Unfortunately, while their bagels and other food are quite good, the service is hit or miss. My mother called to ask about something and was treated somewhat rudely, so she went back to Einstein's. I brought her in again with other family and spoke to a manager who was apologetic and gave us some free samples, so I thought all was well. Not long after, I called about catering a meeting (which I do at least monthly) and was told by the person who answered the phone "we're really busy. Can you call back later?" I want to like this place and have enjoyed the food but they seem to have an ongoing problem with staff being rude. Einstein's catering is probably cheaper but these guys have better food and I try to patronize local businesses when I can. I always try to resolve a problem with management before leaving a review that's less than 4 stars as I hope that's what an unhappy customer would do for my business. There are a few groups in front of me, some waiting on custom breakfast bagels, and others ordering mass amounts of bagels to go. I could sense the newness of the place, the guys working the front seems a little confused, the line of people continues to grow behind me. Finally my turn and I order the TEC. I'm asked what type of bagel I want this on and I start to break out in a sweat. So many choices...should I try everything? Maybe salt or onion or poppy seed? I ask the nice guy taking my order and he recommends egg. Ok, egg bagel it is. I order a Zico coconut water to accompany my sandwich and pay. The owner rings up my sale and seems very nice. We partake in a little chit chat and I tell him I'm glad to see this place down South and good luck. 10 minutes later my sandwich arrives. I open up the paper and my eyes bulge. Beautifulness. Now time for the true test - open mouth and BIG bite. Heaven. This Taylor ham is something else. Very salty and similar to a cross between Spam and bologna. It was a perfect compliment to the egg and cheddar cheese. I sat there and ate every single crumb - with the thought of bringing it home to share not even crossing my mind. The service was slow and somewhat dismissive. The pastrami reuben was very dry and the meat tasted gamy. I expected a much better taste experience for the higher than usual price I paid. I ordered a dozen bagels and like that their baker dozen is 14 and not 13, but to want to charge an extra dollar to slice them was a turn off. Most places I frequent do not charge for slicing. I chose to keep it simple with a whole wheat bagel, turkey & egg, no cheese ( I was a bit intimidated with the large amount of cream cheese they put on their orders). After I ordered, I questioned whether or not I was actually going to like it because it sounds pretty simple and I was imagining your typical breakfast sandwich, but was pleasantly surprised with how savory the bagel sandwich actually turned out. The turkey was packed with flavor - this meal definitely did not need to depend on any extra sauce or cream cheese at all. I also tried my boyfriend's sausage, egg, and jalapeno cheddar cream cheese on poppyseed which surprised me with an equally strong flavor. I took my mom here and she said these bagels really did remind her of what she used to experience living in New York - a good amount of firmness to the bagel, and crispy outside if you get it toasted, yet still soft. I got a breakfast sandwich on an everything bagel toasted, and my friend got a blueberry bagel toasted with strawberry cream cheese. Came here around lunch time, so I opted for the $6.99 build your own option. I had pastrami and provolone on marble rye with deli mustard, lettuce, and banana peppers. I know this is a bagel shop, but the star of this meal was the pastrami. As someone else mentioned, Wholy Bagel's corned beef and pastrami is made with brisket, as opposed to a leaner cut of beef. That makes a world of difference. You can really taste all the yummy marbling and the beautiful smokiness, while the meat just melts in your mouth. And they are MORE than generous with their portions. My bagel sandwich was stuffed so full with pastrami, I could barely get my mouth around it for a bite. The bagel was a little overpowered by the banana peppers and provolone, but I had a bite of it by itself and it was great. Studded with caraway seeds with a great rye flavor. Chewy on the inside, and shiny on the outside, like it's been lacquered. The menu boards are a little confusing, not sure why the biggest board lists all the meats they have for sale.. can't they just put little price tags in the deli case like they do at HEB? I had to ask what kind of cheeses they have.. I would recommend a board that lists all the different kinds of bagels, meats, and cheeses. There's only one table here, and a 5 to 6 seat counter, so it's more of a grab and go place, though I chose to dine in and so did several others. Can't wait to come back to try their french toast bagels and the taylor ham, egg, and cheese breakfast bagel. Whoever wrote Holy Yuck cracked me up. It's not all that bad, it's just not all that good. First of all, it's an extremely bland environment. White walls and no newspapers. I mean, you're in a strip mall on William Cannon, you sort of have to work hard to make the inside of your place look interesting. I like the whole Which Wich free newspaper for the people waiting concept, myself. The everything bagel I got was fine. Whatever you do, though, don't ask for it to be heated! They will go off on you Jersey style if you do that. There's this short guy who runs the register, not the more mature concientious manager, and I think he's an aspiring Bagel Nazi, but you can tell he's way too nice to do a good job at it. I like the fact that they have tons of smears to choose from and they ask you if you want the schmear amount to be light, medium, or heavy. I went with the medium and still had to take a tiny bit off. I lived in New York for about 6 months, I figure, if you add up all my visits over the past decades, and I don't think this compares to the ones in New York. But, on the other hand, if I wanted to throw a nice brunch and was serving bagels, this, along with Einsteins, is one of the best places in town to get them. read more

I honestly did not think this place would ever open. But, Yay they did open!!! And it was worth the wait!!! The Nova Lox on Poppy Seed Bagel with scallion cream cheese, tomatoes and capers was so good I have not stopped thinking about it. The bagel itself had a soft center and a chewy outer that combined perfectly with the rich smoked salmon and onion flavored cream cheese and the tang of capers. At 8.65 with tax it seemed a bit pricey but it was worth every savored bite! The friendly proprietors Scott and Jennifer introduced themselves and Scott explained that he could custom make any bagel sandwich and Jennifer suggested the capers and tomatoes that I added to my Lox bagel (great call). The chalk board listed the lunch bagel sandwiches at 3.99 but obviously that excludes my 7.99 Lox Bagel:( Scott also explained that all their cream cheeses are made with fresh veggies and fruits. Aside from the cream cheeses and Nova Lox the deli case held Boars Head meats and cheeses for bagel sandwiches. They are obviously just getting open with no posted hours or prices (a slight peeve) but I wish them the best and welcome them to my hood! read more

Staff is getting better as business has grown. This place really has great bagels and a lot of other interesting stuff (particularly on weekends), much of which is imported from NYC. If you like Einstein Bros. Bagels and try this place you'll never go back. Bagels here are boiled (they only steam them at Einstein Bros.) and the difference is a much more substantial, tasty bagel. If you like coffee, try the only Manhattan Special Coffee Soda available in Austin (imported from NYC). This stuff is amazing, made from real coffee. I stop in every week and get a half a dozen bottles to keep in the house. Originally sold in Little Italy in NYC, it's a cup of excellent lightly carbonated coffee soda.
