I really wanted to like this place, it's locale and family owned. I didn't go in the restaurant area but the fresh seafood section. I bought shrimp and red snapper. It only took me a few minutes to get home and when I started cleaning the shrimp it slimy, not fresh seafood slime but old rotted slim. The smell was also horrible I had to throw it out. I wouldn't go here again. There's nothing fresh about the seafood I'm sad to say. Some of the shrimp were turning pink, there were a few fresh, firm shrimp mixed in with what I purchased otherwise the texture was soft and mushy not what you'd expect from fresh seafood. The pros are that the portions are huge and there's outdoor, waterfront "dining" on big informal barrels. However, the biggest con that trumps any kind of pro is that this is supposed to be a fresh fish market ... and yet their seafood is not fresh. I had the fried oysters, which I was very excited about since they were supposedly cornmeal dusted, Southern-style. However, not only were the oysters dry and chewy and extremely briney, they were essentially deep fried cornmeal nuggets. I understand that oysters outside of the Gulf are a lot smaller, but there's no need to quadruple the size with bland breading. My husband got the mussels marinara with linguine, and the mussels were also not fresh, to the point that he was sick afterward because he'd eaten a few bad ones. They were not fully opened, and some actually smelled rancid. And it takes a lot to fell my husband's iron gullet. None of the sauces/dressings are made in-house, and the fish in the shop part was expensive and looked old and dry, or slimy. In other words, there was nothing about this place that was fresh, and that's alarming for a dockside seafood place. Incredibly disappointing. Ugh. read more

What does a mermaid stuck on land do? She goes to this place. The raw bar is a mound of ice with clams, oysters, shrimp, lobster and beer which is the way this mermaid enjoys a Saturday afternoon. The staff totally took care of me and my clueless ways! One of the shucker kids let me try a clam, eh too briney for me! I had a dozen oysters straight up, no cocktail sauce and only a little lemon. Sweet, clean and fresh tasting. I took a live lobster with me to cook up tonight. They have a really nice fish market inside with crabs, fish, and all kinds of mollusks. I'll have to come back for some cooked food since all I did was raw this time. Really enjoyed talking to some of the long island residents who sat down at the bar. I really enjoyed being out at the wharf taking in all the salty air. Great time!! read more

I so miss this place since moving out of New York. It was quaint and small and looks like a fishery/restaurant. You can buy fresh seafood and also get cooked food there. They cook the clams/mussels/ fish right there in front of you and have a menu also. They sometime had soft shell crabs and can special order crawfish also. The guys are so nice and helpful. Its a cute place. You go inside to order and pick up the food in the back. There is a outdoor seating area by the dock. Its a cute place. The food, I got new England clam chowder and that was good. And I got the stuffed clams, they on the other hand were not good. They were so full of bread and hardly any clam or seasoning, something I would never get again here. Baked stuffed clams are of of my favorite things to eat. I will come back sometime and try other stuff on the menu and hopefully have a better experience with the food then. This place is both a fish market and a very very casual seafood restaurant. And both are the real deal, not some pretentious wanna-be upscale place. We tried the market, to buy fresh and cook at home, and it was good. The softshell crab's was cleaned for us by the helpful staff person, and the sea scallops we purchased were simply excellent just sautéed with butter, salt and pepper. Also, the area, right on the water, has a lot of authentic character. Nothing phoney about this place, and that's nice! read more

Busy fish market. I come here for the scallops - fresh and tasty. The prices are on par with other markets I have been at. During the summer, they open up a raw bar in the back. Very no frills - couple of kids sitting outside near a pile of ice and clams and a bucket of beer, ready to fill your order. Plastic tables, not a great view. Haven't eaten at the raw bar yet - wish the atmosphere was a bit better, but will try it out soon and update review. read more

Ist time using this place for x mas seafood and I won't be back. I order clams opened with the juice on the side every year from B & B fish and clam. They put the juice on the side for me so I can make my baked clams. Ordered the same way but got a bunch of clam shells with clams and juice mixed together. The crab cakes were all breading with no crab. The raw shrimp cocktail was handled With no gloves on along with the other food prepared. Great place, very casual atmosphere.... Hidden Gem of Islip. You can literally order fish that you see coming off local fishing boats that dock there in the morning... can't get any fresher than that. Friendly staff, the chef is kind of ornery and people have related him to a specific Seinfeld episode (you'll figure it out). Great place in the summer, awesome raw bar and dining on the dock, great place in the winter to grab some hearty soups on those exceptionally cold days. Highly recommend! read more

Bought some excellent fresh salmon and scallops from this spot for the green egg at our friends house. Pleasant service and great price for the quality and freshness of the fish. Only consideration is some of the fish is deboned and it can beat the fish up a bit, if the visual doesn't bother you the, no issue! read more

I grew up in LI but live in Fl now. I have been going here each time I visit ...this time was not so good. I felt that there was way too much breading on the very small shrimp. I paid for baked clams and did not get them and the side of cole slaw was the cheapest. We had the baby scrod and that was good ...service was very slow and no one was there. read more

White Cap is also a fish market, and they'll even deliver to the Fire Island freight ferry so you can get fresh seafood on the island. We had five 1.25lb lobsters delivered on a freight ferry, and we turned them into fresh, delicious lobster rolls for an evening picnic. It was $81 total for the five lobsters and delivery charges. Great service. Great service. Great service. I had a very trying day before coming in. The staff worked in a group of four to clean all of my blue crabs so they were easy to cook. They put lobsters and oysters on ice for the long drive home. I wished I live closer. The prices were very reasonable. Went here thinking it was Dean's seafood. Ordered lobster raviolis w/ bisque in place of marinara and mussel app. Mussels were alright, but raviolis in bisque were flavorless; I assume they use the seafood bisque soup as sauce for raviolis and that was flavorless as well. I looked at raviolis when I bit one and inside you can see what looks like all lobster. But I cannot taste the lobster flavor, a little confusing as lobster has its own taste. Anyway will try Deans when I get the chance as this place is a little pricey. read more

Very nice place to stop for a quick seafood dinner.. no service, but the staff is friendly and helpful. We ate outside (2 adults & 3 children) and it was a nice relaxing evening.. kids could get up and move a bit.. there were ducks and swans and everyone was very relaxed and happy... food was delish.. and there was quite a bit of it!! Great atmosphere delicious seafood lots of fun, it can get pricey if you're really hungry but if you're just going for a late snack and a couple of drinks it's about normal pricing for seafood. There's loads of parking and the location is kind of cool set behind some old buildings and right on the water. They cook your food right there you actually speak to the man cooking it when you order and it comes out exactly the way you ask. Jesus Christ wtf happened at White Cap? Was one of our favorite places...till tonight. Place empty. 2 of us walk in ahead of a foursome, 2 adults, 2 rugrats. 30 min later , THEY get fed. One of us walk in and are told, 'it's coming out soon". 5 min later I walk in and ask for $ back. "it's coming out now". Mussels ordered in white sauce, is in red sauce, cold. Fries almost cold. Lobster roll, marginal no chunks, just the shredded shit from the legs. Boss offered $back. So disgusted that i just walked away. He's gonna need it more than me. Wine; FUGGEDABOUTIT. Knew better but bought a bottle of rose piss. Noticed they're advertising for almost a complete redo of staff. GOOD FUCKING LUCK, YOU'RE GONNA NEED IT.
