I LOVE the burgers here. I don't even really like hamburgers but the Juicy Lucy is succulent and the perfect size (slightly petite). I enjoyed the chicken sandwich and the PB burger as well. The sweet potato fries are very good. I would not recommend the kale dishes- I am more of a purist with my kale. I don't like it deep fried or drenched in butter. The decor is very cozy- exposed brick makes Whitmans part of the NYDS, surely. Seating is limited, but how can a kitchen staff accommodate 40 tables and do a good job?? read more

With a small bistro/cafe store front it might be easy to walk pass Whitman's without much of a second thought, but a second glance you'll notice the sign that informs you of additional dining space downstairs. However, I would not recommend this place for a large group. It's pretty small and the downstairs dining area is very dark. It's a great place for a casual date or an intimate gathering with a couple of friends. Now the food - the Juicy Lucy, as many of other yelpers mentioned, is out of this world good. The fried pickles were sliced thin and fried crisp. My bf had the Revis and it was pretty good but the Lucy was a whole other level of good and I wasn't even that hungry. The burgers are honestly incredible. Might be the best burger I've ever had and at the very least top three. Came here just for the Juicy Lucy and she did not disappoint. Amazing tender beef, crunchy pickles, and pimento cheese bursting out with every bite. Sublime. My husband had the Hound and the crispy potato sticks with gruyere were great touches. Burger heaven. I docked a star because the service was subpar - forgot that we were waiting for a table and then never delivered the blue cheese fries we ordered (they deducted from the bill of course). Maybe this was on off night for the kitchen at Whitman's but impress us, they did not. Everything started out fine. We got a table downstairs and the waitress was quick and friendly. We ordered a PB&B and a Mangold burger- and we ordered them medium rare. But when the burgers arrived they were definitely more like medium well (just the faintest touch of pink left in that meat). And in all our burger travels in NYC we have gotten used to places getting this essential right. It's the restaurant equivalent of fumbling the ball just short of a touchdown. Even then the burgers were solid. The one with peanut butter and bacon was interesting but maybe the PB overpowers everything else? The Mangold was good, nice beefy taste, and a good amount of cheese. Good yes, but they weren't standouts. And we were distracted by a fries situation. When our fries came they were discernibly cold. Like they had been left in front of an air conditioning vent for a while. They tasted good but fries really should hit the table - if not hot - then at least on the upper side of warm. So we asked for them to be replaced - a thing I hate doing. I have that passive aggressive Canadian thing where I would rather stew than try to fix a problem. However I am trying to be a better person and calmly try to resolve things because most restaurants in the USA actually want to be given the chance to a make it work for their customers. And the waitress was really good about it and got us another order of fries right away. But those burgers aren't that big and we were pretty much done with them by the time fries 2 arrived. And they were hot but --- they were light in color and a little underdone (like they had been rushed through the process). I might be reading too much into but it was kind of like a message from the kitchen and not a nice one. But there is no way I am going to send fries back a second time. We ate them - but with no joy. The place wasn't even super busy. A lot of the tables around us got their orders at the same time - had they been piling up? Considering the price it all should have been better. So can we all agree the http://restaurant.com "gift certificates" are just basically glorified coupons? Yes, we can, I think. After receiving a few as presents, I spent the better part of a day trying to find spots that would be worth it, even with a discount. Here's a hint, most of them aren't. But one of them is (okay, it's THIS ONE!), with or without a "gift certificate." If http://restaurant.com is good for one thing, it's that it lead me to Whitman's because this place is great. So, you've all heard about the Juicy Lucy ($10) - yup, it's as good as they say (they had a few versions the night I was there, we had the one with blue cheese. Amazing). But do you know about the Turkey Burger ($12)? Because, with crushed avocado, sprouts, cilantro mayo, a slightly sweet toasted sesame seed bun, and some melted cheddar (for $1 extra), it was the BEST I've ever had. And what about their Crack Kale ($4, indeed crackalicious) or the Bowl of Local (WHOLE!) Pickles ($4) or the Organic Sweet Potato Fries (a big bowl for $5)? Because those are all absolutely delicious, too. We were burger focused, but I noticed they have some non-burger options, like a Grilled Cheese (upon which you can add bacon and an egg and ohmygod I need that now for $8) or Grilled Chicken on a bed of Arugula ($10), if you're trying be all healthy and all New Years Resolutionary (in which case, lame!). In short, you or your lady friend will probably find something you like. The wine selection is not great, but they have an assortment of solid, somewhat basic beer options that pair nicely with burgers (all are about $5-$7). Our waiter was incredibly friendly and helpful. And yes, the spot is kind of like your parents' basement (complete with space heater), but it's cozy and warm, and the perfect place to fuel up on burgers on a winter's eve. Its kind of random, this little place that no one seems to ever really talk about...? As someone who tends to know a little too much about the downtown restaurant landscape, I was very surprised when I walked by about a year ago and saw a place that I'd never heard mentioned in any of my blog-stalking. It looked cute and cozy, but had maybe one customer, a bearded man with a juicy burger dripping over his hands. I guess part of its anonymity is that you can't totally tell there's a whole cozy basement downstairs instead of a few stools extending back to a mini counter. And maybe its not noteworthy because really, the place is cliche in a way... think: chalkboard standing outside on a small patch of astroturf, reading "Put Bacon on Everything", salvaged wood walls, antiqued stools lined up along the wall with white-tiled backsplash. The menu, even while you KNOW you're going to love it, sounds like every other gastropub... short rib burgers, beer sausages, variations of kale, and a fried egg on pretty much anything. But don't disregard so fast. Yes, you do like the sound of it because yes, it's good. And that's why the concept has been done so much. They do that concept justice. The chunky blue cheese dressing on my wedge salad, the ridges on the panko-fried pickles, the sweet sauteed white onions piled on the plate inside the curl of the beer sausage, the old bay seasoning on my sweet potato fries... all little details that make it just a notch better. On the lookout for interesting flavor combinations, Whitman's contends for their outlandish burgers. Has been on my list for a while, but Avenue A can be a trek sometimes. PB&B Burger ($9) - I am a full believer that peanut butter can go well on anything if done right. The burger starts out well, but the ratio of PB to Beef leaned a little too much to the peanut side. The temperature of the patty melts the peanut butter almost immediately, making for a messy meal to say the least. This sandwich would do better with just a light spread of PB and maybe a slice of cheese in between. The burger comes by itself, so felt the need to order some sweet potato fries ($5) which were decent. On the drinks end, got a glass of wine ($9) since they didn't have any hot drinks. To me their burger is good - the kale chips were very good (and interesting), fries with blue cheese was only alright. The place can handle about 30 people tops and thus is a small restaurant. So about the burger - i had the Juicy Lucy and my buddy had some spicy burger. The spicy burger was very spicy! Be careful what you wish for b/c that burger may be beyond some people's heat threshold. The spicy burger though - was just too spicy and overwhelmed anything else you could taste. The Juicy Lucy - was good, but not amazing. The cheese i felt could have had a bit more flavor. To me it was a little bland, but the meat flavor was alright. I had walked passed Whitman's multiple times before finally trying it out with some friends. From the street it almost looks more like a barber shop than a restaurant but when you go inside you are hit by the smells of sizzling beef. While you do feel the instant hipster-vibe upon entering the server was quite nice and attentive with many suggestions when we sat down. The group of employees in total were a fascinating group. Women tattooed from head to toe in outfits to show off as much of their skin ink as possible. Also how they walked in some of the shoes they were wearing almost distracted me from the real reason we were there - TO EAT! But dining with what one could consider performance art was an additional treat. It is a pretty small space so I wouldn't go with anymore than 4 people. Once you get nestled in I recommend getting the Juicy Lucy with the pimento cheese in the center of the burger or what I had the Juicy Bluecy. The Bleucy is not technically on the menu but was recommended by the waiter. It is a burger stuffed with blue cheese aka heaven. They have great blue cheese fries and fried pickles as well. They have a few good craft beers on tap on a rotating schedule from which you can get pints or pitchers. Two cautions, it was a bit warm in the restaurant the day we went and they are cash only. GET THE FRIED PICKLES! Perfectly fried to the crisp, so juicy and not overly salty (like some others I've had). It was paired with a chipotle-mayo type sauce and I just could not stop eating it. As for the burgers, there were a good amount of selections for beef and chicken. I got the Juicy Lucy and my boyfriend got the Bluicy Lucy. The burgers were quite similar except my burger was stuffed with pimento cheese, and his with blue cheese but both delicious. It's quite a bit smaller than I expected and brought on a feeling of disappointment and sadness when the waitress brought it to the table. :( Despite the size, it was a delicious burger that was perfectly done. The inside was hot and juicy as promised. It was my first time having kale chips and it was interesting but a little greasy for my taste (but ok for other people). What I really enjoyed was the wedge salad! The dressing was delicious. I wasn't disappointed with the food, but probably will not be back because it's overpriced for a tiny burger. On a Sunday afternoon, they had no beers on tap. The wait-staff were two college-aged girls who looked like they'd rather be somewhere else. 2.5 stars Came here with a weekend with a Gilt City certificate on a Saturday afternoon. There were a few others dining on the main level, so we decided to head down to the lower floor for a quieter atmosphere. We split the Juicy Lucy, the PB&B (peanut butter and bacon) burger, crack kale, and a mug of pale ale (which all came to about $30, not bad). The burgers were small, as other reviews have mentioned, though the Juicy Lucy is pretty hefty and well.. juicy. It was good at best, definitely not one of the best burgers I've ever had. I was also not a fan of the PB&B. I love bacon, and the peanut butter adds a unique flavor, but the pairing wasn't really delicious. I think what makes Whitman's different from other burger places is their crack kale (a salty and slightly sweet flash fried kale) and the fried pickles (fried slices of pickles with tasty dipping sauce). Sure, they make the meal unhealthier than it already is, but they make for good greasy sides. Service was also commendable--I thought our waitress/server was very nice and came down to check on us often enough for being the only customers eating on the bottom floor. I love fried pickles. While I was in NYC, I had a fried pickle craving that lasted several days, so I sought out a solution. My friend and I wound up at Whitman's today around 5:00. We walked in and saw a counter with 2 tables or so in the first room. Off to the side we spotted a set of stairs. After looking around the area, and clearly looking lost, we asked the lady behind the counter if there was more restaurant downstairs. I'm glad we asked instead of settling for what we saw when we first arrived. Downstairs has much more seating, although that's compared to like the 2 tables on the first floor so don't expect much. There were candles on the table and the place looked cute - to the point that the items on the menu (burgers, sandwiches and fries) felt out of place. I ordered fried pickles and a BLT with avocado. With a 20% tip, my total was about $19. The fried pickles really lacked flavor in the batter, didn't seem salted when they were freshly out of the fryer and the ends were spicy, whereas the other chips defiantly were not. My BLT was pretty basic and boring. The bread was sliced thick. The bacon wasn't extremely flavorful. It was just lacking. My friend did enjoy her kale salad. Also, as she's new to fried pickles, she said they weren't bad. As a fried pickle enthusiast and her friend, I'll be introducing her to others! When we walked in, it wasn't busy so we sat upstairs. It sorta has a rockabilly vibe to the place and was playing classic old school rock (which I really enjoy). The place was pretty quiet and other than my boyfriend and I there were 4 other people in there. It took close to 20 mins to receive our 2 burgers and fries. The food was good but not worth the money. $25 for 2 burgers fries and 2 iced teas is a little rediculous. If you want a better burger in the neighborhood go to Pauls on 2nd and 8th. read more

We came here for lunch the other day and it was a little more than decent. The service and decor were average. I was a little bummed that they had no lemonade or iced tea, both of which were on the menu. In general, the menu wasn't too thrilling, but I'm sure glad that I went with the special, which was the "Juicy Blue-cy" - A twist on their classic "Juicy Lucy", filled with blue cheese instead of pimento. I got the Upstate Burger with cheese and bacon - ate it within 2 minutes because it was so good. Everyone at my table raved about their burgers too. We got way too many sides - I'd recommend 1 side for every 2-3 people if you're getting burgers. One side per person is way overdoing it. It's a smaller, cozy place with a very laidback atmosphere. I heard great things about this place reading reviews from Yelp and also the A Hamburger Today blog. The place itself is a small little restaurant with seating in the basement and on ground level. The atmosphere is very cozy and the waiters are very relaxed. The burgers itself did not live up to the hype. I actually think that the burgers were overcooked and the crust of the burger actually seemed burnt. I ordered the juicy lucy and despite the warning that the cheese may squirt and is hot, mine was almost solid and not hot at all. Maybe if the burger was hotter and the cheese was melted, this juicy lucy would have been better. The burger itself tasted very bland and needed more salt and seasoning. I have to say that Whitman's was a disappointment because the burgers weren't great but just OKAY. I also ordered a side of fries and they were good at first, but quickly became soggy and dry. Also, the crack kale is way over served - you don't need such a heaping amount as it's really quite rich. It's this hidden gem in the East Village. i've probably walked by this place 1000 times within the past 3 years of living in the area and it's unfortunate it took me so long to find it. Anyway, I love burgers and I've tried my fair share of the "big ones" in the city--Minetta Tavern, JG Melon, Burger and Barrel, Burger Joint (tourist trap by the way), Shake Shack, Paul's, and others. Whitman's is really good, one of my favorites. I had their signature burger "the juicy lucy" with an egg it was sooooooo good--the meat was quality, the filled cheese, the bun, egg--delicious. On to the review. FOOD Fantastic. My girlfriend and I had the juicy lucy, crack kale (deep fried seasoned kale--soooo good), and the grilled chicken club--all were great, I loved my burger, the chicken sandwich was great, and the crack kale was good too. SERVICE/DECOR Pretty quiet. Like I said before it's a really small/simple burger shop. Clean. They do have a lower area that I didn't get to see, I was seated in the main entrance area. I always say I want to have a burger but rarely do, because I try not to eat too much meat. But I tried the Juicy Lucy burger and it was so good I didn't want to eat it because then it would have been gone. It's super juicy, with its molten pimento cheese center, and lettuce, tomato, caramelized onions, and pickles. Perfect without condiments, you do have the option to add bacon or jalapeño slices. Next time I'll definitely go for the peppers, to add a little heat and balance the sweetness of the onions. The bun could have been a bit sturdier under the awesome sauce that spills out from the onions, but overall this is one of my favorite burgers ever. I also tried the iceberg wedge salad, with bacon and croutons, and blue cheese dressing, which was a refreshing complement to the burger, and the pulled chicken sandwich on Pullman toast, which was delicious but could have used a roll. read more

On a late Saturday evening, we were having a strong craving for fried pickles and found the closest place to us via yelp. Seeing delivery was offered, we were excited but a quick call set us back - no delivery to Stuytown. I find that odd as it's about 6 streets away - i know places that are further and would eagerly deliver. after some deliberation, we decided to brave the weather and get some burgers and pickles. All i can say is that even though I was not hungry, the portions STILL seemed small. If I was hungry i could probably easily eat 2 of the burgers and still be hungry. We had the juicy lucy, which was good but was not very hot. Maybe it sat out too long while waiting for our pickles. It was juicy, and cheesy, but just didn't really stand out in any way. The pickles on the other hand were a little disappointing. They were too thin, not crunchy enough and the special sauce was bland. burger + picles + tax =$15. OH.MY.GOODNESS!!! This place is absolutely amazing! Came here very imprompteau about a week ago, was looking for a good burger. This place definitely fits the bill for that! I ordered the Blucy Lucy, burger stuffed with blue cheese, and it was absolutely one of the best burgers I have had in the city thus far. Other people order the regular Juicy Lucy, and apparently that was delicious as well! The atmosphere of this place is adorable, they have a few seats upstairs, and then some downstairs as well. LOVE the Juicy Lucy. This is my new favorite burger of NYC and will definitely come back for a burger fix. It's all in the name- it was incredibly juicy, and I loved it. There was some issue that caused our food to take a while to come out- but the waiter acknowledged it and brought out some chips, which were great, to make up for the time. The sweet potato fries are good. The crack Kale was interestingly good- it's definitely a good shareable portion. The blue cheese fries were OK- but blue cheese isn't really my favorite anyway. I do believe I have found the holy grail of burgers, and it is a Juicy Lucy. I have been meaning to go here since they opened, but I'm a bit of a shut-in so that never happened. And then Whitman's popped up on Seamlessweb, so that meant it was ON. I'm kind of glad that my first taste of a Juicy Lucy was a private experience, because it was a little X-rated. I think my neighbor thought I had a "friend" over. The delivery guy was pretty cute, but it had been a long day and I was in sweats and the apartment was a mess and he had another order with him, so he had places to be. But me and Lucy? We got DOWN. Now a days, a cafe throws a hockey puck on an Entenmann's bun and declares "best burger in town." It seems that there is no governing body for that title. So you'll pardon my skepticism when I hear a place has one of the best burgers in NYC. Fortunately for me, Whitman's lives up to the hype! The food is astoundingly good. I absolutely love the Juicy Lucy. I also once had the hot dog, which was also off the charts. They have some good beers as well, and there is plenty of sriracha, which is a big plus in my book. And while the burgers are among the best in the city, it is not what keeps me coming back. What really makes the place incredible in my mind is the blue cheese dressing.... That's right, I said it. Something as simple as that has made Whitman's a draw. Get it on their Wedge salad, and you will be quite pleased. Get it on the fries, and you will re-enact the Katz's scene from When Harry Met Sally!!! My wife and I dream about it. I mean that with sincerity. Frankly I feel it could be used to solve for world peace. Other than that, the place is cool. The decor is very fun (albeit a bit hipster for my taste), and the servers are alright (a few space cadets from time to time). But who the F cares, with burgers and blue cheese like that! Oh Hell-to-the-No! It was bad enough the hostess told me and my guest to seat ourselves downstairs (in what apparently is the "East Hell" section of the restaurant) but then when we are presented with our food, a teenage roach ran up on us to help himself to our entrees! I had to giddy-on-up cuz I was DONE: We were seated next to the kitchen so I don't even wanna imagine what types of creatures were all up on the grill! It's one thing to think a place might not be sanitary, but it's another thing to know it definitively aint!
