There was plenty more options than just your standard pancake, bacon, and eggs. Our kids loved the pigs in a blanket which was actually quite big and perfect for our two kids to split. From the moment we walked in, the vibe felt a little off. There were some stares and unfriendly looks that immediately made us feel uncomfortable. The woman who greeted and seated us, however, was very sweet, and our server was also friendly--at least initially. We were seated, our drinks came out promptly, and our order was taken without issue. Then we waited. And waited. And waited. At this point, we had been waiting approximately 30-35 minutes for our food. What made the situation even more frustrating was that we noticed a party of four who arrived at least 15-20 minutes after us had already been served their food. My sister understandably asked our server about our order. She said she would check on it, but she never came back to give us an update. About five minutes later, she was finally walking toward our table with our food. The problem? By then, we had been there for roughly 45 minutes, and we had a 1:00 p.m. tour appointment that we were already going to be late for. As she approached our table, we had already stood up to leave. My sister explained that we unfortunately had to go, and the server's response was: "Oh, okay. I'll just cancel your orders." That was it. No apology. No explanation. No acknowledgment that we had been waiting for nearly 45 minutes. Nothing. As someone who has worked in customer service for most of my life, I understand that things happen. Orders get delayed. Tickets can get lost. Kitchens get busy. But the natural response in a situation like this should be something as simple as, "I'm so sorry for the delay. Let me find out what's happening." Instead, we received no apology or sense of concern whatsoever. I later called the restaurant and asked to speak with the manager. To her credit, she was very apologetic and tried to explain that perhaps our server was "having an off day." She also mentioned that sometimes tickets don't go through the system in the order they're received. I understand that mistakes happen, but that explanation didn't really address what happened. We were seated roughly 20 minutes before the other party, yet they received their meals well before us. More importantly, it was the complete lack of acknowledgment or apology from our server that made the experience so upsetting. And I have to say something else because it is difficult to ignore. We are Asian. The other party was white. I cannot say with certainty that race was the reason our experience unfolded the way it did. But when you combine the uncomfortable looks and overall atmosphere we experienced when we walked in, followed by being seated significantly earlier but served much later, and then the complete lack of concern when we finally had to leave, it left us feeling very uncomfortable and questioning whether we were treated differently because of our race. That is a terrible feeling to leave a restaurant with. Hood River is a beautiful town, and we had otherwise been enjoying our visit. It's unfortunate that this experience became such a memorable part of our trip. Racism may not always be obvious or openly expressed, but experiences like this are a painful reminder that discrimination can still exist in places where you least expect it. I sincerely hope this was simply a series of unfortunate circumstances and not what it appeared to be. But regardless of the reason, the way our family was treated--and especially the lack of basic customer service when we raised the issue--was disappointing.
