This French Pastry Shop (or similar) has been around since I first visited Santa Fe around 1979. I imagine that there's been a few ownership and La Fonda relationship changes, but inside my limited memory, the place pretty much looks and feels the same. I stopped in last week and ordered a black forest cake slice to go. I was thinking that a little sugar with coffee in the morning was good. I also knew that Gayle wouldn't snack on it as she doesn't like fruit and chocolate mixed together in a dessert. The "to-go" line was a little slow, mostly due to a combination of chatter and specialty coffee drink preparation. But I wasn't much in a hurry. Walking the streets of Old Town Santa Fe, you wouldn't think this is possible. But sit down in front of the large fire place, order the quiche or sandwich of your choice. We loved the flaking of the quiche pastry and savoriness of the fillings. We also had Croque Madam and baguette sandwich with the onion soup. We enjoyed the personal touch of our server who made us feel like regulars coming to visit a long-time friend at work. Stopped here on our way back to town after a company Christmas party and overnight stay. I liked that it was open fairly early in the plaza. We were welcomed quickly and we placed an order. We got three pastries and an espresso. My husband said the esspeso wasn't fantastic but we loved the chocolate croissant, peach pastries, and a savory cheese one as well. I also personally appreciate that the staff was kind to everyone, including those unhoused allowing them in when it was below freezing and that they had coffee. read more

Being from Europe, pastries for me are a must and mainly I appreciate when I find a shop who can craft a good pastry without all the excessive sugar. The napoleon was perfect. Crispy layers of phyllo with a subtle vanilla custard cream.. yummy! Don't worry about manners and just bite into it, a fork will not do it any justice lol The black Forrest cake was also very well made. A little on the sweeter side for my taste but with the addition of the cherries inside it made for a delicious dessert. Starting the morning off right! We came in on a Sunday at around 10:45AM. Located right in Santa Fe plaza, the place was bustling, but we were lucky enough to get the last table. We ordered the savory chicken mushroom spinach crepe and the roast beef sandwich on a baguette, along with a latte and a mocha. The coffee was your typical latte and mocha, and I enjoyed it. The baguette sandwich is also your typical sandwich, although I did enjoy the freshness and softness of the bread. But what I LOVE was the crepe! Folded like a manila envelope, the bechemel sauce paired SO WELL with the chicken mushroom and spinach. Each bite was so satisfying. From the menu items we ordered specifically, this is a satisfactory cafe which will definitely fill you up for the rest of the day. I will say -- the pastries looked absolutely phenomenal, and I would definitely order that next time to satisfy my sweet tooth. We bumped into thjs super cute French café after we were walking around, checking out all the sites and it started pouring. We walked in, got a table and decided to stick around and drink some coffee and try their delicious desserts. We got the moose chocolate cake. It was moist. It wasn't too rich and it hit the spot. This is the cutest little place that makes you feel like you've stepped back in time. The fireplaces, brick, and beams on the ceiling all added to the Beauty and the Beast like atmosphere. They were a little busy when we arrived, but they were able to find a table right away. I chose the savory crepe with chicken, spinach, and mushrooms as well as bechamel sauce. It was really delicious, but it seemed like the mushrooms may have come from a can. They didn't seem all that fresh and the texture was a little off. My husband got a chocolate croissant and the bacon and egg crepe. The chocolate croissant was more dense than we've ever seen (he first discovered chocolate croissants in France and has ordered them whenever he can since then). We changed it up a bit this AM and stopped by the French Pastry Shop for morning coffee. What a good choice... it was good! We had our lattes, and biscotti and a piece of the mushroom quiche. The biscotti was not to sweet, perfect for the coffee. We had the quiche warmed, and it was delicious. Everything was good! Firstly, everyone is allowed to disagree with me. My review is based on my experience. The few things I tasted were very good. Not amazing. Not "omfg whenever I'm in Santa Fe I HAVE to go there and have it again." Just good. Service was adequate. Honestly felt kinda slow, but other than someone trying to cram us into a very crowded corner where we'd literally be touching people we didn't know at the next table and bringing two packs of Dijon mustard when we asked for béchamel sauce, it was fine. For me, the things that just rubbed me the wrong way were that it was so bloody hot in there, so crowded, so cramped, so loud, and so absurdly expensive. Nothing I tasted was good enough to warrant what they were charging for it. With so many other places literally within a minute's walk, I don't see myself purposefully choosing to come to this place again of my own volition. Of course, I'm sure there are those who feel this place is the best place on earth and how dare I have an opinion that doesn't mirror their own. If that's you, then by all means, keep going back; I wish you the best. If, however, loud, cramped, hot, and overly expensive places aren't your jam, hopefully this may give you more information to make an informed decision. read more

My wife had a half ham and cheese on a baguette; she loved it. I had the chicken and mushroom in a béchamel sauce, wrapped in a crepe; it was tasty and filling. My friends ordered a blueberry crepe and another dish I don't recall. The blueberry crepe was probably the laziest dish I've seen. It was simply a crepe with a bunch of fresh blueberries rolled up in it. Better than canned pie filling but seriously, the berries were still cold. It's not hard to make a compote but no effort was made on this dish. We also tried an almond croissant which was meh; barely any filling. Because the sandwich was good, we decided to come back later to get sandwiches for a picnic we planned for a hike in the area. Came back to find out they were sold out of sandwiches. Seriously? After researching, I decided to visit this French pastry café. First time visiting Santa Fe thought I'd start early and have a nice coffee and breakfast. After waiting a little bit, I realize it was busy with one server so I understood. Itself seating so I waited and when the server got around to me, she gave me a menu I ordered a cappuccino and strawberry and blueberry cup. I got a cappuccino and a strawberry and blueberry crêpe. Since they were busy, I didn't make a fuss. I decided to go ahead and eat it about halfway through unnoticed a small piece of hair in the strawberries. Then I noticed another strand here about close to inch long. Both of them were the same length I routed to the attention of the server and she said something about he should put a cap on his head so she left and I thought she was going to adjust my bill. The French Bakery is our favorite breakfast spot in Santa Fe and has been for more years than I can count. It can get busy and the service a bit spotty but totally worth it for the food, comfortable decor and watching passersby on the sidewalk. Our standards for breakfast are croque monseiur for my wife and savory crepe for me. I typically get the egg and Swiss crepe with either ham or green chile. They're already served fresh and hot. Same for the croque monsieur. We also get the cup of fresh strawberries and blueberries. It's a huge amount of fruit that is always fresh and sweet. We're usually too full for pastries but, when we're feeling it, my wife likes the Napoleon and I love the raisin rolls. When we're going to be on the road, we always often get a sandwich to go. A half sandwich is huge and plenty big for 2 people. The restaurant can get busy. The wait staff is not always super friendly or particularly attentive but never rude and always responsive when you wave them down. It's a bit pricey but worth it for the quality and ambience. The French Bakery will continue to be our breakfast spot anytime we're in Santa Fe. read more

The napoleon is dry and the custard part is tiny filings. Would I have loved to have it more "French" style for sure but the service was so French and they give refill on coffees for free. Don't come here. $7.30 for a little pastry. Coffee is warm. And the lady who acts like the owner(Spanish speaking) was rude. They brought me the bill at 4:20pm and telling customers take out only when it is only 4pm. And this lady is mopping the floor while we are sitting at the table. The door is closed already. So we ended up paying $35 for two coffees and two desert. I deserve better service. read more

My friends and I went in 40 minutes before close and as we walked in, the person at the register said to the people he was serving "I thought i locked the door ughjdhh" and then proceeded to tell us that they were closing because all the staff wanted to leave early to watch the game. Then they said they'll only give us anything from the front display case only. Everything in the display case looked a day or two old. We got a cake with cherries in it and as we thought, the cherries were rotten. Will NOT be going back. Poor baked goods and poor, POOR service. Don't complain that people are literally in the shop to BUY food during the time when google AND the sign outside has open operating hours.
