This was my first time doing grocery pick-up here and it was overall a great experience. I placed the order on the Amazon app for the 12-1p window and my order was ready well before that. They of course kept what needed to be refrigerated refrigerated but it was nice to know that there wouldn't be any delays. The pickup area for the actual groceries vs the Amazon pickups wasn't obvious but an employee immediately asked if I needed help (bc I clearly looked a little bewildered lol) and when I told him I was there for grocery pickup he asked my name and as luck would have it he was the man I needed to see. My groceries were nicely packed in reusable Amazon bags and all of my requested items and / or replacements were in stock and accurate. Parking at this location can be tricky bc it's generally a very busy lot and the delivery tractor trailers also use a portion of the lot which makes for a little hectic-ness. Solid store - rarely shop here but want to call out a few things; gets busy really quickly inside, parking lot although large can get congested easily. This Whole Foods has a big responsibility serving those who likely walk here or are otherwise reside in Montclair. It's pretty evident when going inside as it is significantly smaller than the West Orange location only a few miles away. The aisles just feel cramped as does the ready and hot food buffet. When the workers are doing any kind of restocking you may as well clear out of that aisle because it's like a delivery truck on a tiny street, an inconvenience. The parking lot is a decent size, but coming in and leaving out on the Bloomfield ave. part is a pain. Other than that, it's the same old Whole Foods you know and love just...compacted. I very rarely go to this location because it always some sort of issue and it's a shame because it is the closest to my home. Today, I go to return a salad dressing that was $8.00 because it tasted horrible as if it had gone bad. The gentleman stated that because of covid they were not taking items back in the store. This to me is crazy because if the store sells you a rotten item, the customer should swallow the cost. To me, this is unethical on so many levels. Yes, I understand that they may not want an item in-store that they don't know if it is contaminated or not, but they should do like other stores or other whole foods. Was in the Montclair Whole Foods the other day for the first time. Stopped in the meat department first and was greeted by a man named Michael. He helped me pick out some meat and even recommended a type of beef I never heard of before. Mock tender steaks. They were excellent. Michael was very knowledgeable and answered all my questions thoroughly and he then even proceeded to take the time to walk me through the store to find 4 other items I needed after I told him I had never been there before. Been coming here a while out of convenience and usually buy the 365 private brand stuff as it's cheaper and good quality, but pretty consistently now they are out of stock on their 365 brand cheerios, peanut butter, pasture raised eggs, frozen broccoli, blueberries & Brussels sprouts. These are like basic items. Not many other reasonably priced alternatives when these are out. And doesn't appear to carry Diamond crystal kosher salt anymore? To me, that's like the only actual cooking salt worth using. The store has a lot of empty shelves in some areas and seems to have trouble restocking and keeping up with inventory. I'll start by saying I wouldn't do my regular shopping here because it is on the expensive side, but if you are looking for specialty items or high quality fruit, meat, and cheese this place is great. The cheese section is second only to cheese specialty shops. The fromagers are knowledgeable and very helpful and the selection of cheeses and accompaniments are top notch. The produce section is also great, fruit is fresh and they also have a lot of specialty items. The bakery is also great and pretty dangerous too since by the time I get there I have already spent too much money. The only thing that keeps this from 5 stars is the parking which is usually an obstacle course. This Whole Foods packs a decent punch for its size. It has the best cheese selection of the Whole Foods stores in the area, even better than the one in West Orange, which is surprising considering how small overall this location is. I really appreciate how each cheese is well labeled including the type of rennet used (especially for those of us who keep kosher). Lots of vegetarian rennet options which are often hard to find. The store also has a very good fish and dairy section. The fish is always fresh and well cut - no bones in the salmon. The produce is nicely maintained as well. Two complaints: First - they often run out of white, free range eggs. I wish they kept more of these in stock. If you keep kosher, this is an issue. Second, I once bought olives and there was a long hair in it. I realize it happens but it was still unpleasant. Parking can be a challenge at most times but there usually is a spot. This branch gets wackier by the year I was at the soup station today, which is right under the hot food. A guy who I assume to be an employee comes from behind the food area and hovers over me looking at food. I asked him if I was in his way. He politely told me no, he was just checking the food. With his hands he took a yuca friend, popped it in his mouth and then took a chicken finger and walked off I watched him. He had a burgundy coat - no uniform, about 5'6 and a west African accent. When the Starbucks lease was up they took over that space in the front as well, but its still a smaller Whole Foods. Its fine, has the usual Whole Foods choices and options, although not as many perhaps as one of the bigger stores. This "whole" store needs to be re-vamped. I hate coming here. I rarely do accept when I'm left with no other choice for a certain product. Today I have decided to just never come back and to do without or go to another store. I accept the small space. I accept the variety of foods and goods. Every bad experience I've ever had here has been directly related with employees. Coming here is more like a Foodtown experience while paying whole food prices. For example, I just left the Montclair, New Jersey location and had all of my food rung up and thrown in a pile at the end of the register. The cashier had ignored me the entire time even when I tried making polite conversation and had begun ringing up the next person while I struggled to bag my food. The only communication we had was her non-verbal cues that she was annoyed I was in her way while she was "just trying to do her job." Why don't the cashiers help you bag? I ignored that since I was only looking for one particular bread, so I made my way to the aisle marked "Bread". Surprise - NO BREAD in the bread aisle. Found actual bread a couple of aisles over from the "Bread" aisle. To no surprise, almost every loaf I picked up was already past the "sell by" date. My review is only about their hot foods selection. I've come here a few times for lunch since it's only a few blocks away from my office. Service has always been friendly. Generally, I opt for their meal, one main choice of protein and two sides. Lately, however, I've been obsessed with their Tequila Lime Turkey Chili. It's divine. The consistency is not soupy but rather thick and hearty. The veggies, beans, pulled turkey and a touch of spice all come together nicely. Not really sure if tequila is in fact an ingredient but I can tell that a cup of this stuff isn't cheap. A medium sized cup of chili costs six bucks. Thankfully it'll keep full and satisfied all afternoon. Due to the small size of this Whole Foods, the hot food selection is limited but satisfying nonetheless. The parking is quite limited here. There are probably only 25-30 spots on their lot. Despite that, I've never had a problem finding a spot when I go on weekday afternoons. This store is also relatively small compared to the TriBeCa store. However, I've always found what I am looking for so far. There is also a bakery and prepared food section in the store. Like all whole foods, prices are steep compared to conventional supermarkets like Shoprite. Last week, I came here to purchase a 9" vanilla buttercream cake with vanilla buttercream frosting for a birthday celebration. I asked the lady behind the cake case if I can try a sample of the cake to make sure it's the right flavor before I purchased it but she said no (the TriBeCa store's bakery guy let me sample the cake I was about to purchase in the past, don't know if he's a one off or not). I wasn't able to tell the color of the cake since it is covered in frosting. Anyway, I went ahead and paid for the cake. When I cut the cake 2 days later, it turned out to be a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting - not the vanilla cake I wanted. I called the store and explained the situation. The guy on the phone told me to come down and they will see what they can do but no guarantees as I already threw away the receipt. The next day, I came and it was a different guy on the customer service counter. I explained the situation again and he gave me a $26 gift card for the full value of the cake. I work in the area of Montclair Whole Foods at times and enjoy the selection of lunch items; however I just ordered a burger and onion rings and was excited to have a filling lunch. When I got in my work truck, immediately after paying, the onion rings were cold, and the burger was inedible since it was so over cooked. I mean they are dealing with grass fed beef which is why I ordered it, but it's not as fatty as "conventional" beef and care must be taken when cooking it. To make matters worse; I asked for ketchup and received 2 packs of sir Kensington condiment. Needless to say on top of everything else the ketchup expired august 3rd 2020, which is over 3 months ago. This review is for their relatively new delivery service called Prime Now. Before the merger with Amazon, Whole Foods used Instacart.com in the Montclair area to deliver their groceries. I live in Bloomfield and loved the service. They carefully screened the delivery people. And the app was very easy to use. You could buy 1 green pepper, 1 onion, and 1 avocado. It was very easy to buy single items of produce. I have no idea what team was in charge of developing this Prime Now app but it's really bad. It is not user friendly whatsoever for busy single people. The amazon app (the alternative) does not service the Montclair area. The team who designed this app botched the job and they really need to fix it to earn our loyalty back. In the meantime because I don't ave time to grocery shop, I'll just be using the more expensive Fresh Direct. read more
