If you read nothing else: FIVE STARS IS NOT ENOUGH. The long story: Whenever I'm visiting my parents in Santa Fe my first stop is always Whoo's Donuts. This time around I dragged my non-sweet-eating boyfriend with me and he is now suffering from an addiction to these incredible treats. Seriously, we've been in town six days and have eaten Whoo's Donuts - whether from the Farmer's Market or from their store - four of those days. I even bought a t-shirt, to represent my love for Whoo's on the East Coast. Needless to say, we've already put in a pre-order to take home with us, but for anyone lucky enough to live in Santa Fe, be visiting Santa Fe, or just passing through, get yourself a dozen donuts and pat yourself on the back for doing so. Amazing! I went on a cross country road trip with my husband and we tried doughnut shops across the country. Whoo's was both of our favorites! If I could rate this place a Zero I would. Ordered four different donuts, coffee and bottled OJ. Total bill was $18.18. These were the WORST donuts we've ever eaten and would have been better off grabbing prepackaged donuts from the convenience store! The donuts were so stale I bet they were at least 2 days old. The coffee was lousy. The only good thing was the OJ but that was a commercial brand in a sealed bottle. COMPLETE waste of money! Delicious. And unique! We got five flavors to try: Blue corn lavender Apple green Chile fritter Cherry almond cream Coconut cherry Cinnamon sugar Both of us liked the blue corn the best. I really enjoyed the fritter. It packs some heat!! I am amazed that you get the heat from the chiles but they are incorporated well so you don't taste any green chiles, just the apple fritter. BF doesn't usually like fancy flavored donuts so he chose the cinnamon sugar, which he felt was more normal. And it was the only one he didn't like. :) Lesson: be adventurous. Got here late so lots of the specialty donuts were already sold out. Donuts we got were kind of bland and stale, wondering if it's because we got here later in the day. Maybe will come again earlier to hopefully get more flavors and less stale donuts. read more

Boy, that was rough. Based on all the excellent reviews, all the recommendations I've had for this place, I was extremely disappointed. The donuts were OK, but the Corn Lavender was dry, the apple fritter was tough (presumably from being outside of the case), and the bacon bar had 6-8 small bits of bacon on it. The main kicker was the service we received. The gentleman who rang us up was very slow. While we were choosing our donuts, it definitely took a few seconds to register what we said. Maybe, high? Once we got our donuts, we ordered our coffee. I asked for a Mocha, my friend the dark roast. We sat down with our donuts, finished 2 off and had 2 left, but the employee was nowhere to be found. We had to yell to the back, he came out promptly, and apologized and said he'd work on it. He brought out my friends, wasn't a dark roast. He said, "Be right back with .....", it was extremely inaudible so I said, "Mocha". Right. He came back and got me another dark roast. As he handed it to me he said, "Here's your ....." inaudible again, so I said, "Mocha". He said, "Yes". Alas... why even let this guy run your store? I saw a woman and a man, presumably the owner. No check ups were made, and service after taking my money was nonexistent. I'm pretty disappointed but it looks like other reviewers are saying there's quite the decline in quality. Whoo's Donuts: Invest in a good manager. Invest in anyone that is assertive enough to bring your business back to good health. A manager who will absolutely take care of an employee like that and either make him better or fire him. I'm no local, but I am a donut fan. I have lived in Oregon, home of Voodoo Doughtnuts, and Albuquerque, where the famed Rebel Donuts is making a name for itself. I can easily say I am the person who will go out of my way for an amazing donut - picture walking five miles to get to your local Safeway because for whatever unfathomable reason, they have the best baker in town - that was me in college. Since being in New Mexico I have found myself lacking a truly good raised donut - sure, Rebel has good cake donuts, but those aren't my favorite style of fried dough. By happenstance I ended up in Santa Fe for the week, and Googled "donuts" to see what I'd find. Dunkin Donuts (sure), Krispy Kreme (because every town has one), and then the little guy, Whoo's Donuts. That got my attention. Someone who existed alongside the chains, but had significantly better reviews and looked local. I dropped in on Thursday morning, and snagged a Vanilla Chai donut and some sort of delightful berry creation. I was in heaven. Friday, of course, was national donut day, so I went in again (closer to 1pm) hoping to find some donut crumbs after the chaos of donut day. Again I was pleasantly surprised to find a bountiful array of donuts (although mostly cakes this time). I picked up some donut holes, a lavender blue corn, a white chocolate pistachio, and a rosemary almond donut to take with me back to Albuquerque. As I said before, I don't adore cake donuts, but these three were significantly better than I expected, and I can easily say I don't feel like I settled for "lesser" donuts like I usually do when I have to select cake varieties. I have two more days and am 100% certain I'll be back at least one more time to find some fun new variety of donut to try. I haven't even eyed the donut chains since I discovered Whoo's. read more

Three words. Blue. Corn. Doughnuts. What a special treat. We had a berry vanilla raised and glazed, a lavender blue corn and maple pecan blue corn, and the kolache, a savory breakfast pastry with sausage, cheese, and of course green chile. We ate every morsel of the doughnuts while enjoying pleasant conversation with the proprietor while he put out more and more fresh donuts. The blue corn doughnuts were slightly crisp on the outside from being freshly fried and light on the inside with a beautiful blue color. This shop seemed more oriented towards locals than tourists which was a welcome change in a town where it can be hard to find the authentic Santa Fe that isn't a marketing campaign for tourists. Somewhat disappointed after all the hype and positive reviews. We arrived this morning early and ordered 2 donuts and 2 almond croissants. The red chili bacon toffee donut was amazing, but the much anticipated blue corn blueberry lavender donut was dry and tasted day old. Same with the croissants...dry, hard and with just a speck of almond in the center and no almond slivers on the top. They tasted like what you would get in a grocery store. When it comes to bakery items, I expect fresh if not still warm...day old just doesn't doesn't cut it. read more

This is one hell of a fancy donut shop. The Chocolate Smith next door runs the place - I found this out after going to the Chocolate Smith one morning, walking out and wondering why all these wild-eyed looking people were going next door. Later on, I found out and kicked myself a bunch of times. The next day, I peeled into the parking lot - a mini Whole Foods style parking lot with A-holes crazed on sugar and high on life, 6 point turning everywhere. Who cares? I got giddy when I saw all the donuts. I don't care much about normal donuts, but woo! These babies are way different. Of course, they have a cake donut with white chocolate lemon glaze and pistachios on top. This one was exceptional, especially when I bit into a uniquely toasted pistachio that was so perfect it can never be replicated. As rich as it sounds, the bacon maple bar with red chile dark chocolate is something I can't put out of my mind, days later. It was quite a bit more subtle than it sounds and the most obvious winner. The maple isn't that fake maple flavor shit and the bacon is crispy and sprinkled on top in little pieces, just right. I had a bite of an unfortunate chocolate cake donut with orange glaze. They might have forgotten the sugar. And the orange. And some chocolate, which was odd - so it tasted very bland. Also, there was some sort of chai cream filled donut that only had about a bite worth of chai creme. But who cares? I would try all of them if I spent more time in Santa Fe. Featuring a wide variety of options ranging from Classic to Filled & Fancy to Decadent and options both yeast raised and cake nearly every option we ordered at Whoos that morning was still warm in the box and although my personal leanings generally tend toward cake it was actually the trio of filled yeasted options at Whoos that wowed the most - the smores with an interior tasting identical to a toasted marshmallow, the Blueberry filled without a hint of high fructose corn syrup but instead the flavor of pure blueberry jam, and the Boston Cream a spot on interpretation of the classic cake/pie with both custard and cream beneath a dense chocolate ganache. With some eaten for breakfast, some en route to Phoenix, and others surviving to the following morning you'd be hard pressed to find a better "all around" donut shop than Whoos - though my own personal biases would love to see their take on an apple fritter should I ever return. read more

I tried Whoo's the other day. Thought the flavors were creative and they had a wide variety to choose from. The fillings, especially that in the Boston cream pie, were delicious. The doughnuts themselves, though, were mostly dry and perhaps a bit stale. The maple-iced bun had no filling--should it? I don't totally understand the hype with this place. There's only one donut worth getting and it's the cinnamon sugar. Fluffy cake like and coated in crunchy sugar crystals. The rest of their donuts- particularly the filled ones are truly lacking. The dough is the downfall here. It is sub par. Very bland and coated in an odd layer of grease. I wasn't a fan. Pastry cream was good though but was difficult to enjoy because of that lackluster dough. I feel like a lot of their ideas are.wonderful, I just wish they'd step things up in terms of how they execute those ideas. read more

I have a tortured relationship with Whoo's Donuts. First and foremost, I've had the BEST donut of my life from Whoo's Donuts, which was offered to me after waiting a little too long in line at the New York Deli (Also good, and also serves Whoo's Donuts). The texture and flavor of my raspberry frosted donut almost brought a tear to my eye. Since then, I've purchased two boxes on two separate occasions for parties I've attended, hoping my gift would be shared. The first box, I had to leave the party early without tasting a single donut. The last beautiful box of Whoo's Donuts I purchased for about $20, was set on a table where a small toy poodle ate every last one while we were in the other room. What type of small dog eats 7 gourmet donuts for crying out loud! Apparently, I'm not the only one who appreciates a good thing. Picked up 2 doughnuts after fighting off a craving for a few weeks. It was first thing in the morning and since they had just opened I was salivating for fresh, hot off the grease basket delicious doggy nuts. First donuts was cold but had a gooey covering. The dough itself was entirely too lemony for a doughnut that was not supposed to be flavored with any sort of citrus. I licked the chocolate off and called it a loss. Doughnut number 2 has been traveling with me across the country as I sit in an airport and craving something sugary and simply wanting to break the "no outside food" rule that the United Lounge imposes. Obviously this doughnut too is cold and a little dry, but the flavor is far superior to victim number 1. I don't know if they need a little 10 second nuking before they get all delicious or if I'm spoiled from the doughnut shop I grew up with that always had doughnuts so soft, hot and dripping with glaze that you had to eat them on a big plate then you got to scrape off the remaining glaze.
