Whitesells Pharmacy is how a pharmacy/drug store used to be and should be. They are incredibly nice, professional and knowledgeable about their business. I needed to get medication for my son -which had to be compounded (instead of pill form - it needed to be in a liquid) and after going around to a number of local pharmacies in the area, CVS, Giant, Safeway even Wegman's no one was able to help. I was told about Whitesells by a friend where I worked with Rebecca and Danielle. These two have been... in a word - Fantastic! Rebecca who does the compounding, is extremely knowledgable about the process, provided me with and excellent education and has been a joy to work with. Danielle is also tremendously nice and helpful which makes the entire experience less stressful. They handle the insurance issues, call you back when they say they are which is important, at least to me. They also have a great medical supply area and just as helpful and professional. Kathy Curran was so thorough helping me navigate through insurance issues and went the extra mile to help. Bottom-Line - I don't even live in the Frederick Area, however, I drive up there in rush-hour 270 traffic to use there services. Could I go somewhere else? Sure, but when you are dealing with prescriptions and medications and other sensitive things, trust and knowledge is important (which they have demonstrated) and at the end of the day just because of something may be more convenient, doesn't make it better. read more

They should get zero stars. My husband has been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. We usually use the cvs near our house. But the medicine that my husband was put on by his oncologist they don't carry. So it was sent here. Upon calling to find out when it would be ready for pick up, the lady I spoke to was very rude and on an ego trip. Giving us the Spanish inquisition. It's bad enough to have cancer!! We didn't need to be given a hard time. 1st experience with this pharmacy, and it will definitely be the last. We were told that if my husband transferred all his meds to them.....then they would think about filling the one he so desperately needs. I am so blown away and angry. I understand that they have procedures and protocols they have to follow....how, about a little comparison and understanding!! I don't even know if spending the time to write this review matters. The owner of Whitesell's should change the name to Lies Unlimited. Darce is a vengeful, cantankerous individual who is causing her own failure. I was a customer for Whitesell's for about 2 1/2 years. Communication with this pharmacy has been spotty, and sometimes, for days in a row, with speaking or texting with a customer. I like the idea of supporting a "family owned business". However, the poor communication there is nerve racking and causes me a lot of anxiety. Recently, a doctor transmitted a prescription to her for me. It was time sensitive, as are most medications, and I called Whitesell's to ask when I might be receiving my medications. There was no answer, so I left a message. That was on a Wednesday. Thursday came and there was a text message (I thought they were no longer using text messaging) telling me that they couldn't fill it because it was not filed yet. I had no idea what filed meant. I sent a return text asking for clarification. No answer. No phone call on Thursday, either. By Friday, I was quite concerned, and by Friday evening, the was no phone call back from them. I had left three messages in total, and none were returned. I decided that I had to actually go into the pharmacy the next day to see if it had been filled. It had been filled. I am accustomed, like most people, to having my calls returned, especially concerning medicine, within a reasonable frame of time, meaning within two or three hours, if not sooner. I was experiencing a good bit of anxiety just left waiting with no communication. Also, most pharmacies do send a text or a call when a medicine is ready to be picked up. I think that it is entirely reasonable to be upset about the lack of communication, and certainly reasonable to want to make a verbal complaint about it. I had thought about making a direct complaint to Yelp here, but decided that I would, instead, just tell the person in charge what their neglect put me through. I went to the store on Saturday morning (not knowing whether or not my medications were filled) to see if I could purchase my medications. They were filled and ready. I told the person at the register that I am unhappy about not having my calls returned, or being told, somehow, that my medications were filled. My voice, due to my chronic illness, is not loud at all. I have to really work to project my voice. I saw the pharmacists and started to tell him (he was behind the pharmacy counter) that I had a complaint about the lack of communication. He stood back so that I had to raise my voice for him to hear me. I have chronic sore throats and do not like to raise my voice at all, so I avoid that. He began shaking his head back and forth, and using his arms to motion for me to go away. I told him that it isn't right for a pharmacy to be entirely absent when a customer needs their medications. He raised his voice and started saying, over and over, "that did not happen!" "No, that didn't happen at all!" while vigorously shaking his head. He made it clear that he didn't think that anything happened at all for me to be upset about, and that he was not going to listen to me. I did say to him that I thought I would just say something and leave it at that, instead of writing a complaint online, and that, if my complaint would not be taken, that I would do that (make an online complaint) instead. I also said to the pharmacist that I wanted to order a certain medication from another manufacturer because the one she uses dispenses huge pills that can be bought in a smaller size from another maker. I went straight to the cashier when I arrived and was in the store for about 3 minutes. IF THAT WASN'T ENOUGH, Darce called my new doctor slandered me and told lies! I am not sure the extent of those lies, however, it is completely unhinged to do that. Today, I had a bad experience at this doctor's office due to Darce's lies and need for conflict. I was informed that I "made a scene" at this pharmacy. That is not true at all. I was the only customer there. Did you promise them business, Darce? I am now going to have to waste my time starting an investigation into this incident, because it is very serious to call someone's doctor to tell them anything, much less lie and defame that person. I very much like the doctor who's office that she called and slandered me to the manager there, and I certainly do not want any trouble for him. Starting a conspiracy against a customer whom you did, in fact, grossly neglect, is outrageous. I had every right to be concerned, and I had every right to express my dissatisfaction. I certainly couldn't call to complain. Darce, I didn't want to do this in public, but you give me no choice. I am quite concerned that she has slandered me to others, as she appears to lack judgement and has a bad temper. read more

This Pharmacy is an absolute joke. You can let them know on your very first visit that you were going to be coming to them from now on every month because they are cheaper than your old pharmacy. However, they refuse to keep medication on inventory even when you alert them three days prior and remind them again the next day that you will be coming out of four months of coming here, I have never once got mine and my fiancé's meds both all filled at once. It's required return trips and for me that is a big inconvenience. ESPECIALLY when a staff member tells you not a problem we'll have them overnighted for you, but one pharmacist just one has to be a complete PIA.. I'll give it to them they have good prices but it's not worth the hassle of having to make two trips for me, now if I was a local I guarantee I wouldn't have any problem because I've seen the same guy there picking up the same medication two out of my four trips maybe three and he certainly gets all of his filled. Rather than just man and tell you we would don't want you coming from out of state they just screw you around every month until you quit coming.. I told them the very first day I was gonna make them my new Pharmacy and I would be there precisely for Fridays from that day and for Fridays from that day from here on out and they still could not have both of our medication on hand. So to the pharmacist that keeps telling me, I can't order it ahead of time, tell your staff to stop telling that it's no problem they can have it overnighted just to let you know a couple days before I come. Because I know the staff that told me that they're telling the truth you're telling lies. I'd rather drive back to West Baltimore than deal with this big feeling pharmacist who passes judgment in a passive, aggressive, snobby tone. read more

Received medically necessary baby formula direct shipped from here in 2016, was told it was 100% covered by insurance. Now all of a sudden it's a collection on my credit report saying we owe $900 7 years later. I have filed a dispute and made sure to attach the email CONFIRMING it was indeed 100% COVERED that I made sure to hold onto and now I am glad I did. Would NOT recommend you use them for ANYTHING unless you want a ding on your credit report 7 years later!!! read more

Worst pharmacy experience of my life by far. I am a 60-year old male with advanced heart failure, following multiple heart attacks and a quadruple bypass caused by radiation damage from lymphoma treatments. My prescription for Entresto, a critical drug used to treat heart failure, needed to be renewed, so my Frederick Maryland cardiology team renewed it at Whitesell Pharmacy, located just around the corner from my home on West 3rd St. When I went to pick up the Entresto last week, the Whitesell staff informed me that my prior authorization for insurance coverage of my Entresto had expired, and they refused to fill the prescription. I tried to show them the letter from my insurance company, notifying me that my prescription just needed to be renewed (as had already been done) and that the letter said nothing at all about expiration of my prior authorization. The staff member brushed off my letter, would not look at it, and insisted that she had nothing to say to me until I went back to my cardiologist and had them contact my insurance company for prior authorization. When I explained that I had just spoken by phone to my cardiologists about the prescription, and had been told it was ready to be picked up at Whitesell, she again waved me off and said I had to leave. When I asked if she could call my cardiology practice here in Frederick to resolve the problem, she impatiently told me that "we don't talk to the doctors of any patient". At this point, an older male manager or owner sitting behind the tall counter (out of my view) starting barking at me to just shut up and go talk to my doctor and insurance company. The staff member also mentioned that they had been notified of the prior authorization problem with my Entresto 3 weeks ago, but it should be noted here that they made no attempt whatsoever to contact me during this period and alert me to the problem (despite having ALL my contact info on file due to my recent previous purchase of the drug Repatha at Whitesell a few month ago). I exited the Whitesell Pharmacy storefront, and immediately called my cardiology clinical team. They were surprised by this development, and instantly started processing an appeal to my insurance company to re-instate my prior authorization for Entresto. The next day, one of the clinical team called Whitesell to clarify the problem, and was similarly brushed off and told to just go sort out the situation with the insurance company first. Upon hearing this discouraging news, I called my insurance company to ask why my Entresto authorization had been cancelled, and what did they expect me to do once my painful heart failure symptoms kicked in with no medication? The insurance company checked all their records, and promptly informed me that my Entresto authorization was still perfectly valid, it had not been revoked as claimed by Whitesell, and in fact it is 100% valid until December 2039. So, I am good for Entresto for another 17 years, despite what the Whitesell staff are falsely claiming. I immediately called my clinical cardiology team, and we quickly agreed that there was no point trying to call Whitesell and reason with their stubborn staff and/or management. Instead, we re-routed the new Entresto prescription to the CVS pharmacy on 7th St. in Frederick (across from Frederick Memorial Hospital). 5 minutes later CVS texted me to say the order was received, after another 5 minutes CVS texted to say "pending insurance approval", after 20 minutes CVS texted that the order was approved and being processed, and 30 minutes later, my Entresto order was ready to be picked up. Hooray ! - no severe chest pains thanks to CVS ! A job very well done by a competent pharmacy across town. Too bad my immediate neighborhood doesn't have a CVS, and is instead stuck with Whitesell Pharmacy. CVS = 4 very helpful communications in 1 hour....in comparison to....Whitesell = absolute silence for 3 weeks, while refusing to fill my critical cardiac prescription or even talk to me about the problem. I have spent much of my scientific career teaching graduate, medical, and pharmacy students, so I have very closely held beliefs regarding ethical behavior in these fields. Whitesell Pharmacy falls far short of even barely minimal standards, based on my recent experience with them. Withholding critical medication on false pretenses from a heart failure patient is clearly not consistent with the Hippocratic Oath (Primum non nocere- "Do no harm"). I was referred to Whitesells from my insurance company, as they are one of the breast pump providers. I spoke with Kathy and she was super friendly and helpful! She immediately sent me an easy to use form to fill out and email back to her. They take care of coordinating with the insurance company and this is KEY. No hassle or worries for me. I emailed my form back close to 5pm Tuesday and low and behold I have a brand new breast pump next day morning at my front door! Talk about fast, easy service!! Rented a scooter from this business for a month and found I would need one for at least three months. They offer to sell the scooter and discount what you already have paid, however, they claim to have paid $340.00 for the scooter new. They acknowledged that Amazon sells the same scooter for $180.00 but they pay $340.00 for for an unknown reason. Skip this business and just get it from Amazon, in the end you could probably sell it to these yahoos for 180.00 used and they would be happy for it. read more

I was visiting from out of town and ran out of a medication as I was here visiting for the holiday and my stay had to be extended. I do not recommend this pharmacy for veterinary medication needs. Because it's 3 blocks from my house, and because the other compounding pharmacy is in Kensington MD I hoped for better access. Not so much. The vet called the script in on Monday, I called Monday to be told it wasn't there. Recalled vet, who said she left a voicemail. I've left 3 voicemails since. This is Thursday and I've heard nothing. Tomorrow I'm driving to Kensington. read more

I can't say enough good things about Whitesell's. It's a community institution for good reason. I've never had to wait more than 20 minutes to have a prescription filled, and the pharmacists and waitstaff are knowledgeable and friendly. When I had questions about a new medication my doctor prescribed, the pharmacist helped me understand its purpose and side effects. They were able to help when a complicated situation arose regarding my health insurance. Whitesell's also has a solid selection of over-the-counter products, shampoos, soaps, First Aid supplies, and more. I took a friend who is dying with a terminal illness to Whitesell's to fill a prescription for morphine. We went to the pharmacy on a recommendation from his social worker, (She referred him to Whitesell's because she knows hospice gets it from them) This drug is much needed for his pain. The pharmacist, "Darcy" told my friend she could not fill the prescription because it was written by a doctor from Germantown, MD not Frederick, MD and he did not have a relationship with the pharmacy. She told him the script needed to be written by a Frederick, MD doctor. There is no law stating that a customer must have a script written by a doc in the same town the pharmacy located in. My friend came out very upset. I took him to lunch, called a few pain management facilities in Frederick, they do not accept his insurance. We had tried countless CVS', Rite Aid's, Giant and Walmart pharmacies. They do not have this medicine in stock. I called his ins. company. They told me he should be able to fill his prescription anywhere in this USA and unfortunately the don't have any pain management facilities in Frederick for him see and possibly get a new script. I was befuddled to say the least. I offered to go speak with the pharmacist, "Darcy" and explain the situation. She still refused and started talking about the DEA auditing her and having to explain why she was filling a prescription from a doctor in Germantown. This was the most ludicrous statement I have ever heard. She refused to help my friend who is in serious need of his medication. She refused to fill the prescription. She wouldn't even let him establish a relationship with Whitesell's. After leaving there we had to go to Frederick Memorial so they could administer meds to him. I would never recommend this pharmacy to someone with an acute terminal illness. Cold, cold pharmacist. read more

3 one star reviews in two weeks. Today I was in the area so I had my wife medicine fill there. Her insurance doesn't cover medicine. So before it was filled I asked how much it would be. I was told they couldn't tell me until they run it. So when it was ready 40 minutes later after they told me 15-20. It was 3 times the normal cost. When I asked why I was told by the owner( Mike) . I should have gone there! Really I will in the future.Hope you will as well. read more

Such an amazing place to all your prescription needs. I would suggest it to any and everybody. The big pharmacy chains such as CVS, Walgreens, and even Walmart, never kept my meds in stock. I would have to wait for days to get them. Here these guys at amazing. After a couple of trips in. You can bet the next time you come in you will be in business. And very likely they will already know you by name. It's a pharmacy that really, truly, and fully care about you. They work great with insurance company's. I've been using these guys for 6 months and I'm disgusted with my self for not coming here sooner. I would highly suggest that everybody who is tired of the struggles of big box pharmacy's. Come here and allow them to take care of you. You will be more than satisfied. Not to mention I can't remember the last time I was able to meet any one as friendly as the staff here. I moved to Frederick from the south. Hospitality is what we do. When I walk in here it feels like home to me. I've even seen hugs handed out. I happened to be in the pharmacy through a recommendation from a friend. Good old fashioned drugstore, quite busy when I entered. They must be doing something right! So I thought. I was a bit disturbed by some of the banter of one of the staff members. Seems that this individual is having issues about management and was not at all afraid of letting certain individuals at the counter know how she truly felt. In my honest opinion, this conversation is something you normally keep to yourself and not within earshot of your customers to hear. Very unprofessional and very disrespectful. This is something I expect to hear while at a chain store, because the majority of the staff are young and really "don't care" of who is watching or listening. To walk into an independent pharmacy and hear, "management doesn't know what they are doing" is very rude and demoralizing. Let me give you a piece of advise, if working for any establishment is such a hardship, find another profession that is less stressful. People go into a pharmacy because they are sick, having their own issues and don't want to hear personal issues of the staff. I could have gone to any other pharmacy within a 5 mile radius of this location. Coming to this location was clearly a mistake on my part. But, like with any company, there is always room for improvement. read more

What a disaster. I tried to order compression stockings with a rx having them sent through the mail. I sent a copy of the rx , my email and a copy of my driver's license. I inquired later about the status and was told I needed to send contact information. Then I was told I needed to fill out an information sheet which I did and returned by mail. One month later when inquiring about the status they tell me they need the information sheet, the shade of the stockings, and $9.99. Trying to figure out what I did to piss them off that has made them so unhelpful, just sitting on my rx. read more

My 92 year-old mother needed a wheelchair. First I tried Roberts Home Medical and spent nearly three weeks going back and forth with them on how to proceed. I finally gave up and tried Frederick Medical Supplies, who never returned my phone call. Then I called Whitesell's Pharmacy and spoke with Cathy Conners. I immediately realized I should have called them first. She quickly sent me an email of a simple form that I printed, completed, and faxed back to them late on a Thursday afternoon. By the following Monday afternoon, the wheelchair was delivered by a very nice gentleman named Kyle, who took the time to patiently explain to us how the wheelchair operated. Please, don't waste your time with these other fly-by-night, incompetent operations. If you or a loved one need home medical equipment, go to Whitesell's and save yourself a lot of aggravation. To begin this review, I'll go back to the beginning. I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease at the age of 26 on Thanksgiving day. You can only imagine how many times I have had to go to the hospital (as of 3/5/16 96 admissions and 426 days and nights at John Hopkins and Frederick Memorial). That is more than enough and for another review. Having to see my doctors and my pain management doctor, I have only used Whitesells. I don't know where to begin in praising Whitesells. Everybody that is employed at Whitesells from Mike the now Pharmacy manager all the way down to the college age young people who give you your medicine are extremely polite and patient with you. I have had to go into Whitesells plenty of times since 2007 and I am happy to report that I have never had a bad experience. If you have any questions or concerns, the staff will answer them. The pharmacists know everything about medicines. If you need a pharmacy, stay away from the big chains, Safeway, CVS and go to Whitesells. You will not be disappointed. read more
