new home here. Simply put, everything we ordered was a home run. The soup - Wonton - was splendid. The broth had far more kick, far more substance, far more taste than the stuff we've managed to get at other local restaurants - and more clearly matched what I've eaten in Chinese restaurants throughout Southeast Asia . . . and, of course, in my few trips to Beijing. The egg rolls immediately made me think of this little hole-in-the-wall take-out Chinese joint in Brooklyn that I recall . . . from fifty years ago. The place was situated on the corner of Bay Parkway and 86th street, right at the point where the elevated track for the B train was located - and immediately became my father's first stop as he descended the station's stairs at the end of his workday, leading right to the front door of that cookery. He always ordered an egg roll or two, ate one standing in the entryway to the cook shop, and brought several home. Those Szechuan Garden egg rolls immediately, for me, resonated with the vigorous, deep taste of those Brooklyn delectables. We had a simple fish dinner with white rice, and an eggplant cooked deeply and wrapped in a thin dough covering - never had eggplant that way before and it was, again, a home run. The fish was so very simple, so very tasty - unforgettable. Thankfully, we have enough leftovers to make for another great meal today. Simply amazing food and nice easy going service. Hands down some of the best Szechuan food I've ever had. The egg roll was perfectly crispy and not greasy and generously filled with a delicious filling. The twice cooked beef was flavorful with just the right amount of spice. A little sweet and a little Heat. The fermented black beans in the sauce was a traditional touch that let me know the chef knows what he's doing. Stopped in for lunch takeout. Super fast service. Kung Pao chicken with rice and peppers. Had a good amount of spicy kick that I love. The chicken was the right amount for lunch. Bottom line: Szechuan Garden has been a steady choice for Chinese meals in Morrisville, both for delivery and in-house dining. Enjoyed selections such as House Special Lo Mein and Chicken With Cashew that have been pretty tasty. Good service and nice atmosphere noted. The Deets: I have come back to this restaurant recently for both delivery and eating in there. I used to frequent here years ago when it was known as Orient Garden but these days it is known as Szechuan Garden (some of their plates/bowls still say Orient Garden I've noticed). When I order for delivery, I go with their House Special Lo Mein that contains chicken, beef, and shrimp but I usually ask to skip the shrimp. This order is a good portion for delivery and pretty tasty, it remains one of my delivery go-to choices. My last in-house visit was a good one as well, being greeted promptly upon entering and sat with menu ready to peruse. The restaurant itself was bright and well decorated (beautiful back and side walls) but not overly adorned, a nice comfortable balance for a shopping area restaurant. Being a bit hungry, I went with two starters in ordering a fried spring roll as well as steamed pork dumplings. I enjoyed both starters, no notes, nice. For my main entree, I chose their chicken with cashew menu selection. It came as a generous portion with adequate amount of chicken and many, many cashews as well as a good amount of vegetables cooked just right. The sauce was flavorful and worked well with all components, I enjoyed it. Service during the visit was pleasant and checked on me periodically as well as kept my water filled as needed. My fried rice Friday journey came back with me to North Carolina and I have not found another place that does it better than Szechuan Garden. Formerly Orient Garden many years ago, this was the spot we would come for some Americanized Chinese food, mainly their sesame chicken. Today, Szechuan Garden is a spot where I will have my weekly fried rice Friday, or even share a traditional Chinese meal with my family. I can honestly say that everything I've eaten from Szechuan Garden has been delicious. A family favorite is their squirrel fish, a fried fish that is covered in sweet and sour sauce. Their sauce is the perfect balance of sweet and tangy. They serve traditional vegetables and we love their noodles, particularly their chow fun. They have options that get as traditional as it can get, and we love that! Now, the fried rice that has won over my heart is their young chow fried rice. This is a fried rice with not a lot of vegetables, and a ton of different meats. It has egg, shrimp, chicken and beef! The fried rice is over seasoned and oily, but both in a good way. They make it the kind of way that overloads your taste buds with all sorts of delicious spice and flavor. It's easily one of the best fried rice dishes in the area, no contest. I've also had a bunch of their appetizers on these occasions, their homemade dumplings, their chicken wings and their Szechuan noodles. All of their appetizers pass the test as well! It all tastes fresh, has good flavor and fairly affordable. I can see Szechuan Garden being my go-to Chinese restaurant for the foreseeable future. My new favorite for all things Szechuan. Called in an order for Spicy Beef with Soft Tofu and another order of General Tao chicken. The beef and tofu was spicy enough but not so much you couldn't eat the dish. Came with. Choice of fried or white rice. The beef was tender and nice bold flavors imo. Absolutely loved it! The general Thai chicken was yummy, had no sesame seeds or scallions on it which was fine with us. It had good flavor, and just right on the breading. Hubby liked it a lot. Said it was slight sweeter than what he is used to but still very yummy. Bottom line, when in the area and want spicy Asian food, this is our new go to. We will define back. read more

If you're looking for Sichuan food in Cary/ Morrisville area, this is the place to go to! The food is excellent - part of the menu contains American Chinese items while the other part has Sichuan items. We got Dan Dan noodles, Basil chicken and Stir Fried Pea Sprouts With Garlic. All the food items were delicious. We were very happy with our order and enjoyed the meal. This is a small family run business with prompt service. The ambiance was great - not too crowded. The prices are very reasonable compared to other Chinese eateries in town. This is a hidden gem and I highly recommend it. read more

Atmosphere with the tile walls takes you into the culture. Home made fresh crab Rangoon were great. I got drunken Phoenix which is breaded chicken and fried shrimp in Tao sauce. Amazing!!!!! I'm surprised this place isn't busier inside the restaurant. I assume they make most of their money with take out but, the service is great. The food tastes fresh and delicious. I got the sesame chicken combo with a spring roll and egg drop soup. The spring roll was fresh, the egg drop soup wasn't watered down and the chicken was crispy and tossed in sauce. Food is generally good and quite authentic. Just be aware that Szechuan cuisine is not the usual "Chinese" food most Americans expect. It is more highly spiced and can be pungent. Check your order carefully. I have had a couple misfires. read more

Tried a few dishes here recently: Dumplings in Chili Oil - large dumplings, pretty tasty. 3/5 Szechuan Spicy Noodles - Peanutty, with a chili oil sauce. Would have been better dine-in rather than takeout so these could be tossed in a bowl to let the peanut sauce and chili oil flavors combine with the noodles. Still good the day after when cold. 4/5 Shredded pork with smoked tofu: Mild dish with shredded green bell peppers, which is not listed on the menu. If it comes with peppers, I'd prefer China Palace (Durham)'s take on this because of the combined taste of the dish and peppers they use. This was fine, I just prefer scallions or celery over peppers for this dish. Plenty of leftovers. 3.5/5 Parking: Plenty in the shared strip mall lot. Remarkably, the highest initial score awarded was 9.6 out of 10; however, the member later retracted their score, acknowledging that they may have exaggerated but still thoroughly enjoyed the experience. On the other hand, the lowest rating came in at 8.2 out of 10. This marks the highest average score we have given yet. Everyone thoroughly seemed to enjoy their meal. One member even said that he would be able to drink a gallon of the sauce his meal came with. We tried a majority of the menu and didn't find one thing we didn't like. read more

Ordered take out here a few days ago and it's definitely a solid place for Chinese food in the Triangle area. We ordered their "squirrel tail" fish, stir fried pork with smoked tofu, and spicy beef and tripe. I have been looking for a restaurant here that makes "squirrel tail" fish, which is a traditional Chinese dish that consists of fried fish in a sweet and sour sauce. I've had it before in China and was dying to try it at Szechuan Garden when I found out they had this dish. It certainly did not disappoint, and I really enjoyed the flavor as well as the fish itself! Despite it being fried, it still held up relatively well as leftovers since there was so much. The other two dishes (stir fried pork with smoked tofu and spicy beef and tripe) were pretty normal in terms of what I was expecting from a good Chinese restaurant. Overall I would certainly order from here again and am looking forward to trying out some of their other dishes! read more

Very busy today. Had to wait 20 miinutes for a lunch table to open up, then got the table in the corner, you know the one, direct sunlight crushishing your soul through the super thin Venetian blinds by the back door, yeah that one. Roasted for a while, finally moved our table 1 ft from the window so they wouldn't have to drag my corpse out and pull a muscle. Anyway, menu has no detail, and being slammed, the waitress couldn't hear I or understand what I was asking. Was going to get Mongolian beef, but she said it was with only white onions... I says, ok, how about the tri pepper chicken? What peppers are in there? She says just bell peppers... hmmm I says. Ok, I'll have the ginger beef. Got the wonton soup, a spring roll in addition. Wonton soup was blandish broth with a wonton of mostly pasta. Luckily I was thirsty, so I drank the broth. The spring roll was decent. The ginger chicken was decent, no heat, but more rice than chicken and vegetables. Me thinks perhaps dinner would be a better time to check it out more thoroughly. read more

We used to go here frequently - especially for their excellent lunch specials. The restaurant is (well, was) beautiful. The tile walls and ceilings are flat out gorgeous! Sadly, I'm not sure we'll go back after our visit last week. The food was good, but not GREAT as it was before. We were there on a weekday with only one other person dining in, but there was a good amount of takeout business going on. Worst thing is it looks and feels grimy. The windows haven't been cleaned in who knows how long. There's food inventory and a rice cooker on tables IN THE DINING ROOM. WTH is up with that? Such a disappointment. read more

I'd tried their dan dan noodles, west lake style beef soup, and tri pepper chicken before. I would recommend avoiding the tri pepper chicken if you can't handle hiiigh amounts of spice! I almost died and had to stop ordering it. This time, I wanted to try something new, so I got the fried beef with chili pepper. It was decent but I was expecting it to be spicier (probably because expectations were set with the tri pepper chicken). I decided to stop by for lunch around 11:30 a.m. on a Friday. The restaurant was already starting to fill up. I was seated and greeted right away. As soon as I sat down, I was given fried wonton strips, the kind that goes into your soup. I love when restaurants offers this as a complimentary. This helps kick the soup up a notch! They were delicious! It was like eating potato chips which is addicting. It went well with the egg drop soup. The egg drop soup was on point! It was the best egg drop soup that I've had in a long time. I went with the Tri-pepper chicken off the lunch special. I was excited to eat it but when it arrived, it was a bit cold. I tasted like a dish that has been sitting for a while. The fried rice was also cold. It was called tri-pepper but was barely spicy.
