i like little diners for breakfast. it always smell good, but that's always the bacon or sausage and since i eat neither, i get suckered in. it's small and just like a standard, home-grown diner. the breakfast menu is pretty extensive and service was quick. the food was mediocre. my coffee cup wasn't filled as curtly as i wished. my wife's omelet was a bit overcooked. which might have been isolated until we overheard a fellow diner ask for his eggs to be re-cooked, so maybe cooking eggs isn't their strong point. i ordered the cinnamon roll french toast. very heavy and dense. i never really tasted the toast itself because i had to drench it in syrup. my side of hash browns had more un-crispy than crispy potatoes, personally not my style. but you live and learn and i'd rather try a local than an IHOP. read more

Very good food, staff, and service. Very clean and well run. Closes at 3 pm, ( be there by 2:30 ) Breakfast and lunch only. Can be a wait during breakfast or lunch rush, otherwise no problem seating. I have been going to the Whistle Stop for years. Although the ownership has changed the food has not (which is a good thing). Everything is fresh and made from scratch. The foul play omelet is my favorite breakfast item to order at the Whistle Stop. In fact it might be my favorite breakfast item anywhere. The turkey is from a fresh turkey breast rather than processed lunch meat. Also the hash browns are worth the calories. I try and come here every time I visit my family in Michigan. read more

COMFORT FOOD done right! I am so glad I found this place. We have struggled to find a good quality restaurant serving comfort food in the Birmingham/bloomfield hills area. Birmingham restaurants especially breakfast places are a mix of gross generic coney islands, or overpriced places full of pretentious DBags preening and posing. Bloomfield hills: forget about it. Donuts at kroger or starbucks. that's it. We favor a relaxed place with great service and high quality food This is a tiny place that could easily be missed. Rather small and intimate inside and I have had to wait a few times for a table. I have encountered nothing but friendly staff here. The first time I took my two small boys and they brought out a box of toys that looked like a toy lost and found. They loved it. I've ordered their chili on almost every occasion and it is spectacular. I make damned good chili, and theirs is very flavorful and just a bit of heat. Nice cumin flavor. I haven't tasted better chili in Detroit. The omlettes are very fluffy and packed with quality fillings. . The potatos O'Brien with cheese are large and full of fresh al dente peppers and onions. I once left a wad of cash at this restaraunt in the booth I was sitting in. Had been here a few times but wouldn't call myself a regular. A small cramped place off the beaten path of downtown Birmingham. If you are not looking you will probably walk right past it. It has amazingly light fluffy banana pancakes, crisp bacon and golden hash browns. Good for weekend breakfast but it will probably be crowded. read more

The food and service is always good here but today I met some friends for breakfast and was not impressed with how the waitress handled a situation. My friends daughter was served French toast. As she began eating we noticed the syrup looked yellow. After inspection we flipped the toast to discover raw egg batter on the underside, it had not been flipped and cooked. I started going to this place in the mid seventies. I've just been there for the last time. Sat at the counter, got my coffee, then was completely ignored for 10 minutes while people all around me , and that were seated well after me , ordered and were served. Its been going downhill for a while but this was just too much. If you can't get served well at a counter , then its pretty much over. read more

Overly crowded for a breakfast you can get anywhere. Tables are too close together. There is no parking lot. Not the place for a peaceful morning breakfast. I usually love,love,love Whistle Stop but after the awful breakfast my girlfriend and I had there this morning I may not be going back for awhile. Rubbery omlettes, undercooked potatoes and half-cut toast...really???? Not to mention that I had to ask more than once for refills of coffee and water, something that I have never experienced at this neighborhood diner. When I did get more coffee, it was served to me in a dirty mug. I heard that the place has new owners (again) and I really hope that they can get it together soon so we don't have to find another breakfast spot. read more

For what it is, a local diner, I'm becoming fond of it. It's not your typical Birmingham brunch - nothing fancy or flashy, just a spot to grab a pretty quick and delicious meal. We live within walking distance so it's a convenience thing for me. I just had the Reuben omelette and it was quite delicious! I also like that you can do a side of pancakes with the omelette instead of potatoes. It comes with 2 pancakes which is a great way to satisfy your sweet tooth after you get your protein! A lot of food for the price, and again, something else that differentiates from standard Birmingham eateries. Interested in getting here more and trying some new items. read more

Whistlestop has been part of the Birmingham scene for at least 4 decades. We find it even better now. Great breakfast burrito, regular or veggie, and the best home made hash browns. All breakfast dishes are really good and service is friendly. No wonder it is still around after all these years. Love this little place! Ate here first time this morning in town on business. Breakfast burrito subbed turkey sausage for regular. Was offered pancakes instead of toast and I was like "duh!" Good move, 2 good size cakes were hot and flavorful. Burrito was great, grilled so the tortilla was warm all the way through. Coffee was immediate and plentiful every time went below half cup - I lost track how many cups I had! Overall service was excellent, quick. They weren't too busy so that made it easier, but the server Eva was very conscious of her tables. All this for $12 plus a nice tip. Only reason not 5 stars is so so decor and an off putting cleaner odor when I first walked in, but as usual, I acclimated to that and didn't notice it after a few minutes. This is a nice little diner. It's food is decent, and the wait is never too long. However, it is cramped, and depending on what you order I've found you love it or hate it. The Whistle Stop Restaurant is a nice place for breakfast without the large crowds. The chocolate chip pancakes are light while buttery and chocolatey. I think they are better than the pancakes at the Original Pancake house. My husband got the "works" omelette, and said it was very good. The food came out very quickly, and service was great. like many I have been going here for more years than I like to admit - some time ago when they were serving I went for dinner their "Hudson's Maurice" was lame. Glad they gave up on dinners. My companion's pot roast was dismal. Now that they are going to Mae's on WW by e-way wonder what they are going to bring to this place. Mae's was totally awesome. They always had a line out the door.
