Whit's Frozen Custard in Hillsborough, NC is tucked away in a small shopping corner. In front of the ice cream shop there is plenty of parking on a dirt parking lot. There are also a few tables out in the front to sit at after getting your custard / ice cream. The inside of the shop is small and can get very packed and busy in side. They have a freezer selection that is stocked with flavors of the day or different types of custards depending on availability. Near the register there is also another freezer that has the ice cream sandwiches and other treats. I like Whit's because they do a rotating flavor of the day, a flavor of the week, and flavor of the month. They have a calendar of flavors on their website and socials. (i.e. Facebook or Insta) The menu is pretty expansive offering sundaes, to whitsers, and other such creations. The real star of the show is the custard. It is very creamy and pretty sweet. It is definitely one of my favorite ice cream shops in the Triangle. I haven't had any bad experiences coming here per say but sometimes the young cashiers at the front can seem a bit ignorant and stare you down when it comes to tipping. Went on a 70 degree Sunday in January so there was a little bit of a line inside, but it moved pretty fast. They have a good system down, and I'm sure it can get very busy in there during peak season! Sooo many things on the menu that I wanted to to try! I ended up with a small Hawaiian luau minus the macadamia nuts. They add all the ingredients into their vanilla custard for this one...so it was pineapple, banana, and toasted coconut. The base vanilla custard was awesome, and overall it was delicious and a huge portion for just about $5! We ventured off the MST to make this a stop on our walk. It's super close to the trail, and a must visit! They did have signs up that they were closing for winter break the following day (I'm sure they weren't expecting 70s in January). I'm so thankful they were open and we got to try them! We will be back next time we visit Hillsborough! An automatic 5 stars for this one. Why? Well, Whit's ice cream is the most creamy, tasty kind of ice cream i'd ever have. With the multitude of flavors that Whit's has, I don't think I would ever try them all (even though I normally get Mint-Oreo Chip). Though the interior is a bit lacking, opting for the quaint creamery vibe, which I still appreciate. I have nothing really to say about the service, because the few times I went I was afraid to talk to the cashier. It's not their fault, its just me. But overall this is one of the best spots in the Hillsborough area, and heres a recommendation: get some Whit's and head over to gold park for a picnic with your pals! read more

I gave this a 5 and I don't even like custard! This is a cute little place that I am sure is packed in the summer. We were there when it was about 30F so not so busy.. The girls working were very nice and gave you a chance to sample a few options before ordering. The seasonal flavor when we went was peppermint candy with chocolate flakes!! Excellent. I love frozen custard and Whit's is pretty tasty! My husband and I shared a vanilla custard with pecans, butterfinger, and butterscotch sauce. The pecans were left in halves and were delicious. I thought the flavor of the custard and toppings was spot on, but it became very liquify/melted quickly even indoors in cooler weather so I am not sure if that was due to the butterscotch or if the custard that day was just a bit thinner than I am used to. Great custard and family spot we love, but come on WHIT's staff... Closing improvements highly recommended for this place!! Stood in line with our 2 year old and a few others in line while we waited on custard for our child and then they announced they were closed at the 1st of 3 groups (we were 3rd)... okay, no problem, BUT, they decided to serve the 1st person/adult and served a custard for the dog too, and the 2nd person/adult, and then when the 2 year old walked up (last person to serve) the girl said "we are done serving." The 2 year old was last in line... I mean, why would you serve 2 adults (and a dog) after closing that we stood with in line for the last 10 minutes and then not serve a 2 year old a kids vanilla when that was the last person to serve... poor kid feel on her hands and knees crying. Yummy frozen custard and lovely staff! Whit's is a very welcome addition to the neighborhood. They have two flavors of frozen custard (chocolate and vanilla) which are constantly being made fresh by a large machine in the back of the shop, and you can have the custard mixed with candy, fruit, sauces or nuts to create whatever flavor combo you want. There has been a steady stream of locals there every time I've been by since they opened, and everyone seems pretty happy! The shop is located in the middle of the little commercial strip of shops and bars on S Nash St in Hillsborough, and there's a large gravel parking lot across the street. read more
