Soup is salty, inconsistent food at various times that I've been there. Coffee not fresh, burgers taste rubbery like they are taken out of the freezer. And the prices inflated for what you get. The waverly melt was good with the onions but the fries were very mid. The Reuben was also open faced which was unexpected (and not exactly what we wanted). Outrageously expensive! I went with my daughter. We ordered a plain grilled cheese and a turkey club with avocado. The club was $28 !!!! The avocado added an additional $6. It's outrageously expensive. And the owner charges 3.5% credit card surcharge. So we paid $70 for a grilled cheese, turkey club, and a coke, tax and tip. I was staying in the West Village. This diner and the Washington Square Diner were both nearby. I visited this one for a quick late lunch because it's right above the W. 4th St. Metro stop. The menu is quite extensive and I think anything can be ordered at any time. After looking through the entire menu, I opted for a Western omelette with hash browns and wheat toast, and a "fresh homemade" lemonade. The omelette and potatoes were served in a skillet, but I don't think they were prepared in it. The omelette was more done than I like, and the hash browns not as crisp as I like, but they were fine. as was the lemonade. There were a lot of other interesting things on the menu, and their dessert selection looked very good. Ahhhh... it just feels like home. Stopped in with a friend for rice pudding and apple pie (see below). HEAVEN! Good coffee. Good service with a classic diner interior (and don't forget that classic neon sign). I need to expound on the apple pie a moment. No shade to the rice pudding (some of the best in the city), but that apple pie... it's... well, it's close to perfect. I don't like sweet and this pie is not too sweet. We always try to find a good diner for any trip we take. We stumbled upon this place after a long stroll after we got our early morning coffee and thought - now this is a diner! Right when you walk in, you know this place is packed with locals and regulars. Everyone knows each other and the staff is extremely friendly. We ordered the corned beef and hash along with some sweet waffles. Both were absolutely AMAZING! We ate well and recipes before our next long walk ahead of us. Great breakfast spot! read more

But I'm a retro kind of girl and I am most definitely love my nostalgic diner. So my latest visit I had a spinach omelette sandwich and it was so exceedingly delicious and healthy and reasonably priced. I have had breakfast here a lot but I have stopped by for some lunches & it's hard to pass up their famous ever so delectable cinnamon rice pudding! I have been coming here since the 90's!! This was my go to diner when I came to the village in High School and College. I haven't been here in over 10 years because I moved but I'm always happy to come back home to NYC for great food. They are right on the corner and the subway is right there. They still don't disappoint. They certainly have renovated and brought themselves up to meet the needs of the community traffic. They did social distance and even have outside dining now. They had a temperature check machine but didn't use it. I was there on a Sunday morning before noon and was seated right away. I think because it rained so much this weekend, we had the advantage of it not being too crowded- Note to the world: Go out to eat when it rains. Their fresh lemonade was really refreshing and light. I wish there were free refills! We ordered french toast, eggs, Turkey sausage and the lox omelette. All amazing!! Real diner food at its Best!! Prices were very affordable. The Waverly has been a godsend during the Pandemic. They never closed, added two fantastic outdoor seating areas, and now has the inside open. As always, the food is beyond incredible. Was across the street at Starbuck ordering a cold Latte and tutty fruity drink which I was not able to recall. I needed to go to the bathroom and because of COVID 19- they will not let you use the restroom even when you order something. Ran over to Waverly Diner, this diner has been here forever. Good place to take friends coming into town for breakfast and visit the West Village. The guys here were awesome. I placed an order for a Cheese Burger Deluxe and used their bathroom. Hey, Waverly Diner--what's with the attitude? If I had mentioned I was dining alone, I would have been sat at a table (which, btw includes 2 chairs!!!) immediately. Furthermore, this diner has been around FOREVER--the wood paneled walls can attest to that. Usually, upscale restaurants require all parties to be present upon seating. I get it. However, I was going to start my order upon seating. Not cool. After that unpleasant and unnecessary dialogue, my friend arrived and we got seated; perusing the menu. She, being on the Whole 30 plan and looking to follow the restrictions. Speaking for myself, I ate earlier and was looking for a small bite. Problem solved. My friend ordered an avocado omelet which looked pretty good. As diners have a gazillion menu pages, I settled on a side of avocado since my friend was going to give her toast to me (not part of the Whole 30). What can I say, I was in the mood for avocado toast and it was not on the menu despite their menu devoting an entire page titled "everything avocado". Hmmmm. This diner must have missed the entire avocado toast invasion which has been around for several years. The diner has absolutely no atmosphere but it was jam packed. Go figure. As mentioned, the décor was '70's wood paneled walls--nothing more than table, chairs and a few framed photos hung on the walls. It has a following though. Regardless, it was my friend's recommendation and we were looking to catch up (she also mentioned she'll occasionally grab a bite here when in the area). Speaking for myself, I don't believe I ever visited. My friend enjoyed her omelet and I made my "avocado toast" work. We were both satisfied. I am very inclined to give 1 star, but my friend and I occupied the table for a couple hours, our water glasses were frequently refilled, and I'm feeling generous. Besides, some of the food being brought to other tables looked good (example: Belgian waffles with strawberries and steak fries). This means, I might return. Maybe.
