Decent little place - nothing great or amazing. I had been here once before, although I just went the other day with my sister and nephew. The menu is a tad small, but fine none the less. I ordered a wrap sandwich, sis ordered eggs benedict and nephew had, what else, a grilled cheese. They make their own bread, which I find to be a nice touch, and the grilled cheese looked amazing! The bread was cut a little too thick for a 3 year old, however. My wrap was OK - nothing amazing. Lunchmeat turkey, crisp lettuce, ranch dressing and pepper jack cheese. Sis' breakfast looked GREAT - we also got a short stack of pancakes to share, they were also GREAT. Yay! I'm a fan. First off, this place is HIDDEN. You blink and you miss it. Our good friends moved from Ann Arbor to their new place in Birmingham, and this place was within walking distance of their new place. When we walked in, first thing I noticed... this place is tiny. Booths are small, and if you have a party of more than 4, you will probably be waiting. If you have a large party, more than likely, you will be split up. There is just not enough room. We had 4 adults, and 2 high chairs. We were seated in the corner, with little room for the high chairs... No big deal. We ordered, and the portions were smaller than expected, but tasty. Pancakes, pancakes, pancakes!!!!! One of our German friends became quite the pancake connoisseur and Whistle Stop quickly became his favorite. He traveled often and for long stretches for work, and Whistle Stop was always top on his list of priorities upon return home to Birmingham. As such, we were thankfully introduced. It's a small little diner-esque place that has probably changed very little in the past 20 odd years. But man are their pancakes to die for!!! I've tried a number of things on the menu. Idk why this place has four stars and the one in pleasant ridge has three! It's average basic food!!! Nothing wow about it. Not a must try spot. I've been to both and the pleasant ridge one is by far much better! YUMMY. this is a cute (almost unnoticeable) little restaurant right next to the Birmingham Amtrak station. My friend and I got breakfast here before I had to catch the train back to Chicago. It's your average breakfast food with very reasonable prices. However, what bumped this up to 4 stars for me was the AMAZING cinnamon roll. While visiting my mom (who lives within walking distance of this little gem) we decided to go here for breakfast. WOW! My mom and I both ordered the Blueberry Pancakes. These things are MASSIVE and delicious. You can order 2 or 3. There are lots and lots of blueberries in the pancakes!!! My husband ordered the Apple Pancakes. It looked like apple pie filling and he said they were really good. He also ordered a side of bacon. This place is small and I hear it does a great breakfast crowd on the weekends. No waiting during the week! They also serve lunch. I have been going to the whistle stop for breakfast for over 5 years; just about every Saturday after working out w friends. They know me in there by name and have always been friendly. Yesterday, when I arrived, just like any other Saturday, it was pouring rain outside and I have to park about a block away. Sweaty, rain drenched and cold, I couldn't wait to start w orange juice and a hot coffee. My friend was stuck on the phone in her car, parked right in front, and said "I'll be right in, talking to my boss." I went in, greeted w the usual morning hellos and "how many are you?" I said "usual, just two." "Is your full party here?" The owner replied. I said "she's right there," pointing my finger to her car, "she's answering a question for her boss. Can I get our table? I'm freezing." The owner (who knows me!!!!!) replied "not until your full party is here." I said, "what?" And she repeated her words as if she was a robot!!!" And explained to her that my Fried would be right in "look there she is, she's right behind me." Same thing; robot. Right then I turned to walk out and my friend walked in. By then, I was so angry that we left. The owner and one of the waitresses were laughing. I was so upset! This is a community-type place, neighborhood diner. We all know each other. How do u tell a neighbor you have seen for 5 years (and a generous tipper) they can't be seated? This situation was deplorable and I wil never step foot in there again. Ever. I hope this never happens to anyone else at the whistle stop, however, don't go in without your full party, for they won't seat you...even if they see them through the window. Things aren't always black and white. Sometimes in this life we need to lean a little, just in case that person may be having a bad day....or you know them well and they are always a "oh, just us two. Thanks." My only experiences have been for breakfast and they've all been great. My favorite is the Kurtzy omelette, but really any of them are good. They've got a good variety of breakfast items on the menu including plenty of sweet offerings. As I pay at the register I always check out the pies in the cooler. They're homemade and look amazing. With the Whistle Stop being in my back yard basically I am a frequent patron. Food: Hands down the best thing on the menu is the Mooney AKA breakfast sandwich. I recommend ordering it on an english muffin. If I'm there for lunch or dinner I always opt for soup. Service: The waitresses there are always more then friendly and always provide me with a to-go cup for my hot tea. On the weekends at prime time anticipate waiting 20 minutes but its worth it. Only Thing I'd Change: I have a lot of people meet me there for business meetings-I wish there was wireless internet access. Overall I appreciate the Whistle Stop's charm and character which is often times hard to find in Birmingham. read more

"I love Whistle Stop," a friend of mine, who used to live in that part of town, recently said. I hadn't been there in years. I was looking for a quick bite after picking up my car from Classic Appreciation down the street. I remembered my friend saying, "I love Whistle Stop." So, I stopped in for some eggs before running off to another appointment. I got the Caboose, which is basically corned beef hash and eggs. In a nutshell, it was all done perfectly. My sunny sides were appropriately buttery. The hash was cooked perfectly. I had some nice wheat toast on the side. Unfortunately, the place is a bit out-of-sight-out-of-mind for me as I don't live in that part of town, but it certainly deserves repeat visits. read more

I was there this morning and ordered three scrambled eggs to go no toast no condiments just three scrambled eggs. I was quoted a bill of $4.28 which I paid. Went to the ol' whistle stop on a Sunday afternoon. I was delighted immediately upon entering that my gal and I were the only patrons in the place. We were warmly greeted and served beverages right away. The waitress was friendly, polite and prompt. Though I could have done without the staff talking to each other across the restaurant, almost shouting. Before our food arrived, an employee decided that would be the best time to windex all the windows, in my booth as well, which I thought was slightly pre mature on her part. I ordered a BLT with hash browns on the side and my gal had the cinnamon roll FT. The food was very good and the fountain pop was generously carbonated and seemed fresh. She had a side of bacon which was burnt to a crisp,and I found it a smidge on the pricey side, but we'll be back. I didn't use the restroom but the place was clean. The ultra bright florescent lighting really set off the out dated decor, but what can ya do?..... read more

Don't Get Off The Train At This Stop. It's not really fair, but I measure the present restaurant by the Golden Age of its past owners. It has gone through a succession of owners and some were great, offering fresh baked pies, cakes and bread that were so good that it made the next owners seem pedestrian. Right now it's a very pedestrian diner that offers canned corned beef hash, potato pancakes made from reused hash browns and tubes of something that claims to be "sour cream". My visit to the Whistle Stop was one of the very rare occasions when I found a restaurant review to be WAY off-base. The review (actually, more like an interview) appeared in the 8/9/06 issue of the Metro Times and it couldn't have been more glowing; a diner that opened 41 years ago - which was voted among the top ten diners in the *U.S.* (in 2005) by Good Morning America (did someone *bribe* them?!) - and with most customers being "regulars". Supposedly portions are huge. I even had two friends in Birmingham who - when I told them I'd be eating breakfast there (on a Saturday in 9/06) - said I'd really like it and they lamented being unable to join me. Well, I might be the only person ever to eat at the Whistle Stop who left with negative feelings. Firstly, I thought the food was very mediocre (my vegetarian omelet was decent, although "nothing to write home about" - but the toast was almost tasteless and the coffee was just fair). Also, the portions were barely *average* in size (I can't understand how anyone could think the portions were "huge"). Secondly, the service was *also* very mediocre and without any warmth whatsoever (for example; I asked for a coffee refill and never got it. Finally - after quite awhile - I had to waylay a different server. I also asked for a large glass of water and was given a *tiny* glass, after which I eventually found another server to rectify that situation). The owner was at the cash register when I paid and I politely told him of my negative experience/impressions. He told me I was in the minority - and he obviously didn't care *one bit* (even when I told him I live[d] in downtown Detroit [a significant distance] and had eaten there because I'd read the recent review [admittedly I had to be in Birmingham that morning, but he didn't know that]). Certainly he didn't need my business - but that really clinched my feelings about the Whistle Stop, no matter how popular it may be with local residents. read more

The menu was nice as it was almost all breakfast, which was what I was in the mood for (and how I found this place). It is a little pricey for coney quality food, that's my real qualm with this joint. I used to come here with my grandpa 20 years ago to watch him drink coffee and read the paper. Id get donuts or hash browns. Lots has changed between then and now. I can read the menu and don't need donuts to like a place. I'm sure it has changed hands many times. The menu is somewhat large for a place like this. The food here is always great, especially breakfast and the homemade pies and cakes which are semi famous in Metro Detroit. By far though, the reason I eat here at least once a week is the hospitality. Such warm, friendly folks from Elda the owner, to Nicole, Eva and even Derrick and Chuck in the kitchen. Someone had suggested this place for having character and great food. We went there, we realized the character part must have been subjective, since we did not find much of one. But that may have been us. What was clear from our visit thiugh, is that the "great food" is grossly overrated. Eggs smelled uncharacterustically and the dishes were dissappointing.
