OMG y'all I found the coolest bar to hop to tonight" my friend texted me "A Mortuary from the 1930s". I laughed "bet the food is to die for and The drinks.... Killer!!!" Stopped by around 330pm. It was really hot outside today and not much cooler inside. Luckily this was a neat spot so I ordered a cold cider and settled in. It was happy hour and Vera Cruz fish tacos were calling. Again. Im hooked! These were so good. Carl the bartender was friendly. I asked for hot sauce and he brought over some Dark Star. Not spicy, but great flavor.This was a new neighborhood for me. I'll have to come back to explore more when it's not in the 90's. read more

I can't comment on the food, we were there for drinks and the ambiance and it did not disappoint. The chapel is adorable, there was a real wood fire going, booth seating in church pews and they even got an organ and someone played contemporary songs on it. How cool is that? We had nice stiff drinks and the bartender was super sweet and made sure we always had drinks. They got a private parking lot a huge plus in tight neighborhoods. read more

I love this space. It's charming, concise, and full of opportunity, in my opinion. I've been to Chapel Pub a few times, and it is still one of my favorite McMenamins locations in Portland. I will always enjoy sitting in one of the pews sipping a pint while chatting politics. This last time, however, I was not impressed by the food. The tavern green salad was not up to par with other McMenamins locations so I felt like I was at a roadhouse dive bar rather than in my charming pub chain. That said, I'll still go back. The food and drink is the same as every other McMenamins and it's not my favorite. I did really like the vibe of the restaurant and the overall feel of the place. Church pews as seats are just as uncomfortable as in church on Sunday but once your bottom falls asleep you can hardly tell. The stone work is beautiful and so are the many fireplaces they have throughout the building. I'd love to see what it's like on a rainy Portland day in the winter. I can imagine that it would be a great place to pop in, grab a beer, and warm up. The staff was great and handled our larger party well. read more

I'm prefacing this by saying we had a big group (30+) and it took 1 hour wait time to get our food orders in. There were only 2 or 3 people at most in the restaurant but they had to take care of the drinks first. It wasn't that efficient in my opinion and when I approached a gal at the bar, she said she can't help me. Food did come out within 30 minutes and it was around 8pm. Did I still tip? Yes, 18%. He remembered we needed water and gave us a pitcher and brought us what we needed. NO apologies on his end. Next time, I probably would only do a custom tip for a very slow, unapologetic service. read more

My favorite pub with its smoky interior and cozy feel. The tater tots enhance the whole experience. Charm oozes from every detail without being overwhelming. It's a great pub with typically good service (and that predictable McMenamins' service curse every 4th or fifth visit). My advice for that lull? We went here for a quick cider. First time at this location. Kinda homey and quaint. They had books right by the booths and board games were available too. It was quite nice. It's located at a busy street. Lots of nearby restaurants. They had a nice patio seating available outside. Street parking only. They had private events rooms available too. I love the shrubbery around this Mcmenamins. Very nice to have a neighborhood walk to this location. They had a wood stove in the back with an area for firewood. Wanted to have a nice birthday dinner for my mom here and I was disappointed with the service and food. Took a long time to order. We ordered steak medium well and it came very well done so waiter took it back and waited an extra 20 minutes only for the steak to be well done again. Tables were very sticky & area was not clean. Waiter never came by to see if we needed refills or if the food was OK, I haven't been here in a very long time because of things like this every time I came here and it will be a very long time by before I ever come back. There is a lot and enough street parking. Nice building with character. Clean property and clean washrooms. Service much to be desired. Took an hour to place order. No apologies. When we went to the bar to ask for help the person there said they only make the drinks. Food came out thirty plus minutes later. Ordered the turkey dip and a cider. One star for McMenamins' mission - I love that they rehab unique spaces and keep them in the community. One star for their drink menu and the cozy vibes in this place. Minus three stars for their truly terrible "service." We sat at a table for 30 minutes, and in that time, a server came by the table and dropped off two menus without a word. No one came by to take an order despite it not being busy and servers walking around the restaurant. It was super weird, and rude. No thanks! I like the layout of this pub, and its multiple wings filled with booths and tables, branching off the former nave, where they have sacriligeously placed the bar. Yep. Dead center. We're all going to Hell, now. Thanks, guys! If we're lucky, maybe we'll be too drunk to notice? Haha! Due to the pouring rain and mid-November chill outside, they had the furnace going full-tilt, as well as the fireplace(s?), because it was as hot as Hell inside, too! Didn't help that we sat at a booth only 10 feet from that black iron crucible. Luckily, my Moscow Mules kept the infernal heat at bay, while spending a few hours writing and engrossed in my work. My wife and I split a hummus plate near the end, which has all the usual offenders, is expectedly delicious, and just right for the price. Despite working up a sweat (we could have moved, but we liked it), this may be my favorite of all the McMenamins pubs (excluding hotels). The atmosphere is warm (have I driven that point home yet?!), cozy, quiet and relaxing. A great place to read, study or just chill; a welcome alternative to the frantic fervor of a coffee shop or sports bar. The next time I need to get some work done, and need a little buzz to keep the creative juices flowing, this is where you'll find me. read more

Interesting McMenamins location... that's for sure! The chapel architecture is very unique and offers something a bit more memorable dining experience for atmosphere and location. As usual the food is solid. One great thing I can always say is that each McMenamins location I go to the food is consistent across the board. The stop here as far as ordering goes was very light. I just ordered a cup of soup. I had a good seafood chowder while Steve had a salad. As usual we are on a quest to get stamps for our passport and we did indeed get it. Despite having very simple orders from us and the place not being very busy service was very slow. I'm not too sure what was going on there. read more

It was a little slow on a late Sunday afternoon, and I was easily warmed up with good service, a pint of stout, and a nice half sandwich (grilled tuna) and soup (veggie tortilla). He immediately sat us and was very pleasant. Kids ordered scooby snacks which were mini corn dogs. Food came out burnt. Mcmenamins fries - large portion. Fries were a little soggy. But they came out nice and hot. Vera cruz cod tacos - excellent! Sauce was spicy but it was just right for my taste. Visited the area and this was walking distance from the event. Inside is a little dark but it is fitting for the building ... loved the antique feel of the place. Service was amazing and she followed up often to make sure we had everything we needed. The bacon cheeseburger was cooked perfectly and seasoned just right ... the tots were way better than the fries! The Portland Dip was fantastic ... sautéed mushrooms, Swiss cheese, and deli turkey with au jus dip. Lots of room inside that it felt as if we were the only customers. We used to go to a McMenamins at least twice a week sometimes more. It was our favorite place to just grab some amazing fresh cut fries and a beer if we were meeting up after errands or such. But in the past 5 or so years (pre pandemic even) we just started getting less good service and subpar food for higher prices. We actually almost stopped going. Then the other night we were in the mood for the old feeling of sitting at a McMenamins and decided to visit the Chapel Pub. First disappointment was at 6:00 in the evening being out of sourdough bread. So two of my choices were off the table as they just don't translate the same on wheat bread. Then the fries came!! What in the world happened to McMenamins famous fries! We were served fries that looked straight from a Sysco truck. For this you charge $10.50 for a small side! Come on guys! Our food was less than enjoyable and for a company that keeps opening new places, seems maybe they need to slow down on expansion and go back to caring about food quality. My husband's exact words after paying the bill were "I don't need to go to a McMenamins again". Thats pretty sad from a guy that asked me to meet him there sometimes 4 times a week. I guess some times you just can't go home again. I'm only giving 2 stars because our server was sweet as pie. And beer seemed same as always. read more

I eat at McMenimans a lot. My favorite Salad is the Aztec salad with grilled chicken, which is organic. Thank you for making it organic! Love the service here and is right across the street from where I work at PCC. They always have a Porter that like, and they always are friendly. This location in particular is quiet frequently and so the service is usually quick. read more

Things do happen that is not under the control of the establishment. Understandable. Would still want to dine there for the experience; time allowing since it is quite the drive from across the bridge to the North. As an added note, The server did apologize and was very nice about us leaving on our first visit. He was just really so busy. McMenamin's is so great for ambience, but really has crummy food . Tonight , I ordered off the happy hour menu. The food was something I might throw together on a really busy night when I have not grocery shopped. The caesar salad was straight from a Costco bag. The veggie sliders were frozen garden burgers , which would be ok except they were SO DRY. I couldn't take more than a bite . A little dollop of hummus was the only thing to break up the dryness and that was not much of a help. Both meat burgers ordered by my party were over cooked . This is one of my favorite McMenamins. Most likely it's because of the history behind it (you'll have to visit it and learn more). There's a small parking lot yet I have never had a problem getting parking. Fresh Oranges and Fresh Grapefruit! Yep, if you order a screwdriver or greyhound, they squeeze the juice right there. It really makes a difference in the drink. Yum! It's nice to come on a cold day because of the warm fireplace. Perfect for keeping your feet warm. One star off for mediocre service. We have been here for over two hours. Ordered food an hour and 15 minutes ago and still have no food. The server is extremely unfriendly. We brought people from out of town and are extremely embarrassed. We have had to ask for water several times and when it was brought to our table of 11, the server basically dropped the pitchers at the end of the table and walked away. Our 6th McMenamins stop in a week (we're working through our passport) and by far the WORST! For the 1st time in my life, I left zero tip. It was deserved. After ordering drinks and food, we were abandoned. Cook or some other wait staff brought the food (late and the buns on both burger and sandwich were burned). Asked for a second round of drinks at that time and they never came. Another employee stopped by to change out menus and said, I think she's bringing your drinks right now. Still nothing. Delicious first bites until you realize there is WAY too much salt. Like hurts your tongue and you can't finish your plate. With the cheese fondue, my tongue couldn't even find the taste of cheese, it was like hot salty glue. The tacos were nice though.
