Top of the line looking bikes, not to mention the brands they carry are all well known bike mfgs. Went in to do some E-bike test rides to get a feel of the Bosch assisted motors on the Trek line of bikes. Sales rep Amy was so awesome and patient with all of my questions and concerns associated with an E-bike purchase. Chris who is also a bike enthusiast is extremely knowledgeable with any questions. They still sent two and although the item was returned and the company KNOWS it arrived in Wisconsin, they have failed to provide the credit back to the credit card. I know very little about bikes, other than how to ride one. When my bicycle stopped working properly, I brought it here (honestly, because they were open and the shop closer to me was not). I am so glad I did. First, the figured out that my baby's seat was dragging on the wheel a bit & then there was a slight problem with the gears. Initially, they told me to leave my bike with them, but I explained that it's my primary mode of transportation and I would not be able to get it from them tomorrow. So they fixed it while I waited and it was just $40. I'm so pleased to have had such quick and excellent service. Guess I've found my go-to bike shop! read more

My experience with Wheel & Sprocket was mostly perfect. My first visit was interesting, a Sunday during the pandemic so it had a social distancing line down the street. They were organized, friendly, but little inventory in stock relative to what I needed. They directed me to the website where I found both bikes I needed. I placed the order online, and the bikes arrived at the Evanston store a week ahead of schedule! I went to the store that day to grab the bikes, and the only part I wish I would have known ahead of time was the service options/add-one that may extend your pick-up visit. Other than that, I was so impressed with Gretchen Brauer's service. She was so helpful and smart and the most delightful person. Wheel & Sprocket in Evanston saved the day for me! My ancient bike was having seizures and I would have to get off my bike every block or so to revive it by unwinding the stuck pedal until it got loose again. Today, the bike's seizures got more frequent and severe.... I had to find a bike doctor. I decided to try Wheel & Sprocket. Nicholas the bike tech was so nice and knowledgeable! He found the most economical solution for me and worked on my bike right away so I could get home. My idea of bike maintenance is filling the tires with air. So you can imagine that this 20 year old bike has seen better days. Nick also noticed that the gears were kind of stuck. I had gotten so used to riding this bike that was stuck in one gear (downhill ok....uphill not so much). He oiled the bike chain and unstuck the gears for me at no additional cost. I was so amazed that such excellent customer service still existed! I felt like the luckiest bicyclist in Evanston! I pedaled and pedaled until I got home. No bike CPR was needed! Being completely bike-illiterate when I moved to Evanston, I luckily had these guys and gals to teach me the ways of the bicyclist. This is a long overdue review for these folks, since I need to thank them for the countless times they've saved my bikes (and me) from falling apart: 1. They replaced a nut and bolt for me on my bike fender. Twice. For free. 2. They straightened my bike seat. For free. 3. They stayed open 10 mins overtime on a Thursday night to fix my perforated bike tube of the rear bike wheel. 4. They offered free advice on what type of bike lubrication to use and where to go for open shops for bike tune-ups. 5. Once, before I paid for a new bike from another vendor, they offered a free "second review" just to make sure the price I paid would be worth the quality of the bike. Note that they also offer free bike tire pumping and 10% discount for parts and accessories for Wildcard holders. You can donate your used bike here, and they'll donate to other second-hand bike stores like the Recyclery. Overall, if you're looking for quality service from reliable bike mechanics who care about your bike safety, then Wheel and Sprocket is the place to go. read more

I reviewed this establishment a while ago giving it a horrible review due to their terrible customer service. I'm here to update that review. I went into Wheel and Sprocket to have my friend fitted for a road bike. They provided great customer service; the young employee who helped us spent probably an hour with usp sizing her and figuring out what kind of road bike would work best for her. Being small, they had go order a smaller frame size for her that she will be able try out and possible buy when the bike arrives to the store. All in all, they're service has dramatically changed for the better. I was very happy with my visit to Wheel and Sprocket, they are very knowledgeable and kind. Wheel and Sprocket has always treated me well, which I appreciate, considering I'm a casual biker and not one of those guys wearing spandex into Trader Joe's or flipping off cars that may or may not have seen them turning left! In fact, I took my 10 year-old Specialized in there for a tune-up and new front breaks, and they steered me away from the more expensive tune-up, for a cheaper fix and new front calipers. They texted me when it was ready, and because I was busy, didn't bother me when it took me a few days to get it. I love my bike, but after reading the other reviewer talk about their price-match guarantee, I'll definitely be looking here first, when I'm ready to purchase. Cool, laid-back staff, not too pushy, but helpful when needed. There are closer places to me, but I'll keep coming here, as long as they treat me like anyone else. read more

I brought my commuter/hybrid bike to Wheel and Sprocket for "The Annual" tune-up package ($85). Note that this package does not include cleaning the drive-train, only lubrication, so I wiped down the chain, crankset, and cassette as well as I could before dropping off my bike. I brought my bike in without an appointment, and as a result I had to wait a week to get my bike back because that was the next available service appointment. If you can't part ways with your bike for long, I recommend calling to make an appointment or booking an appointment online. Since the tune-up, my bike has been riding very smoothly. In addition to good work, the staff provided excellent service: they were friendly, competent, and quick. I highly recommend W&S for your bike needs. read more

I was hesitant to buy a bike from a "big chain store", especially when all the smaller bike shops in the area had such stellar reviews. While the independent bike shops certainly have amazing customer service, my experience at Wheel and Sprocket was just as enjoyable, but with the added benefit of having great deals and a huge selection. When they told me about their "110% price match guarantee", I was skeptical, but when I showed them Village Cycle's lower price, they matched it without question (saving me $170 off the retail price)! They weren't even picky about the process: I simply showed them a link to the better deal on my phone, and they said, "ok, we can match it!" Another reason I chose Wheel and Sprocket is because they offer no-interest financing, which is extremely helpful, as throwing down hundreds of dollars at one time isn't easy for a grad student. Not to mention it makes my budgeting much easier for the next 6 months! Lastly, the customer service was great. My salesman, Sean, was certainly trying to move bikes, but he also seemed to genuinely care, and was great in helping me pick the right bike. The owner came out during our interaction, and also gave some great advice. The only criticism I have is the owner seems a little strict on his employees. A female employee rode out on the bike I was going to test drive, and he yelled at her for not wearing a helmet. I'm not entirely sure if this was meant to be a joke of not, but I would hate to work there if he really was that high strung. That being said, he was very nice to me! One last note: how is this place rated as the most expensive bike shop in Evanston? Price Matching + Financing = way more affordable than the other shops. I recently had an issue while commuting home with my bike seat slipping a little. I stopped by this bike shop & asked if they could adjust the seat. The mech asked me if it was an E-Bike which it was. He told me "then I can't put a wrench to it, our lawyers have said not to service e-bikes". The issue had nothing to do with the E part of the bike. It was just a loose seat. My immediate thought was well you won't be putting a wrench on any of my other 5 regular bikes either. I have been going to this bike shop for 20 years. Its my LBS. I will not step foot in it again. I went a few blocks to the nearest bike shop & they fixed the problem in 10 minutes. They told me that they also will not work on the electric components of most off brand ebikes because it is just too difficult. This I understood. They also told me that my off brand e bike was not very complex & that they would try to work on it if they could do so easily. Since the maker of the bike is well established, sells quality parts on line & has repair videos on YouTube this should not be too difficult to set up. I was very impressed by the second shop's attitude which was understandable & fair. Wheel & Sprocket, however, has lost a once loyal customer. read more

I am super-happy with this place. They're running a tight ship. Def on the pricey side (cheapest bikes are $500: Townies. But so cute.) At the same time, they're not going to sell anything that's not excellent. The store manager was really kind. Appreciated that he gave my son & I a pep-talk about bike dangers: right turning drivers, & dooring. That should be protocol with kids. I've gone to W&S twice, for 2 different reasons. One was for a noise my derailleur was making and another was to find a new saddle. Derailleur issue - I ended up getting a full tuneup that was almost more expensive than my bike. And it took a WEEK. 6 rides later and the same issue came up again, AND something new was rubbing funky. And, to be honest, I'm not sure they actually did anything. Nothing was cleaned, which is really the only indication I have. I found grease buildup everywhere. For nearly $200, my whole bike should have been taken apart and put back together. I am extremely frustrated by this situation, still. Saddle - I walked in and the salesperson led me to extremely padded comfort saddles. Major judgement there, being that they hadn't seen my bike nor asked me what I was looking for. I was then sold an extremely padded saddle that I was told was made for women who ride aggressively and with drop-bars. LOL. This saddle was so cheaply made the rail popped out my first time on it. Had the salesperson spent ANY time getting to know what I needed, I would have walked out of there with the $120 Selle Italia I researched thoroughly online. Generally I do not like this bike shop at all. Go to Pony. read more

Wheel & Sprocket is the only place near Northwestern campus that sells bikes and offers bike repairs and honestly they really take advantage of college students by charging ridiculously expensive prices for their bikes. Even their used bikes cost hundreds of dollars which is such a rip off. I bought a used bike here because it was the only one I could afford and it's had so many issues I can't even tell you. Additionally, if you need any bike repairs they not only charge a ridiculous amount, but they will keep your bike for over a week to fix something so simple. Most college students depend on a bike to get around, so this is really inconvenient. Allowing customers to use a loaner bike to use would be nice, but they really only care about taking your money. Very disappointing honestly, I would recommend going somewhere else to purchase a bike. read more

Came in here casually to see if my current bike could be serviced. After some time discussing my options it became clear I would be more comfortable on a newer bike (I was riding a 1983 Schwinn Traveler - one in the wrong size at that). This being said, at no point did anyone pressure me into purchasing a new bike - they continued to try to find solutions for my current bike as they could tell I was attached to it. They gave me as many options as possible, a new bike only being one, and let me decide. I came in again today, this time with my new Trek, and not only did everyone I had talked to remember me, but they continued that excellent, understanding service. I wanted my new bike to fit my old rack but it didn't - they still worked together and tried to find me a solution to keep my old rack (i.e.: different adapter styles). At no point did anyone pressure me into a new rack or make me feel dumb for wanting a rack on a road bike. With personable and passionate people that don't pressure you to buy, Wheel&Sprockets is definitely my shop from here on out. read more

I have been taking my 21 y.o. Trek to another local business for maintenance but when it became clear that I had reached the limit of their competence, I turned to Wheel & Sprocket. My derailleur had sustained subtle damage from an accident (a child plowed straight into me and knocked me and my bike down) that made it slip gears. I made multiple visits to "Other Shop" but kept getting turned away because they claimed it didn't slip when they rode it. The folks at W&S actually *listened* to what I told them and, based on that and a visual inspection, diagnosed the problem right away. They even pointed it out to me. They not only solved the derailleur issue, they greased the side rails and replaced the pedals. The bike rides like a dream now, like new. I will be bringing it there for all my tune-up and repair needs. read more

Brought my bike in for a simple flat repair for one tire. Sales staff was friendly and helpful. Mechanics were busy, but fixed my flat in 10 minutes. I have docked 2 stars for the over-charged pricing. $8 for a replacement tube $18 labor for tube installation - for a 10 minute fix?!? I had to go to this place in a pinch situation, but I can't imagine going back after feeling taken advantage of. This is the highest repair price I've seen anywhere in the greater Chicago area. I read an article recently about the decline in bike riding amongst the younger generation and while that is a terrible thing and is no doubt happening for many reasons I am sure, bike shops can be a turnoff. Many places are not friendly and purchasing a bike is often a huge financial commitment so people end up at Target. Going to a big box store to purchase a bike will not give you the information, connection or help needed to make the choice that then gets you excited about biking. Wheel & Sprocket is that special shop. They spend thoughtful, quality time with you and there is nothing snotty about their shop culture. I'm a year-round bike commuter. This is my main vehicle. I bought my bike at W&S, and they do the vast majority of the maintenance. All of the mechanics are really outstanding and when I bought my original bike there 3 years ago after 20 years on my old one, they really understood the kind of durability and practicality I wanted and found a bike that fit me well. When less than a year later I got hit by a car on that bike and they had to deal with the insurance company to get it assessed and figure out if it could be repaired or had to be replaced, they took care of everything (I was still recovering) and I went back there to find all my old gear on a new bike, ready for me to go. I would trust mechanic Gretchen's advice on all things bike practicality and weather- or commute-appropriate gear, they're totally awesome and they even helped me pick out a seat that allows me to ride totally pain free even on long hauls. Some of the sales staff and several of the mechanics know me by name when I go in, and the text messages letting me know my bike is ready after repair or tune up mean I'm never waiting around. I had one less than satisfactory experience with a new salesperson there who I'd never seen before when I went to get my son a new bike last June (she was truly pushy and annoying), but I've been back on several occasions since and not seen her again, so I think they figured out she was a poor fit.
