This is a fun spot! Well crafted cocktails, gorgeous original architecture, an eclectic crowd with every cross section of Austin represented. Spent a few hours here last night celebrating a friends birthday and I was not disappointed. It was a great night for patio chillin and sipping on your favorite drink. There is indoor seating as well, but their patio is bigger and much cooler, temperature wise. Bartenders are awesome. Thai Kun is onsite, but I didn't get to try any of the food. We stopped by for HH before dinner on a Thursday. It was still early so we were able to get seats in the main bar. I had the Old Fashioned & my GF had a Mescal drink. They were both excellent & William was fantastic taking care of us. We learned about different types of Mescal & some history about the building. I'm so glad we didn't allow the somewhat sketchy exterior to deter us from finding the entrance to this place and going inside. Whisler's is located on a street corner and doesn't have its own parking lot so you'll need to find parking in the alley like we did or on the street. There's no main entrance per se but we saw a bouncer standing in front of a maroon curtain and figured that must be where we enter. He let us through and we were immediately transported off of Sixth Street. This bar feels like a classic speakeasy with random, fun pieces of furniture and decorations and it's quite narrow but long. We grabbed a couple seats at the bar and found the bartender to be helpful, chill and attentive. I ordered the Temple of Doom which is a mezcal and pineapple based cocktail and my bf ordered the East of Eden, a rum-based cocktail. We both very much enjoyed our drinks and had we not already had dinner reservations shortly after, we likely would've stayed much longer. The bartender told us that we ordered two of his favorite drinks and that most people don't go for the East of Eden because they aren't familiar with the listed ingredients but we asked about them and were intrigued so we ordered it. I definitely recommend asking if you don't know what something is because it just might be the best drink ever! We loved the music they played and the quirky, chill vibe and will definitely make a point of going back next time we visit Austin. read more

Last night 9/29/17, a couple friends and I ordered drinks at the outdoor bar. I bought a total of 6 drinks. A couple hours later, I decided to close my tab but to my surprise, I was charged 20% tip without my consent. When I asked why, I received a rather curt answer: "Because you came with a group of people." There was no written policy about this anywhere on the menu or at the bar. I didn't walk out on my tab; I only ordered one round of drinks and was going to tip well without being mandated to. One bartender was nice about it and tried to rectify the situation by making a random free drink. However my bartender (backwards hat, mustache), scoffed at the situation and avoided eye contact with me. This shows poor customer service and is a form of theft. My 20% tips will be going elsewhere read more

Out of all the bars my friend took me to on the east side, Whisler's was my favorite. I guess it's a lot of Austin, but this was a nice upscale bar with a "come as you are" vibe. I love it! We only have one bar like that in San Diego, so it's a nice change. My friend had wine and a cocktail, which I tried and was amazing, but I stuck with beer. $4.50 for local cans of beer, that's awesome! Even better, the staff didn't bat an eyelash when I told them to pick a beer for me. They have a pretty awesome food truck out back (I have a separate Yelp review for that), and the people here all seemed really cool. read more

I've only been here twice. But I came 2 weeks apart from either each other. I've had 1) my first and 2nd ever Old-Fashioned 2) the Sidecar 3) Pegu club (I think that's the name) 4) High Plain's Drifter We had a great time, especially after a seat finally opened up. I like that it has at least some parking. Very cool ambiance, kind of feels like you walked onto a movie set. Not a dive bar at all, very rustic, industrial, cool East side of Austin feel. I know the folks that have seen this place evolve may not like it. FOlks who use to come by when it was Rabbit's. But I love it. I wish I didn't live all the way up north in RR but its a great change up from Teravista. lol. Talk about Night and Day. I almost hesitate to write how much I enjoy it because I don't want it to get to where I can never sit down again. It's also right next to East Side Kings Food Truck. Cant wait to go back. read more

This is a gorgeously assembled bar with well-appointed indoor and outdoor spaces--where you can enjoy the many superbly mixed drinks on the menu. The overall setting, ambiance and drinks would be so easy to enjoy were it not for the profoundly rude, judgmental, and generally hostile bartender we had to deal with. I came with a group of four on a Sunday evening to check out the bar, we arrived completely sober, and were nothing but polite and well behaved. Service was prompt but absolutely riddled with barbed commentary, sarcasm and generally childish antics intended to belittle and judge. Every rose has its thorn, and she was the only unpleasant person we encountered on our entire trip to austin. The bar may be gorgeous, but its only as good as the people that work there, and this bartender positively ruins the place. The rest of the staff were lovely, but we ended up leaving and going to Kitty Cohen's afterwards to wash the sour taste out of our mouths. read more

What a great find on East 6th Street! My brother said, you have to try Whisler's!! We were in town for New Year's Eve and on New Year's Day night, we looked for a new spot to try & this place is awesome!! My husband is drinking Basil Hayden Dark Rye on an ice rock, superb whiskey. They have a nice specialty cocktail menu. Drew, our bartender, is the best and took great care of us. First I tried the Lady is a Vamp. made of Icelandic vodka, cinnamon, grapefruit, lime, and soda. It was delicious!! Now, I'm drinking the Most Can't Talk, made of Pisco, red wine, raspberry, campari, and lemon. It is delicious too! What a great place to hang out & have a drink. They play great music! It is dark and intimate but you could also hang out with your friends. There is an outside bar and seating area, which are closed tonight because it is a Wednesday with a smaller crowd. But we loved it! We will be back. Thanks Drew!! read more

Jesse is the most outstanding bartender at this establishment! After the bald fellow working at the indoor bar proceeded to ignore my group for 15+ minutes while he served people who came in behind us, we confronted him and he said "it's called waiting your turn" we made our way to the back bar where Jesse took our order and immediately made the drinks, (which were amazing!) and apologized for his coworkers incompetence. I got this mezcal drink with turmeric and it was so good. I like the smoky taste of mezcal so I enjoyed it. Btw, if you like mezcal, don't forget to check out the "secret" mezcal only bar they have upstairs. The bartender will help you select one based on whether you wanna shoot or sip (definitely sip it) and your price point. I had an awful experience at this bar due to a bartender there. He threw ice at me. Yes, literally threw ice at me, multiple times. As a way to "get my attention" because he didn't like that I had the light on my phone on for a minute so that I could have enough lighting to actually read the cocktails on the menu (it's extremely dark inside the bar). I emailed Whisler's manager about this incident and he did get back to me stating that he spoke to this bartender about this unacceptable behavior and that it will not happen again. read more

When staying at arrive hotel in Austin I was thrilled to see that whisler's was directly across the street from our hotel. This place is bustling at night. I am not sure if there was an upstairs as we hang out on the lower level. Downstairs there's was two bars one inside and another outside in a tented area. The vibe here is very romantic and relaxed. It has almost a speak easy feeling about it. We ordered several drinks off the menu and loved all of them. The bartenders were all pleasant and kept up with the amount of people. I would not recommend if you are someone who gets claustrophobic though as it can get really packed. Whisper's is super loud and open very late. read more

So the caveats to this review are: 1. I didn't try the old fashioned, which apparently I should have, judging by other reviews 2. My wife and I came here at around 1:45am to finish the night before heading to our hotel across the street and I'm sure the atmosphere is much different earlier in the night or even daytime 3. Being that it was 1:45am, you can imagine, I was already nursing a good buzz (thank you pitcher of Red Bull vodka from Shakespeare's) Now, I've seen the bar during the day and it looks like a really nice neighborhood bar that I would like to chill at. Even late at night on a Saturday the vibe was quite relaxed with some people sitting outside with their dogs and just a few people left in the indoor bar area. I was able to get a drink as late as 1:55am so that was refreshing, being from Cali where booze stops flowing at 1am. Spoke to the bartender about making a light drink that the wife and I could share and he suggested going off menu. While I appreciated the effort and the drink was definitely not strong I felt it was way too acidic. It was $13 so I finished it but if I'm being honest, I probably would stick to the menu next time and maybe try an old fashioned. read more

Beautiful bar, overall really cool vibe and delicious drinks! This place does get crowded, so be warned. We went to the back outside bar and were served faster than the inside bar! I got the English Summer and it was by far one of the best drinks I had all weekend! You can never go wrong with gin and honeydew! My only complaint is how dark it is at night inside. Since there was no open seating outside, we opted for inside seats. It was super stuffy and hot, and so dark I could barely see the people I was with. Next time I will just stand outside! read more

Coming from a Service background of 20+ years, went to take my bestie for a birthday drink. 2:00 on a Saturday, no one else was in the Bar. Looked around until we found some voices and was told to order there at the bar. Ordered: Mimosa, Madras. $22. The bartender was aloof and I couldn't get over both the size of the drink - Mimosa 3.5 OZ glass - the Madra's 7 oz glass. The "juice" for my drink that should be cranberry and oj had absolutely no flavor, so pretty much tasted like water and vodka. I drank a little bit - went back to the bar and stood there for over 5 minutes waiting for someone to see me ( didnt wait longer since I am currently sporting an Airboot for my ankle ) So I grabbed some oranges and made some more juice. Considering that no one else was there I couldn't believe that we couldn't even talk to an employee about fixing the drink. Maybe this is the new way - but customer service goes a long way and we would've gladly stayed for more drinks had they tasted better and had some service. read more

Back home in Austin for the wedding of my childhood friend. Flew in late last night around and went straight to E 6th to find some tacos and and margarita to celebrate my partner's birthday. It's her first birthday away from her immediate family/sisters in like 10 years. She has social anxiety. At the bar, as the bartender was handing over the drinks, my partner blurted out, "it's my birthday!" Admittedly, I think, half-hoping that maybe someone other than me might share in her excitement. What the bartender did instead was shame and berate her for what he referred to as soliciting free stuff..."maybe if it was part of natural conversation, and when you first came up and were like [in a complete unironic valley girl impression] 'omg it's my birthday!'' He went on and on, lecturing her about how he would've brought it up way more smoothly than she did. I get that it's awkward if you're not one of those places that gifts things for people's birthdays. But there are literally countless other ways you can respond than by being prickishly unkind and making the socially anxious girl cry on her birthday. read more

Really cute spot but I won't be back because of the service. Though multiple people were working there were only two bartenders for a fairly crowded bar. When I asked an outside bartender with a full beard to serve us, he suggested that the "best things in life are worth waiting for". The eccentric bartender inside, BJ was flippant, didn't make eye contact and gave us an overall unwelcoming feeling while sitting at the bar. This arrogant attitude is so against what made Austin great - whistlers struck me as a beautiful and pretentious place where servers think it's acceptable to treat the customer as if they are an annoyance more than a blessing. Absolutely horrible. I was passed from one bar to another. I asked why and was told "well obviously the bartenders are having a conversation" so I asked for a manager. I was declined a convo with a manager. The employee approached me a half hour later cussing at me with his manager watching. I said I didn't appreciate this and that this was intimidation. I ceased the convo and was told to leave. I was then told that I should take me and my bitch friends to leave. Mind you my friends had NOTHING to do with this.
