I asked what was going on and from the back area the two cooks started on our food. Not before I said something. The Ma's Meatloaf Sandwich was a hamburger patty chopped served between two pieces of white bread. It was terrible to say the least . The mash potatoes were ok. Wife said the Rubin was 6/10. The first time I went the place was very busy so I wasn't upset service was super slow. I could see the server was working hard. The breakfast food was mediocre but the prices were appropriate. Gave it another try because of the nostalgic set up and it wasn't busy the second time. However, the service remained very slow and our server was not very helpful. She never gave my son a kids menu to color on. Some random man came up long after we ordered and apologized that she didn't. She wasn't unfriendly but wasn't friendly either. Staff is friendly. HOWEVER, food is not great. They had a turkey dinner special for lunch. No stuffing and the turkey was turkey loaf - horrible! Potatoes were yuk, even the dinner roll. This is a fairly typical cafe but with a bigger dining area akin to a Denny's. As others have stated, it does look smaller on the outside than it actually is. Parking is either on the street or in the lot across. They offer wi-fi but be aware it's open, no password needed (as I'm finding with a lot of local establishments). We felt the prices were a bit high overall. Loved that they had nice hot water in the restroom to wash your hands with! Seat yourself when you walk in. There is lots of wood finishes so it is a bit darker inside with the only natural light coming from front and back windows, but gives it a cozy feeling. We were there before the lunch rush, around after 10AM. We ordered breakfast while commers after us ordered lunch and got theirs and finished before us. When we inquired, the waitress explained the gentleman at the counter had meatloaf and mashed and that it simply needed to be warmed up. Made sense (wondering if it were microwaved now) but the other couple guys a table over had sandwhiches/burgers & fries so I felt it was a poor excuse. I would have had more respect for a simple explanation. Despite that, we were satisfied with our meals. It came out in waves. My Mom was very happy with her eggs ordered medium and stated this is the first time anyone cooked them perfectly! Her hashbrowns were a bit over crispy while mine seemed to have been just right. Her pancake was neither fluffy/cake-like nor deflated and rubbery but somewhere in the middle, as she likes them. I enjoyed my french toast as it was done also somewhat in the middle of doneness but with the small slices could have used another. The bacon was a bit rubbery for my taste, not crisp. I could cut it with a fork and eat it that way. As others have also commented, there was a good amount of grease used, reminiscent of how my grandma used to cook it all in one cast iron pan. Great flavor, just be aware if you are cutting out fats. The coffee was good, a brand I had not heard of before but we could have used warm ups a little more often. They don't offer real cream nor sugar substitutes. When I inquired on the yummy looking cookies and asked when they had been made, I was informed on the date and it had been approximately 2 weeks ago and was promptly offered to purchase a box of Girl Scout cookies (thin mints were the first to sell out of course) from the window counter instead. I suggest asking the made date before ordering dessert. It all comes down to your taste and preferences as everything is subjective. All in all, it was a decent and relaxing breakfast. Wish you could give half stars as this is a 4.5 star place so I am upgrading to 5 instead of 4. Small, unpretentious spot in a small town so I wasn't expecting much. The menu was extensive, service super, friendly staff and food that hit all the right marks. Patty melt was perfect. My son ordered the breakfast burger and it came open faced. He asked for a top piece of bread and they toasted it and even buttered it for him. Impressive! And then he devoured it. The dinner special on the board was all-you-can-eat fish for 13.99. when we asked for a re-order of fish, we were informed that "all-you-can-eat' consisted of an ititial order of two pieces, with a maximum of one re-order for one piece. This is not all-you-can-eat. This is a three piece fish dinner. Advertising it as "all-you-can-eat" is not just misleading, it is dishonest. Therefore, we will not be returning. read more

Stopped here on the way up North on Memorial Day weekend. The place was full but not packed however the staff was flustered and our food took an hour to arrive and it was wrong. If the kitchen is busy I understand that but if food is going to take over an hour then that should be communicated but our server never came back. I finally went to the counter to ask what the status was, since we were seeing people who ordered after us getting their food, and the other staff member at the register was condescending, loud and rude. My review is simple - this place is like Mom made your breakfast back-in-the-day. Small town midwest greasy breakfast at its best. You can see your food being prepared and smell the deliciousness for hours after leaving since it seeps into your skin and clothes. Worth it. Nothing fancy here, but that is OK because you are not in Sandstone, MN for fancy. Just keep sucking down coffee and eating piles of the best pancakes you will ever consume. Leave your skinny jeans and fedora at home because this place is filled with regulars who are pounding down coffee, devouring pancakes as big as your head, gossiping about the farmers down the gravel road, and shaking dice to win a few quarters. I stopped by Amy's for lunch. While they advertise all-day breakfast, I ordered a cup of coffee and then went straight to my lunchtime diner standby: a BLT. The coffee arrived and was reasonably good and strong (by rural MN standards). I had a friendly server who managed to not make any jokes about me being an astronaut or firefighter (chilly fall day, motorcycle gear). My BLT exceeded expectations - the bacon was cooked perfectly, nice thick slices and burned/crispy. A little too much mayo, which always happens, but really a good sandwich for the 4.10 I paid. Minor demerits for unseasoned crinkle cut fries and dill pickle slices instead of spears (which, btw, is still better than no pickles at all). Stopped in on our way home after camping at St. Croix State Park - what a treat! We had brocolli and cheese soup, chili (the best!), huge hamburger with hand cut fries and egg salad on a croissant. Very cozy small town cafe. My boys ordered pancakes and they were exactly what we envisioned. Homemade, fluffy goodness the size of a dinner plate. My husband is a patty melt and fries connoisseur and said they were delish. I had the chicken and dumplings soup which was very good. The only thing that wasn't up to snuff was my grilled chicken salad. Tomatoes and raw onions do not count as vegetables. Please add a little more to it for variety. Very good food. Very cheap without sacrificing quality--$5.25 waffle and bacon special. I had biscuits and gravy--biscuits were very good, almost like really thick pancakes, but fluffy inside. Ordered another one after the first one came. Hash browns were potato-y but flavorful and plentiful. Took a leap of faith in ordering grapefruit juice, and it was fine. Good coffee. But best of ALL, their hot sauce selection is surprisingly en pointe. There were at least two choices of Mexican style (Cholula, Tapatío, one green sauce, I think), Louisiana-style (Frank's, Tabasco, and Whatabutger-like hot ketchup), and Asian (two kinds of sriracha). For a small town in a state without a lot of local spicy food, this was really unexpected and appreciated. Free St. Paul and Minneapolis newspapers--would be nice if they had the local. Decided to try this place out on Sunday,May 26th because our usual place was closed for the holiday weekend. We went with some friends who had been there before and were not too excited by the experience but were willing to give it another try. BIG mistake! This was hands down the worst restaurant experience I have ever had. It started out good as we were impressed by the quaint setting. It went downhill from there. Took about 5 minutes to get menus and have our drink orders taken. About another 10 minutes to get our drinks, 2 waters and 2 coffees. Our friend asked for a glass of ice to cool off coffee and had to ask 3 times and was done with coffee before it arrived. We waited a half hour for our food and when it came they only brought our friends orders and they were wrong. They ordered 3 pieces of French toast with a side of hash browns and they both only got 2 pieces of French toast. They decided just to eat it because by this time they were hungry and just wanted to eat. About 5 minutes after they got their food we could see our food at the counter but our waiter was nowhere to be found. At this point another waitress takes our order to another table. 5 minutes go by and that table lets her know they got the wrong food. She brings it back to the counter and 5 minutes later our waiter tries to deliver it to us. We told him we did not want the food and would not accept it. He brings it back to the kitchen and in an annoyed voice tells them we won't tale it because it was on another table. Not only is this a health code issue but that food had already been sitting 15 minutes by this time. The waiter didn't stick around long enough for us to tell him we didn't want anything at this point so we told the other waitress who had grabbed our food that we did not want them to make our food as our friends were already done eating. The waiter stopped to ask if we wanted more coffee or water. We said "No. Just the bill." We waited about 5 more minutes and he brings out our food and no bill. At this point we got very upset and told him we had stated we did not want the food. We ended up getting up and leaving our friends to wait for their bill because my husband was afraid he was going to cause a scene if we stayed. Our friends told us the bill never came and they had to go to the counter to request it. This place is poorly run and disorganized. We will NEVER go back! It tells you a lot that after the experience here I went on the facebook page and the owner had a comment that says "Whoever said the customer is always right never worked with the public." This owner needs to remember that without customers she is just a kitchen. read more
