I was looking at the beverage menu saw, Sapporo, okay great beer for a Sushi experience. I guess after looking over the Sushi offerings, it was hard to find a clean roll. Clean roll, to me means, no imitation crab in their roll. The one clean roll was the Spider Roll which we got 2 of. Of the 5 rolls we got the Spider was the favorite to me, I got the Hot Lava Roll not my favorite, but my wife ordered the Crazy Devil Roll it was good, and another clean roll was what my daughter got the 911 Roll. We all shared amongst the 3 of us. Something else missing was, miso soup or a ginger salad staples at Japanese Sushi places. Daughter's husband got Teriyaki Chicken, not a sushi guy Lol! I did get him to eat 1/2 a Spider Roll piece. Overall a 3.5 for Sushi, but ambiance 4.5. What I'd like more is clean sushi offerings, Naruto style, and a must have Unagi (Eel), Sweet Shrimp w/deep fried heads, Toro (Yellow Fin Tuna), and maybe some Alaskan Crab! We were seated right away in a booth and our server pulled down the privacy screen. I have never seen that before. It made things a little more private. The food came out very quickly. I had the dragon roll. It's basically a California roll with eel on top. I enjoyed the crunch of the cucumber and the glaze was perfect and not too sweet. The sesame chicken was not on the menu but we were still able to order it. Even though it was coated in a honey sauce, the breaded chicken was still crunchy. The food here is good, but the service really needs improvement. Every time I've come before, we were served miso soup, but during this visit with my family, we didn't receive any. We got seated fast but It also took about 15 minutes after being seated for someone to even come take our order and drinks. After that, they only came back to drop off our food and never checked on us again. We had to flag down other staff just to get us water and soy sauce bowls. Once we finished eating, our plates just sat there the entire time -- no one came to clear them. We ended up waiting 20 minutes after eating just sitting there and eventually had to wave down another server to ask for the check. No one ever came by to ask how the food was or if we needed anything. The only interaction we had was when they took our order and dropped off the food. I've been going to Sushi for the last 11 years and I've always ordered their island roll. it has a crunch, some smoothness and some spice to it. It's absolutely delicious. I highly recommend coming here. They get you your food really fast and are extremely kind to their customers. They keep your drinks refilled at all times, which is always nice. Cajun tuna is so perfect here every time, it's seared ahi tuna but it's on their menu as Cajun tuna and it's so unbelievably consistently good. This is my favorite place to get sushi in Anchorage. I wasn't super impressed with the sushi this round - I've only been a hand full of times but this round was ehhhhh. We started with miso soup, which was delish && some edamame. Then we got the monkey brain which was weird.... To say the least. It was way different from any that I've ever had before. It's such a shame, because the food is amazing and the restaurant is beautiful inside. But once again they were understaffed with people that have no clue how to manage tables. I believe my last review for Sushi Ya was when they were on Dimond, so I thought I'd update my review for this new location. I came here last Friday for a friend's birthday. For some reason Sushi Ya does not take reservations, so we had to wait about an hour and a half for a table for a party of eight. I ordered the Kevin Love roll (interesting name choice) which I enjoyed. Nice combination of flavors and textures, but $18 for a roll is pretty steep. Some of the special rolls even go for $20+. I was disappointed in how small the ala carte sushi portions are for the prices. The slices of salmon very thin, especially compared to my photos of the same item from several years ago. These were the thinnest slices of salmon I've ever gotten, including grocery store sushi. Not worth the $7. The ikura sushi ($8) was better, though I still thought the portion was relatively small. Service was good considering how busy it was. Most of the checks were individual and there was no problem splitting them up and paying. They now offer the option to scan a QR code to pay as many restaurants have adopted in the COVID era. Parking lot is much easier to navigate and has more space than the old Dimond location. I like the atmosphere and the interior of the restaurant is lovely. Great menu variety, but I don't think the quality and portion sizes are worth the prices. I understand a lot of restaurants have had to raise prices given the circumstances with the pandemic, but it seems like this restaurant has had particularly large price increases. read more

We came to sushi ya because we had both never been here and our mission was to try a new place for sushi. The ambieance here is one of the best we have I think. Nicely decorated with blown glass figures in between booths. The booths are constructed of wood with tall sides with plexiglass. Once you order your food they slide down a plastic screen to give you privacy. There are bamboo plants throughout. We came just after 5 on a Saturday night and we were seated right away. About 30 minutes in they were slammed with people and our server was not attentive. For the menu, they have a column of cooked sushi rolls and uncooked, fresh sushi, a small special menu, dessert, and a drinks menu. I was a little disappointed with the menu with the rolls. They didn't have a lot of creative rolls. They were all pretty much the same. Tempura shrimp crab or lobster with the same toppings. I am no sushi expert but I like to get a crunch roll. We ended up getting the crispy crunch roll and the golden crunch roll. The crispy crunch roll was tempura shrimp with bacon. The roll was pretty good. The bacon was pretty overpowering every other flavor which wasn't too bad because it is bacon after all. The golden crunch roll had tempura shrimp and cream cheese. They were very similar but different flavors to each. We also got some salmon shashimi. It was a three piece and the pieces were quite big. Nice presentation to it. When we left three different people said thank you for coming. Prices were average for the rolls, 12-15 for cooked and 15-25 for uncooked. Bulging I was $30 which maybe we will try next time don't know the portion you get so that might be pretty expensive. We also got fried Oreos for $6, you get 4 of them. They are delicious!! I would come back for a lunch bento box maybe because of the environment but the sushi menu was nothing to remember. read more

Happy to have another good sushi option in Anchorage! The atmosphere and the service are the best parts about it here. The sushi is good, not amazing but good. The ambience is really nice here and you can slide the blinds down for privacy which is unique. They are very friendly and prompt in service. This is normally kind of a turn off for me, but atmosphere and service are so 10/10 that I didn't mind too much: they do not include miso soup and salad, you do have to pay extra for it. I read that on reviews prior so going into it knowing made me less disappointed too haha. Their salad and soup were really good, we still ordered them even though it wasn't included. This is the kind of place I would want to go to for a date night or with a group of friends for a birthday or something. The private booths and cool vibe in there make it the kind of place you want to celebrate at. They also have a drink menu, not a full bar but they have sake based cocktails, wine, and beer. Not too many sushi places have this so that's a plus too if you like to have a drink with dinner. The sushi was solid but not my absolute favorite. The rice was a little hard and less of that slightly sweet, rice vinegary and softer texture that I prefer for sushi rice. Honestly the rice was the only thing that made the sushi not 100% for me, other than that the rolls were big and had plenty of fish on them so they were really good in that regard. Sushi Ya is placed in a nook on the side of the highway and definitely doesn't scream upscale sushi restaurant. My husband and I have passed the place a few times and thought the name was cute and decided to take a gamble on this restaurant without the influence of Yelp. It's a good thing we did that because the reviews do the restaurant no justice. Like all the other reviews we too thought the service was lacking, but only on the number of people they have on their wait staff. What made up for the tardiness was the modern Japanese ambiance in addition to the charismatic wait staff. Our waitress was accommodating and made our experience amazing to include the complimentary miso soup she added while we waited. The food selection tasted fresh and they had an extensive drink menu. We ordered 3 different rolls split between 2 people, which was perfect. We ordered the sushi ya roll and the island roll from their uncooked menu and their Kenai roll from the cooked rolls menu and it all tasted fresh and amazing. To my surprise they also had omakase selections as well, so we're definitely returning to give those a try. Overall we had a positive experience and will definitely be returning. read more

One of the decent above average sushi place in a anchorage (there's not many). Atmosphere 10/10. Clean space and taking covid precautions. Tight space but well designed to give enough space and privacy between tables. Service is great and fast. All the servers communicate through a headset and seem efficient. Sushi chefs are welcoming and greet you loudly. Food taste above average and good for Anchorage. Definitely nothing compared to lower 48 or some areas like LA or Seattle so if you are from out of town, don't set your bars too high. Price is definitely on the higher end. Rolls are averaging $18 but I find this to be reasonable given the economy. Overall, a great dining experience and would pick this place over many other sushi restaurants in Anchorage.
