We came last night and they happened to have a speaker talking about the history of the building and had ghost stories and whatnot! So much fun, I loved it. The White Eagle is one of the few exceptions I will make in setting foot in a McMenamin's establishment. Although I usually don't go out of my way to come here, they do have an occasional live show I am compelled to attend. Although the prices are of the usual McMenamin's overpriced standard, the food is much better than any of their other establishments, so I don't leave feeling quite as cheated... I recommend the popcorn shrimp and a Ruby Ale. With cheap rooms for rent in their upstairs area, The White Eagle is also connected to part of Portland's legendary Shanghi Tunnels and is rumored to be actively haunted. read more

This is a good place to hear music. My friend's band plays here once in awhile (the fabulous sound of Ellen and the Felons), and I have seen them here twice. I have seen other shows, and eaten lunch here on several occasions. The crowd is usually low-key, and the seating is comfortable, though if you sit near the front of the house, you don't have much of a view of the small stage. The bartenders have a heavy pour, and I think a call drink was probably 5 bucks, because my bill was 25. I guess it could have been 6.25, but all I know is that after several Beam and Cokes, my bike walked me home last night. This is worth the fourth star right here, because the food is really a 3 star affair. It is a McMenamin's, after all. read more

After our 10 hour drive from SF, the White Eagle was great. The hotel was so cute, even the shared bathroom/shower system didn't throw me. $50 a night, how crazy is that? With restaurant and free live music below? So cozy inside, also with (heated?) outside patio area. We stayed in, had a few beers, a little dinner, and just soaked in the music. Folk-sy that night, but so chill. Passed out on the bed, ready for the next leg of the trip. Wished we had more time to explore Portland. Next time... next time. (whats the hell, it was haunted? So I stayed here a couple years ago by complete accident. I was traveling with my boyfriend and all the hostels we wanted to stay at were booked, so we told the taxi driver to take us somewhere reasonably cheap for the night. To sum it up, I had never heard of the history of the place and we payed for two nights because it was cheap and I really liked the friendly vibe and atmosphere. We stayed up drinking at the bar that night until last call, the mediocre music didn't bother me and it kind of added to the strange charm of the place. Our room was super clean and I loved that they still had the little sink from the brothel days. We meandered the halls checking out the odd murals on the walls and I would have to say the end of the hall is pretty creepy. It just has that cold sensation like something/someone is there. I don't know, but I didn't want to stand there very long. So before bed I lit some travel candles ( I know bad idea at a hotel) I usually carry and set them on a stand by the sink. Next thing I know my dress catches on fire. I know it doesn't seem that far fetched, but the way it happened was more than bizarre. First off, I was standing about 10 inches away from the flame washing my face and my boyfriend said he saw it happen and it looked as if some force literally ignited the flame and it jumped up as if someone had sprayed some hairspray or something on it. It made a "boooshhh" sound and I have never seen fire travel so fast. Luckily it was put out, but I couldn't help but feel like something defied science here. We went to sleep and the next thing I know my boyfriend is waking me up in sheer terror telling me someone was in the room and yup...he saw a damn ghost. He said he was sort of drifting off when suddenly at the foot of the bed he saw a small dark figure of a girl with an old style hat complete with a lace shroud. He couldn't make out the face and it was mostly dark. He said he saw its eyes though and it moved closer to the bed and then split in two and that is definitely was not a friendly one. He was scared shitless and wrapped around me the rest of the night, covers completely pulled up until the sun came up. Needless to say we didn't stay the second night. We were both totally spooked and when we told the concierge/bartender that we wanted a refund and to leave, he had a strange air of knowingness as to why. No hassle though, got a refund and a very truly spooky experience. read more

This is the second time I've stayed here. First time was in feb. loved the funky style shared showers and overall rock and roll vibe. I stayed in the room furthest from the stage. So decided to book again for June. First rooms are incredibly hot with no way to ventilate. So I would say if you're booking on the summer prepare to be really hot in your room. Second I was right above the stage for all five nights and if you want to sleep before the band is done playing forget it. It will not happen. I did not mind as I was binge watching The Wire. Through my own fault - owning my mistake - I did not check it on the right day. Nobody's fault but mine. So okay I'll pay for an extra night, but I needed to get back home. I called after the housekeeping had left for the day so I paid for what would be an empty room. Still no problem, it was worth the extra 65 to leave early and see my kid. I asked if I could be comped a meal or drink. No dice. Still and all I guess what was the last straw was having to wait 40 min to check out. Something about the printer not working, but if you make someone wait that long a drink might be nice. Won't be checking in again. read more

I really like this place! Sometimes Mcmenamins service can be awful (see Blue Moon) and sometimes it's great. At this place, it's definitely great! It's a really gorgeous building which is honestly enough to make me want to hang out here. Not a ton of options as far as things to eat for vegans which is as per usual for a Mcmenamins's spot so I don't fault them for it. Great ambiance and attentive service even though we only ordered drinks. I'll definitely be back to this neighborhood spot. read more

I heard it whispered that it is akin to the famous, now deceased Sweetwater in Mill Valley, CA, but the White Eagle has managed to grasp at it's own character. I've been there a couple times to see a certain band play, and it's never disappointed. The exposed brick and funky atmosphere mix together to bring a cozy saloon feel where you can listen to live music almost any night of the week. Plus, sometimes when it's 28 degrees outside it feels VERY good to get a warm apple cider and some tater tots to share with your friends. read more

I've only been once, which was today. And I agree with the other yeeps that it is just another McMenamins, with one exception. Ghosts. That's right, vodka and bourbon aren't the only spirits in this joint. I didn't have breakfast today, on purpose because I knew I was coming here for lunch. I had the White Eagle Burger with tots, and it hit the spot in the way that a spot hitter hits it. Just like the alphabet district, the Japanese Gardens....and a few other places, we just happened across the White Eagle Saloon. It's in an odd neighborhood so its weird we found it...but we did. Mediocre beer, mediocre food, BAD fries, mediocre service. Yep it's definitely a McMenamins. Will someone please explain to me the appeal of McMenamins fries. They are ALWAYS greasy soggy and most of the time cold, yet people rave about them, I'm confused. The interior of the White Eagle is cool but I need more than interesting decor if I am going to frequent an establishment. I am reluctant to give it 3 stars because as far as the lodging, it is not for everyone. I think I am a open-minded, middle aged guy who will tolerate a lot. This is stretching it a bit. Lodging: A real deal for the Portland area ($50.00), but No one tells you it is 25 steps up wooden stairs and no elevator, which can be tough if you are schlepping your suitcases up those creaky stairs after traveling all day. the room is just for sleeping and not much else. The room is just barely big enough for a bed, a night stand, and a chair. Bed was nice, sheets clean. The window that was in my room faced a wall (?) You'd have to see it. I could hear the band playing until 3 a.m. I sleep like a rock, but a lighter sleeper might not appreciate the late night going on. Toilet was down the hall and very narrow. Showers (2) were barely big enough to mover around in. And speaking of coming out of the shower, this goes to the woman who saw my man-titties; Yes, they're real. Food: typical bar food, but the late night special was good-I had a burger, salad and spinach dip for ten bucks. The live show I saw when I was there was this guy whose name escapes me but one of his songs was "you gotta give a f**k aout something". He was very friendly and spoke to me after his set about some of the things to see in Portland. Thanks for the tip about the Jazz club. For the over 30 crowd, it might be a bit much, but for mommie's little free spirit/vegan/socialist/bisexual muse, this is manna from heaven. If nothing else, it will give the fossils like me something to talk about for a while. read more

The White Eagle Rock n Roll Hotel is one of Portland's oldest and most haunted saloons. Legen has it that upstairs was a brothel and downstairs was an opium den. Today the up and downstairs are not filled with such exciting activity. The main floor is the McMenamins restaurant and saloon and upstairs is the hotel. There are 11 original rooms upstairs and some are located above the mainstage in the back of the building so it may not be for the light sleeper. McMenamins operates this location in a similiar way to its other "non-chain" restaurants and bars. The food at the White Eagle is just like other McMen's. Its burgers- and -fries and the waitstaff are never in a hurry to bring them to you. The beer however is of their own brewing so you've got options. The rad thing about White Eagle is that they have some form of live music everynight. Its not too loud during the weeknights, so don't worry about having to yell over your fries. Bring cash on the weekends, cover can be 5 or 6 bucks sometimes. There is an awesome side patio for beer time in the summer. Its also a great escape for fresh air on nights when it can get a little smoky in the bar area. read more

Usually a great time and great atmosphere, but had a bad experience here a bout a year ago when I went with my friend who was visiting from Israel. He has a bit of an accent, and as we were placing our very FIRST drink order, (had only been to dinner prior with zero drinks), the woman said "I'm sorry but I cannot serve you any alcohol" to him. We were confused as to why, as she had agreed to take my drink order with no hesitation, and upon asking her why she would not serve him she said "he's slurring". I could not believe it. We had had zero alcoholic beverages up to this point! I explained that he has an accent, not a slur, and asked to speak to a manager whom I was told was not there. After 5 minutes she agreed to take his drink order after he pulled out his passport showing why he has "a slur". She simply said "sorry, my mistake" in a half effort tone. After that we were ignored and decided to leave. Usually the staff is great here, but I will turn around if I ever see this woman working again. Wrong on so many levels. read more

I poked my head into the saloon not intending to stay. The music got me and I decided to have one brew at the bar. I had my camera, the usual tourist, but no one gave me a hard time. The six percent IPA whetted my thirst to try the 8 percent IPA. And then I smelled food, so ordered the fish and chips. Can't eat without another brew... As I sat at the beautiful bar that dates back to 1905, I noticed people checking into the hotel upstairs. I wanted to stay at the hotel upstairs and screw the cat lady at my crappy AirBnB. But they didn't have rooms for that night. Cool place. I will return. read more

well, there were only bunk rooms available by the time we booked, so that had an impact...we both ended up sleeping on the bottom bunk---cosy! overall---good. the bathroom (toilet) was one door down and the showers were at the end of the hall. clean showers, good water pressure. i was a little paranoid the whole weekend about seeing "something" (haunting rumors/legend/propaganda) but nothing happened. the music went late sat. night, downstairs, but we didn't care. we knew that going in. overpriced beer downstairs, but they do have RC cola, so that's a plus. cool history upstairs (on the walls). we didn't eat there, only slept there and got a few drinks. for $45/night, i would recommend! but you have to know what you're in for. read more

I was watching the BIO channel during the weekend and they mentioned the White Eagle. I thought ... hey I was there last summer. I ended up watching the short portion covering the haunting stories of the hotel. Now I'm writing a review. So, yes, it appears there are stories of the White Eagle being haunted. Not scary at all, it just made last years summer trip more interesting. The main floor consists of a bar and upstairs consists of the few hotel rooms, which were supposedly old brothel rooms - COOL! The bar alone is busy, friendly, welcoming, and they serve the Mcmenamin's beers that were all enjoyable. In the evening they have bands play in the bar, a plus, but a negative at the same time. The music may be too loud which may be very irritating for those upstairs trying to sleep. The music may not be the greatest, but there is an outside patio for you to chill and drink. Best part of our stay was finishing every night in Portland on their patio killing our livers, munching on tattertots, playing cards, and stumbling to our haunted floor. We found a few things creepy and we did have creepy experiences. First mine. As I was unpacking I heard a swooshing sound. I looked on the bed and my water bottle was swooshing like someone just sat on the bed jiggling the bottle. That next morning, my friend swore it felt someone was brushing against the balls of his feet while sleeping - I like to pretend he was molested buy some spirit with a foot fetish -HAHA. The bathrooms, showers, and the end of the hallway are creepy. Their two bathrooms are tight and not for the claustrophobic. The showers, that are separate from the bathroom, give you the vibe someone is watching you. At the end of the hallway is room 5 where supposedly a prostitute was murdered. That end of the hallway just gives you the hebbe jebbies. Loved the place. We made the best of our visit. Knowing that its supposedly haunted just made the stay more interesting. read more

Admit it, you love being scared. You even like being creeped out at times. The Eagle has STUFF going for it. Sure, it has the "comfort" factor that all McMenamins have, but this place has a bit more. It's a haunted old whore house. Literally! In 1972, way before the McMenamin boys were around we IRS Collection rookies would hang out here after hours. It was a biker bar then, and the neighborhood was tough. You had to prove you could chew glass before they'd let you in, and the scrawny redhead chose which of you she'd drag away later as she shot pool with ya. The place used to have late night blues on occasion. Not sure if it still does. You can spend the night too. I wonder if that bone scrawny redhead still hangs out there. For all I know she was a whore-ghost in 1972. Let me think on that for awhile. Raise a glass here. You like scary, creepy, and it's Halloween. GO! read more

Popped in here on my way to a wedding rehearsal across the street for a quick beer. Didn't eat anything on the menu or even really look at it. This review is based solely on my albeit quick experience. Staff was INCREDIBLY friendly, place looked really clean, and the over-all vibe was great.
