Great atmosphere in an off-the-beaten path neighborhood. This particular McMennamins bar is located in a light industrial area and is something you are likely to drive past and not even realize it's there. If you decide to stop in and you're looking for a good atmosphere, you won't be disappointed. The interior is made up like a old-time saloon, but without that generic TGI Fridays feel. If it's one thing the McMennamin's get right, it's the atmosphere and White Eagle is no exception. There is also a very lovely patio to the side of the bar that is covered with lush foliage and beautifully lit with string lights. The service is, well...it's a McMennamins, so it's hardly perfect, but I have no horror stories from this location. Come for the atmosphere and frequent live music and you will be happy. read more

As a hotel, it's very bare bones: no phone, no TV, no private bath. Rooms tend to be small unless you go for the queen size up in the front of the building. These however are extremely loud when the windows are open at night. The bar itself is beautiful and tends to be pretty empty during they day. The staff members are some of the nicest I've come across anywhere, but maybe that's just a Portland thing. The drinks are a little on the pricy side. The varieties of house-made beer are underwhelming, but the gin is actually quite good. The food is also better than average bar fare. And the patio is great during a nice summer day. Free wi-fi as well. The music, on the other hand, is not my cup of tea. It tends to be acoustic folk-rock hippie kind of crap that throws me into a blind rage whenever I hear it. Stayed here on a Saturday night last summer, the downstairs a blazing with live music and tater tots galore being served. mmmm, tots. My room was pretty dang quiet for there being loud music downstairs, I could even keep the window open into the courtyard, and the noise wasn't bad. Went in the middle of the day on a Saturday and there was one bartender working. Had to walk up and place my drink and food order, but he was very apologetic and polite (Surprising for a Mcmenimans) Enjoyed the food and a really good nitrate beer, typical Mcmenimans food, but upon receiving the check the bartender informed me he had payed for our beers since we had to wait so long. I will be going back if I ever get a craving for some Cajun tots simply because of the great service. Amazing decor as well! Really cool old Portland building read more

An addendum to my previous review... Husband and I ordered a gin and soda, whiskey rocks, and a bottle of Rainier. I don't know if the bartender is drunk, stoned, or what. He asked us twice if we needed menus, and then asked if he'd asked us about the menus. He then could not remember our drinks, and asked us repeatedly what they were. I sauntered in on Sunday night around 9pm. My boyfriend plays guitar and they host an open mic every Sunday night from 7-10:30ish or so. The only catch is that you have to sign up around 6.. and each performer only gets to sing one song. This is nice, because if someone sucks then it is short and sweet. Kind of sad, though, because you might have to hang around for like 4 hours to sing one song (or watch one that you really wanted to see). But, apparently you can get pretty drunk in 4 hours. Most of the performers were on the Shitfaced side of life by the time I arrived. Or at least charmingly plastered. The whole joint is on the long and narrow side of things. There is a bit of a partition in the middle, so if you just want to eat and drink and pretend the performers aren't really there, you can hang out in the front of the room. The bar is looooong enough that you can probably seat about 10 or 12, but there was only one bartender on staff while I was there. The drink menu also had some snazzy sounding coctails (including a Spanish style coffee that took like 5 minutes alone to prepare). I had the Burning Furnace, which is bourbon, hot apple cider, lemon, complete with cinnamon stick. Was pretty tasty, but I'm sad to report that the "fresh apple cider" was freshly made.. from a packet. It is a decent sized drink though, and comes in a little snifter for around 5 bucks. I also tasted the Ruby, a pint that was 4 bucks and really did taste fruity, but I'd say more like raspberry than a grapefruit. It also didn't taste very alcoholic; my boyfriend confirmed that it is actually about a 6%. I am one of the alcoholic types that tends to not bother with swallowing anything under at least 9%. That is my bare minimum for useless calories that I can drink. The menu was boring. I was hungry but also uninspired. I waited until 10 to order off the happy hour menu. I ordered for myself and for the boy and we each had a quarter pounder ($4 each) and a basket of tater tots ($1). Normally the same size order of tots is around 5 bucks so those were a bargain. The burger was also decent for $4, and they even threw in bbq sauce for free upon request, despite the happy hour menu stating that they made no substitutions. I was a little sad to see that the burger was slathered in mayo. It didn't state on the menu that they came with mayo... and I find mayo on a burger (or almost anything, really) totally disgusting. I tried to scrape off as much as I could, and when smothered in bbq, it wasn't half bad. I can't really vouch at all for the rooms. The sign says they run from 40-60 a night. For the location and the price, I assume it's probably a shithole to sleep in.. but who cares? read more

Favorite mcmennamins spot I've visited so far. We saw a few irish/folk groups preform here and, let me tell you, the dancing old folks really make this into magic. Like, the best aging hippies I've ever seen doing dance moves I've never seen. It was amazing. We also got some great beers and fairly well-made cocktails for a price that didn't break the bank. They did add simple syrup to my Irish Mule (after asking what it was) and that was fairly annoying. I suppose you could chalk it up to an honest mistake from a tender young bartender, but I know my whiskey and I know my mules, I kind of expect a place with an Irish theme to be able to pull a simple mix of rye, gingerale and lime off. But here you get to watch coffees go up in flames (they flambe their spanish coffee cocktail) and old folks dance like you wouldn't dream while sitting in a plush leather booth. It's pretty much the best. Minus the mule. read more

Whoa, only 35 reviews?! I can't believe this place doesn't have more honestly, because quite frankly, it ROCKS! Went here on a Tuesday night in March and saw Marv Ellis and Northwest Fresh (their show is awesome by the way) -- and what a turn out for a Tuesday night! I was soooo impressed. The crowd was pretty diverse (which I love, BTW, too much homogeneity in DC I guess) -- lots of dreds, yoked yoga chics, hippies, etc. and the energy was off the chain. We left at 12.30am and the crowd was still going strong. If I lived out here I would def be here every Tuesday - the music was great, the crowd was energetic, and just an all around great time; good conversation, good friends, fun people and a chill vibe -- what's not to appreciate about that? I also love how the interior is decorated -- it has that old "classic" feel to it with the brick and portraits adorning the walls yet it is entirely modern in experience -- people are selling art at the front and rocking out at the back near the stage, and smoking you-know-what in the parking lot adjacent to the patio....I'm just sayin'.... read more

This one was in an interesting part of town when we were finishing up our passports a few months ago. I liked the Venues layout. We had the Blue cheese tots. They were pretty delicious. The server was really nice and teased us about finding the clue. We are out of State passport holders. We will be back in October for the Tripster party in WA and will be staying at White Eagle one night. Can't wait to check out whatever band will there that night. read more

Had lunch here for the first time and I found the food to be delicious. I had the African peanut chicken soup and a side salad. The soup was tasty. The salad was a standard green salad but no complaints. My husband had a delicious French dip and my daughter had a kids chicken finger meal. Their French fries are hand cut and they have a great organic ketchup for dipping. The service was good and price was inexpensive. read more

We have a McMenamin's passports, so we originally went here just to get a stamp crossed off the passports. We were pleasantly surprised that they had live music! We ordered our favorite Portland Dip and enjoyed some Ruby's during the show. We will be back for sure! read more

We stayed the night came out to leave and someone broke out the back window in our car. I called the Kennedy school who oversees the White Eagle and basically was ignored. Up until this moment I was impressed with McMenamins but no more. Talked to manager at White Eagle who was concerned and empathetic. It sounds like they have been asking for cameras in the parking lot but Kennedy school has ignored them. read more

Delicious espresso!! I stopped in today because I was in the area and was pleasantly surprised to learn that this wonderful mcmenamins now has an espresso machine! The manager at the bar was wonderful and showed me the flavor options and made me exactly what I was craving which was tasty and well worth the money I saved by choosing white eagle. As I was previously headed to Starbucks it was even more wonderful to sit in a calmly lit environment with enjoyable music and wonderful staff. This was a perfect experience for a fall Portland afternoon. Both the bartender and server were welcoming, friendly, and very informative and knowledgable. I will be returning. read more

Yes, It's a McMenamins. Yes the food is typical. Yes the waitresses always seem to be understaffed, and have to (for some unknown reason) wait on the entire place by themselves. I think they try, so I'm not rating the food/service - they do what they can. I will say that since I was last here (over a year ago) they have significantly improved not only the seating in the live music area, but the sound system - and it is a HUGE improvement to the quality music they book there. read more

It's a time machine. When you get to your room, you can hear boozing, brawling, whoring factory workers hollering to you from the early days of the last century. If you are: 1. Limited to spending $50 2. A traveller in town on business (as opposed to a "business traveller").... This is the place. Much more charm than the BestComfortSleepQuality6. You'll have to deal with: 1. It's very much like a dorm. The rooms share two toilet closets and two shower closets, which are down the hall. Bring your shower shoes and some sweats. 2. The bar is loud. Light sleepers need not apply. Bring earplugs and/or noise-cancelling headphones. Free WiFi. Can't speak for the food or drink - I was very tired and went straight to bed. Limited parking - I got there late and had to park on the street, in a spot that went no-parking after 7 AM. As others have noted, it's a small inn - book early. read more

I wish I could give this place negative ratings. I arrived here at 6 in the afternoon was drinking eating and 3 hours later the demand of $8 for a cover charge was made. The reason given was it is 9 and everybody has to pay cover charge. After considering I spent a considerable amount of money in the three hour. This demand was ridiculous. I also inquired if they had a veteran's discount the answer was no. I am a disabled veteran and the fact that this demand for a cover charge after 3 hours was unreasonable that I've decided I will never step foot in another McMenamins again. McMenamins has demonstrated he cares nothing about its customers only their money. This goes to show how corporations treat people read more

Stayed at the hotel above for the evening so of course I had to check out the bar! Well I actually had to check in there lol. They got me a very early check in which was greatly appreciated and got some good advice about my next stop in town. After that I came back and had the grilled cheese and tots which hit the spot, had a couple cocktails and was told about the show they were having that evening which was free for guests of the hotel (score!). It was a good show, some nice tunes and all the staff that I spoke to (about 3 bartenders, two servers and a manager) were all extremely kind and helpful. Thanks for the good time! read more

I want to like this place more than I do. For the most part, service is terrible. Across the board, any time of day or night. I've always worked in customer service, I am surprised that the staff here can't be bothered to smile when someone smiles back, can't be bothered to greet someone or notice when someone new is at the bar or a table. The to-go orders are always wrong and food is way overpriced for what you get, bland at best. The ambiance and venue are really cool, love the fire pit outside and they have some great bands there, these things are the saving grace for an otherwise terrible establishment. read more

This was one of the first bars I was taken to when I moved up here, so it's got a nice little spot in my heart. The ambiance is comfortable when there's no band playing, and fun as hell when there is one. As a native of Tennessee, I can assure you that acceptable, entertaining bluegrass has been played here (and probably will continue to be played here). The food's expensive and not really anything special, and the service is friendly but usually a bit slow. Apparently understaffing is how McMenamin's likes to do business. Great for a McMinns, but I happened to be here on the hottest day of the year, and this place is NOT air conditioned. While I may have been sweating buckets, I didn't seem to mind much because my favorite artist, Bret Mosley, was playing that night. If Bret hadn't been on stage, I'd have never stayed. Seriously, I know PDX is all anti-air conditioning, but if you're a business, you might consider getting something for cooling your place down, especially since you're almost guaranteed to have a handful of these days a year. read more

I was staying last night and had dinner. I didn't leave a tip on the receipt for female server for a few reasons. (I won't even get into it). I noticed the next day that my bill was much larger than I remembered. I talked with the very nice day time manager and they found my receipt and guess what? The employee gave themselves a tip. They entered a tip when there clearly wasn't one. Basically, they stole my money! The manager sincerely apologized and refunded the whole bill. She is the reason I'm leaving any stars at all and was great. I think she's the boss. read more

I won free concert tickets to a show that was happening at White Eagle so we decided to check it out, and I will definitely be back! It is a great little venue for shows or you can go and just enjoy the full bar and food menu. We enjoyed some good beer from their extensive menu and some Cajun seasoned fries. Excellent service and good strong drinks. The Black Rabbit Red is a really great house wine and they had an oatmeal stout on the nitro tap which was superb. The staff was very friendly and when we came back after midnight, the band was still playing. The only downer was...the band was truly awful. Just awful. As is true of any McMenamins, this is unique. Not the greatest part of town from the locale; right next to the railroad tracks. But get inside and it's great. Always great brews on tap; I had the Cone Thug IPA. I also tried the TNT Chicken Strips (just chicken strips, nothin' fancy). And you can stay here. Apparently, this is the smallest of the McMenamins Hotels with only eleven rooms. read more

Went into the White Eagle on April 26. Had not been to this Mcminimins before and was looking forward to it. After we were seated the waitress arrived and was extremely rude right from the get-go. The first round of drinks arrived and were extremely watered-down and mostly ice. She had a very strange explanation about how ice made the drink? We had ordered just rum and Cokes. We ordered appetizers which were just ok. I have always gotten friendly service from Mcminimins in the past. However, I do not think I will frequent this one again based on my experience with her. read more
