We called and they said they were open until 5 pm but they were closed at 4:38 pm. Maybe it was a blessing in disguise. It smells really fishy which is not a good sign. We left since they weren't very welcoming.

The fish and service were great. Also very reasonably priced. We ordered the swordfish and jumbo shrimp. Highly recommend.

Popped into this lovey, wood polished establishment for lunch and ordered up crispy juicy coconut shrimp app along with a bowl of lobster bisque soup to start. The soup was creamy and delicious with big lobster chunks, not having to hunt for it or just tasting seafood broth here ;) Both came out quick and were on point. Personally followed that up with a hot a buttery lobster roll. It was fresh and juicy even before adding a bit more butter. They serve it up on a proper roll that was slightly toasted but soft with each bite. My Mr had two of the juiciest lobster tails with cole slaw and a garden salad. Sadly couldn't stay to try out a dessert since we had the baby wanting their liquid lunch too, but know the wait staff was super sweet and quick getting all that was needed and asked for super timely. *Noted: Street and municipal parking lot available. Good stable Koala changing table in the ladies room.

I had the clam linguini, and it was one of the best ones I've tried. My pasta came with a side salad, which was fresh and tasty. The coconut margarita was too good! Had to get another one. My husband had the lobster roll. Our friends had the seafood paella (which was devoured) and fried oysters. The fried oysters tasted more like dough than oysters though.

By far and away the worst I've experienced. I took away a star for this reason. The new spot aesthetically is just okay. As always with local restauranteurs little to no attention paid to the noise level. My ears were bleeding throughout dinner. The restaurant needs decor which creates a warmer inviting presence. Our food was delicious but the wait time for the meals and drinks was insufferable. BTW, the wait time for the check was equally as painful. To the owners, get your (you know what) together and figure this out. You will not succeed unless immediate improvements are made.

When we entered the…read moreestablishment, the seating area was empty, by the time we left, at around 5:00 PM, the place was getting crowded. We ordered fried calamari as appetizers and a zuppa di pesce - while zuppa is translated as soup in English, the dish is closer to what may be considered a fish stew. In addition to the fried calamari we also ordered a large salad that we split. Cova is a unique restaurant that serves dinner in a family-style format. This means that the entrees are designed to be shared between two or four people. While the food is excellent, for a hungry person, the amount per serving is not worth the price. Unfortunately, the cappuccino maker was not in service, so I ordered a regular cup of decaffeinated coffee. Regrettably, the coffee was not to my liking. The Takeaways: 1. The food is very tasty. 2. The coffee is not good. 3. The price to portion ration is poor. 4. Parking is ample. 5. Make reservations.

I just heard back from Culpers 1778 today, after reaching out again (there was an email problem,…read moreoriginally). I will finalize my updated review after I try their burger & fries again. I got the replacement burger & fries and they were good - no problems this time. The burger and fries are more than enough for one person (in fact, the two of us split them and still had some leftover fries). Also, as a bonus, they gave us a brussel sprout & bacon side dish. Even though it was sweeter than we normally like, it was very good. In summary this was a big improvement over our earlier experience and we thank Culpers 1778 for giving us the opportunity to try them again.

I delay writing reviews until I have had ample time to try a venue, and after I've read other…read morereviews to see if the shortcomings are a one-off or a pattern. I tried meals here on three separate occasions, twice on weekends and once during the week. My review depicts the summary of my experiences. Set back in a shopping center, the size of the restaurant is deceiving. The venue is tremendous, and the decor and bar present a welcoming environment. On all occasions, I was greeted right away and walked to my table. On one particular evening, we were seated in the back room. The first thing I noticed were how quickly the food runners were moving through the dining space. There seemed to be an urgency about their movement. The appetizers I've enjoyed were the duck arancini, mushrooms, and the oysters. All served hot, fresh, and the seasoning was on-point. The oysters came with a mini Tabasco sauce bottle and cocktail sauce. I was less enthralled by their entrees, a pattern that was sadly not a one-off or "bad night" for me. The beef Wellington was served well done, even though medium-rare was ordered. On another occasion, I ordered the surf and turf; the filet came out well done instead of medium-rare, and the lobster was rubbery and overly salted. It was served without drawn butter. They cooked another steak for me, but it came out medium (still incorrect) and had no seasoning whatsoever. A bland and tasteless filet after previously eating an underwhelming overcooked beef Wellington was enough for me to deduce that, after two visits, incorrectly cooking steak was not a mistake, but a pattern. Our table was cleared of appetizer plates and utensils, but no new utensils were provided. Our entrees were served shortly thereafter, and began to get cold as we waited for someone to come over and bring us forks and knives. We waited and asked three different people before finally getting some. All of us ordered some type of cocktail or wine with our meals, yet still drank water, and our water glasses were not refilled once during any of my visits. The staff running all over to collect dirty dishes were out of sync with the servers and the kitchen, and unable to get a pulse on the diners. I did not see a manager or any type of supervisor circulating, but these are fixes that can be easily made with proper oversight. Runners were aimlessly running back and forth and just grabbing whatever dishes were done. Their timing was way off. I really wanted to like this place and include it in my regular rotation. I thought with time they would get the rhythm of the dining room down, but I spaced my visits months apart and not much changed. I wish them well, but it will be a pass from me going forward.

Limited beer selection would be the only thing I would change but you can find something that works. Wine selection is decent. We had the Mussels in a wine sauce which were very good, the oysters Rockefeller which were the best I've ever had, including when I make them, the fish and chips which were outstanding and the brussels sprouts which were also very good. Reservation was easy to make on Resy. We arrived a bit early and they took us in no problem. We've tried a number of places in PJ and we've really enjoyed most of them but I think we're going to be regulars at Castaways. It was really tremendous!

The restaurant was packed, but people were also finishing up their meals so we gave it a shot. We were able to sit outside and the outside dining area was set up really nice and comfortable with bistro lighting and even some potted palm trees. Felt more like San Diego than Port Jefferson. Inside was also tastefully done up in the nautical theme which is good to know if it's a rainy day or in the colder weather. I've read some reviews about the service and we had the exact opposite with super attentive service. Our server, Brianna came over right away and took our order in no time. I mentioned doing a dish gluten free and she asked if I had celiac. She went above and beyond making sure that my meal would be safe to eat and offered substitutions so there would be no cross contamination. I've had the condition for 18 years so I know pretty well what I can tolerate and that most places let you down and I just deal with it. That wasn't the case at all here and Brianna made sure of it. We started off with the spinach artichoke dip and this was one of the best versions I ever had. Like in the top 3 really and one the other two was home made. It was that good. I had plenty of carrots and celery to nosh on with the dip and they kept the bread on a separate plate altogether. Like I said, they really understood my condition I also had bariatric surgery back in the winter and I'm slowly venturing out in the world of solid food. So I picked the surf and turf steak and lobster sandwich. I figured I know I can handle steak if done right and I wouldn't be too bummed if I couldn't tolerate the lobster. Brianna had it served to me on a really good gluten free bun. This sandwich really worked out so much better than I thought it would. The steak was exactly to order and the lobster was super tender. I was only able to have maybe a fifth to a quarter of it. That's equally because that's all I can physically have these days and because the sandwich was beyond huge. The rest of the family's choices were home runs too and included a killer wedge salad, a perfectly cooked burger and salmon. Those were devoured so no complaints with those as well. It should be noted by the reactions by everyone at the adjacent tables were having a very similar experience and it was just a really enjoyable time. Our family is getting older (aren't we all), so diners and moments like this are so special. Castaways definitely held up its end of the bargain. I'm so glad we stopped in, and I can't wait to stop back the next time we're down port.
