I love how classy the clothes are at White House Black Market. I have some of my favorite pieces from WHBM. I have a classic floral black and purple skirt and a cute blouse that's very versatile. I tried on a bunch of tops there recently and they were made very well. The white blouse there that I tried on was elegant and extremely detailed. The deals at WHBM are pretty great too! I love this store and love the clothes, but my GOD, what is the problem with the sales associates? After my last visit in which I was attacked repeatedly while browsing by women reeking of desperation for a sale, I don't think I'll ever be back. They do that weird "Girl, I'm your best friend!" thing that just freaks me out. I was rushed into the dressing room, forced into a dress, shoes and cover-up. Then I had to stand there awkwardly while some crazy lady gushed about how many ways I could wear that damn, black, cropped sweater. 'With jeans? Can I really wear it with jeans?" Wow. Then, since I was on my way to a movie, I just wanted to get out of there and not carry around a dress all night, but the women were SERIOUSLY trying to browbeat me into buying the damn dress! They were practically clucking their tongues at me in disgust when I mentioned not wanting to carry it around. "Just pay now and you can pick it up tomorrow!" "But, I don't work downtown. I never come downtown." "Buy the dress. Just buy it. Someone else will get it before you... join us... join us..." I had to run out of there and was enraged for the next 20 minutes about how grossly I was treated. I'd like to say this is the first time I've felt like this, but I've noticed the same sort of pressuring tactics at the Old Orchard store as well. After this last time, I think my money is better spent elsewhere. If I want smarmy, underhanded service, I'll head to the used car lot on Western. No thank you. read more

I like this store a lot. It kind of bridges the gap between juniors and women's for those of us in our 20's and 30's. This is a great place to get a nice work outfit. The shirts are actually cut in proportion to a "real" woman's body, so that's always a plus. (I usually have problems finding button-up shirts that fit in the chest.) The downside -- some of the sales women are REALLY pushy at the Northbridge Mall location. For some reason, I get the same woman every time I go in there, and if you don't buy anything she gives you a nasty, kind of confused look. I recently went in there looking for something that was on sale -- not anything in particular, just browsing the sale rack. The sales woman (don't know her name) kept bringing me all this stuff to my dressing room and then proceeded to WAIT outside the dressing room wanting me to show her how it looked in front of the big, communal mirror! I mean, how do you tell her that you can't afford this $250 outfit she assembled for you without sounding like a total cheapskate? Needless to say, I do feel a little uncomfortable going in there now. Maybe I'll try the Water Tower location just to be safe :D read more

I was shopping tonight and decided to check out WHBM b/c of the $10 coupon they mailed me for my upcoming birthday. Normally I head straight for their sale rack (as small of a selection it can be) to check out what's in my price range. I found a couple of blouses to try on and also asked the sales woman if they carry jeans for short girls. I'm 5'2" and wear a size 8, needless to say it's not easy to find the right fit without them being hella long. She brought me a pair of jeans that fit fabulously but I winced at the $98 price tag. Call me cheap but that's a lot of money to spend on jeans. With my bday coming up I decided I'd treat myself and get them with the coupon (I rationalized that I've been searching for new jeans for months w/o results). I got to the register to be rung out and mentioned to their cashier Matthew that I'm treating myself and before I know it he pulls out a 30% off coupon and applies it to my purchase and simply says "Consider this a little more for your birthday." My $98 jeans turned into $55 jeans!!! Needless to say I'm calling his manager in the morning to give him a props for exceptional customer service. read more

I had multiple bad experiences at this store but my recent encounter with a manager led to this post. This manager was too engaged in a discussion with staff as I waited at the register for assistance. She raised her voice and slammed her fist on the counter in response to my questions about a return. As I said before, this is not my first bad customer service experience at WHBM. As a loyal WHBM customer, I am now checking out their store locations in every state I may go to! My advice about the sales help is to single out one that knows your style and then say, oh I am working with so and so today thanks...I for one do not at all mind the bevy of lovely sales help all your stores employs. I like help and I like to try something out of my comfort zone and voila! often it is wonderful. When I come in with my Mom, she is 86, the ladies are wonderful to her and yes, everyone treats you as a friend. It is so much better than being impersonal! I love it..your fit for my "00" is great and please continue to have XXS in your lovely, fun yet mature enough fashions. Was looking for a dress to wear to a wedding. I was greeted upon entry but then nothing else. I had a few outfits to try on and no one asked if I needed a room but other customers were approached. I circled over to the fitting room and still no one approached me, I had to ask a salesperson. She said they were full and that was it. I walked around some more and watched as customers left the fitting rooms but still no one looked for me if I needed a fitting room. Hence, I left without trying on the clothes but I did find an outfit at another store. read more

I love WHBM's clothes, but I will never visit the Water Tower Place location again for several reasons. The sales women are beyond pushy. I wanted no part of the shawl they were pushing. I clearly had no interest in the item, but two of them felt the need to tie it on me in 3 different ways. But what I am most furious about is what happened at the register. My credit card was incorrectly charged three times. I returned to the store immediately after checking my bank account and I proceeded to wait for over 25 minutes while the manager and sales associate fumbled over registers, customer service phone numbers, etc. I called the manager two days later. I was given a number for customer service and I was told the $220 dollars would be returned to my account within 3-5 days. One week later--Nothing. I called the manager again on October 31st. She told me a check would be put in the mail that day. One week later- nothing. I called her again on November 7th. (sorry very repetitive). She was not available and another woman told me she would call me back within 30 mins. I received a voicemail 6 hours later from the manager who told me she was leaving the store for the night in ten minutes. Wow! Someone did not want to talk to me. I called the customer service center again on November 7th and I was told by an associate that this location has had a lot of complaints. He proceeded to tell me I would receive the check in a few days. Still nothing. November 16th- Just got off the phone with customer service who told me the check would take 4-6 weeks. 4-6 weeks to return over $200 dollars? Wow! I will never return! read more

Their 'Little Black Book' is one that I am proud to have my name in! WHBM is one of my favorite stores. Considering that a majority of my daily apparel ranges from black to white and similar hues in between, this store keeps me covered...literally. Whether you are interested in adorning your body in a sexy little black dress, strappy heels or the season's latest office attire, you will surely find what you need. Also, the staff is stellar...if they don't have what you need, the database at their fingertips will search every store to locate your size & ship it to the location of your liking. Great store! I recently found a very reasonably priced dress for an upcoming wedding that I love. They carry some really cute accessories, jewelry, shoes and bags/clutches for fancier occasions. Some of the apparel is not my style, but there's a lot to choose from. Dresses, tops, skirts, shorts, pants, etc... great store, up with the trends of the season and most items are really reasonable. a cinderella tale- scene: friday, 5:20 pm. women's bathroom at my office. me- redfaced, staring in the mirror, while 2 of my coworkers have negotiated with the broken zipper on the back of my exquisite dress, but have conceded defeat. my awards ceremony starts in 10 minutes. 5:25pm. i throw caution to the wind and RUN to WHBM with a gait that only a water buffalo could envy, where i had bought the dress 4 years ago. on arrival i announce (yell) that i need help. to this, i expected the sales associate to start throwing dresses at me to try on, as it appeared my only 5-minute alternative. instead, they ushered me to the dressing room, assured me that everything would be fine, and waited for me to put the dress back on...upon which they worked with dedicated precision and managed to coax the unfortunate little zipper into sliding all the way to the top. i then took a brief minute to look appropriate for a ceremony (aka try to calm the 'crazy' out of my hair and face), and walk out the store to calls of 'good luck, you look great!'. 5:32pm. i stroll into the ceremony like my last half hour had been normal, hardly believing i was still in my own beautiful dress, and incredibly grateful to the whole team at WHBM. read more

I love the clothes here; they are well-made and you can find a decent sale every once in a while (otherwise they are a bit pricey; around that of the Loft). I have to echo what others have said about the sales associates: PUSHY! I don't mind the 'making friends with clients' thing... having worked in sales, I totally get it. That being said, if sales people are trying to make friends with clients, don't you think they would figure out what the client's tastes are? Every time I go shopping ANYWHERE I choose my own clothes. I know fashion. I know what I like. I know what I can afford. I find it very insulting when I want to try on a floral tank and the sales person puts an evening gown, cropped pleather jacket and dress pants two sizes too big in my dressing room, all quadrupling my budget. It gets way confusing when someone is shown to a dressing room and they don't recognize the clothes in it. Oh, and the last time I went there, I believe some of the items I chose were missing while not recognizing most of the items in the dressing room... I said to myself, "is this a joke?" Lesson learned: be the only one in control of your shopping experience! Only then shall I walk out a happy girl! read more

I really like this store for dresses and evening wear. The styles range from cute to sheik and the accessories and shoes are great! Definitely a must for weddings or special occasions where you would need a nice dress or skirt. The prices aren't bad, but it is located in water tower so don't expect miracles. They always have a section of discounted items that are more reasonable if you need to be thrifty. I have been to other WHBM but never get the over the top service like I do at this location. They bring out tons of outfits, stuff that I would have never thought to try on. While I love the clothes, the customer service for on line orders is a joke. I ordered two pairs of leggings that did not arrive due to an incomplete address- which one woman told me should not have been the case due to them having my full address from previous orders. I have now called 4 times. I have been told it's my issue to take up with the post office. I had a supervisor tell me I should wait ten days becuase that's what the post office tells WHBM- that no matter when the tracking says the package arrived- you have to wait an additional ten days. Now the post office says they sent it back to WHBM and I am still waiting for them to re-send the package. The women are rude and actually make smart a** comments. I will never order from them again- this is why I always stick with Nordstrom. read more

So disappointed with White House Black Market. I received a Christmas gift from one of the shops in Georgia. I wasn't really fond of it but I felt very uncomfortable asking my dad for the receipt because I didn't want to hurt his feelings. I took the items to the White House Black Market near my home and had a very disappointing experience. The saleslady tried to look my dad's name up in their computer....Not much of a surprise that my dad does not have a White House Black Market Account. Since the items were still sold in the shop I was sure I could get in-store credit. But the sales lady was quick to tell me there was nothing she could do and I should donate the gifts to charity or regift. Horrible policy! read more

I recently shopped at the WHBM Outlet store while in WI, and was looking to see if there was a full store located closer to me. The Water Tower store is very conveniently located, but the past reviews intrigued me. I steeled myself when entering the doorway this past Friday, and I'll tell you that nothing has changed! I had barely taken down one pair of pants and put over my arm, when I was offered to have a room started. Here we go, I thought. So I sped through the store to find the one dress I was hoping to try on. Again - the second I pulled it off the rack I was approached by someone else. When I pulled a third item to hold it up, I barely had it off the rod when the 1st helper was back. I actually yelled at her, "I JUST pulled this down! Give me a chance to LOOK at it, at least!" I made a point of speeding through the store in 1 minute, tops, and then went in search of my room. I was led to a room FULL of clothes. I took a step back and said this isn't my room, and my name wasn't on the board. At this point, I couldn't even remember the second item I'd handed over - there were so many clothes! I was shown "here are your pants (behind 2 other items), and we completed the outfit for you." There is no way on earth that they had the time to do that and fill the room with the other things. (They pulled the dress out from amongst a dozen other items.) I tried on my two things with my eye on the curtain the whole time - based on past reviews I fulled expected someone to be peeking in. They didn't, but I was asked at least twice if I needed any help with sizing. I grabbed the one item I was purchasing, and got out of there! Yes, the clothes are fun, comfortable and can be used for either work or play. But save yourself the aggravation and buy online or go to the outlet location in Pleasant Prairie - the ladies there are helpful, but not intrusive. Do NOT purchase a wedding dress from this place! They used to have a separate wedding store but now I can see why that didn't last!! I ordered what looked to be a cute dress online, but it was much cheaper looking in person than it looked online. Strike one. When I tried it on, the cheap hanging strap got stuck in the cheap zipper and I couldn't get it on or off. Strike two. Needless to say, I sent the dress back and they refused to refund me!! I wanted to go to this store on Michigan Ave because my co-worker had a great top from here. The clothing was cute, and priced well for the quality. However, the sales women there were SO PUSHY!!! I would have been inclined to give four or maybe 5 stars, otherwise. When they took me back to the changing room they got my name and shoe size, then brought me shoes even though I didn't ask for them or want to try any. When I brought my item to checkout, the cashier said, "You should look at some of our sale jewelry. Take our customers' word for it - it's great!" Um, I didn't hear any customers talking about sale jewelry... Then when I said I wasn't interested, one of the other sales girls brought a necklace saying, "This is our last one..." Did she not just hear me say I didn't want to look at sale jewelry? I don't care if it's the last one. No means no! Geez! I like the shirt I got, but I won't be going back any time soon. read more

NO sillies its NOT ALL white and black, there are some other neutrals in there (no you aren't going to find vibrant colors in there though) Such cute stuff in here! I was pleasantly surprised to walk into Water Tower and see this had opened up - some of it seems pretty overpriced to me, its not like expensive materials are used, but they have a huge sale rack, and the dresses are so cute! Its also worth the price to have great go -to pieces like these in your closet for nights out; cute without being trampy. My sister had been hunting for a good pair of black dress pants forever and wound up finding some here. Goes to show this store appeals to a wide range of women - I've seen girls who look to be even younger than college age, to those who look old enough to be my mom, and I never thought anybody looked out of place here. read more

I have shopped at WHBM for years, and it seems now things have changed. It is a completely different environment than I once enjoyed shopping in. Before the holidays, I was shopping for two different dresses to wear to two separate events that I had for work. I started my search at the Water Tower store because this location seems it has always been much less high pressure than the one in the Nordstrom mall. To my dismay, I was approached immediately with questions by a "robot" salesgirl. I was followed around the store like a cat in heat. I was so uncomfortable that I wanted to leave, but I really needed the dresses for my events. I wanted to look by myself, but the robot would not take "no" for an answer (as if she was programmed). Finally, because I was desperate to get these outfits, I decided to allow the robot to give me a few suggestions. Once in the fitting room, I was pressured by her to keep coming out of the room so she could "evaluate my look" and "shower me with artificial praise." I tried on three dresses that all did not fit me the right way, and then I went on to my final option. It was really cute but obviously a size too small. I was standing in front of the mirror explaining how uncomfortable the dress was.. I could barely breathe. Then, a man that worked there approached me and told me that it looked "fabulous." I told him I was physically uncomfortable and then asked is they could see if another store had my size (because they did not). He did not seem pleased... isn't this a common practice in retail? I am just trying to buy your dress in a size that fits me! I changed back into my clothes and when I came out of the dressing room the sales robot told me that the store on Oak street had my size. She told me that I should purchase this dress here so that I could go SERIOUSLY ONE BLOCK over to EXCHANGE it at the Oak street store "hassle" free for the right size. I asked her why I couldn't just go buy it there, rather than have to buy and then exchange. She informed me that her store manager "Matt" said "that's the way that we do it." I figured because of my short time frame that I should just go along with it. So I then went to the Oak St. store. Again, I was IMMEDIATELY hounded the second I walked in... it made me want to scream! I proceeded to the cash register, so fed up with their black and white nonsense, and asked for a manager because I couldn't deal with this stage show any longer. The manager "Katie" came over and asked how she could help me. At first, I thought her "valley girl" act was just that. After a few minutes of trying to deal with her, I realized it wasn't. She actually was a programmed science project. UNREAL!! It was like talking to an automated system when you call your credit card company. I explained to her the situation and she looked at me as if I wasn't speaking English. She instantly developed an attitude and asked very rudely what size I wanted. After I told her, she looked for the size for about 3 seconds and told me she didn't have it. I was confused, so I walked over to the dress section myself and found it immediately. Of course she did the exchange for me but it was obvious she was irritated. As a long time customer at WHBM, I am extremely let down and upset with the way I was treated by the managers of these two stores. Because of this, it has turned off to the store completely.... ... I went to the WHBM at the Water Tower. I was visiting from Michigan for my Bachelorette party and wanted to hit up some Chicago stores...this place was awesome! I have never had a shopping experiance like this before! I initially picked out one dress and when I went to try it on the sales associate asked me my size...I'm thinking hmm that's a little weird, why do you need that? But I told her and she said she would pull some more things for me in addition to the items she already put in my dressing room (I guess she could guess my size from looking at me)! Anyway, she was awesome and paired together entire outfits and really listened to what kind of style I liked. I didn't feel pushed or pressured, I just thought it was so much fun! Love WHBM but had a bad experience. When I was being rung up by the manager my tote bag was right on the counter next to the items i was paying for. As I did not want to pay the city of chicago tax for a bag. She rung them up shame on me for not looking at the detail at the bottom and she automatically charged me .07. When she turned around and handed me a WHBM bag with my goos I figured she was giving to me free since she NEVER asked if I wanted to be charged .07. forget the fact a big canvas bag was sitting right on the counter in front of her. When i asked if the bag was free she said no it was .07. Asked why she would have just charged me when one was sitting right on the counter and she said , well i just figured. Figured what? Than made a big deal that I would be upset and said she would find .07. Not the point, i spent several hundred dollars 07 is not going to kill me. She should have asked! I am posting this complaint of racial discrimination that took place at your chicago,il Water Tower location. This happened Saturday Nov 19th at 1:11pm by the store manager Sarah Eddy (at least that was the name given). She came over and asked to help w/earrings I didn't even pick up & then stated she'd just stay right there while I pick something out. After a brief moment she went to her trainee standing behind me & said(in what she believed to be a whisper "ok we're calling security because she put those earrings in her pocket". I saw her going to call security & so I went over to the counter, emptied my pockets to prove I DIDN'T have anything, while she still called security. You can expect a call to your corporate office, consumer affairs, the owners of water tower & a formal complaint to BBB. This is despicable service & the fact that a manager was training her employees this way truly makes me question your company's policy & standards.Needless to say that was my first & last time EVER stepping inside one of your stores. i was so annoyed at the charlottesville whbm store. the sales associate kept coming into the fitting room when i was halfway clothed. in no way shape or form should you just walk into a fitting room where i"m changing! she also brought shoes and clothes that i didn't want and were not even close to my style. i didn't ask her to bring me any shoes or other clothes i picked out what i wanted to try on and i was in a hurry. i will definitely not be going back to the annoying whbm store. let people shop and try on their clothes. it's ok to ask from outside if i need anything but don't just bust right in and bring me items that i didn't ask for. i wanted to throw the shoes at her head. stop walking in when i"m changing. it's so incredibly rude and invasive to my personal space. what is wrong with people? read more
