I was a little concerned walking into this place initially. I arrived around 6:30 pm, and the place was empty. I continued in anyway. The staff was very friendly, and explained that a lot of people do takeout. I ordered the ultimate feast to get a taste of everything. I got potato salad (which was amazing), cheesy Corn (again amazing), and the chili which was really good for sides. I opted for 1 dinner roll and 1 corn bread to try both of those as well. I only got the volcano sauce, which the girl told me was very spicy and wanted to make sure that I didn't want other sauces to go with it. I opted to get the just volcano, and it was very spicy. Even for me who loves spicy food. Overall the food was very good. All the meat was tender and had little fat on it. My favorite things were the ribs that were some of the best I had recently, and the brisket. The corn bread was also really good. the dinner roll was a little dry, but once you load it up with delicious meat and sauce it was fine. My uncle and I went here for lunch today. I gotta tell you, it's about time there is real deal Q in this area. We couldn't decide on anything so we just ordered the Ultimate Combo. It had brisket, pulled pork, pulled chicken and ribs(I substituted the ribs for the smoked sausage), comes with 3 sides and rolls. Everything was just great. The potato salad was out of bounds. The baked beans had pulled pork chunks in them. The brisket was as tender as can be and the pork and chicken had great flavor. Sausage was good to. There was so much I could bring some home. The owner/manager came over and talked to us. A really nice guy. The sauces were good but the meat really didn't need it. They were a bit more on the sweeter side which I don't care for. And the Volcano sauce was real spicy but good flavor. This you have to ask for. I think if I had to say anything negative it would be that they don't sell collard greens or corn bread. I pass by here all the time but never stopped...today i had a coupon and a friend and i decided to try it....one of the best decisions i made. Never being here before i asked the hostess for help on deciding what to order...she was so patient and helpful. I decided (with her help) on the ribs..potato salad and cheesy corn. I told the manager (who was also extremely nice) these probably were the best ribs i have had in a long time. I stopped going to famous dave's because they were dry and tasteless the last few times i had been there...not these..they fell of the bone and were fantastic!! Been trying to checkout this place for months. Had the brisket plate with coleslaw and beans, add the ribs. Ribs were really good and served hot. The brisket and beans were also good, but they were only warm. The sauces were all tasty and was fun to mix and match. Place was good and friendly. But, the food needed to hotter. I'm originally from little rock (where Whole Hog is from) i grew up eating there. Some of my greatest memories growing up were while eating Whole Hog. when my grandma was elderly and not eating, if you put a Whole Hog Jumbo in front of her she would devour it. If you read my other reviews of philly "BBQ" places, i'm comparing them all to Whole Hog. when we were driving in a part of NJ that we only go to a few times a year (we live in Bucks Co PA now) i literally SQUEALED when i saw it. i didn't believe it. the sign had the same pig, and the same lettering as i remembered.... so i did my research and we were there the next day. wearing every piece of razorback gear i own. lol so with that being said, i was a little blown away by SOME of these reviews. 3 stars? hardly. but, most people just don't understand what REAL bbq is or they are use to NC or Texas bbq and don't get that there are many different types of bbq. this review is more explaining what Whole Hog is. comparing Whole Hog to "Famous Dave's" or for God's sake "Red Hot and Blue" is just sacrilege. they aren't even in the same LEAGUE as Whole Hog. Whole Hog's Jumbo pulled pork sandwiches literally weigh a pound (at LEAST), compared to Famous Dave's 1 tablespoon of mystery meat drowned in sauce that is completely unrecognizable. even the regular size is HUGE. Whole Hog is MANLY MAN meat, i can only eat half a jumbo and the leftovers are even better the next day. and no, it does not have very much sauce. because it is a dry rub. THATS THE WAY IT IS SUPPOSE TO BE. you're given the option to put your own sauce on it. and they give you six to choose from. right on the table. everyone should try cole slaw on their sandwich at least once. it's life changing. you'll start putting it on everything. (try it on chili) also, i personally love the buns at Whole Hog. no, they aren't anything fancy. but bbq isn't suppose to be fancy. the buns are able to hold-up to the amount of meat, slaw, and sauce that is put on them without falling apart. and the flavor of the buns doesn't take away from the most important part. THE MEAT. the first time we went to the Cherry Hill store, and i saw the bun... i just KNEW it was going to be "right." i almost cried.... almost. the ribs are ALMOST "fall off the bone" (which is the way they SHOULD be.) you should be able to take a bite easily and see your teeth marks and a smoke ring on it. my 7 year old daughter, who has never been to a whole hog.... ate a whole entire rack of ribs and then wanted more. she said they were the best she had ever had, and so did my husband. (also originally from NJ) if you like them saucy, just add more. but my 7 year old, BBQ sauce loving daughter thought they didn't need anything. and those bones were CLEAN. looked like a graveyard at our table. also, i'm ASSUMING that the reviews for "dry meat" actually means that there is not enough sauce. because the pork, chicken, and ribs that i had were all very moist, i've NEVER gotten DRY flavorless pork or chicken from Whole Hog. but i could see where some people would think that it needs more sauce. my husband is one of those people. but it's right there on the table for you, any type of sauce you could imagine. i don't know what to say about the reviews of "cold pulled chicken" because again... THATS THE WAY ITS SUPPOSE TO BE. order the half chicken next time if you want it warm? OR try it on a salad. i personally like the pulled pork salad but the chicken is pretty amazing on it. i bet if you asked to throw it on the grill for a minute they would. oh, and pulled pork nacho's are to die for. i can not personally comment on the brisket in good faith. i'm from arkansas. i don't like brisket or texas. lol so i've never ordered it. i craved Whole Hog potato salad for YEARS before they opened here. wish i could figure out what they do to it. the baked beans.... well, you'll never look at beans the same way again. my daughter HATES all beans. she ate these and liked them. the cornbread is something new on the menu, but its pretty darn good for a sweet cornbread, not to sweet. (i've always been more of a savory cornbread person) husband loved it. one of these days i'll try the cheesy corn. maybe i'll snag a bite if my daughter orders it, because i don't know how i will convince myself to order anything other than the beans and potato salad. i always get the slaw on my sandwich, so i know its good and perfect for that reason. Pork was dry and flavorless. Unless you add a lot of sauce. Ribs were salty and tough. Brisket is thin slices like corned beef. Absolutely no flavor in the brisket. Cole slaw don't eat it. Baked beans were ok but not that great. I got the $16.95 platter. So not worth it. I've tried BBQ from Carolina, Memphis, St. Louis and some of my favorite in Texas. Picked up an order to go on the 4th of July. I had pulled pork, ribs & brisket with beans and coleslaw. My wife had ribs and brisket with beans and cheesy corn. The meats were very good. The brisket was perfect, tender and juicy, excellent. Likewise, the pulled pork was juicy and flavorful, with good bark mixed in. The ribs were a little dry, not sure if that's because we didn't eat in, but they were tender and tasted good. The sides were excellent. Good coleslaw and baked beans tasted great. The cheesy corn was good too, I thought it would be like a corn casserole, but it is corn in cheese sauce. The cornbread was a thick hunk of the sweet, cakey variety, which I grew up on in the South. The only place you can get better barbecue in the Cherry Hill area is in my backyard! read more

OK I had some high expectations because a couple of friends had said things like "best I've ever had." Now I am no pro but I do smoke a lot of spares, shoulders, briskets (occasional) and I think I do a pretty good job. several thoughts. I want spares, not baby backs, more meat, tastier in my opinion. expensive here. I had the sampler plate for 1. it was a lot of food, but with a drink I spent $21. ok I can put away more than the average joe but I didn't take anything home and I was full, not stuffed. so I had brisket, pulled pork and ribs. brisket was dry. as another mentioned, sliced too thin, and I'm guessing sliced ahead of time. probably part of the reason it dries out. pulled pork was dry also. it taste decent, but dry. ribs were the best of the 3. I don't think I'll be rushing back. They are opening a location in Medford, close to my house. will probably try that one, when it opens, just to see if my experience here was an anomaly. Been here quite a few times, and it's a good, not too expensive place to stop and pick up dinner for the family (good size portions and party platter sizes). The food is good and hearty, not life shattering bbq, but good. Went in a few weeks ago after work. This visit, they were out of a lot of stuff, and the guy behind the counter wasn't very helpful or interested in our issues (think he was the manager). Day was saved by the young girl behind the counter, Emma I think. She steered us to some other choices, and even made a special combination for us because they were out of stuff. Had never been here but had a relative visiting form out of town and had been scoping out places to take them and it was on my list. When we came in we were not sure what to expect, sit down service or a fast food style setting, it seemed to be a hybrid of both of these things, which was fine. The decor was really fun, nice atmosphere, and the food was amazing, my aunt LOVED it, and I did to. You got a good amount of food, we both took half of ours to go, and the staff was super friendly and when I asked my aunt to pose in a spot with some fun decorations and they even let her hold the "boss hog"! Delicious local BBQ done on site. The smoked chicken and pork are really well done and full of flavor. The whole roasted chicken is perfectly pink and tender, and probably my favorite to order for my family. We often pop over to the grocery store for a last minute rotisserie chicken, but now this is a great and delicious alternative to add to the mix. The Mac n cheese is creamy and very cheesey, but pairs great with the bbq. The cornbread is probably the best I ever had, it's so so so good. My only complaint is they don't offer much in the way of greens. A basic salad is about the only option for a green side. I've been to whole hog cafe twice now. I've tasted everything on the menu, and I am not impressed. Below are my findings: - the brisket is lean cut, very dry, chewy, and not noticeably flavorful - the pulled pork is moist, tender, and forgettable - the ribs are smoked with a dry rub; underwhelming at best - the sausage tastes like a smokier version of store bought kielbasa - the pulled chicken is pulled chicken, move along - the sandwich rolls are dry and bland - the baked beans and potato salad are actually delicious; best two sides - the six different bbq sauces are good, but nothing special Overall, whole hog cafe lacks in both flavor and innovation. There is no Mac & cheese, no corn bread. It is very hard to get to, only accessible from the 70 west side. Couple this with the fact that it sits within two miles of two other bbq spots, and you're losing the argument as to why I shouldn't eat at the far superior Famous Daves or Red Hot & Blue. read more

Friday evening my husband and I decided to check out Whole Hog Cafe. We've driven by numerous times but there are never any cars there, so we were hesitant to try it. Being born and raised in Memphis, I have high standards for good BBQ and I have yet to find a great BBQ joint in the Philly region. Upon arrival we were pleasantly greeted by the cashier. This is a counter service restaurant. They have no liquor license and welcome patrons to BYOB. There were numerous tables in the dining room but no booths. There is also a party room. The restaurant is decorated with numerous BBQ contest trophies and has large mounted tvs for entertainment and it is a very clean establishment. The cashier recommended the Whole Hog Platter for $15.99 which serves two, so we got it. It comes with pulled pork, beef brisket, ribs (menu says 3 bones but they gave us 4) plus 3 sides and 2 dinner rolls. They give you cups to serve yourself soda and a # which they call when your order is ready to pickup at the counter. For our sides we chose potato salad which was very creamy and tasty, baked beans which were a bit too sweet, and the cheesy corn which was corn kernels in what tasted like Mac & cheese sauce or melted Velveta. The sides were piping hot but the meat was not. Our meats were served to us lukewarm - our meal was ready so quickly after we ordered so they probably just have loads of prepared meats they just toss on a plate. They should do temperature checks on it before serving or at least periodically. The brisket was meh and the pulled pork was dry. Each table has a variety of 6 BBQ sauces which you will need to moisten up your pork. The ribs were surprisingly tender and tasty. The dinner rolls were square rolls you'd find at the supermarket. We checked in on FourSquare and received a checking special of a free cookie with the purchase of an entree. They had a nice variety to choose from and we selected the blonde bar which was packed full of chocolate chips and a few nuts. Overall, it was an average dining experience. Would I return? Maybe. Very high end BBQ. The fact there that so much surface area of the premises is covered in trophies is a pretty solid barometer to that affect. Layout is typical of what you'd expect, service is too, up front counter & fountains, typical fare, but the service was a cut above. Solid 'B' to 'B+' range in that area. However, the food...Stellar. Pulled pork plate was about $8 and change to fantastic effect. 6 sauces on the table, ready. IIRC, #3, the hotter end one was my fav, though they all very well done, though the vinegar-backboned one was thin (shake it), but this is to be expected. "Volcano", per special order is aptly named. Try it, but gingerly. Recommended. 20 min wait for the cornbread and it was well worth the wait by design and apparent demand. Likely some cake mix in it, but whose to say. Impeccable. Think they close 9'ish, so take care, but definitely try this one on. Solid choice. read more

I eat out a lot being a truck driver. I try to hit all the BBQ places I see. I really enjoy good BBQ! And Whole hog does it right! The brisket is my favorite it is smoked perfect! I think it's the best around even better then Sweet Lucy's! The ribs are awesome too! The cornbread is one of the best I ever ate! But don't take my word for it, give it a try! read more

As a transplanted Iowa farm boy who grew up grilling/cooking pork on a regular basis, going to KC twice a year to eat BBQ in college, living in GA, TX, & MO while in the Army, I feel like I have a decent idea of what good BBQ is. This definitely counts. Nothing worse than overly cooked, dry pork. When I went I got a rack of ribs and some sides. I immediately tried the ribs dry and they were everything I was looking for, flavorful, moist, delicious pork. I also tried every sauce they had on hand. I'm certainly biased on KC style sauce being my favorite but the spicier one I enjoyed as well. The sides were ok besides the cornbread which I got an order to take home with me as I was leaving. My wife made several jokes about Iowa boys and cornbread but it was fantastic. Two points to take away from this: ribs and cornbread, get them. Bring beer to enjoy with your meal. Can't wait for new location in Medford to open so I can avoid that unholy traffic hell that is Cherry Hill. read more

While they had a variety of good sauces, the meat had to be covered in it. It didn't compliment the flavor of the meat because the pork, brisket or chicken had no flavor of its own. We also took off a star for the price. I got a sandwich meal that only came with one side and my boyfriend got a large meat plate, but the two sides were tiny. They came in sample size cups. Ate here for lunch on Tuesday. The outside appearance makes you think its a sit-down table service restaurant. In reality you order from the counter and operate more like fast food. HOWEVER, please don't shy away because of this. The food was outstanding! I had a half chicken and my friend had a pulled pork, pulled chicken combo. Had the two meat combo platter with brisket and smoked sausage. Corn bread was good but dry.No smoke on the brisket. I had the Mac and cheese and potato salad for sides, both tasted processed and not homemade. I asked the person at the Counter if they were homemade and she said yes. We went there on a whim and were very glad we did! It is some of the best BBQ we have ever had. The meat was delicious and tender. We had the ribs, pulled pork and brisket as a part of their hog platter. The fries were a prefect mix of crispy and fluffy. The cornbread was moist and flavorful. Even the green beans had an amazing unique flavor! The 6 different sauces brought some great variety with the different flavors, and all fantastic. Like a McDonalds BBQ. Gave my order at the counter, got my own soda and before I found a table, they were behind me with my food. 1/2 rack, beans and slaw with corn bread. Ribs were 'fall off the bone', which means they were over cooked. Beans were out of a can Slaw was ok but I make better Corn bread was mushy and heavy. Cherry Hill doesn't have many BBQ places so I wanted to give this place a try. I previously visited Famous Daves, which isn't so famous these days and back in the day I went to Red Hot & Blue (when it was booming). I'm into my ribs, so of course that's what I ordered. Ribs, cheesy corn, and beans. The ribs were awesome. Didn't really need the two BBQ sauces. The cheesy corn and beans were decent side items. I could take them or leave them. I had some leftovers, which I shared with my boyfriend who works in the area. Now he wants to take his coworkers to Whole Hog Cafe for lunch.
