Barrels of good times to be had here. Everything is barrel strength at Whiskey Thief, so the five sample tasting is quite the gauntlet. I found the high proof points to be draining, and so I can't recommend buying a bottle with my own money. The chocolates are a must pairing. Service, however, is super chill and friendly. The bar is a chill place to hang out afterwards, and the bitter blend for their Old Fashioned is stellar. I also bought a couple bars of soap. Earthy and aromatic! read more

What a wild disappointment. I do believe we came on and an off day, based on reviews and recommendations from friends, but our experience was so wildly unacceptable that I'm not sure it matters if we were an outlier. Our experience started at parking, there were multiple tour busses idling in the lot, and cars were parked rather haphazardly. We were directed to park on the side of the road with such a steep drop off, at one point our Yukon had two wheels off the ground. When checking in to the the $35/person tour (which we booked two weeks ago) I mentioned the parking situation and was told "yeah it's really bad, but we're working on it." I don't own a distillery, but seems an obvious solve is asking the tour buses to park up the road by the gift shop vs taking up space in the lot. We were eager to join our tour and forget about the stressful lot but alas, our tour was an absolute shit show. I stopped counting when I hit to 50 people, our tour guide had a loud speaker, most people in the tour were drunk and talking over him, and for the first time in many many tours, we walked off before we ever got a chance to try anything. There is no reason but greed to not cap a tour, they were making close to 2 grand off a miserable experience for their guests. Again, I do think it was likely an outlier but we will never be back, and I will ensure no one I know ever goes either. read more

This was the second stop on our birthday tour through the Louisville bars and distilleries. We were able to park right outside the distillery in a reserved spot in sort of an alleyway. One of the things they offered in this distillery was a chance to tap right into a whiskey barrel for a flight of 5 different barrels. This was a really cool option but I knew I had a long day and evening ahead of me so I did not give it a try but definitely will be back to give it a go. They also had a chocolate pairing you could purchase with a selection for each barrel. They had a nice little gift shop and we perused what they had to offer and purchased a Glencairn glass for our collection at home. We sat down at the bar to order our cocktails. Valentine's Day (my birthday) had just passed a couple weeks prior and they still had their V-Day special on the menu so I ordered that cocktail. My cocktail was the Crushed Velvet, Whiskey Thief Bourbon, Creme de Cacao, Vanilla liqueur, Luxardo juice, chocolate bitters, and egg whites. It was a fine cocktail although not my favorite of the day. The hubby ordered a Maple Smoked Manhattan which had Whiskey Thief Bourbon, sweet vermouth, bitters, and maple syrup and he said he enjoyed it. Sitting at the bar was nice because they had a huge window open to the outside and you could feel the warmth of the day and a slight breeze. Whiskey Thief is by far my favorite small craft whiskey on the bourbon trail. It's distillery tours in Frankfort and this bar in Louisville are amazing. The staff at both places are some of the friendliest people I have met at any establishment and accommodated our requests. There was an outstanding band playing during our stay. The uncut unfiltered experience is a value packed treat! $35 gets you five pours directly out of their whiskey barrels. One of the barrels had an 8 year bourbon in it, a true value. My friend and I made the reservation through online to do the bourbon/whiskey tasting and have one cocktail while enjoy the music. We got there and we weren't too sure of how to check in because it was public. But we check in our ID for the bourbon tasting. We do really enjoyed the experience of bourbon and found what barrel that we enjoyed the most. You have the optional to fill the bottle after you pick which one you like. We didn't do because it is a little pricey but we are local so we will definitely come back to have more tasting and cocktails. We do enjoy the jazz music and the vibe were nice. Best place to try Bourbon and many different kinds. Sample la today were five varieties: 5 yr 70/21/09 119.8 proof 4 yr 74/18/08 107.2 proof 5 yr 54/36/10 115.9 proof 5 yr 78/10/12 116.0 proof and I don't know the last one. I learned a lot about the first number near the corn content and the second has something to do with the flavor and so on. This is a really cute spot! It's a bit tucked away, but I recently went for a cocktail. There is some dedicated parking, but otherwise you'd need to park on the street. Upon entering, we received a very friendly welcome and were given the lay of the land. You can do a tasting for $30, which includes a souvenir glass, or you can have a drink at the bar. We opted for cocktails at the bar, and they were so lovely. The space is beautiful, and they also have live music on the weekends. There is also a nice gift shop area! Great venue! We went for the Bluegrass band and were so impressed. Great staff and space, acoustics. Would fit in any corner in Austin, Nashville, you name it. So glad to discover and can't wait to go back. If I had to pick something to improve upon I'd say MAYBE try to add a server or 2 on busy nights as it got a little hectic. The guy that waited on us didn't really say much just gave us samples out of barrels and just sat there not explaining anything except for the mash bill. This is an excellent new hole-in-the-wall that compliments this city well. The space is a smaller venue, but the design is beautiful and very inviting. I attended an event here which withheld multiple people comfortably, so a great venue for your next event. The staff and management are friendly and helpful, and the cocktails were great. I didn't get to experience the tasting option, but they do offer that and I hope to go back soon to partake. They also have a small stage with variety of performances.
