Saturday dinner while camping in Glen Rose. Full bar and mostly full restaurant. Very good entrees, very good creme brulee, good drinks, average service but it was busy, and it's a speakeasy. Appetizer salads were half-portion Caesar (on the ides of March) and a half "bootlegger", which was greens, pecans, apples, goat cheese and an avalanche of dressing. Downer. But made up for it with excellent fried bread, then our entrees. She had a perfect ribeye and I had an even more perfect short rib, braised in wine. Superb. Excellent creme brulee. Only drawback was our server neglected us for about 30 minutes but it was busy. Would eat there again and recommend though not glowingly. read more

We are from Dallas and we are spending the weekend in Glen Rose. We had the best time and service at Whisky Woods. Our waiter was attentive and gave us great recommendations. The atmosphere is relaxed and enjoyable. We were able to unwind and enjoy each other company and just hang out. This is a great hidden gem and I hope more people come check this place out. It feels like an old time bar with a modern twist and great customer service. We will make it a point to come back and visit this place. Well, we've have been to this establishment since it 1st open. We liked this place, but I have to say the standards here have fallen. We come in last evening. The bar was busy and patrons at only a few tables. We sat ourselves at a open table after grabbing our own menus and table which was OK. Our water right away for drink orders, but I had to ask for silverware and water after our drinks came. We each ordered the gumbo and half and 1/2 each. Our food order came out separately. Our waiter seemed eager to help, but didn't listen very well. Before I asked gof the gumbo I asked how much protein was in it. He said it comes with shrimp, sausage and fish. What I got was shrimp, 2 slicez of sausage that sliced down to 4 quarters. This is not a good way to cut costs. While the flavor was there I was looking for bite size pieces. The bread that came with the gumbo tasted burnt from the grill markings which is not necessary if your going to burn it. I would have gathered had a basket of French bread that's hot served with butter. We ordered the Bootlegger salad, it was way overdressed, and had tons of cheese and 5 pecans but no apple slices. The dressing tasted more like vinegar than bourbon. It was not balanced. We each had a glass of white wine, a Savigion Blanc. Our bill came, with our tip dinner was a $100. Not sure how that happens when you order a soup and salad with 2 glasses of wines. Just a few recommendations on standards, print out clean and non tattered menus, if your trying to cut cost on a salad, cut out back on the cheese not the apples which were do thin and mushy. Not sure if we will come back. I'm a foody and when you charge this kind of prices for a soup and salad don't drop your standards. read more

We have been here before and have had great service and food. However, they do stop letting people in an HOUR before they actually close... which did throw us off a bit when we showed up at 9:04 and got denied service (especially for a party of 2). I work in the food industry so I do understand having a cut off time... but an hour before you close was alittle confusing. We will still be back again though! Was our Anniversary. We made reservations online The scallops (pictured), were so good. The steak was also very tasty. We had an excellent waitress too. The atmosphere was perfect. Low lighting and well placed tables. I mentioned I made the reservations online. I made a special request to have champagne and a candle. The restaurants manager (I was told), that handles the special request was off. Although I was a little upset but only slightly because the food was so good. We were quite surprised when the chef made us a special dessert. This definitely made me smile. Highly recommend. read more

Fantastic. I had Chilean Sea Bass and friend had Cajun Shrimp Pasta. We split brussel sprouts and wedge salad. Crème Brûlée for dessert. Some of the best sea bass I have had with sweet chili sauce cooked to perfection. Definitely will stop next time we pass through. read more

A group of us went Saturday night at 7 pm it was busy like usual, but it took us 2 hours to get our food! One person got a supposed to be a well done burger and it came out dripping blood !! Two other orders were messed up also ! Two people ordered cocktails and they were terrible also and reordered they came out to table no good also so they comped us ! Went with a large group on a Thursday evening. We have been several times but this time the bar drinks were weak or overly sweet depending. For the price, you'd expect an excellent beverage. Next time sticking to wine. Short ribs seemed more like a chunk of chuck roast this time. Tasted good. Portion was good. Whipped potatoes were watered down tasting, flavorless. Turkey was over salted. They were out of broccolini that night so Brussels sprouts or sautéed greens were given. Sprouts were over seasoned with balsamic. The sautéed greens were supposed to be spinach and kale mixture. No spinach. Was tasty though. Appetizers were excellent as usual. Overall, we had a good experience. Just seems like corners were cut to maybe cut food expenses. Service was excellent but they weren't busy either. Will try again sometime. read more

I found this place doing a google search and decided to take my wife there for a date. The prices were pretty much what I expected for a steak restaurant, but that's where the similarities end... typically a $50ish steak in a good restaurant will be dainty as if they were trying to feed my 10 year old daughter, and I leave feeling hungry and like I could have done that at home for 1/3 of the price. But believe me when I say that I have made it 45 years in life and never once had leftover steak on my plate until now! With that said, it was not only a great portion it was completely amazing! No need for additional salt or pepper because the chef is some kind of genius! Everything that we ordered was outstanding and to top it off the wait staff went out of their way to provide awesome service, I really believe that they are proud to work there because they know what a good thing they got! Well that or the owner beats them into submission at the start of every shift??? Either way they treated us and surrounding tables to top notch service! And finally I decided to try one of their signature cocktails (Ward 8) it's nice and refreshing whiskey/citrus blend for a warm Texas summer or fall day. I thought it would be appropriate to have their Old Fashioned and it too was done perfectly, I couldn't have done it better myself. ( so I may or may not have ordered a few more...) as a side note the Old Fashioned goes perfectly with their delicious crème brûlée ( yeah I looked up that spelling). We had a great experience at Whiskey Woods! the ambience in the front dining room was nice and cozy. The food was phenomenal and well worth the cost. I had the pork chops with greens and turnip bread pudding and loved it all. Mybhubby had the short ribs and he was very impressed with it. Our reservation was for 5:45pm and by 6:20 we had to flag down another wait staff member and tell her we've been waiting for awhile for someone to come take our meal order. We had seen the waiter once when he came to get and deliver our drinks. Our waiter finally came and was very attentive to us for the rest of the meal and was very personable and shook handa with all of us thanking us for coming in. That was a nice & personable touch. We were impressed he memorized all our orders and appetizers! Last week while visiting friends in nearby Hico, we enjoyed our first dining experience at Whiskey Woods but it certainly won't be our last. This truly has got to be the finest restaurant in Texas! We never expected this level of atmosphere, food excellence and service. Our waiter for the evening was Angel M. and his service delivery was par excellence. We ordered the Braised Short Rib and it was beyond scrumptious; the two sides of greens were also delicious and complemented the beef perfectly. We can't wait to return and try other selections from the menu. If Texas had a Michelin chapter Whiskey Woods would deserve three stars!
